But even without this mode, given the proliferation of the Internet these days, the existence of hidden characters is going to get exposed anyway.

So, this time I’m moving in the direction of not being too hung up on hidden characters.

Yeah, I'm just a bit worried about this now. Assuming all the hidden characters don't get revealed on the site, does anyone know where one would be able to locate information stating methods to unlock things, but not what GETS unlocked? To me, a large part of the value of such a game lies in the surprise of findinging new things. Admittedly, I'm going to try to stay away from certain websites when these things start leaking, but like I asked, does anyone know of a "safe" site or something? Or if there is someone, somewhere, who would compile such information and post it, without revealing what gets unlocked?

On the Penny-Arcade forums, they're planning to make just such a list, so that people can find all the methods of unlocking without finding out WHO they're unlocking. Just a heads up.

So I was just lying down to go to sleep when something popped into my head. Read this line again:

"You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players."

Okay, so you cast your vote for the stage you want and of the four people playing, it randomly chooses one of those stages. Sounds fair enough. But what was really interesting was the line that immediately follows:

"Also, the items that are turned off in the item switch are also determined by lottery."

At first I read this as, "Items will be picked randomly by the computer," however, when taken into context with the phrase just before it, it seems we may be able to vote for which items we want in the match, and the computer will pick from everyone's preferred selections.

Maybe I'm just lagging behind and everyone's already come to this conclusion, but I thought I should say something lest there be others like me that were a little slow on the uptake with this. If it does play out in this manner it would mean, if all players involved enjoyed playing with no items on, the chances of no items appearing during the match would be 100%. If this is the case, I'll actually be a little bit more content about this mode (though I'm still not terribly impressed). It'll be interesting to see what kinds of item combinations this will result in.

I think it's interesting how we all played Melee and loved it, even though it had no online play.

Now we're all angry because we don't like the way Nintendo is going to handle the online mode of what will be an otherwise amazing game? Come on, guys, I love Nintendo, but online gaming is not their forte. I honestly think they've come a long way in even implementing the features they have. Sure, I'd like a ranking system as much as the next guy, but it's not as though I really expected it from Nintendo. I would buy Brawl and probably love it just as much if it had no online capability at all.

Anyway, I'm not trying to start any heated discussion. Just sayin'.

Does it look to anyone else like there are very... few characters and stages to choose from? I'm hoping he's taking screenshots of the beta version they had playable last month just to keep from revealing anything...

EDIT: Yeah, theory proven. There are only 14 playable characters onscreen in that screenshot, but there have been 23 revealed. Let's hope the stage select is a similar case (which it has to be, Hyrule Temple isn't in that screenshot).

Here's an idea:

DON'T PLAY ONLINE.

You don't have to, no one's making you play online, and in fact, I'm pretty sure I don't want to play against you online, because you seem like a jerk.

Yeah from what it looks like, this online mode will be teh uber sux. Sure it will let you play online, against people who will look pretty much like they're cpu anyways. No leaderboards or rankings, so you might end up playing against a bunch of noobs instead of people of your own level, or viceversa.

Nintendo needs to understand that we want OPTIONS and we want a complete online package, not a gimped piece of crap. If you want people to play anonimously like this, allow them, but also allow the players who want to, to see each other, interact etc, and allow for rankings. Sure, rankings can be haxored by sneaky players but it will give you a good idea overall about who you want to play against.

And RD, I guess that in your eyes we can't ask for a better product and services from nintendo without being a jerk? when everyone is offering a much better online experience you will want to have the same from all companies, they're way behind the bar, and "ZOMG DON'T PLAY ONLINE GTFO PLZKTHNX NINTENDO FTW ROFL!1!11!" won't justify that.

"Wow.

WOW this is so fucking gay. No new Zeal remix? FF7 only? YOU CAN'T EVEN FIND ANYTHING BUT TECHNO?

Fucking djp."

And not be decried as an idiot?

Seriously, the online mode is lacking, but at least its there. You can point out the weakness, and frankly, I think there should be a third online mode with rankings and everything. In fact, we might even still get it. But to claim that Nintendo sucks for doing something more (and in fact, the CPU picking up for droppers is genius) is kinda annoying, especially with the way it was said.

Don't forget that this particular mode is meant for "quick and simple matches". Of course there's not going to be any options. They have that in the other modes right?

Think of it as playing a quick match on Pokemon Stadium 64 where you just get random Pokemon and start playing right away.

SIMPLE is what they want with this

What's up with this? Last night's post was considerably better than almost the whole week, unless you like Dedede.

It would probably be too much to ask everyone to stop whining. I like sarcasm and cynicism as much as the next guy, but these complaints are just amounting to "OH NO! NINTENDO DOESN"T DO ONLINE THE WAY I LIKE IT."

We can't even play the game yet, except for a few people who saw the demo version @ E4ALL, which wasn't finished by Sakurai's admission. They're still working on the freaking game. Go judge it when it's released.

Swapping out players w/ CPUs is a pretty good idea. Of course, we could have the game end abruptly... or the winner drop out and 3 N00bs win, but that's expected, right? I was surprised they came out with a new feature after so many crappy updates. You have to give them some credit for thinking out of the box. The developers ARE Japanese; it's not like they have some American expectation of gaming to live up to.

Now I'm the guy whining...

Seriously this thread is turning into "SMSH ONLINE IS XUCKSZZZZ!!!!! XD"

We can discuss the merits of the game, but whining about one feature when, prior to it's announcement everyone was dying for the game is freaking stupid. Don't play online. There. Problem solved...

Thalzon
12-07-2007, 05:16 PM
Depends on if they keep track of losses or wins.

I think records might be kept the same as they were in Melee -- that is, character-based (total damage done, total KOs, SDs, Falls, damage recovered, etc etc etc). As I recall, losses and wins weren't exactly part of those records.

They were under custom names. You could see how many games QWST won compared to HIJK. Or even better, the guys who think it's cool to use hiragana and katakana to replace alphabetical letters... Anyway, but yeah, in melee you could see wins, losses, blah blah blah almost everything.

Oh yeah, MEGA MAN FOR BRAWL!!!

People laughed at me when I suggested Jack from the Harvest Moon series and Brian from Quest 64, so for my unjust revenge, I'll laugh at you... But offline, so you don't get the smug satisfaction of quoting the laughter and calling it nerdy.

===
Here is the point in which I defend my stance, because nobody thinks I'm making a serious suggestion when, really, it can be a very good one.
===

Actually, Jack has major potential...

His forward smash could be much like Peach in SSBM, but rather than sports equipment, he'll use his main tools
[{Least Damage} Watering can, Hoe, Scythe, Ax, Hammer {Most Damage}]

His charged attack could be (this is the only part I haven't found a good suggestion for), maybe the fishing pole could release bigger and bigger fish? Meh, I know, but I tried.

and for his smash attack, they could use one of two things:
1] He opens an umbrella, which dramatically summons a gigantic thunder storm which hits everyone, besides Jack, within distance to take huge damage (Reference to HM:GBC, where the umbrella waters all plants nigh-instantaneously).
2] He pulls out one of his main tools, but this time, he prepares for a gigantic swing, and eventually is surrounded by a powerful aura, before finally letting loose an amazing attack (Reference to HM:FoMT, where, if you follow the right criteria, you will get cursed tools, bless them [in various ways] to make blessed tools, and [though another set of arduous criteria] upgrade them into Mythic tools [All three of these types of tools, when you charge them to these levels, surround your character in an aura, and releasing the power of the tool often has a dramatic affect on things around you, such as the Hammer releasing a blinding white light before destroying every stone, boulder, and rock in the area and the Hoe pretty much tilling an entire screen worth of soil when released, which is a lot]) so yeah... The effects this could have would be numerous and all would be effing awesome [Even the watering can could probably release hundreds of small drops which do 1 damage each].

What if they forced you to only play timed 4 player matches in offline games? Would you just say "don't play multiplayer"? If you don't like something, should you force yourself to be just indifferent to it? Brawl is a game that is focused on multiplayer, and is Nintendo's highest profile release so far for the Wii. Atma's already said it, but for some reason Nintendo's the only one that can get away with this shit.

Since the original SSB has been all about variety, options, and customization. I don't see why their online mode should be any different.

Admiral_C
12-07-2007, 07:56 PM
I don't automatically think of online gaming when I think of Smash Bros. though. If they nerfed the multiplayer aspect of it somehow, then I'd be a lot more disposed to rage then if they didn't release a complex online system.

They haven't given us a complex online mode, BUT that's not the main focus of the game. Never has been. Therefore, I say 'Meh' to the online mode. I can take it or leave it.

The Author

I'm just saying we don't know until the game is released how online will work. Trust me, if you can think of something, they are thinking about it right now. The best thing to do now is to get the updates, add to what we know about the game but don't assume it is all there is to know.

Up until the "online" announcement, people like Atma were saying stuff like "It's never gonna be online." When online gaming was announced, what I heard was "Yeah but you'll only be able to play with friends and not with strangers." And they introduced random anonymous play. And people found some details to bitch about.

Frankly, I would love for Smash to be a superior online experience, at this point, we have no clue how it will turn out simply because the game is neither completed nor released.

So for now, I recommend that people simply shut up, and wait until the information we have is final before complaining.

Your bitching about online capability at this point would be akin to me celebrating the inclusion of Captain Olimar.

Well, the problem with this view of things is that once it's final, it's final. If at that point things are not as we would like them, we can no longer do anything about it. The whole idea of "complaining" (or, from another perspective, providing input and feedback) is to let them know what features we would like, and if they don't receive any guidance in that regard then we're going to wind up disappointed.

I will, however, say that OCR is not the forum to bitch unconditionally on. Your complaints here will do no good, because even if Nintendo realizes people discuss the development of their game here daily, I guarantee they have no regard for your two cents in comparison to those of the much more numerous folks over at their own forums, or some place like Smashboards that's more of a renowned "authority" on the game. So if you folks want to discuss what you do and do not like about the game so far in a civil manner, fine, but if you just want to regurgitate the same disgusting bits of whine over and over then go somewhere else or get yourselves a bloody Livejournal.

Alright so I've been reading these past 5 pages and I've taken the arguments of both sides into account.

At this point I'll say yes, it could be better, but I'm happy for what I've got.

That said, at this point, I think we have not seen all there is to see regarding online mode. That is, I really don't think these are all the options that are going to be available, especially being released at this early time.

Sure this may be a long shot, a desperate hope that there is going to be something more, but if meaning is not lost in translation, then just check out what is actually being written in the update.

"Join a quick and simple brawl against someone, somewhere! If you’re not going to be playing with a friend, this is the mode you’ll tend to use." Major emphasis on the tend here, it kind of indicates that there will be more options, hopefully more than team battle.

"Huh? We’re already at character selection? That’s right. You don’t make any rooms." Ok, so at this point I'm thinking, why mention the idea of rooms if you're not going to perhaps use this option in another feature. This is giving me the indication that there may be a option with rooms later revealed....or they're are being really bitchy and rubbing it in...:-P

"When you have a battle mode that runs online like Basic Brawl" Ok, here the word like is used, indicating Basic Brawl is not the only option, again I am hoping he does not simply mean Team Battle or Spectator modes.

Ok so that's pretty much my two cents. I know it does sound very very hopeful, but I think at this point, it is still too early to come to conclusions. But Atma feel free to rub it in if I'm wrong, I will still be your anonomous friend on online mode.

Shying away from the whole "blah blah internet" thing... I honestly do not believe that THAT character selection screen is going to be the standard one in Brawl...

...I mean, there is no Kirby. Or several other characters, but Kirby seems more like a "starter" than that. Someone probably noticed this already, right?

That whole "replacing a person with a computer" thing, is kinda... Weird. I guess if you wanted to know if someone was replaced or not, you could just start ducking repeatedly and hope they catch on?

Oh, and most characters will be unlocked in the Adventure mode? In one playthrough probably, from the sound of it? Well, I hope that there are still a few that I can unlock by beating classic mode really fast, target mode, homerun contest... Etc... Those were fun.

I think we determined several hundred pages ago that Sakurai (or one of his employees) reads what we're predicting or discussing on this forum, as evidenced by his occasionally posting an update about it the next day. Of course, it could have been a series of coincidences. Assuming the former, however, it follows that what we say here is not merely read but has the potential to change the course of video game history. I for one would welcome another two-month delay if it meant the inclusion of an online mode with rankings and more options, the beginning of Nintendo's march into true online gaming. Not that that would take two months to program. And not that they haven't already implemented one (see DuskyFerret's sound reasoning). If Sakurai wants to keep the ranking mode a surprise, this is not a bad way to do it.

Also, what's the difference between "the items that are turned off in the item switch are also determined by lottery" and "all items are turned on"? Answer: nothing, if the rounds are short enough. This gives me hope because it means that perhaps it will randomly pick one of the four settings for the four players involved, supporting the theory Bean has suggested. For example, if all four players have their settings on no items, then there will be no items in that round.

Another thought: Brawl is to be released in Japan on January 24th. What should be our agreement on putting spoiler warnings around unreleased characters, stages, assist trophies, and the Subspace plot at that time? I propose we keep everything hidden until February 14th. Why so late? It's easy to remember (Valentine's Day) and allows us to participate in the First Official OverClocked SSBB Tournament without fear of having that information spoiled for us (except for the characters/stages that our opponents have unlocked).

P.S. Thanks for the compliment, Atma!

I think everyone is living with it. The problem is just that some of us are seeing complaining each nice, ad nauseum, seemingly following ANY sort of update. It's pointless to complain about every new aspect of a game you supposedly like. It's more like saying you're afraid the game will suck, and each day you get a little more evidence to substantiate your fears.

Life is too short to spend worrying about something you have no control over. Enjoy the updates, or sleep or something. We could've been totally in the dark like with 99% of games out there. Some people are enjoying these updates, including myself. If you don't like it, you can do something else, you don't need to post complaints every night over each minuscule quanta of update you dislike.

Although I honestly don't give a crap about Brawl's online capabilities they did handle it rather wrong.

What they should have done was made two types of online settings; one for the kiddies and their parents to have to limit all the BS for their own safety, and then another one for the more seasoned players who like to customize their own games and have a ranking system and all the other crap that everyone else wants.

In all seriousness I'll be happy playing my 10 minute long games against the computer, crapping all over them with Meta Knight (yes I like time matches).

The only way I would play online is if I had real friends and since I don't have any, it's whatever. (People in this state suck at life so bad I honestly don't want/need the kind of people here for friends, all they do is cause drama for themselves.)

So yeah, I'm open to play any of you guys if you'll be my online 'fwends' as Atma puts it.

Actually, it's ludicrous to even HINT at censoring or restricting online play.

The best way to do that is to take out the wireless router. I've did that before and it's failsafe. And what kind of retard takes anyone seriously from what is said over a game? I will never understand that logic.

PS- I'm glad to see SSBB incorporating some sort of a randomized online play. Even if it's pretty weird by jumping straight into the choosing screens. It seems the Japanese developers have no idea what 'lobbies' are and how advantageous they can be. Like testing connectivity, pre-game chat and set up, etc. Just about every fighting game I've played online was like that.

It's fine for people to complain, but when it's the same person complaining about it on every page, it gets old.

Thank you, this is an extremely valid point.

I know I was saying I'd stay away from this debate, but I just wanted to support that idea that "it's fine to complain, not everyone is going to like everything, it helps developers, blah blah". But yes, it gets annoying when it's the same person, as Bigfoot said. That said, I'm hoping that there is a way to get 1 vs. 1, 3 players, stock matches, etc. in online. I mean, yeah, you'd think that with all these option we're being given that they'll have something like that? At the very least, I hope to be snagging some friend codes from ye folk so I can play with all you'se. You'se mugs.

One thing that I'm very curious about is when someone gets replaced by a computer, what level will that computer be. It seems to me that the best possibilities would either be level 5 or level 9. It would seem kinda sucky if an inexperianced noob gets replaced by a level 9 computer mid-fight.

The game probably just takes whatever the handicap for the player before they d/c'd and applies it as a certain level for the computer. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do that, I guess if they D/C before the match starts the computer will just be set at medium level (like uh 4).

Oh my, I did not like that update one bit. Admittedly it's funny, but so very disappointing =(

I was wondering what kind of update they'd make for Christmas day... possibly same old same old, maybe some special Christmas related assist trophy or song... maybe they'll reveal the REAL online mode!

Did I say "Simple is best"?! What I meant was "Online mode is simply the best"! In online mode, you can choose all the options you want, just like regular group play. Ha ha, you didn't think we would make everyone play 2-minute matches, did you??? Who do you think I am, the Smash Nazi? "No stock for you!" Ha ha! Get it? "Stock"???

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/images/kirby/kirby_071009e.jpg

I made a joke about soup. Look at Kirby, I hear he is making soup!

Some people may be confused, because before there was no options button, and now there is an options button.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi01/wi-fi01_070918a.jpg

W- Where is the options button?!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207b.jpg

There it is!

This is where you choose your options. Isn't this more simple than forcing you to play 2 minute matches with 4 people? It's almost TOO simple. You can choose between 2, 5, and 10 minute Time matches, and 2, 4, or 8 Stock matches, and also the number of players. And of course, you can turn on Special Brawl. If Special Brawl is on, the kind of Special Brawl you play will be chosen by lottery, just like stages! All of these options are making me dizzy!

But how do you choose your skill level, so you can play against anonymous strangers of similar skill? It's stored with your name, of course!

By the way, this new online mode takes up so much room on the disk, we had to remove some of the characters. I apologize.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207d.jpg

These are all of the characters now. Kirby where did you gooooooooooo???

Kirby, come back! I- I love you Kirby!!

Personally, I don't like the idea of replacing players with a CPU. I'd like to play online mode for fun. But I don't play against CPUs, because I don't find it fun (they're just too dumb). So, if I choose a mode that was specifically added so you could play against other PEOPLE, why would I want them switched with CPUs??? If they're still as dumb as in Melee, you WILL be able to tell when a player drops out. It's when they start randomly jumping in the hole and failing to notice every move that takes more than 2 seconds to execute, while magically countering all of your fast attacks the frame before they get hit. Oh yes, and they'll ignore that extra fraction of a second called lag, and mystically locate Smash Balls and Golden Hammers that aren't even on the screen. If all these AI issues are addressed, then I'll be quite pleasantly surprised.

TheCatPhysician

I think everyone is living with it. The problem is just that some of us are seeing complaining each nice, ad nauseum, seemingly following ANY sort of update. It's pointless to complain about every new aspect of a game you supposedly like. It's more like saying you're afraid the game will suck, and each day you get a little more evidence to substantiate your fears.

Life is too short to spend worrying about something you have no control over. Enjoy the updates, or sleep or something. We could've been totally in the dark like with 99% of games out there. Some people are enjoying these updates, including myself. If you don't like it, you can do something else, you don't need to post complaints every night over each minuscule quanta of update you dislike.

this is the only thing i've posted that i dislike though.

also bigfoot, what's wrong with comparing battle.net to brawl's online in that regard? i'm just showing how it's possible to have a free online that isn't unnecessarily crippled. i mean, you can't even choose how many players are in the match when you go to play. nintendo doesn't need to have a big subscription-based online system just to give the user a few basic (and i mean really basic) options.

and from what i can see, every time this is brought up, people always try to justify nintendo. i hear crap like "just be happy you're getting any online at all" no, it really does suck that brawl's online is crippled.

brawl will still be awesome, and i wouldn't let something like how the online system is set up affect my judgment of the game on a whole. that's got nothing to do with the actual gameplay and everything.

Why would they make such a point to add the word "anonymously" if there weren't a non-anonymous (nominal?) mode that could be played with people you don't know?

I was wondering what kind of update they'd make for Christmas day... possibly same old same old, maybe some special Christmas related assist trophy or song... maybe they'll reveal the REAL online mode!

All I want for Christmas is a Belmont. And Mega Man. And a real online mode.

So, if I choose a mode that was specifically added so you could play against other PEOPLE, why would I want them switched with CPUs???

What else are you going to do if someone's connection fails? Let's consider the alternatives. Playing with CPUs > playing against Sandbag (though that would be funny) > playing against nobody >> waiting 45 seconds to drop the player, then quitting the game because he was your teammate. Hahaha StarCraft.

We don't know yet whether you have any options in friends games, except that you can do 2-4 player matches. It has rooms, but I don't see any 'options' button anywhere.

When doing With Anyone, you should be able to make a lobby with yourself or with some friends, then be able to do matchmaking for timed, stock, team, item settings, giant melee, fixed camera, whatever. That way they could still keep their stupid anonymous bullshit while giving us some freedom.

Or they could just do the traditional style where there's a list of rooms to join, each with a host who chooses all the settings. Either way would be a whole lot better than what we have now.

Also CPUs replacing players that drop out is an alright idea. It's just the fact that it doesn't tell you when they drop that pisses me off. Why Nintendo needs to needlessly hold information, I don't know.

I haven't followed the ssbb stuff too closely...basically just grabbing whatever updates come off vgcats or CAD, but I don't know too much about online mode.
All I'm wondering is...will they allow 1v3 matches? Because those were some of the most fun matches I had with friends, but other online games I've played haven't let you do that...
Honestly I'd just like to see an online mode with all the bells and whistles melee vs mode had to offer.
Though from the sounds of some of the posts on this thread I'm not quite sure if things'll turn out that well...

I suppose the fact that they've shown "with friend" matches being chosen from a list of preset "rooms" might indicate that there are a multitude of options to tinker with before a friend code battle. Though, oddly, there wasn't any clarification in that regard, so I suppose I filled in some blanks myself subconsciously and... just assumed there was a "With Friends" update.

64 may sound like a lot but hey so did 100 on xbl (no im not even close to filling that but tons of people are)
and being that you are going to WANT TONS of people on your friends list since the non friends play is balls youre gonna register a LOT of people

it would require NOTHING on nintnedos part to make the list a LOT bigger

omg animal crossing character clone

Interesting observation, considering the Harvest Moon series started in the SNES era and Animal Crossing started in the GCN era.

Brian could be an interesting addition. Only problem is that Quest 64 kinda sucked.

That's the only thing holding it back, though... It was a nintendo-exclusive series (another game was made for GB(/C?), There are quite a few ways the various spells could be used for attacks, Ultimate Wind or Avalanche would make amazing Smash Attacks, and Mammons' theme rocks. Which is why I said the Jack and Brian would be great choices, due to their potential.

I doubt it will give you a choice on how many players per match. I see it working like Mario Kart DS; you search for players until the timer runs out, then fight with however many there are that joined the match

But back to something at least somewhat on-topic: Nothing is moot on this topic due to the simple fact that so little is truly known to us about something that is best learned through experience rather than mere speculation, and since all we have to go off of is speculation, then this topic, in turn, must become about our speculations. Saying that arguing the semantics of the limited information provided to us is a moot point, in itself, seems a moot point considering what was stated previously. So to be on-topic is to speculate on things we can only imagine, so really, this discussion of what characters would be good in SSBB, what options should or shouldn't be, and so on is exactly what this topic requires and arguing the semantics of our arguments of semantics is, I shall say it again, a moot point.

IOW: I just proved that objective opinions and logical discussion is a moot point on this topic, while arguing things we couldn't possibly know and pulling ideas out of our asses is perfectly on topic.

Note: This is likely to be dissected and beat to a pulp, but at least I tried... Well... Gave a half-assed attempt at making it LOOK like I tried, and really, isn't that all that counts? The answer is no, and that I phail.

1. Cool character concept - ie. the whole 'possessed puppet' thing.
2. Cool moves. Geno Whirl, Geno Blast, Geno Flash, Geno Beam, Geno Boost... he may be kind of self-centered, I guess, if you go by the move names, but he has the right to be.
3. He can shoot pretty much anything out of his extremities. His index finger is a small minigun, his forearms are rocket-powered, he can fire cannonballs from his elbows, and - oh, what else? A sludge gun, as well.

Huh. I guess it's a pretty good idea. Kinda unnecessary, but hey, if they got the disk space for it why the hell not.

Because instead of adding useless playing modes they could add more music, stages, characters, assist trophys, pokemon, items, and Falco.. he better be in

ive always played winner out and stuff but with the addition of custom control schemes and whatnot this is actually a pretty good idea

That was my thought. Basically he took what everyone did in those situations anyway, and made it automatic, which is dang helpful considering custom controls and everything. And it'd be especially helpful if there was a Random Out option, which you can't really do by yourself anyway.

It's quite often that I have more than three people who would be willing to play Smash Bros. with me, so this addition will make things very easy, especially with all the crazy controller settings we'll be getting this time around. Not an amazing update, but definitely a cool feature.

Not to mention that if you manually swap out, there is the problem of having a crappy player screw up your lead in the amount of KO's. That has happened many times. Agreed, and I think another advantage of ranks is that seeing your rank rise creates a sense of accomplishment in playing online. A shallow and largely false sense of accomplishment, yes, but it still serves to keep more people interested in online play. I'll admit that I have tried to keep my rank at least decent in some other online games.

THOUGHT EXPERIMENT!!

1) Imagine you and 500 random people are in a room, gathered to play some game that involves around 2-4 players. Chess, Halo, Smash Bros, whatever, you're all there to play that one game. Now you want to play "the game" with another person or group of people, it could be anybody... why not the random guy beside you? The first thing you'll ask this would-be opponent (or that they'll ask you) is something along the lines of "are you any good at this game?" And why? Because if you're really good, and they're really bad (or vice versa), it's not gonna be very fun. If you've never played the game before, you don't want to be stuck playing against some amazing master. If you've played the game for a while, you don't want to play a beginner, and chances are you'll still want to stay away from opponents that will destroy you before you know what happened.

2) Now imagine 500 random people in a room to play a game, same scenario as before. But this time everyone has their mouths taped shut, and are wearing identical uniforms complete with identity-hiding masks. And since you can't ask would-be opponents if they're any good or not (non-verbal communication is forbidden), all you can do is play with random people of random skill. Welcome to Brawl "With Anyone" mode.

Granted, if you consider the first scenario, chances are Atma would be there continually yelling "BALLS" at the top of his voice the entire time... so you really can't win either way. What's needed is a balance between the two. Brawl's online mode would be 100 times better if you could [I]choose your freaking skill level, and change some of the options...!!

But noobs will always outnumber skilled players. Like in all online games...
Try playing StarCraft on Battle Net. Even the games that say "Newbs only" are really pros pretending to be newbies so they can raise their win percentage.

Updates still to come:
- 9x Special Moves
- 3x Final Smash
- Couple of Pokemon (the blue flying killerwhale and the burning chicken for example), so minimal 2
- Couple of Support Trophies (what I know is that we'll get a Metroid and Advance Wars tanks somewhere), so also minimal 2
- Probably one new character (would give us 12 new basic characters and 12 old basic characters) including FS/SM updates, total of 3 (let's hope it's Megaman on Monday then )
- Maybe some new stages

Total of about 20 updates at least that will probably be revealed before 10th of Februari.

There might be a lot of hidden characters, and some of them like Luigi and Captain Falcon will definitely be in it, so why not show them already and keep a few interesting ones hidden until the release itself.

Well, just my two cents.

I like Trigger a lot too, but there's a problem. Trigger's not really representative of the Mega Man liscense. Plus, he was only in one game on a Nintendo console, which doesn't look quite as good. X was in three (five if you count the GBC games), while Rock was in many more. Plus, if the logic that Mega Man's in due to the 20th Anniversery comes into effect, it will probably be Rock because he's the one who's anniversery they're actually celebrating.

I can't imagine this would be easily adaptable to Smash's engine. At least, it wouldn't have been easily adaptable in Melee... maybe Brawl could have more gravity-bending levels, though.

friendlyHunter

Multiplayer races could be fun if everyone's the same character, and with enough hazards and chaos so the guy who gets in front at the start doesn't stay in front the entire race. Even then, it'd probably be not as fun as Brawling. Although... there's sure to be abundant races towards the Smash Ball!

A Mario Galaxy stage could work incredibly well, if it's one of the many levels with "normal" gravity, where down is always down. If there's a Mario Galaxy stage, my money's on Honeyhive Galaxy. That place is pretty much the embodiment of the whole game. And I just LOVE those bees!

If Megaman's 20th anniversary really IS Monday, then I finally have some reason to get my hopes up. That, and the fact that it's nearing the Japan release, there's one missing newcomer slot on the Characters page, and still at least one new franchise icon left. ....I-Is it all too good to be true?
Only time will tell! (http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/3526/megamanbrawlph2.gif)

this thread losts its original meaning long ago

Interesting point. Let's look back to the history of this thread. I hereby announce the first annual Smash Brothers Brawl thread awards. Now for recognitions, listed In the order of which they happened.

First reply. This award goes to Arek. Congrats. Though your skepticism was fortunately wrong.
You really think they will show the next smashbros at this e3? Sounds doubtful....

First accurate guess at a new character.
I'm really excited to see whether or not the Smash Bros. Wii can improve upon Melee. The first way they can do that is to have Pit as playable character!

Second somewhat accurate guess.
I got to thinking what would happen if they placed Ash in the game. I know it's stupid, and he'd suck, but I thought about it because the pokeballs look huge in the game. If they placed Ash in the game, they'd have to make him big enough to enable him to put his fingers around the pokeball, meaning he'd have to be bigger then Bowser. His attack would be screaming I CHOOSE YOU PIKACHU at the top of his lounges for projectile damage.

First post after it was officially announced. (Sorry Jam Stunna, just a tad slow)

GO NOW~!!!

First mention of Sonic, page 14.
I have a feeling Sonic may be in there...

My first post here. <3
I'm hoping for an Advance Wars related character, personally.

And thanks to everybody else who competed. Better luck next 10,000 post thread. Please, take this consolation picture.

Why do you display at 20 posts per page?

Because then there's 50% less clicking to do when reading through a 10000 post thread. Or even a 100 post one.

Also, 40?

because when phpbb went to vb it went from 15 to 10 and 10 was just too little for me and honestly 20 is too long i want 15 back :[

i think by the past few posts we can all see that because of the lack of uniformity that any amount of pages to any individual person is kinda silly
but if you wanna dance around your room in some kind of bizarre celebration of a certain amount of replys to a topic on the internet go right ahead

I'd like to see characters other than Shy Guys in the Karts, but I suppose they're all busy brawling, so to speak?

Well, this is certainly decent. This looks like a convoluted version of Mute City (minus the moving background...)

Nice stage. Very nice indeed.

Can't wait for some batting practice against those karts... but where are the MK items? As long as they don't put in those stupid dirtbikes or whatever from the Wii version, I'll be happy.

Edit: I think I'm also going to have some fun planting motion sensing bombs and traps on the kart route, I'm gonna be the first one to discover all the ways to blow up those shy guys =O

Motion Mines? Why hit one cart when you can hit ALL of them, with a Final Smash! Being Gigi Bowser or Super Sonic will no doubt be funny on that stage, at least for a little while. Or using the Landmaster, or Mario's final, or Pikachu's ^_^

And am I alone in disliking Mute City? I hate how the platforms always disappear from under you, especially when they're not on the screen. This stage is a welcome alternative =)

Uhhhh...Isn't this stage a blatant rip-off of Mute City? One stage that follows a course of vehicles that hit you can cause damage?

Captain Falcon not in SSBB confirmed?

Hey cool, it's a decent update at last!
Man, anything like a stage or a support trophy is a blessing nowadays.

And why the doubting about Captain Falcon..?
What was one of the first known support trophies.......?

Exactly, Samurai Goroh, 'Captain Falcons rival' as stated on the site.

Why include him and not the Capt'n himself.

Nuff said.

I thought it was pretty much agreed that none of the original secret characters would be announced on the site, and they would just turn up in the game. Unless I've missed something, that makes a whole lot of sense.

maybe Luigi, Jigglypuff, and Falcon have to be unlocked like in the first 2 or maybe replacement characters are being made for them like Lucas was a replacement for ness

It would have been neat if the racers were selected randomly from those characters not in the current Brawl. Anyway, I'm in favor of this stage.

I think this stage will be better than Mute City -- I like how the cars come from different places (above) now.

Airwalker

This better mean there will be a Smash Brothers level in Mario Kart Wii. You drive along and then, oh no, gotta dodge the random characters fighting in the middle of your road. (Probably will just be shy guys fighting.) Even honking your horn doesn't get their attention. And sometimes they attack you.

That would be super cool.
And I really hope they bring back Mute City because it was one of my favorites. Unless they come up with a new really cool stage for Cptn. Falcon that will take from the previews 2 and improve on them + really cool music. That would be the winning formula :-D

I'd like to see a more integrated F-Zero stage that accurately represents some of the tracks from GX (or an unannounced F-Zero Wii game, which needs to happen).

I never understood why they chose him to clone Captain Falcon. There are quite a bit different.
