This is the official discussion thread for Voices of the Lifestream, the FINAL FANTASY 7 ReMix project, which has been underway since January 2006. Feel free to leave any comments, suggestions, or questions here.

------
FAQ
------

What can we expect to hear in "Voices of the Lifestream"?

We're shooting for about 38 tracks from the Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack in a WIDE variety of styles. Tons of genres will be represented here, thanks to the varied list of ReMixers involved. Jazz, orchestra, rock, new age, trance, breakbeat, drum n' bass, solo piano... you name it, we're probably going to have it on here.

Who's involved?

AnotherSoundscape, big giant circles, bLiNd, blizihizake, bustatunez (Will Roget), Daniel Baranowsky, Darangen, Darkesword, Dhsu, djpretzel, Carbunk1e, GeoffreyTaucer, Hemophiliac, Jeremy Robson, JigginJonT, Jovette Rivera (DJ Crono), JigginJonT, Leifo, LuiZa, Mustin, pot hocket, pixietricks, Red Tailed Fox, Rellik, sephfire, Shnabubula, Sixto, sgx, SnappleMan, Star Salzman, Steffan Andrews (Spekkosaurus), Suzumebachi, tefnek, tweek, The Orichalcon, Tepid, Trenthian, Vigilante, and zircon.

I emphasize that this list is not necessarily finalized. Over the last 15 months, people have come in and out for various reasons. I, for one, was hoping Wingless and GrayLightning would be able to contribute, but due to work obligations they withdrew. However, I still think the list is pretty solid. ;)

Can I be involved?

Possibly. There are a limited number of tracks remaining to be mixed, and many of them are already claimed. However, if you're interested, either post here or PM me with samples of your work. I might be able to find a place for you somewhere.

What's the current status of the project?

It is nearly completion. 34 tracks are entirely finished and we have about 4-5 more in progress.

When will VotL be released?

Unfortunately, I can't really give anything close to a specific date. It'll be done when it's done. I've been setting and enforcing deadlines throughout the project's life, but I hesitate very much to be too strict here. I would rather give people more time to make a great mix then kick them off and get a mediocre mix from a less talented musician, or have no mix at all.

What formats will VotL be released in?

I would like to do a release of MP3 (uniformly encoded in VBR) and FLAC or WAV. Feel free to leave your thoughts about what you would prefer.

What about album art and a website?

djpretzel has volunteered to do this for us. Given that he designed OCR, I'm pretty confident he'll do a good job. But, if he decides that he needs help, or that he doesn't have time to do it, I will let you all know so we can find someone else.

How about a preview?

No.

This project has so far been drama-less. I'll have to fix that.

We have a fantastic lineup of ReMixers staffing the project, including Starblast, tefnek, djpretzel, Steffan Andrews (Spekkosaurus), mv, GrayLightning, Daniel Baranowsky, Vigiliante, analoq, suzumebachi, Darkesword, JigginJonT, Trenthian, The Wingless, Dhsu, SnappleMan, Rellik, and MANY more

WTF? I'm one of the "many more"? I don't get mentioned? In fact, all of my band is in the "many more" category?

I am offended.

Fuck you and fuck your project.

In case anybody didn't pick up on it, I'm joking. I am thrilled to be on this project, and I think it's gonna kick some serious ass.

Sweet, I just started going through the game a few days ago. So all of the music will be really familiar to me (since I'm just about done with the first disc already)

I didn't hear about this before, so I'm guessing it's new, although it seems to be old.

Thanks, everyone who's involved. I might be able to do a bit of photoshopping for you guys if you'd like. So just do what you guys do best.

I kept waiting for this, since the second- and third-most popular RPG series' (well, the third could be disputed) out there are getting project coverage, but not FF. Not MY personal first choice for an FF project, but definitely not a bad one. Best of luck on this one, zircon and gang! It looks quite promising. ;)

I'd offer my support, but I don't know if analoq would be willing to finish THIS (ftp://66.221.70.133/Mae/analoq_-_maemix1.ogg) little remix. It's of "It's Difficult to Stand on Both Feet, Isn't It?" from ICQ-10 (anyone remember that?)

Otherwise, I do have complete lyrics for it, that could be redone, if anyone would be interested in it...

Just as a point of clarification...

McVaffe - http://www.ocremix.org/remixer/mcvaffe/
mv - http://www.ocremix.org/remixer/mv/

They are not the same person.

Cait Sith's theme, '60s jazz lounge style. You know you want to, and so do I. (Although I don't think jazz is your usual style, if I recall. Cait Sith sounds more like it's right up JigginJonT's alley.)

If you're going to do this, please please do ALL the soundtrack, not just most of it (although little jingles such as the sleep theme aren't necessary). If you ask me there's no point making a project span more than two discs (which I think with the average length of remixes 35 tracks will just exceed) when remixing the whole sound won't take THAT much more effort.

Like you've said, if you're gonna get it done, you've gotta get it done GOOD. Remixer list is a very good start. And despite all my #vgf showboating last night over how this project isn't necessary I wish you luck.

zircon
01-29-2006, 09:53 PM
Actually there's a huge difference between 30-50 and 90 tracks. That's potentially 20 more people. That's a LOT of people considering the level of quality we're going for.

Some tracks in the PSF are arrangements in and of themselves. Others are variations, instrument changes. Of course the short jingles can't really be remixed either..

TCK
01-29-2006, 09:58 PM
And some tracks can be combined into a medley, eg. battle theme and fanfare. Which could possibly also be used to sneak a short remix of the sleep theme.

I guess some of this could be a misunderstanding. I distinctly remember you saying you wanted to cover at least 2/3 of the soundtrack. Like you said, there's a huge difference between, for sake of argument, 40 and 90. 60 is around two thirds.

Some tracks in the PSF are arrangements in and of themselves. Others are variations, instrument changes. Of course the short jingles can't really be remixed either..When I did the math I didn't account for the tracks that obviously shouldn't be counted (two tracks titled "Unknown," "Fanfare Alternate," etc...). Still 30 to 50 songs is quite a bit of work so my "bitch slapping people who complain that you're taking too long" offer still stands.

I'd like to do a track for this.

Possibly collaborating with someone on some vocals or something?

Cait Sith's theme, '60s jazz lounge style. You know you want to, and so do I. (Although I don't think jazz is your usual style, if I recall. Cait Sith sounds more like it's right up JigginJonT's alley.)

Yes, yes, yes, oh my god, very much yes!

Every time I listen to the Majestic Mix Uematsu Tribute album, I think how much more awesome the Cait Sith track could have been with live jazz vocals instead of the purposefully-fake-sounding vocoded vocals. Don't get me wrong, I love vocoders a lot... just not in jazz.

So every time I play the track, I end up singing along; then it sounds better ;).

Despite it not being the only great song on the OST it is still a good track (and yet to appear on OCR). Seems a shame to see so few FFV mixes .

Also, sorry that this message is not in keeping with the desired purpose of the topic, but it should be a fantastic collection of tracks. Especially if you are able to beat the quality of some of the existing FFVII remixes!

Good luck!

I haven't played FFVII since it was first released, can anyone tell me if there is a current or planned remix of the song from the opening sequence, when they go on the first mission. I have had it stuck in my head for years. I believe it was used throughout the entire original demo to the game that came with Tobal No.1. And maybe someone can tell me the name of that song if it is in fact on the original soundtract.

BTW this site rocks.

I know it as 'Opening Theme: Bombing Mission' or Bombing Raid or something like that, but I don't know if that's the official name.

I don't know if there's a remix planned for it or not, but there should be. Good song.

Edit: I don't know if there is a current remix either, though you could look. It would be under Final Fantasy 7 (if you don't know how to navigate the site, there is an alphabet in the top right corner; just click on the 'f'). Actually, I think 'Beyond Midgar' might be that song...but I'm not sure.

Yeah, the song you want is "Bombing Mission." "Philharmonic Suite" is the opening song for the FMV, but it leads right into "Bombing Mission." If you want a remix, and a damn good one at that, grad Jeremy Robson's "Philharmonic Suite: Part 1."

There was ONE "One Winged Angel" mix on Vgmix, and it was a very mediocre hip-hop type version. There's also one cover from DOD back in February (or January, I cant remember). So yeah, there's like three arrangements of One Winged Angel in the whole remixing community.

Well, if you can't post WIPs or anything, at least give us a CLUE as to how the project is faring...and not just "coming along", either. Something solid, like, 24/30 planned tracks have WIPS, so-and-so are completed, etc. Just, like, completion percentages and stuff. I don't even need to know artists or source tunes, just progress, cause this is a bit ridiculous, having an OCR Site Project from which OCR as a community is totally isolated.

Please?

~.C.S.~

zircon
07-08-2006, 08:22 PM
Seeing the massive drama that was caused by C.S. is precisely why I've chosen NOT to reveal much information. As I've said before, when it's completely done - the songs, the website, everything - I will announce a final release date and give a better idea of what you can be expecting.

For now, I'm just going to elaborate a bit on what Spekkosaurus said. The third deadline of the project is coming up and finals are being completed. I have already received some finals and I'm VERY happy with them. There have been a few unfortunate dropouts from the project which were unavoidable (people who left the ReMixing community entirely or are on extremely long vacations and are not doing anything at all with OCR) so there have also been some people who entered a bit later and thus require additional time to complete their tracks.

However, the first 5 months or so of the project were generally more relaxed. Since that time period passed I have been focusing more on the end result and I think everyone will enjoy the results. I'll keep you posted.

Here's an update for you guys.

* We're going to have a teaser site up soon enough.

* There are nine totally completed songs sitting on my hard drive.

* Six songs are nearing completion.

* Ten songs are in the mostly-WIP stages, I estimate at least half of these will be included.

* Nine songs have been claimed and some basic work has been done.. probably 1/3 of these will be included.

Wooohoo! An update!

I must say, I'm very well looking forward to it, looking at the Artists who are participating in it =)
'Though I won't ask for more information, I hope the Teaser site will finally be a reward for those waiting, and for those who put in so much for it. Err, looking forward to it!

Do you plan on selling the album or is it freeware ? how does it work and how often do you fellahs do this ?

Im new, I thought this site was just a cool place to share tribute covers of game music. but obviously, theres more activity then that going on. Sounds realllyy interseting, this sites awesome!

Who's doing the art?

Well... I don't think giving away a bit of information at this point is a big deal, since we're coming down the home stretch. djpretzel as far as I know will be doing the art.

This is one of many official OCR Site Projects, and as such, it will be free to download through BitTorrent and from various mirrors.

If the WIPs I've heard are any indication, this is going to be fucking epic.

Really cool! Finally, a FFVII remix project. Even though FFVII doesn't have the best OST in the series, there are still some nice highlights here and there. I simply can't wait to hear remixes of JENOVA and One-Winged Angel. The people handling these two particular tracks have a lot to live up to since Square-Enix themselves remixed and modified both tracks a few times, and their takes are excellent I might add...especially Advent Children's One-Winged Angel remix.

I'm new in the remixing scene and the only thing I can offer is my singing voice. I don't know if it lives up to OCR standards, but you be the judge (check my debut thread). So if you guys need a vocalist in crunch time and such, I would be more than happy to offer some help.

Good luck! :)

Just out of wonder.. has anyone claimed, WIPed, or finished the Jenova Absolute theme? That track is, quite possibly, my favorite battle song out of them all on the OST. I've been dying to hear a great remix of this theme for quite a while now.

And it's going to many more before the project is finished...you probably shouldn't put your hopes on a 2006 release. And I'm not saying this as someone with inside info, because there really is none as far as release is concerned. But it's just that there's at least two more projects pending release before the end of the year, and we've got less than three months left before 2007.

Don't worry though, it'll be worth the wait. And you can feast on Sonic and Tales mixes in the meantime. :)

zircon
10-05-2006, 08:00 PM
Well, now, I wouldn't say that exactly. Here's the current status, for those of you interested.

* There are fourteen finalized tracks.
* Eight tracks are fairly close to completion. They might need a slightly tightened ending, or some mastering polish, but generally speaking, they're very close to done.
* Four or so tracks have some work done, and a strong concept, but aren't too close to being done.
* There are a handful more that are in even earlier stages.
* Four or five tracks are claimed, with no work done them.

So, it's definitely coming along. I'll be happier when those "almost done" tracks make it to my "FF7 Project Finals" folder in WAV format, but nonetheless, I'd say progress is good. I've been going after people on a weekly to daily basis to make sure we don't stagnate.

I know that people would even seem skeptical over this, and I definitely said this a few months back, but if you want a hand or two, I'll be happy to contribute. Often times I'm very open minded over various source tunes whether they're left aside or not, and on top of that I feel that whatever task I've been given, I can be able to manage it. Plus, two spots at OCR already wouldn't hurt :)

Either way, most of your personnel sounds good to hear. I am pretty sure that something really promising would come out of all this, and I'm sure you've got the bones to pull it off. Keep it going ;)

Yeah, unfortunately, several people dropped out due to RL stuff - too busy for ReMixing or just no interest anymore. analoq, GrayLightning, Scott Peeples, and Wingless to name a few. It's unfortunate, but at the same time we also got some great newer ReMixers like Sixto, Tepid, GeoffreyTaucer, and LuiZa. Pretty much all the vets have an open invite at this point. If Gray ever rematerializes I'll find a spot for him no matter what. ;)
