If the combat in TP sucks, then the combat in every 3D Zelda sucks. That is, unless you got the Wii version. That's what she said.

TP had some pretty bad gameplay though (or, rather, mediocre gameplay with sub-par combat), so I think the story was a pretty big highlight. I mean, if the game had no story to look forward to, it's likely I would've stopped playing before the end. But since the story sucked too, I'm thankful for the nice atmosphere and music, and crazy characters.

.minor spoilers.

I whole-heartedly disagree with you. The combat in TP was was the most expanded upon that it has ever been in any Zelda series; there were far more techniques and moves that you could do in a battle, counters, and just a lot of moves in general. Especially when you compare it to earlier Zelda games. I kind of agree with you in terms of the story, not that is sucked, but that it was just same-old same-old. The first half of the game was really intriguing and interesting, but towards the latter half if it was collect 7 things to fight the last boss, like any old regular Zelda before it. I love the way the game was presented, but the game's atmosphere didn't draw me in like I was expecting it to, and maybe that's because I've been playing games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and Windwaker which really did suck me into the world the developers created. Phantom Hourglass on the DS even did a good job of this, although in a smaller scale. However, the dungeon level designs were interesting to me in this go around.

So anyway, yeah, combat in TP is way expanded upon the previous Zelda's. I mean, if you didn't unlock all of the combat techniques then I can maybe understand your reasoning, but anyone coming into Twilight Princess having played any other Zelda should know what to expect in terms of story and characters.

I do feel as if Twilight Princess needs to be the last traditional Zelda. After 20 years of Zelda I'm just now starting to get tired of the same old formulaic story structure.

and I loved WindWaker.

Several of Yoshi's tilts, smashes and aerials were improved either in range (longer tail) or power, but his B moves haven't changed much. Of course, his B^ now kind of stalls him in the air and you can use it multiple times, but his smash B is quicker as well. Can't double jump cancel.

I'm happy to hear that yoshi maybe has gotten some improvements, he wasn't that bad in melee, but he was definitely weaker than his 64 version. :S (And it didn't help much to be mocked by people for playing yoshi, even if I generally whipped the floor with them in an actual game).

Yoshi does have a pretty steep learning curve, and I don't feel that's going to change much with Brawl. Out of all the Melee characters, I had the hardest time playing with Yoshi. Kirby, for me, was second only because of how badly nerfed he was; with so many laggy and weak attacks, I'm very excited that they've once again buffed (puffed?) up Kirby's speed and power in Brawl. The new Yo-Yo Kirby dash attack certainly looks cool, too.

Oddly enough, i think the character with the fewest changes overall in the Demo was Donkey Kong, hands down. I'm fine with that, really, since he was exceptionally balanced in Melee, but with such a gimped Final Smash it would have been nice to find a few tweaks here and there. Ah! Well, actually, there was apparently one change to DK: when his smash B buries you underground, your opponent will become "dislodged" after just one hit instead of a set time period. Since they also seem to have lost the immunity to knockback while being buried as well, seems like smash B to Giant Punch would be a good idea for a basic setup.

Maybe so, but the enemies are slow, dumb, and weak compared to the likes of OOT, and not even comparable to any of the 2D Zelda games I've played. What's the point of doing fancy moves when you can kill any enemy just as quickly with the move that's simplest and easiest to do? Usually it's FASTER to kill enemies without using your special sword techniques, and much less risky too. And when the enemies are total pushovers, the only thing that matters in combat is speed - because I want to get the "fight" over with as fast a possible, because it's pointless and boring. I'll admit some of the more difficult enemies were fun, like those lovably frustrating ice-based enemies, but for the most part all the enemies were harmless victims. That icy dungeon really made me think "wow, I hope the rest of the game is this hard!", but from there it just got much easier...

And my "the story sucked" comment was based mostly on my expectations - I got my hopes up because of all the raving fanboys on this site, claiming "OMG it's the most epic Zelda story ever!!!", or "The story's not that great, but it's still the greatest Zelda story ever!!" Curse you, fanboys! Curse you, Sages! Curse you... Link!

And now, back to our regularly scheduled Brawl thread.

Sakurai is a master if he pulls this off... OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!

I'm going to have to put in some serious Melee practice when school is out.... now if they just have a way to get it permanent, that would be remarkable, but I'm sure we can get some blog online somewhere on how to design the levels. The MP3 idea is nice, but with all the game music they have and the excellent composers, that's not on my list of concerned things.

Now we can just hope it makes February. I guess Galaxy, Metroid, and Fire Emblem will be the flavor of the season for me, with Brawl up for next year. Oh and some multiplayer game... Wii is too much fun with multiplayer. :-)

Oh, Mother Snowman music confirmed! Um... is that from 1 2 or 3. If it's from 2 (Earthbound), it's probably from the boarding school. Anyone play 1 and/or 3 have any clue?

OH MAN!!!!

They just increased Brawl's lifespan well past Melee's.... at least 10 years. You can just make a stage.

I do wonder if the pieces that you use are enough to make unique stages though, the tool set looks interesting, but pretty limited imo. I wonder if there will be more pieces... looks to me, judging by that one pic there will be about 100 pieces you can use per level.

Interesting addition. Looking forward to it, I hope you can really customize it to give it a nice theme, besides just tile patterns and such.

Just buy a cheap one off of Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=1053107930&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=68&Tpk=SD+Card). A 2 gig stick is the max the Wii can take I believe.

I've recently been seeing advertisements for 2GB SD cards for $20 US. That should give you some idea of the cost. Considering that's 4x more storage space than the Wii has for half the cost of a controller, I'd say they're more than worth the investment.

Being able to play against others online, even if you don't know them unless you get their friend code (and honestly thats what the Internet is for.), being able to make gameplay videos as an in-game feature and share them, and now building your own stages. This is really shaping up to be a mini world-wide phenomenon isn't it? I mean if Melee could stay as fresh as long as it has imagine this.

Maybe it'll be a nice wakeup call to Nintendo not to scoff so much at online functions in their games. I think its the wave of the future, look at what it could do for Street Fighter IV.

where are the action-specific points, like Fighter Stance or Coward or Stale Moves or stuff?

Probably hidden.
Because in Brawl, CAPTAIN FALCON announces the action-specific points, adding "FARUKKON" before each.

Seriously though, it would be lulz if the final boss of single player classic as Snake was Ocelot's dismembered arm.

Huh. They are missing.

Well, at least now score will be a more accurate measurement of playing ability. Or rather, it'll be easier to rack up points, if that's your goal.

I'm sure they'll include a Bonus mode in Vs. or whatever, so it wouldn't be completely gone.

A theory: There are unlockables that require getting X number of points in a particular game mode. Since the bonus points made it difficult to predict how many points you'd actually get from any given fight, they got rid of them to focus, as you said, on playing ability.

custom stages are going to be very static, and there's an infinite number of those. to me, it seems like "the team" made a conscious decision to make all the new "official" stages dynamic to keep things from getting too stale.

Because Balloon Fight is a way better game than Punch-Out.

Also, if Balloon Fighter were playable, why would they put elements from his game on another character's stage? Unless the Balloon Fighter himself doesn't have a stage, which would be strange because any Balloon Fight stage would work as-is as a Smash stage.

I think the college scene will help do some viral marketing this time around. Just like they did for Halo, I know there's lot of college students who love Melee, and with the huge hype the game has already, and the competitive nature of the game, it should be the must-have figher of next year, if not the must-have traditional fighter.

And yes, it will sell TONS!

Anyway, I hope she's in Brawl. Or even better: a Balloon Kid level with remixes of all the Balloon Kid tracks!!

... =(
Stupid fish, dashing my hopes. The best thing I can hope for now is SOME of the Balloon Kid tracks remixed in the Ice Climbers stage.

And, anyone know any specifics about the water? Can you "meteor smash" characters down through water? Can you attack while swimming? Can you jump, double jump... infinite jump? Does it slow you down? Can you skip across the surface? Do you float? Does the lava in Norfair act like water? Can you make water in the stage editor? Do items float? Does rock Kirby float? What is he like? It's not important. Particle man. Is he a dot, or is he a speck? When he's underwater does he get wet? Or does the water get him instead? Nobody knows, particle man.

I'm going to assume that some of that was authentic question. I am also going to hope to God (and I'm agnostic!) that the kirby-rock question was for the sake of lyrics.

It looks like there will be free swimming at the surface of the water where if you spend too much time you will be dragged to the bottom by the Doom-Fish. It's hard to say if attacks will be available in the water, but if nothing else, you should be able to use your mid-air jump and recovery move to get out of the water and attack. Or maybe it's just a timing thing, like kirby's normal double-triple-quad jumps; awesomely useful, but limited.

Or, most likely of all, it is a hazard that compels your character to be a synchronized swimmer, where they will wait until an ice-climber uses side-special attack to fish the victim out and eat them as food.

I personally don't like Meta-Knight's FS -- I'd rather have a Shinkuu Hadoken kind of move that a Raging Demon...especially with a game as fast-paced as Smash.

Still glad to see that there's a lot of variety with it though; it makes the characters more unique.

If the fourth button on the screen for screen caps/custom stages is "Submit," and the screen looked pretty much the same for replay videos, does anyone else get the feeling Nintendo will be doing a similar "submit one/receive one daily" thing with the replay videos? Uhh...Farore's Wind? May not be as cool but makes more sense than his previous entry. Could also represent the warp song in Majora's Mask if there were feathers...

I think they are trying to make the entries more like the characters travel or warp into the battle rather than just appearing from nowhere with a cool move. It has a better effect and adds to the game too IMO.

Farore's Wind is green. Plus, he didn't have it in TP. If they are basing things off of TP, then that can't be it. AT LEAST let Midna warp him in as a wolf and then have him transform! Something... badass! A little more befitting of the character... and more importantly my main.

We know basically the full movesets for the 14 characters at E for All. However, I didn't see F.L.U.D.D. used, and Sakurai did allude to there being more moves / character this time around, so they could've disabled the *extra* moves.

But with all the control diagrams, etc. on the blog that seems less and less likely. But I wouldn't rule out some additional functionality in the moveset, just maybe not enough to allow Wolf Like w/o an additional character.

BTW did anyone see videos or play Mario to see when he uses the F.L.U.D.D. moves? I didn't see a single one.

It seems as though that's been taken by Pit. Regardless, the whirlwind is way better. It is reminiscent of a number of things from the Zelda universe (flute from original Zelda, Farore's wind, the Hyrule stage in the original Smash Bros., the golden frog tornado thing in Phantom Hourglass). What does the warp have going for it?

Also, since Ness had the coolest intro in the original Smash, it makes sense that they would bring it back. Given that Lucas has a different intro, I figure Ness has to be in the game with his original intro.

You can't aim it below horizontal, and the minimum knockback (uncharged) it does is like the effect of wind on dreamland64. Of course, Gimpy reminds us to not consider it final. I tried with my friends, but after the first fifteen lives we stopped caring and started goofing around instead of playing seriously. Yea I did it with friends. We were on Super Sudden Death though which was hilarious, but it probably doesn't count. I can't see how someone could sit through a whole normal melee with 99 lives.
