Ya know what would really surprise me? If they'd say at the end of the whole show: "oh and btw, you can pick up Smash Bros. Brawl in stores tomorrow..."

0_0; It'll never happen, but I want someone to pull a stunt like that at least once in my lifetime.yeah except for the part where i wouldn't have money saved up :o

I know he's a fan favorite many want in, but I still have trouble seeing Ridley as a playable character in this. As an assist trophy sure, anything's possible there but as a playable it just seems kind of hard to imagine. Not saying I hate him or anything like that, I don't. And if he were in there I wouldn't complain either but I just have trouble seeing him work as a playable.

I wonder if he'd still be mega-vulnerable to missiles . . .

I just want a release date. I don't want any info on unlockable characters or stuff like that. I want it to be a surprise to me, lol.
Ditto. I am on smashboards.com often now, but I will stop going on until I've unlocked all the characters and stages after the games release. Here too, I guess. Discussing the new unlockables will be the thing to do after Brawl's release.

I take it that you can just hold down A and Metaknight will have his sword constantly slashing, WHICH WOULD BE REALLY REALLY GAY if you could do it all the time while moving or jumping, but that probably won't happen

I wouldn't take his word directly on constant attacking. I have a feeling it'll be analogous to burst fire in a FPS. Get me? He'll be mobile or w/e, but you saw it in the trailers. A quick burst of sword flurry. That's probably what is meant here.

When Smash Bros. Brawl was first announced, back when they said it was going to be a launch title, they said it was going to have online. That was official straight out of Nintendo's mouth. Additionally, it was also officially stated that the online mode would be different from what we're used to because of how quick of a game Smash Bros is. All of that is official and were all quoted from developers, IE Nintendo. I don't have the articles handy, but I checked it all at the time of the news release, and it was accepted by everyone as true. You can go back and do some digging through google and get the facts, or even this thread. It's all officially true.

Not like that WW link, ice climbers are gone, crappy nonsensical rumors.

So yeah, online mode won't be the traditional smash bros we all know and love. Whatever that means is up to the devs.

I'm willing to bet it will be some sort of minigame experience, or leader boards that report your offline progress to everyone. Something cool would be being able to create something (level, skin, what have you) and share it with other people, or just download bonus content straight from Nintendo. *Shrugs* Seriously, it'll probably be like a race to the finish where you can't attack. No lie! lol.

But who knows really... Nintendo is weak when it comes to online experiences (except for the Virtual Console)... so, I'm not really holding my breath for any of the online gameplay in Smash Bros. Yes I would love to see a fully robust online mode of play, but Nintendo has never really grasped the whole online gaming thing.

I mean, yeah, I've played Mario Kart DS online, but ... hell, come on, there were more features to play with people you know back in 1994 when we were playing Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 and other ancient games... hell I'd wager cash that any terrible PC game with a multiplayer aspect is probably better than anything Nintendo has come up with yet. And it saddens me to say that because I like Nintendo.

I know from experience that fighting games, well, specifically Dead or Alive, was ridiculously difficult to play because of the lag, so... yeah.

Well, in Nintendo's defense, even though I didn't care too much for the game itself because of wicked crab handage, Metroid Prime Hunters had a pretty robust online interface going on. But yeah, the other WiFi enabled Nintendo games I've played haven't really had the best online.

But lag or no, they'd definitely lose some sales if they were to exclude online play. Everyone I know aside from myself and a handful of real life friends are buying the game for the sole purpose of online play. And even if there is lag, I don't play the game for tournament stuff anyways; for me Smash Bros. is first and foremost an ode to Nintendo and a wetdream for Nintendo fans, then a party game, and then a serious tournament game. I know most of the people on these boards are hardcore gamers and whatnot, but Smash Bros. is a game that appeals to all kinds of gamers, including the ones that don't mind a pinch of lag in their online soup. So yeah, definitely beneficial to have some kind of online stuff in this, especially if Nintendo plans on not being bombed by some crazy fan if they decided to not include it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. As much as I love fighting for the competitive play, the game remains to me at its core as an incredibly fun giant Nintendo-themed pillow fight, letting players duke it out as their fav chars... of course as much as I'd love [exceptional] online play, I won't crucify myself or Nintendo if it doesn't. Hell I'm just thrilled they decided to do another iteration of Smash Bros altogether.

Wow, didn't expect a game like that to show up. That wasn't a 1st or 2nd party game right? That was... Maxis right?

And if that's true, does that mean we'll see other 3rd party characters as assist trophies. I thought all of those were going to be exclusively Nintendo franchise characters. Guess I was wrong. That's exciting. So that is why this update rocks, possible other 3rd party assist trophies... and well, bringing back something from my childhood. I guess perhaps its games published by Nintendo.

SimCity is originally a Maxis IP. However, the SNES version was developed by Nintendo with a license of the game concept, making all new characters appearing in it Nintendo characters. Hell, the SNES SC has Bowser as a possible disaster and a Mario statue.

Not to mention that Dr. Wright shows up in Link's Awakening in a nice cameo too.

Anyway, this shows that SSBB might have quite a few lesser-known characters in it. Maybe Tamagon will show up too(He was also in SSBM as a trophy)

I scrolled down even further, and I saw the SimCity Dr. Wright.

Then, I was like "Oh, that guy. I guess that's still kinda cool."

Anyway, I hope they don't give away too many secrets - I still want this game to be a surprise when it comes out. Heck, I knew way too much about the new Zelda TP when it came out, and it ruined it for me.

I think that this has been one of my top 5 updates. Not because this information is more essential than the others, but because this update encourages me to dream more that I previously thought I could.

No one here thought of including Nintendo IP as vague as SNES SimCity, I'd venture. Therefore, the update tells us that anything we can think about in the world of Nintendo IP is equally vaild.

Basically, any update that gives me hope of seeing Michael Jones (the yo-yo wielding baseball pitcher, not the crappy music star) in the game is a good one. :p

How about the game reading your existing SSBM save to unlock a few nice extras? Or savegames already on your Wii?

SSBM did that, if you had a savegame of mario sunshine, I think.

1)Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so let them voice it. You complaining about their "issues" about the updates makes you worse than them. Shut the fuck up.

2) You aren't cthonic, so stop signing your damn posts.

also lloyd irving as smash character plzkthx :o

Ok, so, I hate to respond to this here, but oh well.

1) I totally understand that everyone is entitled to an opinion. That's cool. What I was referring to in my post was that someone had flamed that dude for ctrl-c/ctrl-v'ing his exact post from the Gamefaqs boards, which I think is kind of a dumb thing to do. At least re-form your sentences, if not your thoughts. So, when I read the same post I had read on GF's, I lol'ed. Unfortunately, the person's post I was referring to has since been removed.

2) Why does anyone care about me signing my posts? It's an endearing character trait; I do it everywhere, not just on these boards. Like you said, it's a free world, so deal with it.

As for Dr. Wright... I wonder if he'll always pop up the same set of skyscrapers, or if it will be different each time. I think it'd be cool to see an office building one time and a business district another. Maybe they could do differing amounts of knockback and damage; the taller the building the more damage it does, but the shorter the building, the more ground it covers.

Wow. I LOVE the new update, not because i care about it (nice, give's us a sense of how obscure they are willing to go. that's it) but because since then i've witnessed:
Some 13 year olds really getting upset because they are not getting the full scoop on a game with a release date six months away, and a real life unmod style discussion about someone signing his post and how stupid it is.
So, massive lolz. It's great to see my need for SSBB opinions, internet drama, and someone being insulted by a gamedeveloper because said developer revealed an item all rolled into one thread.

I... i lurk to much.

What i'm curious about is the level of extra content. Melee had an insane amount of content, which i loved. Curious if they can improve on that. Individual adventure modes, real endings, unlockable art, costumes, give everyone their one souledge and calibur weapon, and...

Quick question: Is the Perfect Control video done with some sort of assistance?

Um. Yes. Notice the frame shuffler at the top. The game was pretty much slowed down to frame by frame and then put together. It's all possible, but near impossible to be that precise 100% of the time.

Hmmm.... I should really see if I can do that perfect Fox waveshine where he's changing his face direction.

So I got the new EGM in today. Rumor Mill column says, and I quote:

Here's a Super Smash Bros. Brawl nugget for you: I discovered the game will use the popular physics engine Havok (used in games like Crackdown).

So greet this with the normal skepticism that accompanies rumors, especially SSBB rumors, but keep in mind that Sakurai has touted the improved physics and that EGM's Rumor Mill is fairly selective and usually right. Not to say they don't make mistakes, but they've got a pretty good column.

Anyway, I hope they don't give away too many secrets - I still want this game to be a surprise when it comes out.

The thing is, you can stop reading here and stop watching the Smash site right now, but then there's still that bit of info you want to know that will really sell the game to you, but you don't want to know the info that would spoil it so you don't want to buy the game anymore.
When you realize the info you're reading will spoil it, it's already too late :)

So maybe a good question is: what bit of info is it that we need right now that would satisfy our needs completelt but not ruin the surprise?

...

Ha, release date n_n

As much as that would be nice... I really can't find it in myself to have the hope that Nintendo will give us a release date, even at minE3. Maybe a new trailer or something, but I just have this sneaking suspicion that Nintendo will give Brawl's release date separately, maybe when there isn't anything else to take away attention.

...even though all focus would be on that anyway. Meh.

I've got an idea/prediction.

Assist trophies get unlocked as you acquire them as trophies, ssbm style, in the single player.

Just a thought.
Seems more likely you'll simply encounter them as you fight, multiplayer, singleplayer, whatever. If there's a special "item select" for the assist trophies, chances are it'll be hidden by default (as tradition has dictated). Will this hypothetical "trophy select" screen contain all the trophies in the game, or only the ones you've encountered? Or will you unlock the trophy select screen BY encountering all the assist trophies?? If this screen does exist, will it have info on the trophies like the SSBM trophies? If so, approximately how big will the font be? 8 pixels tall? 9? 22? I'm personally hoping somewhere in the range of 11 to 11.4, but I'm not about to get my hopes up =(

Also, the guy who mentioned Mike Jones (from Star Tropics) - indeed, he'd be a great assist trophy. Heck, he'd make a great playable character with a fully awesome set of moves from the original game(s); seems the only thing to stop him is lack of popularity... that didn't stop Game & Watch though! Bah, I'm still pessimistic.

My prediction for stuff they'll release: the thing that Jack just said about the release date sounds likely. As for the stuff we all want to know about (character list etc.), such as Sonic... chances are they'll release that in a trailer, rather than a daily update. As for the updates, I'm hoping soon they'll give the shpiel on Zero Suit Samus (separate character or not?). I'm also looking forward to Metroid stages and Samus moves, Wario moves, Metaknight moves.... I'd be happy with a complete list of (non-hidden) characters and moves right about now =p I'd be happy if the kept a lot of the Final Smashes secret though, have them blow you away first-hand in the game ^_^

To the angry kid who couldn't handle today's update: if you weren't joking... just relax! :) NOW!! ;-)
I'd say "don't worry, tommorow's update is going to be better!", but chances are I'd be lying. To be honest, that was a great update. Obscure characters ahoy!

As for the whole "extra content" topic... I'd be completely content with the amount of stages/items/characters in Melee (less even), so long as they have a whole crapload of assist trophies. I much more care about the quality of extra stuff - if the extra stages aren't fun, if the extra characters are clones, if the assist trophies are totally lame... then it's just not worth it. If all the content gets as much care as Mr. Wright over there, looks like Brawl will be chock-full of quality stuff =]

I'm hoping for some nice single-player though... I want beating to it feel like it needs skill, rather than luck (often Melee depends on luck for me, as I often fall to my death out of the blue ). Things like unique character entrances, unique character endings, etc. would be a bonus. Holy crap, they could have different bosses for each character, tailored to each character's fighting style for maximum fun-ness! That Master Hand's boring old predictable moves just don't cut it anymore.... Samus could fight one of the many classic Metroid bosses, Fox would be able to literally kick giant-Andross-face's face in the face, and Bowser could go up for a final clash against Mario... and of course, Kirby would fight Marx. Ahhh, we can only dream.......

Really, though... eight years old? I fail to see the accuracy of that statement. I, for one, have not known for eight years that Brawl would contain that particular item.

Oh, you mean we knew about the ITEM for eight years. Right. Still, I don't see how that's pointless information, especially how the bumper, in my opinion, is way better than the spinny Melee bumper-thing. Or, at least, more useful. And controllable.

Eldin bridge made my do my little happy dance (big zelda fanboy at heart), but ultimately, I would've rather gone nuts about it when i saw it pop up on my tv screen, controller in hand, and my celebrating smashfriends around me. Same with final smashes.
The update that got me excited was the one sakurai warned everyone would have a different flavour.
I wonder if this also extents to gameplay, a new (rumoured?) physics engine would help.

So apparently it pretty much functions just like the Spinner thing ... since it can stop in the air now ... and like the old bumper since you can throw it on the ground...

So since the new bumper is just the old bumper plus the spinner combined, I wonder if they'll even include the spinner in the final game, instead of both the new bumper and the spinner... which would really be redundant, since the new bumper does both jobs. I mean... it would be redundant. Redundant.

Redundant?

New Spinner = Old Bumper + Spinner

Yeah, that's how EB/Gamstop operates (though it seems like their online store component lets you preorder a game as soon as they have it on the site). I'll be preordering from amazon, at any rate :-P.

Nah, DK's WAY bigger than that in Brawl. Why'd they chose to make him so big, by the way? I really have no idea. If they make Diddy (assuming he's in the game) the same size that he is in Donkey Kong Country (relative to DK), then he'll probably be taller than all of the human characters.

Definitely is. Waay to skinny to be Bowser Jr.

EDIT: IIRC, they're called Bulbins. It shouldn't be too much of a stretch to think that if Sakurai's going to put King Bulbin (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage05.html) in for stage interaction, maybe some of the minions will show up. Eh.

About Samus violating the strict "you must recover" legislation: why bother recovering, when you can instead make Samus do a cool move??

Kirby bouncing there might look like "new physics", in that it might not have been in Melee. But if anyone thinks that you need a physics engine to do that.... HA! HAHAHAHAHAAA!!! Seems like if a physics engine is being used, it would be only used for stuff like animating character's hair, clothes, ragdoll bouncing animations, that sort of thing. Chances are it wouldn't effect gameplay. Looks like there's some new gameplay "physics" though too =)

I never realized it back with Bowser's screenshots, but looking at the shots of DK and the new footage with Bowser, hot damn is there a size difference between the big powerhouses and other characters. Personally, I'm hoping for a DK stage with that brambles theme (http://www.ocremix.org/song/id/20/). A remix of that tune by those composers would surely be good. If a slow/soothing remix doesn't fit with a fight, they could even make great techno-ish remix.

Either that, or a pirate level! =D Chances are a rocking boat (responds to waves and/or players' weight) would be fun. Especially with some pirate-tastic DKC2 remixes ^^
Destructible pirate level with cannons! And barrels! And cannon-barrels! And those pirate krocs that make everyone's favourite sound effect when you attack them! ONNNK!

Well, I agree with Nintendo on this one. Why do you want to show your entire hand at once? You already have your consumer's attention with showing them a little bit of information each and every day. You have them hooked, they'll keep coming back for more and more information. So why do you want to show them more than you have to? Milk it out. Keep it going until the day you release the game in order to ensure that nobody has the slightest chance of forgetting about the biggest thing that has happened to gaming. Ever. Wow, an interesting bit of trivia for anyone... interested.

According to Wiki (which, as you know, knows all):

"DK Rap" was the first-ever incidence of the word "hell" being spoken aloud in a Nintendo game. It ought to be pointed out that Rare is a British company, and in Britain the word "hell" is not viewed with anything like the opprobrium it is in the US. In order to avoid future controversy, when the Rap was used in later games, "hell" was replaced with "heck".

Also worth noting:

The line "His coconut gun can fire in spurts. If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt!" was named the fourth worst game line ever in the January 2002 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Fuck. This game just keeps finding new ways of redefining the word "awesome".

Bwahaha! Oh MAN that rocks!

What's more, given that I don't honestly believe an AC character will make the roster (I expect a Resetti summon, though), this shows that they may be doing quite a few stages that aren't directly tied to the cast. Very cool.

Also, random thought: Given that this is a first time that an 'audience' has existed inside a stage, and given the picture where most are staring at bowser, but the male kid is staring at the clash on the platform, I wonder how detailed they are. Even if it's just looking independantly at whatever they 'find interesting', that'd be really cool.

Oh, and I just dropped in from everywhere, and nowhere. Don't mind me.

I wonder if there are any secret times that things happen at, really strange hours... 3:45 AM ... Tom Nook's big Pimpin' parade.... *shrugs*

Tom would be awesome. Blanca too (draw her face and save in your profile hehe). For some reason I am going to bet its....Ai, the main character for the movie. If I remember at the end of the movie it says See you on the Wii, which is a reference to the Wii game being produced but might open up the option of using her in brawl I guess.

No, don't die!

But there’s more...

If you play a match here on Saturday at 8PM...

Oh, I’m too excited to even say it!

That’s right, a live performance. It’s a good time to be alive...

*wink*

This stage even beats the Mario Sunshine stage in my opinion! Holy smokes :) They keep raising the bar, it's insane! Need...game...now...

Okay, I'm really excited for this game. However...

Am I the only one worried by the fact that all the stages we've seen are essentially flat pieces of ground with a few platforms in the air?

I wonder what songs he'll end up playing -- the standard Animal Crossing songs or K.K.-ified tunes from other Nintendo games?

Good god, read through the thread before asking airheaded questions.

Well, I think it is safe to assume that these stages are standard playable stages. They probably won't reveal hidden stages so those will probably have that needed variety.

I'm not even bothered by it too much, but I would definitely also like to see some different type stages.

Stage looks nice and all, but give me FUN stages, these stages are all alike, and it's starting to get boring. Where are the fun, innovative, and sometimes annoying stages like the poke floats, or rotating brinstar? or even non-flat stages like mushroom kingdom? meh.

Animal Crossing stage makes my head explode in awesome. I also really enjoy the flat stages, my most played stage was the big long flat Starfox one in SSBM (cos I never unlocked the final stage)

That was my favorite stage as well, but it wasn't really flat, at least not like these. These are all pretty much the same, a small platform, with one centered floating platform or two floating platforms on the side. BORING.

AC stage = AC playable character(s)

Mmm...maybe you can use a "man" from AC...or use yours from the Wild World version (or from a futher version for Wii?)...

AC stage = AC playable character(s)

It may have been so in the past games, but it's possible Nintendo is just trying to tap all of it's IP bases here without necessarily following the past formula of a couple of characters and a couple of stages per Nintendo game referenced to.

Not that it wouldn't be pretty sweet. I like the idea for the DS character-transfer.
