Edit: Just played with TheLeviathan. Fun times. He loves my Falco and Ice Climbers lol :)
Hey now, I won a game or two when you weren't one of your better characters (*cough* bowser and link). Ahem excuse me.
As for the screenshot, It would be kinda fun if there was an actual mode for that with all the retro sprites.
Or perhaps revamped sprites, such that the original sprite look is there, but the styles match up.
I second this motion.
Only make it 32-bit sprites, not 8-bit; otherwise it will be a little difficult to tell who is who.

Meh... what about 128 bit sprites? ;)

I am in favor of 16-bit sprites. The SNES's graphics always had this certain, almost surreal feel to them that I still love even now. My brother always comments "ugh, what bad graphics"; but I feel that the SNES has good graphics, while 2D. I am one of those people who believes that the Gameboy line should always remain 2D, because that is a style that nothing else can quite capture.
I don't know what 32-bit sprites were used on, so I cannot comment on that.

I agree. 32 bits sprites don't have the same feel as 16 bit sprites do. 8 bits are too simple, and 32 bits just look plastic and fake. 16 bit is perfect.

I can just see them making a 16-bit SSB for GBA. I'd play it.

It would giove me a reason to find my GBA and play it. (I haven't touched in since I finished ZOE: Fist of Mars about two years ago)

Ashnard from Fire Emblem seems to be a SSBB character. (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i121/monkeybob133/Ashnard.jpg)
The Nintendo fanbase never ceases to amaze me. 8O
Then again, it could just be a new Fire Emblem stage. :P

Then again, it could just be a new Fire Emblem stage. :P
Taken from Super Smash Brothers Arena (http://smashbros.planets.gamespy.com/game_ssbb_arenas.php#temple):
While this stage appears to be from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (with the Daein's crest (http://smashbros.planets.gamespy.com/ssbb/images/symbol_daein.gif)), it is not for at least two reasons: 1) the flags are not similar at all (except in color), and 2) Daein is located near snowlands whilst this stage appears to have a more temperate climate. However, it is possible that this stage is from a Fire Emblem game...just not Path of Radiance.
Thanks to Vincent (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/angelsword/) and Fryguy64 (http://nindb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/) for clearing some of the confusion.
I'd like to point out that I made BOTH of those observations as soon as the rumors started going out.

I was just watching a Zelda 3 run, and realized how unbelievably awesome it would be if they made one of the stages from the Dark World. The music arrangement would be to die for, I'd hope.

Smashbros.com has been updated with Snake's profile.
It's confirmed that he will, mainly use explosives.
I'm really stoked to see what Pit can do but this seems interesting as well.

The symbol on the flags is closer to the symbol in the FE game Marth is from.
My guess is that they remade the stage he was meant to have in Melee.
It makes sense to me because Marth is a fan favorite
and he did have a stage in melee, it just didn't make it to the final version.

If I never ever teach myself to use the R button, will I get my ass handed to me?
I can't beat the game on hard without using a continue, either.

You mean the shield right? If so, yeah, the shield is pretty important. The R button also allows you to do dodges. You should try fighting low level CPUs and work your way up to the highest ones, and multiple opponents.

Since the Wii will have online functionalities, do you guys think that extra stages, characters, or single player challenges will be downloadable features for Smash Bros. and other Wii games?

I can beat a single level 9 opponent 99% of the time. I get KO'd a few times, yes, but that's mostly because I turn off all the items. I can come out on top when facing three level 7 opponents in melee, but above that is pretty difficult. I just never ever ever block or dodge, and I want to figure it out.

Well, since the Wii wil probably feature online play, you should get used to the melee controls a lot. Keep blocking on your mind while playing and use it a lot. You'll soon figure out when to use it and when not to. It'll grow on you, and you'll find yourself blocking at the moments you consider crucial.
As for dodging, it's not necessary, but it opens a new set of combos for you. Useful when avoiding a grab. Roll behind your opponent and grab him yourself, slam him into the ground and combo into it.
If you keep remembering yourself to use blocking and dodging, you'll find yourself instinctivly using it, as you incorporate it into your gameplay. Add a bit of timed jumps and air dodges and your a master of evasion.
Oh, and I really hope they can take wavedashing out of Brawl. It'd ruin the online play... OMG SNAKING!

Mastering the block and dodge are key. If you don't block or dodge, you can't avoid getting pummeled and have to constantly be on the offensive to avoid damage. It becomes almost natural to block or dodge eventually. I can beat three level 9 opponents with a challenge, but human opponents, obviously, are less predictable and therefore more challenging.

Seriously? I hope they leave it in. Sure, it has its abuses, but it's also the only thing that makes some characters competitive (Luigi, Ice Climbers, etc.). But then again, with the unavoidable lag that the game will have online, maybe wavedashing might not be possible, or it'll be extremely difficult. That's one of the reasons why I'm not really excited to see Smash Bros. go online.

This is probably just the Square-Enix fan in me talking, but I'd like to see Sora make it into SSBB.
That would mean even more "Link vs Sora" threads over at Gamefags.
Sora's different special attacks would translate very nicely to SSB's controls, though, at least IMO.

King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country - 1994)
Lupus (Rare) (Jet Force Gemini - 1999)
The former I actually suggested in my broken Babelfish Japanese. The latter, however, I hadn't even thought of, but could prove to be very interesting. Didn't think Jet Force Gemini made that big a splash in Japan (or anywhere else, for that matter). Miyamoto wasn't a fan, anyway.

Actually, I've heard that the debuggers actually found it and left it in.
I see no real problem with it, to be honest. It's not like some n00b can pick it up and start doing it to ace a veteran, and even after practicing for a while, it still takes a long time to be able to do effectively.

I think it's when you air dodge towards the ground so that you hit it mid-dodge. It makes you character shift in the direction that you were dodging. I guess it's good to follow it up with...something. I never really used it. But then again, I'm not good enough to play in a real tournament.

I'm glad that not all characters will be returning. After all, there are some useless ones that no one really used, such as Pichu and Mr. Game & Watch.
I don't like that they're making the game "easier", though. To me, that translates to "dumbed down", which a lot of series, particularly Nintendo ones, seem to be doing. I'd rather keep it at least somewhat complex, so that it can be more than just a simple party game. I'm all for just having fun, but tournaments and such are good too.

I find the cut to be potentially disheartening. It could be any of our favorite characters. Though I think everyone can agree to give Pichu the boot.
Edit: As for wavedashing... wavedashing doesn't automatically make you good. For some characters, it's completely useless; for others it opens up many different ways of playing. If used correctly, wavedashing opens up different combo setups, counters, escapes, speed changes, mindgames, and edge guarding techniques. It becomes a whole new ball game. For advanced play like in actual hardcore tournaments it's almost a necessity. If you can't see how wavedashing can be helpful, I recommend checking it out to see how potentially deep the rabbit hole goes in Smash.

What if they made more characters that can transform like Zelda (this would make less clone characters)? Young Link could turn into Fierce Diety Link or one of the many other masks.
Another duo like the Ice Climbers could be made (Diddy and Dixie Kong immediately come to mind).
They could also give the clone characters different movesets, like having Fox fight like he did in Starfox Adventures, and Falco could keep his current moves.
Just a few ideas to throw out there into the giant SSBB speculation storm.

That's what they're doing with Zero Suit Samus, or at least what they've hinted at. It would be awesome, if not COMPLETELY imbalanced, if Ganondorf could turn into Ganon. Maybe for the special upgrade item.

Diddy/Dixie sounds fun to me. I'm kind of afraid because everyone seems to want Diddy Kong, but he'd totally suck as he is.

I agree that Game and Watch should stay. He wasn't a favorite of mine, but he's an interesting character nonetheless.
Anyway, I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I think it would be really cool to have the 4 main characters from the mystical ninja games. I know Konami probably has the rights to them, but it's possible I guess. Goemon could throw ryo and use his pipe, and the other characters could use their designated weapons. Goemon's super could be something involving Impact and Yae's could summon Koryuta (sp?) the dragon. Sasuke already has a nice Up B with his jetpack. Just a thought.

I don't know if anyone's said this, but I'd give my left but to see Geno (SMRPG) in the game. And he'd have the move where he throws a series of discs that can deal max damage if you press the button again at just the right moment.
Sticking to SMRPG, if Peach is included again, her "limit break" move should be "psycho bomb": she tosses a single bomb into the air and 20+ bombs rain back down on the enemies.
As far as "clones" go, characters like Fox and Falco should just exist as alternate costumes. And as long as Star Fox is the subject, another character they could add would be Wolf (alternate costume being Panther). Just what I would like to see.

Although the concept of having a playable ridley is cool, I'm not sure how well it will work out. Ridley is HUGE. Comparing it with the Samus model, Ridley is at least 5x the size of Samus. And shrinking him down is just an insult to the character. Bowser was able to be shrunk down slightly, without losing too much, but the endresult makes him a target in most battles. Nevermind the fact that he's insanely slow. Also, Ridley can fly, not just glide for a really long time, so they would have to take that ability away from him. I think Ridley as a boss would definitely be awesome, but as a playable character, not so much.

We don't need more pokemon or Krystal IMO :P. As much as I'd want Ridley (whatever form) to be in the game too, like people said before it's not likely for him to be a playable character cuz he's such a big character. My vote for a non-Nintendo character would definitely be Chrono or Simon Belmont (especially Chrono :P).
Lots of people have said this, but it'd be nice if they did something about all the clone characters. People have suggested this before, but I'd like it if Dr. Mario were just a costume option for Mario since they have the same moves but one throws pills instead of fireballs. I'd be for either taking out Young Link and replacing him with Windwaker Link (I wouldn't want 3 separate Links, especially since there are already enough Zelda characters), or make him more different from Link. I also would be in favor of getting rid of Pichu, and taking out either Marth or Roy in favor of Ike.
I'd kinda wanna see Paper Mario in there too, but I definitely won't be too disappointed if he doesn't make the cut (oh, I'm just so clever :P). Just like with Link, though, I wouldn't want 3 separate Marios...so I kinda hope they take out Dr. Mario or make him an alternate costume. Oh, and I'm sure if Nintendo really wants to plug their new IP, they'll be putting in a Project H.A.M.M.E.R. character as well :P. It might be kinda cool.
One of the Metroid Prime Hunters.
Baby Bowser maybe.
Eliwood/Ephraim/Eirika
Bad guy from Fire Emblem/Sacred Stones/Path of Radiance
Tingle (sorry, but the truth is this is very likely)
You want me to add that list, or it's updates to the front post arashi?

Many people have been mentioning Ridley. I know he'd be too big for a regular character, but perhaps he could show up as a boss (like Giga Bowser).

But why do they have to remove G&W? The li'l guy was rad. :(

He was small in the first game (about the size of Samus) if you didn't know. He was big in the GBA remake though. But yeah, he might be some kind of boss in the game.

Nope, its 100% bull. Reasons:
1. The translation claims to be via google translator, and attempts to imitate it through poor grammar. However, there are certain things that wouldn't show up in google translator, like the name the Japanese use for Smash Brothers would show up in katakana in slang saying "SumaBura" (Because Sumashu = Smash and Burathazu = Brothers, therefore SumaBura = Smash Bros). And thats just one reason of many others why the google translator wouldn't show anything NEAR the thing you posted.
2. I translate everything Sakurai says straight from the official website. I sincerely doubt he'd reveal that information to some news source outside of his own website.
Im sure there are more reasons, but 6 hours of class kinda takes the wind out of my sails.
EDIT: Ignore point #1, as the site translated was in French. All the more reason to not believe it (Sakurai speaks English, kinda, and Japanese...and translators can make mistakes :p). Oddly enough, I can also speak a little French, but not nearly enough to translate THAT monster.
When in doubt, trust the Panda.

I'm not sure what your reasoning is for wanting Pit to be the only oldschool character which didn't go into further generations; are you saying you'd just prefer to have more recently created/used characters in SSBB? The Ice Climbers weren't in anything else as I recall either, and a lot of people comment on liking them, so I don't know why you'd want one character being "representative of that period." Speaking of the Ice Climbers, there seems to be double talk going on. Some have been saying that whole thing is a rumor, others a lie, and other people have just been accepting it. So, which is it really? Is there actually reliable info on this??
EDIT: I guess we have the answer above huh?

I'd love to see Geno or Mallow enter the ring. I know these two were created by Square-Enix, but they were in a Mario game, so I think Nintendo holds the rights for them. :)
Also, I'd like to see Fawful (This battle will the the MUSTARD OF YOUR DOOM!). Hey, a guy can dream, right?
As for third part persons, I shall analyze them by company-
Sega
Home of Sonic the Hedgehog, one-time rival of Mario. The coolness factor alone makes a choice from this company popular amongst fanboys.
Odds: Pretty damn good for Sonic. Every one of his buddies (save Knuckles) doesn't have a chance.
Ubi Soft
Rayman is the most popular guy in this house, and probably the only one Nintendo would consider. However, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil would kick so much ass...
Odds: Rayman, with his status on the Wii, has a semi-good chance. Not as good as Sonic, but good. Jade would be considered a "dark horse".
EA
NONONONONO.
Odds: God help me, the first one of you to suggest "Harry Potter" gets to live with Jack Thompson.
Square-Enix
Final Fantasy is a juggernaut in the gaming world, but only FFs before 7 are included. Kingdom Hearts also has a chance (Chain of Memories!)
Odds: FF6 has the best shot of getting in this game, but SE can decide which one charcter for the game. Sora is the "dark horse" from this company.
Konami
They already got Snake in here. Who else is left?
Odds: If its Raiden, there will be hell to pay. Else, look at the Big Boss, Liquid, or Robo Ninja! SNAKE! FIRE THE STINGER!
Namco/Natsume (Combined for efficency)
Seeing as how Namco's pride and joy is the antithesis of SSB-style play (Tekken & Soul Calibur), they'd send in someone from Tales of Symphonia. Natsume could use Jack(The Player-Character) from the Harvest Moon series.
Odds: Both companies don't really have much of a chance here. Unless Harvest Moon starts selling like hotcakes....
Capcom
The house that Mega Man built. This company has THREE fanchises to choose from:
-Resident Evil (Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy)
-Viewtiful Joe (Joe)
-Mega Man (Mega Man, X, or Zero)
Odds: Capcom knows people will bitch if Mega Man.exe gets in, so its probably X or the original Mega Man.
Odds favor Sonic and Mega Man. No fan boy rants-please?

Well....you never know, Sonic just might make an appearance. All the big rage about rumors of Sonic being in SSBM made a big ruckus so Nintendo may have taken that into consideration. After all, Sonic does have a few games on GCN.
Other than that, some of my random guesses (that nobody mentioned already) would be: Birdo, Daisy, Waluigi, that Paulene bitch from Donkey Kong and maybe even Toad

Now that Ridley is semi-confirmed, there's no reason for people to bitch that certain types of characters won't be feasible.
Even with someone like Sonic, Sonic has plenty of melee moves as well in his own games. Also, his Sonic-spin move has been emulated by Kirby a long time ago anyway.

Yes Ganondorf is a clone of C. Falcon BUT Ganondorf is heavier and a tad slower, so the same moveset has been applied to a different character type. Its like giving a Fighter class the same spells as a Mage. The Fighter's stats are different, but his moves are the same, opening up a whole new strategy (*cough*Battlemage*cough*).
I see why they made them completely different characters, but it really isn;t necessary. A simple costume swap will do.

going from Black Advent's post on the previous page, I think Viewtiful Joe would be a prime candidate for other 3rd party... Way more than Megaman. I love Megaman just as much as the next guy but the little blue bomber gets way too much "Screen-time" as it were. Joe is perfect for SSBB and I think they would do well to add him in! Besides, saying "Henshin a go-go baby!" as a taunt would be AWESOME!

I don't know why everyone hates "clone" characters so much. Yes they have the same movesets, but in almost every case they're so different that they require completely different playing styles. You can't play with Gandondorf the same way that you play with C. Falcon and hope to win.

Okay, so I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing DS lately (yeah I know, I'm a fucking hypocrite), and I think the player's character (the human boy/girl) would be an interesting addition. Here are some ideas that I have for their moveset:
A MOVES
one-two punch (a): a basic two-punch combo. Can be chained with other moves. Nothing great.
push (forward a): an attack with longer reach. Unlike the pushing you do in AC, you just stand in one place and move the hands forward in a quick motion.
low kick (down a): nothing to explain here.
umbrella (up a): you twirl your umbrella and inflict some damage to a foe above you.
trip (dash a): you trip. A reference to Katrina's fortune.
(forward smash) axe: SWING IT FOOL!
(down smash) shovel: well, you dig. If a foe happens to be right in front of you, he gets flinged upwards. Me digging out a tree trunk made me realized the AC character's potential to be in Brawl.
(up smash) show it off!: pull an insect or fish out of your pocket and raise it up! The force you inflict depends on what kind of creature you pull out (e.g. Pulling out a shark has a stronger impact than pulling out a beetle.), so it's kinda random.
B MOVES
(b) Net: this attack doesn't knock people offstage, but it does inflict reasonable damage and sometimes gives enemies a "mood change." Sometimes they will get mad, making them unable to shield and hard to control, while in other times they will become sad (with a black cloud and all) which makes them unable to run and attack. The length of these "mood changes" depends on how much damage the enemies have. The chances of getting a mood change is random though. Still, imagining Snake getting hit with this attack is just hilarious.
(forward b) Furniture: You drop a furniture just like in AC. That "poof!" animation can send opponents flying. Just like the show-off move, the force and damage depends on what kind of furniture you pull out. You can only drop three furnitures at a time though. You can drop another one when the other furnitures disappear or gets destroyed.
(up b) Fishing rod: when the hook latches onto an enemy, you can control the direction you want to fling the enemy at. While in air, you can control the hook's direction (although limited). It works like Link's hook shot this way, and is pretty useful for recovery.
(down b) pitfall: I haven't thought much about this move yet, but the idea is you leave a crack discreetly on the ground. Enemies who step on it will fall and get stunned for a moment. You can fall on it too and deal some damage by 'struggling' to get out.
GRABS: No idea.
jumps: I'm imagining the character will have 3 jumps: 2 normal ones and then holds a balloon for the last one. It works like Yoshi's jump.
taunt: change accessory/outfit, maybe?
Aanyway, yeah. That's my idea. Maybe they thought of something like that too. But alas, I can only wish.
P.S. I want to punch the one who made the rumor in the balls!

Hey, what gives? They were supposed to update Smashbros.com like 20 minutes ago. They usually update it on the dot.
They could be done for now. After all, they've unveiled the five characters from the trailer, so they may be waiting for more universal info before updating again.
Also, I think Sonic is almost guaranteed. They may prove me wrong, but, somehow, I doubt it.
The other will probably be Megaman. If Capcom puts anyone in, it'll either be Megaman or Ryu from Street Fighter, most likely. Although, dark horse pick goes to Zero. He's got his own line of GBA games and alot of people like him. I, personally, would rather see Zero.
Namco seems unlikely, simply because of a lack of suitable characters. Lloyd or Cless are really the only ones that come to mind.
Square-Enix is the same way; Sora would seem to be the most likely, with Locke, Kefka, and Cecil as other possibilities. Highly unlikely possibilty goes to The Black Knight from Final Fantasy: CC.
EA...no. Just....NO.
They should remove Pichu, Dr. Mario, and Young Link.
My suggestions to for first-party characters are:
MARIO
Bowser, Jr.(with the paintbrush)
Geno
Diddy Kong
POKEMON
Deoxys(could change form depending on what special attacks you use)
Lucario
ZELDA
"Celda" Link
Vaati
F-ZERO
Samurai Goroh
METROID
Dark Samus
Weavel
GOLDEN SUN(pretty sure this a first party game)
Isaac/Felix
Jenna
FIRE EMBLEM
Never played any, but I imagine they'll add someone from Path of Radiance
That brings the total up to roughly 41 right there, not including the speculations.

I'm a bit curious though how Kalas got on the list but not Lloyd or Kratos. Oh well, whatever caught the man's fancy is on the list.
I say take out Roy or Marth and let Ike in the game. Ike was pretty cool and his sword would make things different.

@ Hector: Lloyd and Kratos are property of Namco, who, so far, we know nothing about. They have been good about making Nintendo games in the past, though - I believe they developed Custom Robo.

I dunno about you guys, but it seems rather off that they'd include Snake in the game being that his character seems way too mature for the theme of the game, however badass it would be.
Sheesh, is Path of Radiance the only FE game anybody here has played? Why not give some love to Sacred Stones and the original FE GBA? I would love to see Lyn on there (think Sheik...with a sword), and especially Hector (think Ganondorf...with an axe). Or how about Ephraim and Eirika from SS? It would be awesome to play with Ephraim's lance! The other interesting thing would be to have a high-level mage with little/no physical attacks (Pent Pent Pent Pent Pent :D). Agahnim: A mysterious sorcerer who arrived at the Hyrule Kingdom not long before the beginning of the game. Although his motives were at first unclear, he gained favorable reputation with the royal family by ridding them of a number of problems plaguing their kingdom using unknown magic. He later developed an interest in the wise men who sealed away the mythical Golden Land ages ago, and realized that once this land was found, he could have all of its power for himself. He then placed a spell on the knights of the land, putting them under his direct control, and ordered them to find the descendants of these sages of lore, not the least of which was Princess Zelda herself. After murdering her father, King Hyrule, Agahnim was about to send Zelda to the Dark World when Link intervened, and escaped to the other world himself.

The whole point of fighting games is to make people who would otherwise have no business dealing with each other duke it out.
When you think about it, Eliwood and Marth are more "mature" characters than say, Mario or Pikachu. It really doesn't matter that much; it's Super Smash Bros., they'll make it happen.

BTW, I just experienced a very unfortunate side-affect of a hiatus in SSBM-playing: loss of skill. I hate it when that happens; I used to be the best in my area, but now I can't even take on 2 lvl-9s teamed agaist me. (Against 3 lvl-9s FFA, I did ok though.)

Snake is in SSBB because ever since the near-completion of SSBM, Kojima has been bugging Nintendo to include Snake in Smash Bros. Ideally he would have showed up in SSBM but they were shaky on it and it was too far into production to really add him in. So this time around Kojima made sure Snake would get in. And with all the mad publicity Snake will bring, Nintendo would be suicidal not to add Snake when the guy who created him is pratically throwing the entire liscened character at your feet.

He doesn't really seem all that obvious to me. Sure, he's more popular than some of the suggestions I've been reading here and he's been in a few recent games on Nintendo systems, but he doesn't really have a past on a N system.
I'm not against him being added, just not all that crazy about it, I'm sure I can think of better char additions to the roster than him.
Also, I'd rather like to see more popular characters from more games rather than having a bunch from fewer. For example we really don't need three Links.

Yes we do. We need adult link, and kid link, and WW link, and we need all the '4-swords' links, and then we need a dark link, and then all the Majora's Mask Links, and then the LttP link (his charge attack would rule), and then like, the wolf link from TP, and then a Tingle-Link hybrid/lovechild, and then an X-men link, and then... Not to pile on here, but it shouldn't be that hard to adjust him to the gameplay style. You're right in not wanting the homing attack; that's not really something that would work well in SSBB. However, no one ever said he has to use that. Infact, here's how Sonic could work:
Up+B=Lightning Shield
From Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Pretty simple. Light to moderate damage on the strike. The sparks from the base of the attack would cause light damage.
B SMASH=Flame Shield
Damage would be similar to Falcon Kick. Works exactly like it does in Sonic 3.
Neutral B=Bubble Shield
Would work differently in the air. On the ground, use it as a brief shield to deflect projectiles. In the air, it would do the basketball bounce, a la Sonic 3. Damage similar to Donkey Kong's ground slap. Of course, in the event that you use it off the edge, he wouldn't just keep falling. It'll stop after a bit and allow you to recover.
Down+B=Spin Dash
Would work just as it does in the games. Hold Down after executing attack to hold it in place. Tap B repeatedly to power it up, release Down to attack. It's effect would be similar to Marth's Shield Breaker(whereas Jigglypuff's Rollout is like Roy's Flare Blade).
See? Easy. He'd probably be similar to Shiek and Marth; fast, agile jugglers. He would be somewhat weak overall, lacking in a truly powerful finisher, and would be fairly light. His Super could turn him into Super(or Hyper) Sonic. It would last as long as a Super Star, strengthening all of his attacks. He might take damage as it's in effect, though(it's draining his rings, afterall).
I'd actually like to see him with this moveset. It'd be pretty cool, IMO.
Bottomline: Look what they did for characters like Fox and Captain Falcon. Sonic would be a breeze compared to those two.

And for those who'll go "But but CE, Snake doesnt fit in either :S:S:S" I'll just say that he does. He does because his sense of humor fits Nintendo perfectly. His games have just the right ammount of wackyness and serious buisness, and he's even more out of place then Sonic, which makes him extra funny.

Also, for the record, while I like Sonic overall(mostly the older games, mind you), I'm by no means a Sonic fanboy. Tails definately shouldn't be in it(I'd pick Knuckles before Tails anyway).
I think that if they're gonna put 3rd party characters in it, it should be 1 character per company. Snake/Konami. Sonic/Sega. They're just special cameos. They don't need to overload the game with Sega or Konami characters.
Of course, I've never played the Castlevania series. I imagine my opinion might change if I do. :P

Haha, It took me a while to figure out why C. Falcon would never streak with the bat until I realized that the streak only happened if you continued to hold the A button, making him pull the bat back and streaking the character.
I have always loved Sheik's streak the best, just knock the character straight up.

So after playing a few Super Sudden Death matches I started thinking of new bonuses that could be earned in Brawl:
Bunker Buster: Broke an enemy's shield with an explosive (8000 points)
Drill Bit: Caused 100% or more damage with the Screw Attack (5000 points)
Clumsy KO: KO'd an enemy by dropping an item onto them (10000 points)
Pokemon Thief: Caught a pokeball thrown at you (1000 points)
...this is just a start but if anyone has anything to add to the list that they think should be bonuses go right ahead :D

I'm already good and stoked about this game. Not really caring who else gets in (but I'd love to see Ridley from the Nintendo side), but, I have just one thing to say.
If Konami gets anybody else in, it's probably not going to be another Metal Gear character. Like some of you say, I'm expecting a Castlevania presense if this happens. And if this happens, I'd be rooting for Sonia Belmont, Nathan Graves, or the one-and-only Alucard. And I'd want Sonia because, let's face it, we need another chick that can kick ass.
Namco getting in will probably get us some Tales action going on, and I'm seeing either Lloyd or Zelos, if this occurs.

I don't care about his storyline or any of that, Zelos was ANNOYING. Besides the fact that it is unlikely to see ANY character from ToS in SSBB, I would think the two most likely candidates would be Lloyd and Colette (and yes, I do believe that Colette would be an interesting character). Well, to each his own. I, for one, found characters like Zelos, Sheena, and Raine to be much more interesting than the main characters like Lloyd, Kratos, Genis, and Colette. But that's my opinion. I also liked Irvine from FFVIII and Zidane from FFIX. I seem to be in the minority when it comes to liking those kind of characters.
I'm a little surprised that no one else has suggested Cress from ToP, though.
Of course, you're right; it's unlikely any Tales character will be in the game. So all of this is probably pointless speculation anyway. :P

...and to fix certain characters' use of the home-run bat. IT'S NOT A FRIGGING SWORD, DON'T STAB WITH IT.
A bat or club actually works better in a jabbing motion if used in a fight, since it is way more time-consuming and way less acccurate to swing. :)
Anyway...Lloyd would be pretty cool. But if from Namco, Kalas would be cool to see too (I know speculation of him being in the game has been brought up before). Just outta curiousity, how many people here played Tales of Symphonia compared to Baten Kaitos? It seems like either more people played ToS, or people just didn't care for Baten Kaitos :P.

I'm not saying that Zelos' story isn't interesting, or that he doesn't add to the game. I simply found his manerisms, outfit, habits, etc. extremely annoying. Also his voice, but most characters in that game had annoying voices.
I haven't yet had the pleasure to play Phantasia. Was it as good as Symphonia?

Let me put it to you this way... both games take place in the same "world" so to speak. In that sense, if you're big on story and character developement, then they're similar. Battle-wise, they're nothing alike. And granted, we're talking about comparing a SNES/GBA/PSOne game to a GCN game, so there's the technical/space issue.
Phantasia is an old game, and it plays like an old game - there's no getting around that. It's still one of the better RPGs of it's day.
...anyway. If any Tales character shows up, it'd almost have to be from either Phantasia or Symphonia. Tempest won't be out yet, and the others never graced a Nintendo system. That said, yes, the main characters (ie. Lloyd, Cress) would be most likely. Lloyd even weilds dual swords, kinda like Pit.
Still... Symphonia's character developement was so good (for a game) that I'd say any of those 8 characters would fit superbly. I've beat the game a total of 5 times, and remember, this is about a 60-100 hour game. Personally, it'd be near impossible to say any of them would be clearly "better" in Smash. Presea (huge ax), Colette (chakram), Lloyd (dual sword) and Regal (kicks/kamehameha) all represent fighting styles that are otherwise abscent in Smash, so I'd say, from a gameplay standpoint they'd add the most to the experience.
Even I think Zelos is the best character in TOS, but with all the swords being swung already, he'd just get crowded out. At least Lloyd dual wields swords. That presents something a little different.

I was about to say that it would be hard to include Lloyd because his two swords would make wielding a beam sword pointless or awkward, and then I realized: what is Pit gonna do with a beam sword?
And I never thought I'd hear myself say this... but please, no more swordsmen in Smash Bros.
Now lancers, on the other hand... I'm rooting for Kain Highwind.

Zelos
YES
Zelos gets knocked so much in favor of Kratos. But I actually liked Zelos more than Kratos, and his affection storyline and events are much more interesting.
But if it's anyone, it'll probably be Lloyd. Or Cress from Phantasia.

I'll tell you right now, that picture made my day, and I've only been awake five minutes.
Listen, all this speculation is nice, and I couldn't agree more on how pleasant these concepts are. But even still.
When ToS was released in Japan, it was a pretty big deal. There was even a specialized gamecube released alongside of the game. Though my point seems to contradict itself when you consider that a PS2 version was released later on over there.
If the chances of Nintendo going to a third party depend on the weight of their collaboration, this idea might actually stand a chance. The same could be said of Capcom too, considering how they've worked on a few Zelda games. Otherwise, I'm not even sure if any of the execs have been alerted specifically to this possibility. It may even be that we feel an attachment to this game that the Japanese don't overall.
In the end it only matters how they feel, since they're the one's creating the game over there. We only (almost always) get nothing more than a translated copy of what they end up with. It's just the bare bones of the truth. Why do you think that their Japanese SSBB site ended up with a "send in character ideas poll" that wasn't present on any other site?

Most likely, they'll put in another MGS character for event purposes with Snake, and add a Castlevania one. And that'll be it for third party. I could go off speculating like hell on how they'd add Crash Bandicoot and Lara Croft, but it most likely won't happen, so I just keep expectations low.
All I'm really hoping from this game is an expansion pack of Melee, with more maps, characters and items and the added online. Nothing much, Melee can't really evolve anymore.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. I think it would be too much of a risk to try to change things up too much. Why fix what's not broken?
Which is funny, because that kind of mentality is exactly what Nintendo is opposing with the Wii. Still, though, I say let the others games be "revolutionary". Don't screw around with SSB.

Firstly, I agree in concept, but look at the changes between SSB and SSBM: a lot of cosmetic upgrades (duh, better graphics card), more characters, items, & stages, but also a lot of new ways to play - 3 different 1-player modes, event matches, multi-man melee, home-run derby, trophies, and all the special melee modes. IMO, THAT was part of what made SSBM so great; that, and also if you had played SSB, it was kind of like Othello ("A minute to learn, a lifetime to master") in that, you could pick up a controller and just start playing with ease, but it still took forever to get really good at it.
I'm not saying reinvent the game here; I want to be able to plug in my Gamecube controller and start playing well with my best character as soon as I get the game. On the other hand though, I'm not buying SSB for my N64 because I have SSBM; I want SSBB to make SSBM obsolete like that.

But the differences between Melee and the original aren't that big. While they added another B move and more modes, they didn't change the original concept by making it more air based, easier or slower. Melee is, in a way, and expansion of the original. And, in the same way, I want Brawl to be an expansion of Melee. Add more gameplay modes, more characters, stages and items. Add online and more customizable options. But don't make it easier or simpler. Leave the core gameplay, like Melee did with the original, and build on it.

Maybe I'm just being closed minded, but how pray-tell would something like that work in a game like smash? Even with two characters it just doesn't seem to suit the way the game is played very well at all.

Full customization is the one thing I'd really like to see here. I mean, make player one have 4 lives, but the first 2 be played with fox and when he loses them, turn to link, which is 1.5 times bigger then the other characters, but is also weaker and if they both get down to 1 life, change the level from brinstar to brinstar dephts. You know, be able to actually create your own game modes.

Also, I (and a bunch of my friends) want to see more customizable characters. Some of my friends have suggested something akin to CAW mode from the WWE games, but that seems to go against what Nintendo wants for this game. I personally want to see something like in Soul Calibur II, where you can unlock more weapons and outfits (maybe even the custom outfit idea from SC3?), but their attacks remain essentially the same, save for power, smash strength, etc.
Lastly, I demand that their costumes be more than stupid recolors. Except for a few of the characters in SSBM (Peach: in one of her costumes, her hair is reddish-brown, and she wears Daisy's outfit; Ice Climbers: in costumes 3 & 4, Nana's in front; Pikachu, Pichu, & Jigglypuff: accessories... because they're naked without them), everyone's "costumes" were just recolorations of their original outfit.

This is exactly why I know that I'm going to be disappointed with Brawl; there is no way they could add in everything that I want them to do. You've taken my customization idea to the extreme, but the basics are the same. No more modes; just let us change the starting damage, gravity, ground friction, speed, etc. manually. I want my Giant Invisible Metal Lightning Melee on double damage ratio with all bunny hoods and giant mushrooms! OK, well, I got carried away, but you get the picture.
They also need to allow you to change the percentage at which each individual item shows up. Ex: you have bombs and green shells on, and you want bombs to show up in only one out of every hundred items. They could even customize it down to how often individual Pokemon came out of the Pokeball.
And an underwater level please.
And fun rules, like Capture the Flag and such.
And I know there's more that I've thought of, but I can't remember it now.

Yeah, more costumes, especially for Wario. I want classic Wario, not the WarioWare version.
And I've said before, make Fox and Falco into ONE character, just alternate costumes.

There are a couple of flaws with this idea. While they have nearly identical movesets, Falco is actually stronger than Fox, while not being as fast as Fox. Not to mention the fact that Falco is his own entity with his own history.
Kinda like how you can't have Samus and Zero Suit Samus be alternate costumes, or all the Links be alternate costumes. While they're basically the same characters, they're not. All because they are so alike, yet so different.
You can do it with Peach and Daisy, because from what I've seen, they are nearly identical physically. Fox and Falco are not, and all the Links are not, and Samus and Zero Suit Samus are not.

QFE. Even the different history and such aside, some "clone" characters have a totaly different playstyle because they handle completely differently, and their attacks act differently as well, or there's a different optimum point for max damage. I think the only "clone" in melee I don't like is Dr. Mario because there seems to be no difference huge enough to make the playstyle any different between mario and dr mario.

I think that's the only difference between Mario and Dr. Mario. But, if you think about it, that's also what sets the two apart. While they are basically the same character, Dr. Mario deserves to be a character in his own right. So what if they play the same. The good doctor is a completely different character from your normal, every day, garden-variety Mario. It gives you a choice.
MasterRaichu
06-15-2006, 04:03 PM
Dr. Mario is in reality WAAAAY different from Mario. The pills are probably one of the major differences, mostly because of their knockback on contact with your opponent. But there are others.
Dr. Mario is actually slightly slower (almost unnoticible, but does affect his gameplay). He's got a stronger side-smash attack than Mario, but it's got shorter range. His up-Smash attack actually has the ability to bounce an opponent off the floor if caught in the correct frame, which can set up for combos. Mario doesn't have that ability with his up-smash. Dr. Mario's aerial attacks are also way stronger, most notably his back-kick. However, his punch does not cause a meteor attack, but Mario's does. Lets' also not forget about his down-tilt, which scoops the opponent up and flings them backwards and downwards, which is great for getting people off the edge. Mario's down tilt serves more as a means to lift an opponent into the air slightly to set up for a combo.
As for special moves, Dr. Mario's cape actually gives less lift when used in the air. It's not good for recovering to the edge, but his cyclone (down+B) is very good (for those that don't know, when using either Mario, you can start the cyclone, and consistently tap B to lift into the air... Doc does it better).
Those are all the differences i can think of. It's mostly suttle things, but they all add up to create a totally different player. Doc is far from useless, and most tournament players consider him to be on a higher tier than Mario himself. The entire purpose of clone characters was to give similar, but different gameplay experience to vary up the gameplay. That's pretty much why you couldn't combine Fox and Falco, I would get into all the little differences there but i dont' really have time.
All of the clone characters with similar themes could be combined as that only affects tournament play, which is a small minority of buyers. Plus, the game will be overhauled in Brawl, forcing tournament players to relearn it anyway, so Dr.Mario and Mario could be combined, as could Picachu and Pichu, Link and Young Link, Marth and Roy, and, to a certain extent, Fox and Falco. Only Ganondorf and Cpt.Falcon, being from two different games, would have a hard time being combined.
Also, welcome MasterRaichu!

Only Ganondorf and Cpt.Falcon, being from two different games, would have a hard time being combined.
Also, welcome MasterRaichu!
Technically, Marth & Roy are from different games, too. Games with a similar name? Yes - but still separate.
Besides, there are so many other fighters out there that already use the "change outfit = change effect" thing. It's so... played out. Costumes ought just to be costumes. You have to ask yourself, what are we really trying to do by combining like characters? Freeing up space on the character selsect screen? DUDE. Have you ever played Marvel VS Capcom 2? lol Who cares? As any EXPERIENCED player knows, there are lots of small differences in the "clones" that add up to make them worthy of having separate playstyles.
However. We KNOW some of the characters are getting the ax this time around. Obviously it makes more sense to get rid of one of the Links or Pichu than to get rid of Roy, Gannondorf or even a more "original" character like Ice Climbers. If Dr. Mario and Pichu don't show up in Brawl, I don't think too many people will refuse to buy it :?
Well, maybe not on the Marth and Roy issue (although, they could be set apart and replaced by Eliwood), but you can just set the clones on to the different costumes. As someone already said here, mario's costume would be the regular ones, plus and extras Dr.Mario one.

By how much did we multiply the media size from GC to Wii?
4 times, 5 times?
Assuming they double the graphic quality, they can still include twice as many characters and stages...
I don't think they would cut any characters.

Closer to 6 times, since the GC disc capacity was about 1.5gb and dual layer dvds hold 8.5gb.
I agree there's no technical reason to drop characters, stages, etc but there should be more of a limit on characters IMO. I'd love to see a bunch of new characters in the game, but at the same time I don't want too many characters, so for that reason I think it'd be alright if they dropped a few current characters in favor of new blood. Of course, if they added a bunch of new characters without dropping anyone, I wouldn't complain too loudly either :P.

Dammit I want Toad, and Mouser. (Mario 2 fan here)
Mouser X

You called? Oddly enough though, no, that's not where my name originated from. Though I agree, cool character. If they have Snake using explosives in SSBB, I don't see why Mouser couldn't be in there as well. That's certainly something I wouldn't mind seeing. Though, chances are that I'd never play as him. I'd end up blowing myself up too often. I already blow myself up when I'm playing Link. I have often pulled a bomb out by accident, and not realized it until it was to late... That should make it obvious that I don't play SSBM for tournament play. I play for fun (most of the time). Mouser X out.

Oh hell no, The clones, although fighting styles were somewhat similar, (except for [Dr.] Mario) all had to change their playing style a LOT to make up for differences in gameplay.
Roy is so much slower than Marth that his smash forward running slash becomes practically useless. His Down-A arial is also practically useless, so no spiking for Roy. However, he's much better at edge-guarding due to his flare blade, which easily could mean the difference between a win and a loss. Roy is also much better at accumulating damage because his opponents don't go flying too far with most of his attacks.
Ganondorf and Captain Falcon... if you don't see the dissimilarities, it's pointless to be reading this.
Link and Young link - Link has much stronger sword attacks and his boomerang is a nice punch to send the enemy flying. Young Link has better bombs and arrows though, making him a little better at slow, medium ranged combat. His boomerang also has a much wider attack range, so it's better for close range than Link's.
Pikachu and Pichu are another great example of this. Pichu's a forward smash is ridiculously short ranged, also causing ridiculous damage. Pichu's is more similar to Mario's smash, a long range (for a melee attack) burst of electricity. Pikachu is much heavier and overall has better range, but lacks Pichu's damaging ability. Pikachu tends to be better at flying ninja attacks than Pichu because of this - He slightly outranges his enemy and hits first.
So as you can see, clone characters ARE clones, but not close enough to force the same playing style on both clones. With the exception of (Dr.) Mario, clones ARE like identical twins, they appear the same at first glance (or second... or third...), but differences can be found if they are looked for.
Keep an open mind and this kind of game is extremely strategic. Just ask Smasha about it (If he's still around anyway).
You didn't get me. I didn't say they didn't have completly different fighting styles, but, from they flavour itself, the characters could be removed and be incorporated into their original forms as costumes. These costumes would retain the original abilities of the clones.
So while the clones have an adimitidally different fighting style, this is not important enough to guarantee their presence in SSBB.
So while the attacks are different, this won't really matter in Brawl since the mechanics will be redone anyway.

That'd be crazy to run outta time on that. Admittedly I'm not good at that stage (I get an average of 3 trophies), but I couldn't imagine using the time limit juggling those trophies without missing any :P.

It bugs me when people say to combine the clones into one character. :p
Using the logic they usually give, Ryu and Ken from SF should be combined into one.

If the purpose was to streamline the game, then yes, they could be combined into one character slot, and when you pressed a button, they'd change to the other, each with their individual techniques.

Ok, why not put all the characters under one slot, and cycle through them.
Or an even better idea: you put them on a page with an icon representing them, and by using the joystick, you select your character. You could even make it so that you have many characters on one sheet.

Not a bad idea. Except...

Again, why have Dr.Mario and Mario when you could just select Mario, press Y and there's Dr.Mario, with all the pros and cons.

"So, is Marth a Roy clone, or a Link clone again?"
And don't forget random selection.

Roy would be the clone from Marth. But this is meaningless, it would only matter if the game was being developed for the DS where they'd have limited space. With the Wii disks being able to store more info, there's no need to streamline the character seleccion menu.
I don't like cluttered menus though :?

Yeah, it's just a hopeless dream. I've been wanting Mario 2 characters forever. I'd shit my pants if I saw Mouser, Wart, or any or Mario 2 character as a playable character in Smash Brothers. Hell, I'd be happy with Shyguy (but we know that Mouser is da man). But, yeah, definitely won't see mouser. I've never seen him use anything but bombs anyway, but I just can't get over a rodent who wears Nascar sunglasses.

Just checked engadget.com, it lists a possible rumour that Ubisoft characters could possibly in the mix.
The Characters in the article possible,
Jade (!)-Beyond Good and Evil
Sam Fisher-Splinter Cell
Rayman-needs no intro.
The Prince-Prince of Persia

The thought of playing as Jade in a new game is too good for me. Maybe Ancel will finish the games supposed trilogy... here's to blind hope.

The idea of combineing "clone" characters annoys me. Who cares about "streamlineing" the fun thing about smash is the variety of characters you can use, and it kind of takes away from that to just make them into a costume. Also the fact that each of the clones DO have different movesets and playstyles.
While we're saying combine all the clone characters would you then suggest to make luigi nothing more than a costume for mario? They are essentualy "clones" of one another, but I think alot of people would be very unhappy if mario and luigi were just the difference of costumes.

The discussion is over. If Nintendo would streamline it, characters would be combined. If they don't, they won't. Simple as that.

Soul Calibur III did it and I loved it. Custom characters are really only about 45 or so movesets (with about 7 for each character type) so the only true difference IS their costume. Still is damn fun.
EDIT- I take back this post. After realizing that the Great Sword, Nightmare, and Siegfreid are all clones of each other with subtle changes in the moves. Same goes for other disciplines as well. Sorry.
SC3 still kicks ass tho.
I'm just bumping this so it doesn't... die or anything. Without new SSBB news, the topic's grown pretty stale. Still, let's try to keep this thread around until the actual launch of the game, so we can look back on our days of not knowing anything about Brawl with a tear in our eyes.
So, uh, share the usual Super Smash Bros. experiences here. Stories, gameplay modes, funny anecdotes or surprising achievements or how to hit the homerun bag just right with the one character.
Just so you guys know, the news about Baby Bowser, Ridley and WW Link being in was fake, which also means that Mr. G&W, Ice Climbers and Young Link are not necessarily out. We don't know anything about any potential characters except those that were announced in the trailer.

I went to a tournament a couple of weeks ago. There were a few well-known smashers there (PC Chris, UnknownForce, Krazy Jones and Korean DJ), and overall it was alot of fun.I didn't play nearly as well as I would have liked to. In fact, I went two and out (the tourney was double elimination). I played as Roy most of the time, and I only won one match when I switched to Jigglypuff (the victory came against a Falco on Final Destination). Basically, I choked. The first match I lost was against a person who's handle was V (my handle was Jam Stunna). I'd faced him in the tourney before this one, and beat him, when he used Fox and I had Roy. So this time was a rematch, and he beat me soundly. I didn't N-air a single time when I faced him this time, and I paid the price. Next, I faced a player named shmenkledorf. His Falco beat my Roy, my Jiggs beat his Falco, and his Marth owned my Jiggs. And that fast, I was out of the tourney. I didn't play the way I practiced, and I didn't stick to my gameplan, so I lost horribly. I'm mostly dissapointed because I did worse at this, my third tourney, than I did in my second one (I had four victories in the losers bracket before getting eliminated by UnknownForce at that one). Oh well, there's always next time.

I would like to nominate Jill from Drill Dozer for SSBB status. Although something tells me she's already a shoe-in, considering all the NINTENDO logos in the game's 4th area.
