Which one are you?

EDIT- In any case, that Roy needs alot of work. He pretty much did everything wrong except edgeguard well. Too many counters, too many DEDs, and he didn't follow up the dtilt with nair or uair a single time. Roy can juggle, and this Roy didn't do any. The Mario was slow and predictable, and didn't press his aerial advantage at all. Nair to dsmash is a pretty basic and reliable Mario combo, and more fireballs would at least keep that Roy honest with his fsmash.

I was Mario. Thanks for the critiques. (You too GT, I just don't know how to double quote yet.)

Neither of us play those characters normally if you didn't already notice, but I'll keep in mind what you said about missing openings and I'll try out the nair to d-smash. I also agree that my friend was spamming counter too much. I guess those were the kinds of openings you were talking about. I would use down smash more often but I often get hit in return when I do that because my friend Crouch Cancels just about everything. As a matter of fact, in that video you can see him trying to pull a counter off of a crouch cancel a few times. I'm not really sure of the best way to avoid this.

Did you get to look at the team battle any? The ending is pretty funny. I recorded some more today, but I won't have time to put any of it up until next weekend.

Hm, after reading that, I kind of want some pointers. Any recommendations on methods of recording matches? Me and my rival Tastycorn are both pretty good players, and we're locked in a dead tie right now, so if you could give me some pointers (or shed some light on any of his weak points you see!), that would be helpful.

So. How might I go about making a match for you guys to commentate on?

I record all of my footage on cassette tape as I am playing, and then I plug my VCR into my computer's capture card via composite video cables and record what I need using Windows Movie Maker. Unfortunately, I only have composite video cables and no audio; Therefore, I always have to substitute my own audio for the in game audio.

(also, if I used a camera to record, you could hear all of the trash talk that occurs during my matches :)

I'm afraid I am frightfully undereducated in terms of video capture technology. I suppose I'll just have to use a video camera or something of the sort.

Make sure you turn off all other lights, and just keep the camera on a flat surface as opposed to trying to hold it yourself.

In other news, I won my first tournament today. Nothing major, just a small thing with like 12 people at my local Game Crazy. The best thing was that I beat my rival for the first time in tournament play, which felt good. I won Zelda: Twilight Princess, so all in all a good day I'd say.

Yeah, this ain't bad. It's kind of a compromise in a way. I mean, I don't think they want to have twenty sword-wielding playables, but this way some of the recent FE main characters (and others?) still get to make an appearance.

If Volke's in the game, he'll probably be a clone of Solid Snake. :( Then again, if they don't do clones this time around, they'll probably do assists in lieu of it.

I was hoping for better, but an assist isn't the worst thing to happen. I probably would have taken her as a replacement for Marth, but at least this way she's in the game. It's almost as if the assist is a lame consolation for not fully including the character.

I personally think that Ganondorf will return, based on TP Ganondorf designs. He will probably use his sword - and if they're smart, they'll make him completely different - give him his sword, etc. Just something to differentiate him completely from Capt. Falcon. If you want an example, try taking a look at how much of a leap Capt. Falcon made from SSB to SSBM. No one seemed to mind. :) And we all know how much ass would be kicked if he morphed into his boar/beast form for Final Smash, right?

I won't be fully satisfied with a fire-emblem character until I get to choose between four different weapons--each of which slowly breaks as I use it. Imagine if Marth's sword had actually broken at times in Smash and he suddenly had to fight more like one of the brawlers.

Well, if you can choose your character, then the Ancient Minister can be changed to a clone of Meta-Knight in Adventure Mode.

However, I think it unlikely that you'll be able to choose. You probably start as Kirby versus Petey Piranha, then change over to Pit after the stadium's engulfed in the bomb blast. And it just keeps going like that...

Yes, Oliver, I read the site and looked at the screenshots, but it was a little unclear because the platforms will still there when the ship was up close, and didn't know if it was like the F-Zero stage. Well, Octorok, your original post asked if you played on the ship (yes) and if the ship was in the background all the time (no).

If you want to ask a question, you are better off asking that question instead of two unrelated ones. Due to the post, I cannot give you a definitive answer, but every moving levels in SSBM had a sort of cycle, maybe this one does that too.

Link, Meta-Knight, Ike, Pit.

Then Marth or Roy if they return.

Then Ganon if they give him a new moveset based of WW/TP.

So yeah. Enough swordswingers. I'm glad she's not fully playable.

The swords of Meta-Knight and Pit are so freakin' short that they don't really count. As in they don't give a character ridiculous reach, which is undoubtedly what you (and I) find so cheap about sword users. The swords of Meta-Knight and Pit are so freakin' short that they don't really count. As in they don't give a character ridiculous reach, which is undoubtedly what you (and I) find so cheap about sword users. If Lyn and Ike had replaced Marth and Roy as I had hoped, there would have been two non-Link sword characters, just like last time. (Link is entitled.) Oh well.

Ditto that. Whether the swords are short or not doesn't matter, the fact is that they're swordies with the rest. To be honest, I'd rather see Ike replaced with Hector, simply because he's an axeman, not a swordsman.

Oh, that's what you meant. Well, you've definitely got a point there.

However, I think Hector is very, very unlikely. He would not only be powerful, but it's unlikely that he'd be slow like Bowser to compensate. And then he'd have the axe. He would be like Melee's Ganondorf with double the range. Waaay too cheap. (Hence why I don't want TP Swordslinger Ganondorf to show up.)

I don't think there will be a lot more options than those shown, but there's a decent number of combinations so there's not really a need for more options.

Sakurai's the man.

I was just thinking if homerun contest would be included again. I really hope so, but I also wish they give out rewards for doing it right. Get 500 feet with each character and get a bonus, get 1000 feet and get another bonus, etc. I liked Melee's HRC but it was a little shallow and nothing more than a small distraction for slow days. Addin value would make me want to play it more.

I had an idea of Mii as a Playable character. it would follow how skinny and tall you made him. heavier characters would be slower and more powerful and of course lighter Miis would be faster and weakers.

or

They Make a generic Body used my All Mii's like what they do for Wii sports and the only thing they would change would be the face which is the only important part.

other than that, the Gender plays an important role, one could set the generic female mii to be fast and light and the male generic body be heavier and more powerful.

Sorry for quoting this from like 10 pages back but I didn't get a chance to see this response. The best way to avoid someone that's trying to Crouch Cancel is to simply avoid it. I mean if you're going to attack someone and they are clearly crouching, chances are they are going to try to set you up in a counter and capitalize. So to minimize your chance of getting owned here is to chip away from afar (use of projectiles or with someone that has a lot of range in their attacks) or use aerials that allow you to pass through them quickly while dropping some damage. Considering these options is highly dependent on who you are and who you are fighting. So just use your head and figure out what's best.

DI is just using the control stick to influence the direction / momentum you are being thrown about. Most people only use the control stick, but those in the know use both the control stick and the C-stick. More specifically they use it for Smash DI. Basically it's a more effective DI with much more noticeable results. Basically you slam both sticks in the direction you want to DI on impact of an attack or throw. Timed wrong and you end up not getting awesome results.

Also the tip for Sheik about shieldgrabbing has a lot of risk involved in my opinion. Attempting to shieldgrab a Sheik that L-Cancels effectively and follows up with a quick attack like down smash within one or two frames after, you will be the one that will be getting capitalized on. Also with how fast Sheik's grab and how much range it has... attempting to shieldgrab might just get you grabbed first also. Granted all this stuff I'm saying is most of the stuff you'll experience against tournament level Sheik players and if you haven't been exposed to a real tournament, the subtleties I just mentioned aren't something you'll immediately think of. Sheik is a tough customer in a hands of a skilled player so I guess the most I can say about going up against skilled Sheiks is to bait and counter and be considerably careful not to get grabbed. Sheik's down throw sets easily sets up to tilt spams and eventually an up smash or forward air. Also be mindful of the needles that are stored up because even just one needle can throw off your groove and momentum. Heh, I recall one of my friends actually uses full charge air needles to force you to block, wavelands on the way down, then grabs. I'm pretty sure he's on the power rankings of California by now... Anyways, I guess that's all I've got to say about Sheik.

Oh I nearly forgot. If you're a Samus player, you can really screw over Sheiks if you kill their second jump and nail them with a down smash. Samus's down smash sweep turns people around... so if Sheik's back is to the stage and she's without a jump, the up B smoke won't be able to save her unless she can appear above the stage. She won't be able to grab edge!

Edit: Guys, if any of the advice and tips I'm giving out isn't as great as it could be, feel free to contribute and let me know. I hold my own against top state players (as far as I know, in California and Texas), but I've only been playing Smash for a little under two years so I'm sure there is a lot I still need to learn!

Another lesson from our Melee dictionary, GT, haha. Couldn't have described it better myself. I would add though that in order to survive killing attacks, you try to DI perpendicular to AND towards the direction that you are hit. So, if you get foward smashed off the stage, press up and toward the stage. That way, your foward momentum is halted and you move toward the top corner of the screen (a kind of safe haven from losing your stock.) I think the best way to do it is to press the c-stick toward the opponent and the joystick perpendicularly upward from your trajectory.

If any of that was wrong, feel free to correct me. That's what I remembef from Wak's "Advanced How to Play" guides and it's worked pretty well for me. DI'ing has really opened up new avenues for my gameplay. So has learning how to edge tech.

also, for shieks while they're obviously a broken breed (completely unfair for those who don't know the lingo) most shieks you play will be more offensive than they should be. very high level sheiks will not, but for anyone below that i think its safe to say that your best bet is to capitalize on that. if you play defensively, running off and pressuring with whatever long range stuff you might have, you can wait for a sheik to make a mistake and then react from there. its a bitch thing to do i know, but its worked well for me in my experience.

This is pretty much the entire summary of how to play Smash in a smart and competitive sense. Nothing to it really. It's all in the mind.

As for Peach, Peach's main strengths come from the air, mainly because of the mechanics of the float. They somehow thought it would be amazing just to give her the float cancel, which is an automatic L-Cancel immediately after a float... incredibly deadly as any float approach with her down air can lead directly into a down smash without any lag whatsoever. Peach's down smash has got to be the cheapest thing in the game. I'd rather fight Sheik than fight Peach. I mean, Peach doesn't die because she can float. She doesn't need to L-Cancel half her crap. She has that stupid down smash. And she gets to use "items" whenever she wants. ARGH. The only weakness I see in Peach is the fact that she has a slow jump. Falco Laser laser laser pew pew pew all day long from me :]

Broken
09-14-2007, 05:36 AM
Yeah, I guess if you can pull a perfect float cancel out whenever you do an aerial, then Peach would be pretty unstopable, and I'm sure there are some Peaches that can float cancel just about everything, but I'm certainly not at that level yet. Being good at Peach to me is 100% execution, 50% mindgames, if that makes any sense. I basically mean that you not only have to be solid on executing all of her little exploits and techniques to be good, but you have to put each one to use differently on each character. Peach has few or no garuanteed combos on anyone that I can think of. But she's amazingly unorthodx, which I love, and her recovery is superb when I employ good DI.

Thanks for the match up tips, ya'll. On Fast Fallers, I usually give them hell with chain grabing, d-smashing and edge gaurding, sheik and marth I have to play a little bit differently. I'm actually having the most trouble against low tier characters now (becuase I just don't play them enough.) Other floaties give me grief (zelda, wuigi, i.c.'s etc.)

Edit: and GT, the Downsmash is very punishable, as I'm sure you've figured out. Peach's upper body is basically a big knee or drill target if used at an improper time.

And damn Falco's lazers. Am I supposed to float over those things or something? argh, they're so spammable.

Obviously the down smash is punishable but I mean the risk is almost well worth it. The move lasts forever and it has a lot more range than it looks. As for the lasers, just gotta find an opportunity to get out of the way and float over. Also I don't know what you mean by "perfect float cancel." If you float, you automatically L-Cancel. There's not much to it.

You do L-cancel, but depending on when you drop from the float it depends on how much of the attack comes out. That can affect whether or not your opponent has time to sheild grab you sometimes. I basically mean that it's possible to mess up a FC, that's all.

None of the moves really lag at all except for forward air. I've tried it a lot before and that's the only time there should really be a problem. Only time I can see someone really messing this up is if you confuse float with the double jump cancel, which MUST be L-Cancelled. Also get on AIM LOL.

I had a feeling they'd return. Mostly due to the fact that they seem to be adding a lot of variety to how characters play. One of the quirkiest characters in Melee is the Ice Climbers pair, so it seemed natural that they'd be stickin' around. On another note... That fur looks great!

Huh... their mallets are on the ground in the last picture. Perhaps characters perform a celebration on the actual stage after a match in Brawl? Or maybe it's a character intro? Or single-player related?

Taunt is possible, but it would seem like it would take a bit long for them to drop and then re-pick up the mallets. Also, that looks like their taunt in the upper-left pic.

Huh... their mallets are on the ground in the last picture. Perhaps characters perform a celebration on the actual stage after a match in Brawl? Or maybe it's a character intro? Or single-player related?

Taunt is possible, but it would seem like it would take a bit long for them to drop and then re-pick up the mallets.
Final Smash, maybe?

They put down their hammers, do a traditional Climberian dance and summon a yeti?

To think about it, I probably used Ice Climbers more than anyone else because of the chaos they can wreak if they're separated (ironic I know, since they're mostly better when together).

But really, I wouldn't even blink if they decide to take out even my favorite characters for an entirely new cast. At least I hope they now plan on announcing only new characters.

I really hate to say it, (and I REALLY hope I'm wrong) but the roster is complete. We have 4 Veterans left: Capt. Falcon, Ness, Luigi, and Jigglypuff. And then there's Snake in the newbies. They're going to leave him for last I bet.

like i said, REALLY REALLY hope I'm wrong, but I'm going to just say I think that's it as far as the roster goes. That makes 24 Characters total (25 if you count Sheik). Not bad, but I'd really hope for Ganondorf to return...ESPECIALLY in TP style...

Since we're on the topic of the ICs, I'll ask a question. The members of SBR on Smashboards recently voted to un-ban wobbling in tournaments. What do you guys think of that? I think that it's fine to unban the technique, but I personally refuse to wobble. It's extremely anti-competitive, and it's also just a risky move in general. If you're lucky enough/skilled enough to get a grab in with the ICs (since everyone avoids it anyway), a chaingrab is probably better anyway.

Why is it assumed that the Ice Climbers level will scroll? As you can see, they've made all new levels for all characters so I don't personally see them remaking Icicle Mountain, at least not in a scrolling form.

I expect a new map based around the levels they had in their NES game, with a dinosaur flying around the top and sliding all over floors.

uuuh... I don't know which ice climbers you've played but the original is a vertical scrolling game. Of course, it didn't auto-scroll like in melee, but I'm expecting it to be much like melee's but with an end, like the new DK level. After all, the levels in IC han an ending and weren't infinite like in their melee iteration. Besides all levels in IC were the same so I don't think there's much option for other stuff...

Wobble, in the land of tournament play, is the IC infinite where Popo grabs you and hits alternate with Popo's head and Nana doing down tilt A at perfect intervals so that you can't escape unless they mess up or they decide to let you go which is most likely when they'll smash you after giving you enough damage to knock you out.

Could you provide a link to that thread, man? I'm assuming it's not front page on Smashboards right now because I didn't see it last time I checked.

I'm glad that the technique has been unbanned. I'll admit that I haven't had an expert perform it on me at a tourney yet (so, I'm not going to pretend like I know all about it,) but I believe that the community will now have a chance to really adapt to it. I mean, if more people have to figure out a way to deal with this, then hopefully they'll figure out a way to foil it.

And then I can copy them, yeah!

Like I say in the thread, I feel that anything that can be accomplished by wobbling can be accomplished by chain-throwing. Chain-throwing racks up damage way faster, so you don't have to worry about perfect timing. If you can wobble, go for it, but I prefer chain-throwing. When both are done right, it's pretty much the same outcome: cheap KO's :)

wobbling, eh? i dont think it should be banned. it may seem anti-competitive when people first start doing it, but in fact in the long run it contributes to the metagame. if wobbling becomes one of the normal things people have to deal with, then they will be forced to adapt, i.e. become more aware of situations that result in getting grabbed, and being able to see when the IC player is spotting for a grab.

people probably dont like the idea of people who aren't very good just learning how to wobble as a cheap way to become good, so i'll talk about that.

someone who just knows how to wobble and blatantly goes for grabs all the time will lose horribly to anyone just knows how to watch their opponent. a lot of intermediate/learning players might have trouble against someone who isn't good at all but just knows how to wobble, and they will call it cheap because they worked harder than their opponent, and they lose/go even. sounds reasonable, right? well, i'd say if you're in this situation then you're in LUCK. this grabs you by the balls and FORCES you to actually watch what your opponent is doing and think logically about how they're approaching, and how you can disrupt that, and that is one of the big things that most people just getting into competitive smash have a whole lot of trouble learning, because of lack of good competition (someone who can punish them for playing mindlessly and keep them on the right track).

no matter what skill you are, if you're getting beat by someone just because they wobble, then that just shows that you have room for improvement in avoiding grabs/playing smart in general, and playing against that person is a perfect opportunity to get better.

also whoa, jam stunna has an awesome sig for smashboards too?

Jam Stunna
09-15-2007, 12:07 PM
I agree with everything you said. Wobbling won't make someone who's horrible that much better, so there's nothing to worry about for most people. If you don't want to get wobbled, don't get grabbed. There are already characters where you want to avoid being grabbed at all costs (Sheik, Marth and Fox come to mind immediately), and anyone who knows ICs avoids being grabbed anyway. So not that much has changed really. I just personally find chain-grabbing easier than wobbling.

Haha, thanks for the sig love. Doulifee makes awesome sigs.

I'm not exactly delighted to see 'em again - little buggers were a bit annoying - but it's nice to know which Melee-ers to start training against, all the same.

You might as well go ahead and start training against Mr. Game & Watch too, because thanks to the method Sakurai's been using to number franchise icons on the website, he's now about 99% confirmed.

EDIT: On a completely unrelated topic, I hope they bring back the concept of Past Stages again. It's be nice to brawl on the Melee Corneria - assuming they don't update it somehow for Brawl or something. The only ship we have of Star Fox so far is the Pleiades.

God, yes. Though I'd prefer the original's Sector Z to any of the Melee Star Fox stages.

For that matter, they should include EVERY stage from the first two games in the third. That'd be an awesome bonus message: "You just unlocked every stage EVER!"

This came from Smashboards originally, for the record; I didn't come up with this on my own.

Go to Dojo and look at the filenames for any of the series icons used in the top left corner of each post; you'll notice they're numbered.

01 - Smash Bros.
02 - Donkey Kong
03 - Star Fox
04 - Kirby
05 - F-Zero
06 - Metroid
07 - Earthbound
08 - Pokémon
09 - Zelda
10 - Mario
11 - Yoshi
12 - Fire Emblem
13 - ???
14 - Ice Climber
15 - Animal Crossing
16 - Wario
17 - ???
18 - Kid Icarus

Now obviously, by looking at that list, you can tell that 2-11 are franchises that first made an appearance in the original game, while 12-14 are Melee originals, and 15 on are various series new in Brawl.

We can all be safe in guessing 17 is Metal Gear. But 13 has to be a franchise that first was used in Melee... and the only new characters from franchises not originally in the first game were Ice Climbers, Marth, Roy, and Mr. G&W. Since Fire Emblem and Ice Climber are already accounted for in the icon list, clearly Game and Watch has to be the missing franchise.

As long as we're putting forth possible Fox stages... I think it would be awesome to have a battleship from Sector Y, or maybe a couple of the sewage towers from Zoness. And the sewage could be something like Brinstar's lava, only it doesn't harm you - just bounces you according to your damage percentage. You know, sort of like it did in Star Fox 64.

Or - and I know this would be pretty damn difficult to do successfully - all four of the Star Fox Arwings or Star Wolf's Wolfens, flying en route to another mission, arranged like so --

EDIT: Sod. Posting won't let me use spaces... well, imagine it in roughly the formation of a diamond, or a square tipped onto one of its corners.

You know what type of a level we need to see pop up?

I know, maybe a little Game-and-Watchy with the lack of falling space. But it would be sweet, no?

Ah, the original Super Smash Bros.

It may even be a little hardcore.
Whoa, there! Are you sure you want to be making that kind of claim, Sakurai?

(What a weird sentence.)

Hmm... a super weapon!

The hammer will only be hardcore if it plays some kind of power metal rock opera during its operation. For real.

Stupid hammers... I have a friend that always kicks my ass in Melee, and every time he gets the hammer he yells "HAMMER TIME!" Pisses me off.

This hammer is HARDCORE.

It seems to me that the old hammer was plenty powerful -- I guess this will be good for long, horizontal levels, but it seems like a waste of an item slot.

Meh, its not like they are gonna run out if item slots.

Random Programmer: Err... Mr.Sakurai sir, you know that online gaming thing you wanted in, well, because of the hammer we don't have enough memory, so its either the hammer or online gaming, your call.

Sakurai: The hammer is HARDCORE.

Random Programmer: Okay, I'll go tell the online division they've been canned.

Way back in the thread, I think it was mentioned that Ganondorf is supposed to have his own moves.

I know but would be great to have also something similiar to the old Ganondorf :)

Worst update ever. I will go out of my way to turn this item off.

The regular hammer is stupidly overpowered.

If there's a way to only have broken and squeaky hammers on, I'll enable that out of spite.

It bares saying again.

"Squeaksqueaksqueaksqueak!"

I hate hammers, but that totally makes it worth it.

My opinion is that the Hammer itself is useless to me. It can make a match that's going so good to something that completely leaves you assfaced. Meh, I love the item control. Off all the way.
