I'm extremely biased towards anything kid icarus, so although the instruments sounded a bit thin, I loved this. (I still prefer Nixdorux' version of the main theme, but this one fits more for the battle environment)

Yoshi has that invulnerability to make up for lacking a third jump.

Oh yeah, the song was ok, I mean the sound was pretty bad but I liked the composition (except for the end, that was pretty terrible).

I don't think those are the final versions of those songs, I mean, Melee's soundtrack sounded much better, at least to me. I think Sakurai's just showing us low quality samples of the finished versions.

Sakurai himself seems a bit insecure about certain things.

"You might imagine it to be a bit forced, but I think it sounds quite good."

I would expect someone like this, on a site like this, for a game like this to really be behind everything 100%. It's interesting how his first thought is "well people may think it's forced...". That's the last thing on my mind had it not been for him saying it.

I think he said simillar things on other topics as well.

Kind of like, making a joke about yourself before anyone else does, as a self defense thing...
Oh well. Sometimes I wonder if it really is him in the first place...

he said you might Imagine it to be forced, as in, before listening to the song, yo remember the three songs he mentioned and they don't quite sound like they would fit together. I did imagine the three songs and they did sounded they would be forced together, but after listening to the mix I thought they sounded good, as sakurai himself stated. He is not saying that they sound forced, just that some people would think they would sound forced together.

well we've heard what, 3, 4 songs? I don't remember well but if melee is any indication we'll have one song for each game plus other extras thrown in, plus menu themes, adventure mode songs and many others. They've only shown demos so far, and the only song we've heard completely was the one composed by Uematsu for the presentation.

I'd say, hold on to your socks, because when the game comes out the music will surely deliver. They won't tout their list of musicians if they weren't going to deliver something worth of their fame. I don't think an artist like Mitsuda would make a crappy song for the game and call it a day.

Actually, I think it would be more than nice. It's a must. Personal taste about the arrangement aside, the Icarus song is just plan low quality sound wise. And that's not the only one (though I absolutely love the zelda one) They have to be orchestrated, this must be demos...

You do realize that about 90% of Melee is "not" orchestrated? And yes, I do think that these are not the final arrangements.

I remember people saying the same thing about Twilight Princess, and look how that turned out. Some songs were recorded, but a vast majority were MIDIs. It wasn't bad at all, though. Brawl's music should be good, even if it's not orchestrated.

As do I. It was when the e3 trailer was first revealed. Hopefully these updates are just so that we know what the arrangements will sound like if they do get orchestrated, then recorded. Also, when I heard the Kid Icarus theme, I didn't think it would fit the level at all, but when I listened to the song and looked at the images on the previous update, it matched really nice.

Strike911
08-09-2007, 01:38 AM
Yeah the whole Twilight Princess recorded vs. midi thing does pop up in my head... I mean, I love TP, don't get me wrong, but there's a difference between the midi style classics from the Zelda series and some really nice recorded styles, like from, say, Shadow of the Colossus, and Smash Bros Melee.

I feel like Nintendo has kind of fallen down a peg. I certainly hope they use real recordings as opposed to a MIDI version, because its just so much more dynamic and high quality. Brawl will be a great game, but when a developer has gone the extra mile to hire an orchestra and other musicians to get the themes really hammered out, it just makes the game that much more appealing... that much more refined and polished. I mean, I mentioned Shadow of the Colossus earlier; the music in that game REALLY adds to the entire package, it gives it that extra bit of polish that makes it a stellar game.

I feel like most of Nintendo's games are a little behind the curve in this respect. There are exceptions that prove the rule, but ... generally speaking, Nintendo reeeally prefers midi over live recordings.

... I do wonder if the music they're releasing on the website is final and merely an arrangement of what a live recording will end up.

Anyway, if the music isn't live, since they're more or less saving money by not having to hire live musicians, I hope that they're at least using that cash to make the game better in other aspects. If we get a ridiculously stellar game and a midi soundtrack I'm cool with that. The way its turning out, Brawl is already looking real awesome.

It's going to MIDI, not much we can do about it.

KWarp

The desire for live recordings is an American cultural aspect derived from our history with Cinema. Japan grew up differently and doesn't consider orchestration as important.

Neither synthetic music nor orchestras are inherently better than another. Some artists are simply more capable of composing (in this case adapting) their music more in one style than another.

Brawl's music right now strikes me as an oddity. The music is composed in an orchestrated style, but performed with syths that don't sound very balanced. They must be works in progress, to be either orchestrated or equalized.

EDIT: The music. Let me put my 2 cents down. They gave us stellar music in Melee and I want that same calibur of awesomeness to return. Synthesized music is often kind of bland and not nearly as expressive as the real thing... because it's not real. THEY CAN BE though... I'm cool with midi's, but make them damn good midi's... the Ocarina Medley on the SmashBros site was amazing, but.... this Kid Icarus one... not so much. Again I'm cool with Midi's as long as they're GOOD. Seriously, towards the end of the Kid Icarus song it sounds like a midi that someone has applied soundfonts to at the end... no lie. All those orchestra hits and stuff. I just don't want the audio quality from the second game to drop down a peg as the new one comes out. And I doubt that will happen, but... yeah, it does feel a little forced.

That's all I'm saying.

Well, everyone had a blocking animation in Melee, just the bubble obscured it. Meh, I just thought it was one of those hard last minute shield usages where you hear like a thud upon impact and see no bubble. It could be Ike pulling up his sword after Aether and not reacting to the damage too.

It's vanity shot... that's all it is.

Gotta throw a fact down: Recordings of real instruments don't sound like the real instruments. You don't get the room-filling vibracity even with lossless recording. A recording of a violin isn't a violin. It's a musical illusion of one. That said, synths in live recordings are on the same level. However, live recordings phrase themselves naturally while synths need to be meticulously designed as such.

I would have to agree with Makai. It looks like Ike and that Centurion just happened to land an attack at exactly the same time. The effect you are talking about Strike911, looked more like dust bouncing off of the character than a bubble like the photo.

True. When this stuff gets brought up I always remember a lot of Capcom's fighting games in the last 5 years... it's all jazzy and not the first kind of music you would originally expect in a game devoted entirely to fighting. Things will mesh well, I'm comfortable knowing that it's worked in the past.

Alright all you Mother fans out there. You tell me, what's this badge got to do with reflecting projectiles? I've never played the game.Gladly.

The Franklin Badge reflects lightning attacks. It is received shortly before fighting the leader of the Happy Happy Cultists, Mr. Carpainter, who mainly used PSI lightning attacks. However, this picture on the website differs significantly from the plainer one seen in the Earthbound strategy guide...

And this does pretty much confirm Ness's return.

EDIT: Is Pikachu's Thunderbolt considered projectile? I could see a potential inconsistency here.

Strike911
08-10-2007, 08:28 AM
Im pretty sure that thunderbolt attack isn't a projectile...

I think the simplest way to put it is that the Franklin Badge will protect you from things that could be reflected by Fox (...or absorbed by Ness... or also reflected by Zelda). >_<

Theoretically though, if we were going to be REALLY story sensitive it would make the holder immune to most everything Pikachu's got, but there's no way in hell that's happening.

cool. I'm diggin' the fact that you kind of wear this item. It's kind of like the bunny ears, but ... more wearable.

This kind of makes me hope for more wearable items that have various enhancement and such. :)

That's because it's based on the promotional badge that was sold with copies of Mother 3 in Japan, rather than the in-game one from EB. Though technically the badge is a reprint of the one they sold with Mother 1, but still.

Possible proof we'll see an M3 character then?

The Franklin Badge has nothing to do with Paper Mario.
We'll probably get some Paper Mario assist trophies but I think we already have to many Mario related playable characters for they to add one more.

It also played a more turning point-important role in Mother 3.

But yeah, as far as items go, the Franklin Badge is 'fuck yeah' -epic-.

I'd also say that, even if unlikely, this only guarentees the return of a main Mother character. Just because I know if they re-skin Ness into Lucas, even if he plays the same, there's gonna be a bit of bitching.

Unless in the next couple months Nintendo somehow decides to release a localized Mother 3 on the Virtual Console. I'm not holding my breath in the slightest, but that would be pretty amazing.

Either way, I'm excited about the inclusion of the Franklin Badge. A memorable item with an interesting gameplay effect is quite welcome.

Much respect here.

Your videos here remind me of when I started getting decent at the game. Your technical prowess is great but you're playing too fast in the sense that you're mostly tapping into your technical ability but hardly having any mind games. Your opponents movements are far more reserved than you and was still able to keep up neck to neck most of the time. I say slow down a bit... your constant aggressive movement keeps you getting hit frequently. Other than that, I like what I see and I'd actually wouldn't mind having a match against you at some point.

P.S. On the G&W video, I definitely went "OH SHIT" at the up-tilt flag to 9-Sign K.O. combo near the beginning. ::thumbs up::

You're great with IC once you get a grab in, you just need to get those grabs more often. Try sheild grabbing more, when your opponent sheilds WD into dsmash to grab, just try and get it going

I always thought they would use Ash if they put a trainer in the games, not a non-name. Part of me was looking forward to it.

At least this time the player can't just stick around with one and ignore the other forms like a Zelda (I mean Sheik) player could. Can't imagine that anyone would want to play as a Squirtle regularly.

Actually, I can't imagine anyone would want to play as Squirtle at all. A Wartortle at least sounds cooler.

This is the first one that I am genuinely curious about how alternate costumes are going to look. What will the Pokemon wear? Will they change colors like Mewtwo?

Strike911
08-13-2007, 08:13 AM
... dude, it's going to be rock paper scissors thing. Squirtle will probably be all speed and the weaker of the three. Ivysaur will be balanced between speed and attack power, Charizard will be all heavy powerful yet slow attacks. That's how it will be. I have forseen the truth in my mind's eye!

I am a little sad that it's not Ash, but here's hoping for an alternate color scheme wear he's got an Ash look. :)

Holy fuck... I blew a load when I saw this update. And I think I just did again...

...

...yeah. I did. Really, the possibilities that this opens up are amazing. How will damage be handled? After all, it seems that 'Ash' (I'll call him that for lack of a name) can switch out his Pokemon at will, so if Charizard gets 30%, Squirtle gets 10%, and Ivysaur gets 45%, will it all be cumulative, or will each Pokemon have a separate damage counter? Can Pokemon be knocked out (as in, can they faint)? Are these the ONLY 3 that can be used, or will they add more before the game's release? Does this mean that these 3 aren't in the Pokeball item?

Why would they want to have to make 3 movesets for one character?

All valid questions that I hope will be answered soon.

Smash Bros characters are from video games, so he would technically have been called "Red" because that's what the model they've shown is. Perhaps they went with "Pokemon Trainer" so that there can be alternate trainer models, maybe one from each Pokemon game generation?

Paratha
08-13-2007, 08:49 AM
How will this work on a stage like the scrolling DK one?

Something like this, maybe: as long as you command the Pokemon to jump, the trainer will jump as well in order to stay alive.

We'll have to see for ourselves just how bad the consequences are for staying in one character for too long. If they turn out to be pretty severe, then there might not be a good Zelda/Sheik comparison.

I'm not a Pokemon fan, but, wow... amazing character choice, including the 3 "main" pokemon (and a trainer) without using 3 separate characters. Now I have high hopes that they'll be doing weirder things with some of the other characters, in the same vein as Wario's gas-build-up and his bike. Hopes they'll replace some of Melee's (and admittedly the original's) more useless and uninteresting moves with... useful and interesting ones!! =D

Perhaps the alternate costumes are... other completely different pokemon trainers?? Team Rocket????? Heh, Team Rocket could be a whole other character, where you control Meowth, and... whatever other ones that they have.

Sadly, it might be too alike to Sheik/Zelda (aka Sheik is top tier, Zelda is low tier and used only for her recovery)
Each of the three probably has different weaknesses/strengths... let's just hope the added versatility doesn't make the trainer TOO good.

!Nekko!

Smash Bros characters are from video games, so he would technically have been called "Red" because that's what the model they've shown is. Perhaps they went with "Pokemon Trainer" so that there can be alternate trainer models, maybe one from each Pokemon game generation?

I have absolutely no clue what's going on in your sig, but I think I like it.

That's the guy who hides "Totaka's song" in games he composes for. I mean REALLY hides. It may not be found in Brawl for weeks, months, YEARS. Read the description of this video, and watch it for a short taste of its awesomeness:

When playing in the Winner Out and Loser Out variations of Tournament Melee, hold L & R while selecting any character. I'm wondering if it's possible at all to survive this character's attack. If the entire platform scrolls away, even those who can fly will have a hard time hanging on for a significant period of time.

Wasn't this the character that was a "hidden trophy" in Melee at one point? Like, a removed trophy from the Japanese version?

Strike911

Yeah but they're from the TV show not the game, if they were going to do that the Pokemon trainer would look like Ash instead of Red.

Well, Jesse James and Meowth were in Yellow version... Ash and pals were in Puzzle League on N64. Not to mention all the voices from the Pokemon themselves are from the show. So there is some kind of precedent that they don't mind borrowing from the show.

Meh, they could make it happen if they wanted to. Not holding my breath, but if they really wanted to they could. It's all Nintendo's property.

@ this update:

Hmm, I'm willing to bet some scrolling stages will just see a change in current direction, while others will just be shifted a little. All stages probably have a set couple of directions you can go in. Shifts down in stationary stages will be annoying; the horizontal area to get knocked out of will be the same, but the distance you can go vertically will be greatly diminished.

I doubt they would make it so that their is no platforms to land on... I don't think it makes sense to be like that... but... it IS the devil.

This seems like it has a high propensity to get really annoying. It'll probably end up bunched with other moves people hate.... like Togepi's NightShade attack.

Interesting, but... meh. Obviously, this pales in comparison to the wicked awesome Pokemon trainer announcement, but then again, almost anything probably will.

Edit: that foosball is the devil.

Well, I finally got some gameplay footage up on youtube. It took me WAY to long to get my capture card to do what I wanted and then finding the right file type to encode the movie in was a pain.

Virtual Dub basically failed me, so I ended up using Windows Movie Maker of all things. I certainly wasn't expecting it to work as well as it did, but it's capture function was actually better than VDub's. Or at least it was simple enough for me to do what I wanted.

I am well aware of that, but the Yellow version was based on the TV show, as were a few of the other games. Sure it's possible, but I think it's very very unlikely that stuff derived for/from the anime will end up in brawl, just because of the nature of smash bros games.

I assume you're thinking of the Footstool Jump and that was my first thought too.

While I'm still a bit leery of the concept of that maneuver, I can foresee it being a necessary tool to survive this trophy on most stages. Although, given that, the trophy can't last too long or else you'll run out of people to bounce off and Meteor Smash into oblivion. This also makes me think that the Footstool Jump will be infinitely repeatable, but simply difficult to execute.

Well, it'll be cool to see some character art from old games, although, realistically this is pretty useless imo. What's the point? If I wanted to do this I could download a zillion different images from the net and just copy-paste them together in PhotoShop with more ease and more functionality.

There has to be more to this. I don't believe Nintendo would put some "creation feature" into a game that does nothing more than waste space (and time). Sure, it might be fun, but maybe creating an online avatar or something? Maybe wallpaper for the background for the menus.

There HAS to be something more to the whole sticker concept than just sticking stickers on to a piece of virtual paper and saving it... I mean even Camera mode could save interesting shots IN-GAME... I mean, this is just 2D images that you just place... that's it?!

In fact, I BET THIS is the online component of Smash Bros! I bet you'll share these online... i bet that's what SSBB's "online functionality" will be (taking into account Nintendo's reluctance to pursue a real online gaming experience).

Now if you could make levels and place stickers into those levels (like you can in the LittleBigPlanet video demonstrations) then that's useful little feature... but... just paper? Meh.

It'll be fun to collect them, it was always fun unlocking something in Smash Bros Melee... but.. again, the concept is kind of "meh" for me.

Uninteresting update, but you can't win 'em all. I'd be annoyed if this were a Friday update, though.

In fact, I BET THIS is the online component of Smash Bros! I bet you'll share these online... i bet that's what SSBB's "online functionality" will be (taking into account Nintendo's reluctance to pursue a real online gaming experience).

Ugggh, if you're right about this....

But yeah, what they should do with this is allow you to design some kind of an emblem and then stick it ONTO a character, a la F-Zero GX or Mario Kart DS. Personalize it a bit. Maybe. That would still be "meh", just not so much as this. Now, if you could just draw freely and then post THAT online, things would be a bit more interesting. But they'd never do it.
