Xenogears '7 Years Broken'

Wheeeeee! Mr. Lloyd sings! Again… although this was the first time I’d heard him sing. Personally, I enjoy this mix. There’s quite a different take than the original in this mix. The background is much different, and the way he has of singing is better, in my opinion, than the original. I really enjoyed this track the first time I heard it, and the second, third, fourth, and all the times afterwards. I thought that whatever effect he used on his voice during the chorus was used well. The echo, which can be heard well in the quieter part at ~2:40, was also timed perfectly I felt. This is one of my favourite tunes on OC. 5/5

Yea I think this remix was great too. The beginning intro is great, and I like the vocals and the piano( :D ) in it too. Overall a great remix of a great song!

I should probably start off by saying that this was the mix that compelled me to bite the bullet and register on the forums, something I normally shy away from. It would be a grave injustice if I just didn't say something about this mix.

While it's true that I have a thing for the original of the Xenogears track and all corresponding remixes, I have to say that this is the one that stands out in my mind the most. Broken Mirror Reflection has the nice techno thing going on in the middle of the song, but I honestly prefer the vocals on 7YearsBroken. They're at just the right pitch, timbre, and any other musical term you want to put in there. And they're male - something which is definitely different from all the other remixes of this the original song that I've downloaded.

I also liked the synth and techno theme of the mix. I grew up in the 80's, and I love electronica, so this is a marriage of my two musical loves. Add a dash of piano (which I am admittedly a sucker for) and you've got the perfect mix for an already cool track. To quote one of the SNL Coffee Talk sketches, "it's like heroin."

Okay, I thought I posted this before but apparently it got vaped. Since I'm lazy I'll be quick in posting this again. I think. In other words, you don't get the benefit of my whole spiffy review.

In short, the only thing bad about this remix is that it doesn't have 'replay value', something which I think is important for music as well as the video games everybody's remixing from here :). I like it, especially the intro, and the singing isn't that bad :) but in order to get a 9-10 it needs to make me want to listen to it again and again.

Team Gato is the exception because it's a humor thing, of course, (though I did listen to it several times :))

8 out of 10

Most vocal remixes I've heard so far are absolutely terrible. Even if I discount such wondrous names as Fanatics Tower of Power at vgmix, you are left with lots of crappy remixes. I figure it's because they're hard to get right.
This is quite a good remix. Definitely the best vocal remix I've heard as of yet. Without the vocals, it's 8/10, the fact that the vocals are good and don't screw the entire thing up leaves it with a 9/10.

Good one!

I registered for this review.

What can I say? This is my second favorite remix, ever. Ever. I give it a 9.9/10. It's that damn good. God willing and the creek don't rise, you will download this song.

As many others before me, I registered in order to post my thoughts about this remix. Personally, I give it a 8/10 because it's catchy and I want to hear it again and again (maybe as much as I listen to pretzel's F-Zero remix), but I don't give it 10 because it doesn't fall into A) A game I love for the music or B) A genre of music I love. All in all, I still love it. Also, djpretzel being my favorite remixer here, I was very shocked and almost in denial that his voice sounded so darned cool! Whatever girl told him not to sing should listen to that singing and try to say it again. Frankly, I want to hear mr.pretzel sing more often. :!:

DJPretzel, if you ever get to read this, I want you to NEVER, EVER, be afraid to sing again. This remix flows in a very light, airy sort of way. Close your eyes, and the music makes you feel like you're flying. Really fast. But the vocals add a whole other dimension to this mix. In a song of this speed and almost surrealistic style, I feel it crucial that there be something solid to grasp and hang on to. Pretzel's vocals do just that. This mix is a must have. Honestly, I've only heard of Xenogears in passing, and never played it, but this is a must download. This is a
+10\+10 Song of Pretty!

By Blindeye's standard, I'd have to give this amazing piece a 10 out of 10, so I'll do so. Great game, great music, amazing remix. I might be new here, but what better section to start in than Xenogears? After hearing the remixes here (especially this one), I was driven to go back and reply the game, missing the esscence which you so majestically captured. You sing amazingly and I'd love to hear you do more. Good job, and may you continue to prosper!

Such happiness....makes me want to spin around and stuff. I like the whole thing, but I'd like to point out the best out of it.

Best vocal part: Chorus, definitely the chorus. Everything about the voice is on perfect rhythm with the rest of the song. It would definitely sound bland without all those effects done to it (no offense to djp's stand alone singing, because it would be true for everyone methinks...except for rock bands). So basically everyone could have a good voice, but it would sound better with effects =)

Best instrument: Piano, definitely the piano. I could whistle all the piano for the rest of my life and it would rarely get old.

I would have never seen the original melody in its glory if it wasn't for this ReMix. I don't know why, I just didn't really hold much regard for this in the past, but now it's one of my fav djp songs.

Phenomenal piece.
Definately one of the best ones I've heard thus far.

I love this ReMix. Many songs get stuck in my head throughout the course of a week, but only an elite few can give me the urge to actually hear the song as soon as I can. It's all great. DJP, any plans to sing another ReMix again? I think we'd all agree that it works. Beautiful job!

Goddamn I just can't stay away from this freakin' reviews for this game!!!!

okay with that out of my system ...
That's Pretzel? No joke ... THAT'S Pretzel?
You've got a NICE voice, I like it. I like the sounds in this remix and the lead piano with it's supporting (has a beautiful duet sound to it). I'm getting closer to demanding where the lyrics come from, but I degress there. It's a sweet song, this remix is second place for this song though ... but considering everything, first and second get the same prize, so no shame in that. I hope to hear something like this again from Pretzel.

Yes, it's another person who registered just to comment on this . . .

Now . . . while I absolutely love the remix (gotta love the 80's stuff), there's one thing in my mind that's keeping it from being better in my book.

The. Vocals. They're just . . . . slightly . . . flat. I mean . . . they're off pitch and don't fit in the song . . . it HURTS. But the music is great. And it could be worse. It could be singing pretzel.

But . . . ouch. It's flat. I'm sorry.

I've downloaded over 50 remixes over a long period of time, but this is the first I actually wanted to really say something about. I had just recently gotten Xenogears, and was curious to hear some of the remixes, and I'm glad I clicked. This one is amazing, and I agree with the previous posts in that it is a MUST download. You really can sing, pretzel, which is more than I can say for myself.
*blinks*
Well, I can sing fine without instumental accompaniment, but if someone's playin an instrument, I sound horrible...

7/10. The remix itself is pretty good, but the timing of everything seems off. Also you're not a bad singer, (at least no where near as those on American Idol) but you should probably stick to what your ex girlfriend said. Or you could just say "to f*ck wit her, I got da sh!t, myan!"

YESS!!!! Sweet monkey jesus, I love this song! It has a nice 80's feel to it. The piano, the drums, the synths... everything is spot on. The vocals are very good for this genre, and, in my opinion, this song deserves a 10/10. Bravo!

WOW!!! DJ Pretzel has a really good voice for this song. It matches much better than the original singer IMHO. I'm new to this site and have been dling all day and I have to say that this is my Fave of them all so far (and I doubt that it will lose its place anytime soon (anytime soon = never lest I get driven insane...wait *thinks a minute*...i forgot...I already am insane...regardless I LOVE this remix))...can't wait to hear more of your remixes djpretzel...*starts singing along with the track with his awful off-key voice*...run to the end of the world... :D

04-28-2003, 11:24 PM
I really like this track, its alot less distorted, more legible than "Broken Mirror Reflection" the only deciding factor for would be a more passionate theme with BMR or a more up beat theme for this one.

In either case VERY good track, i had listened to the beginningin of the track but always got side tracked and never heard the whoel thing, heck, i didnt know there were any vocals in this track until last week.

very well done, A++++++ on my record

You don't have a bad sounding voice. A little flat at some points, but can be fixed with time. Do more like this one!!

10-08-2003, 10:11 PM
Although it starts up reminding me of another song, this song is wonderful. (I had it running through my head all day!) Your voice is perfect for this peice. The beat is fast, but the calm and soothing voice slows it down and makes me feeling like I'm floating. 10/10!!

I truly love this song, and this interpretation. Contrary to what some others have said, I cannot detect any major flaws in Mr. Pretzel's singing, and I love the way the synth and piano blend. The lyrics themselves are a little less upbeat than the music, but the difference there makes the song all the more interesting. Congratulations and thanks.

DJP, I don't care what your ex said, your singing is SUPERB. This is one of favorite OC Mixes, and the way everything blends is perfect. It all fits together, and sounds beautiful and emotional. It makes me want to go play Xenogears.

I loved this song from the first second I heard it. The intro makes me feel quite nostalgic (though I'm not quite sure why, as I was born in '86). Vocals are cool, I usually prefer non-lyrical stuff but it works great with this song.

One of my favorite remixes ever.

HumpteeFree
02-13-2004, 08:47 PM
At first it cheesily got into my head and annoyed me, but after a then I started liking it. It has the catchiness of pop songs without the crappy cons, now that's playlist material.

Krelian
02-29-2004, 02:13 AM
Very 80's esque...it really is the vocals that put the stamp on that though. You sound like you're british...a member of cutting crew or some other 80's pop band.

Your arrangement is mitsuda-esque. You have like 4 or 5 different sounds all playing their own song but combining to make something remarkable.

I love it. Thank you very much for making this.

Ingonyama
03-21-2004, 03:14 PM
Mr. Pretzel, whatever anyone tells you, don't EVER let them tell you you can't sing! O.o I wish I were this good...You sounded like George Michael in the Lunar song you did, and I dug that, but in this, you've got a slightly American (the band) sound, a la "The Last Unicorn."

The techno backbeat really fits the tempo and doesn't wreck the mood...which, in MHO, is all it takes to make a song. ^_^

I'm just getting into Xenogears remixes, and this is one of my faves so far.

Just like the otherguy said. YOU CAN SING.

I'm going to come off as a jerk here, so I appologize before hand. First off, the arangment is wonderful. It is very proffesionally done. This of course leaves the main focus of the song, the vocals. It's fairly obvious that you touched up the voice for the refrain and the constant echo effect is nice too. Of course these are all effects and not aspects of the voice itself.

It would appear you have a bit of trouble holding a specific pitch without a bit of vibrato comming through. I think the minor echo does very well to cover this up though. Also you appear to have less than perfect diction, but this could be a side effect of your very supressive dynamics, which would allow the accustics to overpower your voice to at times make the end of your words seem unneseserrily lagato.

This lagato is of course is not helped by the echo effect and I'm by no means saying you have a terrible voice. I'm just saying that your musical tallents have allowed you to overcomming any shortcommings your voice has by masking them and allowing a rendition of the song that allows for a much more vocal / instrumental ballance rather than having one aspect simply supply support.

Overall it is a very well done remix, and with your voice fits perfectly with this song when done the way you executed it. I'm just trying to provide an objective opinion, as I feel that's what anyone would want in a review; honesty.

Have to say, I really like the introduction to this mix. It's sort of trance-like and I must say I enjoy it. I like the faster pace of this mix over the original. The echoing of the lyrics is very subtle at times, but it really helped make this mix for me.

Damn you Mr. Pretzel for making something that great.

Pretzel, man you have a sexy voice. (If I didn't have a boyfriend...shh.) This song is so awesome. I also liked your Lunar remix, but this one is even better. I was listening to 'Singing Pretzel' in the car one day and my friend said she didn't like it. (I don't associate with her anymore, but not for that reason.) Don't be afraid to sing more. Here's hoping your next mix is another balls-out lyric-belting masterpiece.

BobTheDog

Pretty cool track. The vocals don't sound right during the intro, starting at the first chorus they rock. In the intro they sound out of place... either too soft or off key or off tempo or something... Maybe the emotion put into them is a little different than that of the music... I can't put my finger on it... it just sounds odd at the beginning...

But yah great 80's synth sound ^_^

8/10

First off, I loved the original song to begin with-so I'm pretty much gonna like an Remix of this song, probably.

Second of all, Mr. Pretzel, you should do vocal's more often-they're alittle chessey but I like them. It's like Japanese singing in English, sounds weird but still good enough to like.

Over all- I like this mix, I like the vocal's even more-they make me laugh... in the good way, lol.

I really like this remix, small of two pieces is my favorite Xenogears song and you did a really good upbeat mix of it. Keep up the good work and how about trying your hand at a few Xenosaga songs because OCremix has none and that makes me sad  Anyways great work and keep it up

I was surprised when I saw that this was a pre-400 mix of pretzel's - He usually stuck with his strange, distorted techno style early on, and this is quite a different take.

From what I'm hearing, DJP has a great singing voice that goes very well with the piano. I really like how his voice sounds when slightly echoed, and he did a fine job combining the reverbed synth with the piano and... whatever that slivery xylophony thing is.

Recommend.

...yet another remix I wish I had the full lyrics for. Though, what I've been able to pick out, I haven't completely understood, but that might be because I haven't played the game.

I must say that djpretzel's voice is definately what makes this remix worth listening to. I'm not so much a fan of the style, but it's good to listen to every now and then. Definately a very good job on every side.

Almost makes me want to check out the game, really.

I like this mix a lot. It reminds me more than a little of the synthpop band Neuropa, and synthpop in general. But djp's vocals definitely have a Neuropaesque tinge to them. Needless to say I'm pleased with the result, regardless of his own confidence in his vocal chords.

Way to astound us with yet another awesome remix, DJP. I guess I must not have a very trained ear for this sort of stuff, because I can't seem to find any glaring flaws with your voice. The echo effects no doubt serve to tone down whatever flaws might be there. All in all, I say you should cultivate this talent you have for singing, regardless of what some woman said about your voice. It seems to me, with practice, you'd make an excellent singer.

Funny thing, before I listened to this song - and even a while after listening to it - I had assumed you were a girl, because of your avatar. Crazy ignorant newbie me. Anyway, great song.

quite an amazing display of musical talent and ability.

This (http://chaos2.org/ff/) is a nifty little site I've stumbled across whilst searching for the lyrics to Chrono Cross's Unstolen Jewel. It has lyrics to a number of Square songs, including this one, as well as a bunch of other neat notes and such.

...wow. Impressive. Hey, I've never tried to rec myself singing, but I wish I could start singing like this. The pitch in some parts reminds me,as strange as it can sound, of oriental music. Nice echo too. The music sounds a little like some 80's classics but the effects and synths are different.

Well, whatever. I just want more.

This one is absolutely epic. Very nicely done, very beautiful. This is how the song was meant to sound.

EXCEPT: the chorus in this mix sounds like it's a measure short, and it's really really annoying.

Dear Mr. Pretzel:

You f*cking rock.

OC Remix is a great site with all sorts of great music from all sorts of great remixers. Among all them, I have a top three: (in no particular order) McVaffe, Star Salzman, and djpretzel.

You're usually pretty modest in your writeups, which is good. But, for the credit you might not have given yourself, you have all of us drooling a**kissing fans to make up for it.

This remix is cool. Bouncy sounding, awesome 80'sesque synthesizer riffs, and of course, your vocals. The vocals are great. Any of your remixes where you sing are subsequently great. And even non-OCremixes where you sing are great, like the "Naruto: Falling Down" one that I fond on animeremix.org. In that song, you did these neat thingies where you were singing in harmony with yourself at the refrains. Like..you sang all the parts (melody, harmony, beat-boxing, etc.) and then used your magical music remixing machine to play it back at the same time. Cool stuff, even if Naruto and I aren't on speaking terms (f*cking fillers...if they ever end and the story gets back on track, it'll be worth watching again).

But this remix, yes, very very good. 10/10.

My first post here, have been a fan of OC Remix for quite a while.
I love this remix, it is in my opinion better than the original! I was wondering if anybody knows of similar electronica remixes that I could get my hands on :)

Well its different from the original but I wouldn't go so far as to say its better, I do enjoy the Japanese and US versions a lot as this is one of my favorite songs period. DJPretzel does a great job making this normally more somber song a catchy pop tune.

Im not going to lie or suck up and say that hes great at singing, hes ok or good at best, however he has a great ability to turn that into a strength by again transforming this song into something else, an uptempo catchy song that you can listen to as a guilty pleasure. I do get a lot of enjoyment out of this song.

If you are going to remix a song I think its better to make it your own rather than just karaoke a close rearrangement of it and thats what Pretzel has done here, he made it his own with great success.

Sorry to make your girlfriend a liar, but you can sing. Quite well, at that. I'm very new here, but I know good music (somewhat.:whatevaa:) Great job.

One of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it...the piano is absolutely gorgeous and the vocals are perfect.

Great spin on an immortal piece of videogame music. A lighter treatment to something that was a bit deeper, but still very enjoyable.
The song sounds downright irrestistable to sing. There's a very cool twisting vocal melody that sounds very fun to master, and that sense of fun comes through in the vocal. Quality-wise, the instrumental portions of the mix were much stronger than the vocal, but that's not to say the mix would benefit with their removal. The singing, even with the various flaws, is fundamental. Besides, with today's society focusing so much on the quest for perfection, it's refreshing to recieve a reminder that perfection is a myth, average-to-good voices can work just as well as trained voices, and that there is no shame in digtal alteration if quality is the primary incentive.
I believe this mix encapsulates all of this; and how could it not, it's djpretzel. Any mistakes he makes, he makes on purpose. He's just that good.

The singer is awesome in this which is good. The piano was great in this and is a catchy song.

if the production was a little more bombastic, i'd have sworn this was a eurobeat song. Somehow DJP has a european accent here? Strange, but it works.

I wish the percussion hit harder, and a little EQ changes, but damn, this was 2001, which is like, 5 years before I even considered remixing music, so maybe I should just shut it. ;-)

Pretty decent singing as well, and I liked the extended piano passage at the end.

Nice eighties style pad sweeps opening up the mix. It's also not very often we get a ReMix with the standard verse-chorus-verse... structure.
0:28 piano sounds great and I'm digging that snare hit
0:54 vocals work well and sound pretty good
3:40 once again, nice piano work for the outro

I've always loved this mix from when I've heard it back in 2002, and still do. It has a certain charm to it with the vocals and an upbeat yet sad setting. Definitely a favorite of the old mixes on the site!
