Your resizes don't look that good, bro. But perhaps try some other colors. Maybe Coop and Evilhead can also give it a try and y'all can get more of the characters from those links I gave earlier.

LT: The head/face of Rudo needs the same size/proportion of his picture as the others. Right now, his head looks a lot smaller. Once you have that, djp will likely pick either yours or nineko's closer POV style.

LT: Only took the first enemy with a transparent background (the other one didn't look good either way). When using solid backgrounds with no bordering, it's best not to have some images touching the border of the image.
N: I know, that's why I added a border when I did the Dig Dug ones some time ago. This time I couldn't do that because the whale is 32x30 and there's no room for a border. I could use the original sprite (16x15, I resized it to make it look bigger), but it would be too small.

Yeah, King of Pillows's avatar is Yuji Horji (Misc1). Misc3 and Misc9 are Kazuhiko Aoki and Hironobu Sakaguchi. For reference, Misc4 is Akira Toriyama, but there's no sign of Uematsu's respective sprite (which looks a lot like Norstein Bekkler to me).

I would like to request the sky dragon from that game (it's a regular monster, not a boss), but I think I would be the only one who might use it.

Here are some images I have used as avatars before. I decided to give the Space Invaders names, which are (left to right) Ecks, Jobs, and Skim.

LT: I love that dead Mac, but we won't use it. At least fill in the Space Invaders with some different colors for each one, otherwise the images are just too plain.

Personally I still like "Ecks" (the left-most Space Invader) in original white, but I've done a coloured version as well. The middle is filled with "Space Invaders Green," which is the same color as the green from the original arcade game, and the yellow and aqua colours are derivatives of that green.

LT: Hey, awesome! No offense, but instead of going with your names, I named them squid, crab, and octopus based on an interview with the game's designer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders#Graphics_design), Toshihiro Nishikado. Nice choices with the colors. Basing the color variants off the original Space Invaders green to be faithful to the game whole giving them the color they needed is a small detail that someone like me would appreciate.

LT: These sprite rips should be better, i.e. take directly from the game. Right now these aren't sharp enough.

I'm not going to take anything dominated by white backgrounds; you have to get rid of those and make the backgrounds transparent.

Dark Samus turned out well, but I think Jin looked better with the border. Meh, it's still OK.

EDIT: Added OCR3 Tan to the mix.

LT: Dark Samus looks fine with transparency, the others don't. Just fill in the white color for the Jin one with some other color that works. The resolution on 3-tan isn't sharp enough. The only part of her face one can make out are her eyes. Plus, I don't want a pic like that to have a transparent background. Transparent background work the best on sprites, not traditional pictures.

LT: Keep BSing with it. Doesn't need to be off-white, but that doesn't look too bad. Just lighten the shade of the background without making it too close to white. Good stuff so far.

Please note that most of them have white or bright parts on their edges, and this makes them not good on a background like ocr's.
I can add a canvas to the ones you wish to use, so just let me know which one are already OK, and which ones need a canvas, so I can aim and edit only the necessary ones (time waste -1). :wink:

edit (obvious): this only applies to the ones that are < than 31 x 31 or the canvas won't fit.

LT: Anything with mostly white or gray in there, feel free to do a canvas and see how it looks. Choose the background colors wisely!

in fact, you can do that, but the problem is, that the browser download the whole pic and resize it after. that mean if everyone (like some stupid forum i know) use a wallpaper size pic, that slow a lot the navigation.

There will be no custom avatars. We prefer to simply use a standard size and won't deviate from that, so that the forums don't have avatars that wildly deviate in size from person to person.

How exactly is that a problem? You can always set a dimension and filesize limit.again: it doesn't work when linking to off-site avatars.

Actually, it can work. I've seen sites in the past that refuse to allow an image to be hotlinked because it exceeded the specific file size that was allowed (it may have used a kind of "check" code to make sure it met the requirements). I've also seen images get drastically squished because it was bigger than the coded dimensions for the avatar space (I've done this by accident a few time with my site, by replacing an image, but not updating the html code to the new size).

It can likely be done, but it's a moot point when talking about OCR and avatars.

I'm working on some Teen Titans avatars. They're still a WIP, but I'd like your thoughts on where to go with them LT. More sharpening? Make each background differently colored (I was thinking like the colors used behind each character from the shows opening... Robin = Red, Starfire = Orange, etc.)? Turn up the contrast a bit?

First they're not sharp enough, then they're too pixelly. So damned picky :P

The problem with other head shots, is that there's not a lot of good production art. There's plenty of it, but the drawings are usually less than accurate to how they looked on the show. These head shots (gotten off of Cartoon Network's site (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/titans/gen1/tower.html) for the show) are the best I've come across, as they're not making a stupid expression, and they're pretty accurate. Plus, with so many other sites using screengrab edits, I thought I'd use something that didn't seem to be common.

Anyway, I know... blah blah blah. I tried to soften up the edges a bit, and made them a bit brighter. So, here's another attempt while I look for some head shots from various episodes...

Sorry for the late response, I'm really busy with TV stuff and everything. But I think these are OK now, I tried to balance brightness, contrast, and gamma correction in the best way I can.
Anyway, Larry, there are 3 or 4 sets of these avatars available right now so you may also pick some from each set if you think they look good in one of the previous ways (because, the source pics are not all bright in the same way, so also the edits can be better in different ways. lol engrish, but I'm sure you got what I mean). And Coop, feel free to rework them as many times as you want, it's not like they are copyrighted :p

LT: Good try. I prefer your Boswer here, so I took that. Otherwise snagged the Coop, which were a little too bright, but weren't too dark and were fine overall.

LT: Nah on the Bubble Bobbles. All the sprites are touching the borders while it has a background, which looks awful. I'd say forget 'em. The Space Invader ones...just too plain. Very simple sprite with the simplest background there is; just boring. I'd rethink 'em if they had cooler backgrounds, though I dunno how one would pull that off.

LT: First two aren't that good, and I already accepted a sub of that 3rd one, only brighter and faced in the other direction. But keep subbing more ideas as long as they're good.

edit: Ah, I see that now back on the 7th page. I don't mind putting extra effort into fixing up a sprite to make it submission worthy, but I'm a bit confused, what was it that's wrong with the sprites? Comparing what I did with the accepted one the other guy made, I notice his is brighter and thus, clearer. Is that all though? You have a better eye so I don't mind asking before I start.

It's a bit difficult because the only sprites of Nack are poor quality gamegear ones in the first place. But I'm not asking for sympathy, just suggestions.

LT: Sega Genesis (possibly Game Gear too) sprites tend to be darker than normal, so they usually need to be brightened a little bit to match up with our typical forum avatars. In the case of Nack above, the sprites are just ugly, so there's nothing you can so about that.

And to answer your question, Gollgagh, Melty Blood is a fighting game based on the Tsukihime universe. It's very Guilty Gear-like in its fast pace, big combos, spectacular super moves, and unique characters. The sprites aren't as high-res as GG's, but the animation is some of the most fluid you've probably ever seen in a fighter game.

Actually, if you learn the cannon, you'd know that Poison and Roxy were originally girls. The main reason they were changed to "shemales"/"transvestites"/"Newhalf" characters, was because of the whole "violence against women" thing. Seems Capcom feared issues with this subject from other countries, so they altered it (yeah... don't hit women, but here's a couple shemales. Interesting choice there Capcom). This of course, led to problems when the game was brought to the SNES and other systems. Shemales weren't exactly what Nintendo wanted (imagine their surprise after they translated the backstory for them), so they were replaced with the male punks in the SNES games (and the GBA one too I believe).

So while Capcom may be sticking to their bullshit story (though Roxy is supposedly a girl now), the characters were actually pure female to begin with. They just tried to cover one potential problem, and created another. Now Capcom's stuck with an idiotic cover up tale for what's always drawn as a curvy, voluptuous woman in their official art, and they're too chicken shit to just admit their mistake and go back to what was originally intended... that being, Cody/Hagger/Guy punching out chicks ;)

Yea, those were ripped straight out of the game using Rice's Video plugin in 1964, hence the blurriness.
No alteration was made on my part other than converting from png to gif.

I made a black background several pages back, and LT didn't like it. He said they were "too plain", and suggested trying to do something that gave them a "cooler background". So, that's what I'm trying to do.

Of course, since the game's from 1978, I'm not sure what the issue is with the sprites looking as they do. But the game's a classic, and it deserves to be included, so I'm trying my best.

LT: That specific image, probably not. Can't really see the Joker's face well enough, even if the resolution was sharper. Which it's not for this one.

In any case, you're asking if I'd take a Joker avatar. As long as it was well done, and the image looked nice, I don't see why not.

LT: Took Billy (I see lots of people taking that one) and Poison (disturbing sprite, but it turns Prot on; [shrugs]). The GL ship needs a full 32x32 icon with the black background. Cropping it to 25 pixels wide like that looks out of place. The Roll just looks bleh to me, and the waist-up cropping makes it look even more tacky. Interesting choices though, keep it up!
