Now this will shake up gameplay quite a bit. I really hope it makes those characters very good in the sense that it takes a good amount of control to get the most out of them.

Hm. More than adding to the characters who can glide now, I see this taking away from Peach. Her float-canceling in Melee made her pretty unique, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

EDIT- This is all moot if you have to fall as you glide, though.

Strike911
08-30-2007, 09:51 AM
Okay, the first time I saw glide on the Smash Bros site I immediately thought of Knuckles the Echidna.... okay n/m...

been playing too much Sonic & Knuckles...

/offtopic

Cool move though. A swoop like that would be real cool.

I wonder if any items like a set of wings will show up that will let you do large gliding swoops with any of the other characters. (Maybe the wing cap from mario 64?) I mean, hey, they put the screw attack item in that affects what kind jump you can make, why not something to let other chars glide too.

It looks like a lot of fun using that ability!

Neo Samus

That's interesting. It adds a new strategy element to the mix.

Sir_NutS
08-30-2007, 03:43 PM
now that I think about it, it should work like SMW's cape. As you glide, if you point up you will gain height but eventually lose speed and start to lose horizontal ground, if you point down you can gain speed but will go down faster as well, so it would be kind of a balance there.

Can't wait to try it out.

BTW, I can bet my life now that little mac will be on the game now (I mean, even the simcity guy is in there) the question is wether he'll appear as a playable character or an assist trophy.

Dunther

Maybe even Mario can do this with his cape?

eternal Zero
08-30-2007, 06:07 PM
If Mario gets the capability to glide he should have to do it old school with his cape and everything and have to alternate up and down to catch the air in his cape.

Bigfoot
08-30-2007, 06:38 PM
Maybe the feather will just be an item in the game for everyone to use(like the screw attack). That'd be funny to see Bowser using a cape to glide back onto the stage.

Tenucha
08-30-2007, 10:09 PM
I havn't seen the Feather mentioned... just that winged characters can glide now.
Wouldn't Mario's cape from SMW be annoying if you're trying to glide back on it and adjusting the up/down to catch air?
I think they should include the Tanooki Suit for Mario and Luigi

I love it!

I wonder what this "reward" could be...? Avoiding damage (while those who lose the minigame get hurt)? Getting healed? Bragging rights?

The developers probably don't think that "weird shaped levels" fit Brawl's play style... but it'd still be nice to see a few levels with walls and stuff in there.

Not really, you have to have skills to wing in a random stage.

I never got why some people hated some stages for tournament play. If you can play well, you should know how to exploit a stage to your advantage. Playing only in predictable stages means that you are too set in one strategy and cannot adapt.

For those that follow tournament rules, the ban on Poke Floats was lifted ages ago.

Yeah whenever I play smash with friends I demand we have items on low, and they all always complain. Personally I think it's actually a lot more fun with items. Anyway, this new wario stage is incredible. I can't wait. Still though, it makes me a bit sad that they've totally ignored what the wario games were REALLY all about, which were the "land" games. I hope at the very least you'll be able to switch into his old outfit if you like.

As long as he has a few good Warioland moves, I'll be happy. His forwards A (while running) move better be that Warioland shoulder-check thing that he does! Fwooshshoohwwoshooww! And his throws better look like he's throwing Warioland enemies! And he'd better turn into a ball and roll forever when you press down on a slope! oh wait, that last one wouldn't work too well in Smash...

I have no clue what his B-up move could possible be. Hopefully it's something both hilarious and non-gaseous. Same for his B neutral and his Final Smash...... now I'm all curious!!!

I agree with all of this. I say his down-B should be the body slam/pound thing, but we already know it isn't...also yeah, his barge ought to be side-B, but I'm pretty sure that's something to do with his motorcycle. Haha, maybe his B neutral could switch caps (/pots/whatever) between Bull Wario, Dragon Wario, Jet Wario, and so on, each with different abilities and strengths...and maybe really rarely it'll stick you randomly with one of his "hindrance" forms, like snowman Wario, fat Wario, tiny Wario, ball-o-string Wario...

And yeah, before you say it I know none of that will ever happen but you can't deny it would be amazing. Really I think they should just have his character entirely based on the Land games and keep the stage from Wario Ware to cover everything. Haha which reminds me, a Kitchen Island stage would be great.

it's funny how all these people have this misconception that everyone who plays in tournaments hates playing on anything other than final destination with no items, because they can't deal with them/they're scared of items/they don't know how to adapt.

to anyone who thinks this, im sure any good competitive player would happily play you with whatever rules you want, more than likely four-stocking you every round. if you live in the continental US, you can probably find something going on not too far away, just check the regional zones forum of smashboards.

we don't play with items off because we're afraid of losing to casual players. if someone is signifantly better than they're opponent, items will almost definetely not change the outcome. the items-off rule came about due to evolution of the metagame. people played in tournaments for a long time with items still on, and before everyone finally agreed to turn items off for tournaments, there was a huge and long debate about it. but as people got better and more competitive, the need for no items became more apparant.

also about only wanting to play on final destination: couldn't be more wrong. for the entire month of july, i went on a smash brothers road trip with friends from alaska to the lower 48, staying with a whole bunch of competitive smashers on our way to tournaments. pretty much EVERYONE we stayed with said they actually hate or dislike final destination because it's boring compared to the other stages. it's just stages like flat zone, icicle mountain and big blue that you just can't play seriously on.

i completey respect people who play casually, enjoying items and crazy stages. im just tired of people always saying that competitive players play the way they do because they don't want to adapt and because they're afraid they'll lose to casual players. you have to keep in mind that competitive players used to play just like you, and the way we play now is due to evolution of metagame over years of competitive playing.

i hope that cleared up some misconceptions, and that we can all just respect the different ways people play the game.

I dunno what his upB will be, but it looks like his dB will be able to aid his recovery. The more you've charged it, the more so. On melee, some characters had fBs that helped their recoveries. (Marth, Mario, Doc, Roy, Luigi, Pikachu, Pichu, Yoshi) Zelda, Ganon, and CF too, but in a different way. I think Wario's chopper may help him return to the stage, maybe in the manner of Yoshi's fB.

You know what would be neat?

A stage creator.

Like, you could put up platforms/walls where you wanted... and choose the style (ie. what game the stage is from) to get a series of special effects or background thingamajigs... like, if you chose Mario style, you could put in a Bullet Bill cannon, or something... and maybe the stickers could manifest themselves into hazards of just background things to make things more interesting. Like, if you have a Starman sticker, you could just have shooting stars in the background.

Just occurred to me. It probably wouldn't work for a variety of reasons, but it's still entertaining to think about...

There should be an internet rule about quoting Sakurai in order to prove your point - sort of like the opposite of Godwin's Law: if you can quote Sakurai, even out of context, in your argument, then you automatically win. The only exception is using a Sakurai quote to compare your opponents to Nazis, if that's even possible.

So I went to a tourney on Saturday. My partner and I got raped in teams, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Singles went much better though. I tied for 17th, which isn't great, but I lost to worthy competition. My first loss came to a guy named Sensei, who's ranked fourth in New Jersey. My elimination loss came to a girl named milktea, who just happens to be PC Chris' girlfriend. They were close matches, so no shame. I had fun, and I finally proved that I can go to a tourney and not choke. And now I'm ranked ninth in my state's power rankings!

Bummer... looks like there will be zero dialogue in this game.
On an interesting side note, my roommate was dead convinced that Palutena was Farore before I googled an image of her and showed it to him... could be, though, now that I think about it. Nice little game overlap?

I actually figured it out early in the game, I wont spoil much more, but they give you a lot of blatantly obvious clues.

In fact, with the preview channel, I had a good idea what was gonna be one of the bosses. They left a lot of breadcrumbs.

Well, I like to discover these things on my own. It's not like the guy committed a mortal sin, but there definitely isn't anything "cool" about intentionally posting spoilers. It doesn't deserve a 'GTFO', but it should be avoided and looked down upon.

And I'm assuming that you people have already beaten the game, and therefore may be a bit biased and tend to think "Why do I care I beat it already", but I have yet to actually beat the game, and was kinda looking forward to the surprise.

Can we get back on topic here? Diddy's up-B being chargeable should be interesting. I wonder if you pre-charge it, like DK's B, or charge it as you fall (or if you stop/slow down in the air while you charge it).

No it isn't - it's been a very long time since I've played a great game I knew nothing about beforehand, and thus it's been a very long time, probably since Metroid Prime, that I've experienced that same kind of surprise and joy of playing such a game and finding something new. I'd rather go "wow this is amazing" DURING the game than before it, only to get the game and go "yeah, there's that, I already know about that" like it was for me with Twilight Princess. I think I'm actually going to just stop reading about the game altogether, be it here or on the dojo site.

In short, spoilers piss me off.

One thing that worries me about some moves characters have is that some of them can "break" and become unusable (or can they?)

Take Diddy there for example: when his gun pops, does it just stay broken untill KO-ed? What about the jet-barrels? Does he have to pick them up again like Wario's chopper or does he have infinite acces to these jet-barrels?

I know the game was meant to play somewhat different, but I wouldn't want certain moves to become unavailble for a certain time, or permanently.
Imagine using Rest as Jigglypuff, but you miss and you get smacked and lose the Rest ability...You're pretty much screwed then 0_0; (hold your rants about how awesome you are with Jiggly and you don't rely on Rest, you know what I'm talking about).

0_0;

Eulogic

I imagine charging Diddy's gun too long will have the same effect as charging Roy's neutral-B too long. He'll take some damage, but still have access to the move. The jet barrels will probably just explode and not leave remains.

Don't know how I feel about Mario's new move. It's cool I guess, the spin move didn't deserve 'special move status' since it wasn't a real reference to other Mario games (unless you count the spinning jump from SMW).

Oh good, I actually was starting to dislike the idea of including Pokemon Stadium again (instead of something better), but this doesn't seem bad. I wonder what role the Pokemon will play on this level, as I don't recall there being a precedent for their appearance in the prior games in this stage... Hopefully it will be interactive like in Saffron City, despite the fact that it doesn't look like they're doing anything in these pictures (well, I guess Skarmory is flying around... but I never really liked him/her/it). The ground transformation is by far the most interesting; Dugtrio and Cubone cameos :D And, it would kind of be cool if something happened with that (Helix?) fossil... Also, why do I get the feeling that people will claim to see faces in the ice block (lol).

Additionally, I can't wait to shoot people into things with Mario's new special. I like the implications this may have on team battles, and the creation and implementation of semi-elaborate traps. The possibilities for two people working together (especially with items) keeps getting more and more interesting and multi-faceted.

Weird. I find it hard to believe that the tornado is a regular (or smash) attack. Perhaps Sunshine Mario is a costume change with variant moves? Or maybe you can customize the special moves for each character (selecting from a small list for each slot), to be saved to your profile?

Sir_NutS

I'm sure this will piss off plenty of people who played as Mario and Dr Mario, though.

The character I played the most with in melee was mario. He might not be the best character in melee, but i don't play melee in competitions/tournaments to choose a hardcore character and just used to play with what felt better. About the change, it doesn't really bothers me as I rarely used his cape move.

His moveset would now be:
up+B=Uppercut
forward+B=Fireball
Down+B=F.L.U.D.D.
B=Tornado
Final Smash=Fireball barrage (or whatever it'll be called)

Also, not digging the idea of superjumps in one version of the pokemon stage, but eh, you can't win them all I guess.

Neo Samus
09-06-2007, 03:00 PM
I still don't understand why so many people bitched about SMS. I thought the game was amazing......except for that commerical...yikes. Anyway, that's cool that F.L.U.D.D. is a special move now. It kinda stinks that The Cape is gone but just like Sir Nuts said, I rarely used that move.

I get the idea that Mario's tornado attack got mapped to d-air. It's a natural combo used in midair in the Nintendo World trailer. Also, IIRC, he used the tilt + B cape earlier in the same trailer.

It seems logical to me that the d-air drill kick was cut for the tornado. But when my logic's based on a 10-month old trailer...

The Mutericator

It almost looks like each character will have a personal equipment item that goes through each battle... Mario's FLUDD, Samus' Suit, Wario's bike, Diddy's Rocket Barrels (maybe maybe not).

Interesting possibility. This really isn't going to be Melee 1.5 at all, it's going to really make that same jump that Melee did from classic Smash... a completely new game, a thousand times better, if this all works out (and I trust Sakurai).

Damn, this is looking to be pretty spiffy. And I like that Sakurai is putting enough thought into the game to know that people have favorite songs, too. Despite what anyone says, I LOVED playing Hyrule Temple with the Fire Emblem music going on. It's nice that I'll be able to switch up the songs as I like.

Although the arrangement could have been a little better, what really disappoints me about the Pokemon music is, again, the samples. Better instruments would have made for a WAY better experience, and all we can hope is that these are just temporary 'rough draft' songs. Although, I really liked the evolution reference at the end. Well played, sir.

Sorry Diddy, I think you've just been replaced for best update ever. This game will be worth it just for the music alone. Collecting CDs is a genius move. And if the evolution theme is for when the Pokemon Stadium stage alters (which it surely is), then I will be very impressed, since this kind of trend might be carried onto other levels. I like the singing in the main theme, why can't the rest of the music sound as awesome as the main theme? why?!

p.s. what are they even saying?

So, one song on each stage. There at at least 3 Zelda songs in that screen, possibly 4. Although it may be bad to assume that just because a song is in there it will have its own stage. :|

After comparing the songs put up today, I really really doubt that such a disparity in quality would exist; it would be really confusing and awkward. Considering all the effort being put in the game, it's probably a safe bet these songs aren't final, and will be recorded later. I don't know why, but I became very happy when I saw that there was an option for "Castle Music/Fortress Boss." Maybe a mix of SMW and Yoshi's Island? I just don't have a clue as to what he meant by saying the main theme is the "core" of the game. Does anyone know if there is more to it than just being the main theme? He always messes with you right at the end...

Do you guys think of the possibility of Nintendo adding songs (as in secret) from other games like the ones on the Musicians (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/music/music01.html) page?
Maybe even like Golden Sun?

So THAT'S why there were so many musicians. Haha. I kind of figured something like this would pop up, honestly (or hoping at the very least). With as many songs as it sounds like there will be, it'll be quite amazing if they all get an orchestral treatment (aside from the ones that are straight rips, of course). Still, music is usually one of the very last things finalized for a game. so it could really go either way.

Alls I need to hear from the music now is Delfino Plaza and the main menu theme song from Metroid Prime 2, that rap-electronic song, and I'll be set for music

This is my favorite update so far. Notice how you don't see "Ocarina of Time Medley" for the Bridge of Eldin stage? There's probably going to be way more than four songs per stage to pick from!

I also love that they kept the Melee-style menus and changed the dark blue & red to white & gray, as it really fits the Wii, I think. Plus it just makes things seem brighter in general. Also, another neato thing: looks like each stage is going to have the original title art for its game, i.e. Bridge of Eldin has a little The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess logo on the bottom right! Pretty nifty, even if they did keep the Smash Icons from previous titles, which I also like.

I logged in to say how awesome this update is. I agree (and I have been saying) that these songs are probably not final and are just showcases of the arrangements that will be recorded later. I'm sure the musicians are worried about getting all the songs rearranged at this point rather than recording the final copy.

Also, the Castle Music/Fortress Boss theme from SMW is one of my favorite tracks in any video game, ever. What awesomeness now that it appears to be in the game. Can't wait to hear the arrangement.

Just think about all the damn themes. There might be just about every song from each franchise. It looks that way from the way the guy was talking. He said some songs wouldn't even be redone, which suggests that he's trying to cram everything in there rearranged or not.

After looking at the pics again, which are now conveniently posted here, there are arrows on both song lists that suggest that the lists are longer than just 4 songs. Which really makes me happy.

And, amen to the stroke thing. I think Sakurai is slowly pusing us to the point that in order to even survive these updates, we'll need to be heavily medicated to counteract the SHEER AWESOME.

Smashgasm (noun)

Also, the evolving part sounds freaking AWESOME. Rock guitar? Well played, Sakurai. Well played.

Of course, given that there will be more than one Pokemon song, I hope they put in the battle theme from fighting Uxie, Azelf, or Mesprit. Literally so awesome, I went into battle with the Pokemon, and didn't make a move for 10 minutes just so I could hear the song over and over again. Bloody awesome.

I think Ship hold or Boss Bossanova (I think that's what it's called) would probably be the most fitting, in addition to that one. I'm so tired of hearing the same song on DK stages over and over (similarly true for Pokemon). Also, it didn't say that the song choices won't overlap between stages, yet it seems like people are thinking the lists will be exclusive for each individual arena?

I don't mean to go against what people want, but I think letting people use their own music would ruin the game. The whole point of SSB (as a series) is franchise interaction, yet having them bound by common factors. By putting in your own music, it's like withdrawing from the atmosphere and environment the game intends to create, not to mention discrediting the work of all those composers...

I don't care either way either. Give me a lousy/shitty/tinny MIDI and I'd be fine too.

But technically, they have no excuses as usual. Especially for a company the size and pedigree of Nintendo, getting at least slightly better sounding sound should be a non issue. But APPARENTLY, it is. So really, I don't think the complaints can be shot down entirely.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read. You're telling me that you never muted the TV and play music while playing Smash Bros.?

I've heard the Zelda theme a billion times before. I don't think it will detract from the environment too much in a multiplayer fighting game that I have played thousands of times before if I listen to other music.

On the other hand, if I do want to listen to my own music in a game, I'm more likely to mute the TV and turn on my own music so it's not starting and stopping between matches.

Um... I haven't. I actually have never played a match against anyone who has. What I think Hobocop is trying to say is that certain songs are put there for a distinct reason, design-wise. Even the choices in songs that we are given are somewhat superficial, because we can't choose any unlocked song for a stage, just unlocked songs that the designers allow. For instance, it looks that I can't have the SMW Castle theme play on Bridge of Eldin.

Allowing people to use SD card music basically allows people to completely bypass every song that was carefully crafted for the game; after all, we don't know yet exactly how things will play out, and it is completely possible that certain songs were hand-crafted to elicit a particular response from us as players.

Besides, there is a difference between using SD cards for music and muting the game to play stuff from iTunes; it seems superficial, but on some psychological level, it's not. By using SD card music, you are trying to blend content into the game that doesn't belong there, which may or may not work with the design of the game. When you are muting the game, you are making a conscious decision to detract yourself from the game; it's kind of like immersion, but in a slightly different way.

That's correct. I do wish that you could select multiple iterations of each (or some) character(s), a la Hyper Street FIghter: Anniversary edition. That way we could have like, Windwaker Link and TP link, or something crazy like that. And the screen would be less cluttered if they did things that way, too.

Yeah - better yet, if they replaced the costume system with that. That would also allow for Dr. Mario and Mario to be one, and also Wario and Wario Ware Wario. I know a lot of people have already said that here, but I still think it bears repeating.

Anyway, I definitely think Wario's bike WILL just come out of nowhere. Similar to how Yoshi's egg just appears in Melee. His bike is a SPECIAL MOVE, it actually said that on the website.

We all knew this. Mike was being sarcastic.

There are also two versions of Wario. One with a bike and one without. It's not like he's gonna pull the bike out of nowhere, that'd be silly.

I think the screenshot of Charizard holding a rock clearly shows that there are two versions of the Pokemon trainer. One where Charizard is holding a rock, and one where Charizard is not holding a rock.

I wonder what FLUDD Mario's Final Smash will be...! I think he'll shoot water!

FLUDD Mario? He's not a separate character. It's just regular Mario except with FLUDD at down+b.

For the music discussion:
I sometimes turned the game music off (but not the sound effects) and used my pc to listen some good music that fits in the fight :)

People really lack sarcasm detection on the interwebs.

Put some new vids up. I'd appreciate comments and criticism.

For some reason, my video capture card isn't capturing in game sound, so I have to keep adding my own background music. It's kind of frustrating. I'd rather save my own music for like a combo video or something. Oh well, I'm just glad my capture card is recording video right now.

Which one are you?

EDIT- In any case, that Roy needs alot of work. He pretty much did everything wrong except edgeguard well. Too many counters, too many DEDs, and he didn't follow up the dtilt with nair or uair a single time. Roy can juggle, and this Roy didn't do any. The Mario was slow and predictable, and didn't press his aerial advantage at all. Nair to dsmash is a pretty basic and reliable Mario combo, and more fireballs would at least keep that Roy honest with his fsmash.

Pretty slow match, IMO. Jam touched on most of the points I saw. Probably the biggest critique here from me is the videos are chock full of "wrong" moves. I say "wrong" not in the sense that there's a wrong way to play but in the sense that you guys hardly capitalize on openings by not making the wisest choices out of all your options.

I do. It especially helps for aerials.
