Remixes v Originals

Lately, Iv found that I have little to no inspiration to do any original works. I do 3-4 bars with 5-6 instruments, save and never go back to it. Iv found that I get more feedback and appreciation for the music if its a mix (thats here at least, but i dont hang at any other music sites). Aditionally, a part of the song is already written, giving me a head start in the process. Seeing as I dont intend to sell my music, I can imagine that I'l cut out original works completely, I pretty much have already.

Have any other mixers here found a lack of drive to create originals? And whats the ratio of your remixs to original works?

I was like that a few months ago. After a while that sort of drive fell and now all I make is originals and I dislike doing remixes.

I do both, but making original melodies is most important.

I'm starting to lean more towards originals now too, which means fewer and fewer Darangen remixes as time goes on.

Remixing is still fun though, so I won't stop completely.

Yup, same here. I mostly only mix for PRC, ORC and some projects. Outside of that it's mostly originals though.

I'm not HIGHLY EDUCATED in music so getting the stuff out of my head and on to paper or a sequencer before it degrades is hard, sometimes impossible.

I'm sure if I understood music theory better, I'd be doing a lot of original stuff and enjoying it.

I prefer making originals but I sometimes get patches where it is hard to start or work on original stuff. This is when I tend to remix, mostly it's just quick jobs to try and get back some ideas a la PRC/ORC. I do try to make the odd remix fully occassionally, i.e. for the projects I'm on. Mostly I work on originals, and very few of them get completed.

Remixes are fun to do once in a while, but you always have the issue of having to be 'true to the source' so to speak. However, when you're short of original ideas remixes can help keep your musical spirit up.

With originals of course, you can do what the hell you like - sometimes you can be stuck though and you don't know what the hell to do next.

Only if the intention is to submit it to a site as a remix. I find it's more fun to take the source away and see how many directions you can take it in, even making it sound like an original piece in some instances. Although when I come to remixing for sites I find myself having to constantly restrict what I'm doing. I prefer not to use MIDI files when remixing because it takes away a lot of the interpretation which is where most of my remixing ideas come from.
