Darkrai get. Brush rocks hard.

And Damned, we'll do the Salamence thang later. Thanks d00ds.
Sure.

By any chance, did you check out the IVs on your Darkrai? Mine is... well... bad. HP is middle range, Speed was actually pretty high, and everything else was rock-bottom. Zeros across the board.

Well, it's not like I was planning on using it any way, but still... Ah well, at least I have one. Now to just find someone with a spare Celebi, Lugia, Ho-oh, Arceus, and Shaymin.

Yeah, like that's going to happen.

Right now I'm just trying to do 100% type stuff on all the games I already have so I have an honest excuse for new games. Most of this is grinding in FF3. I wish I could find my copy of Lost Magic (heh) so I can beat it.

Anyway, I was thinking about building an A-Team with the strongest non legendary Pokes.

"Strongest" is a kind of loose term. Stats alone don't mean much, just as having an awesome movepool is worthless without the stats to back them up.

If you're interested in the Over Used (OU) tier, where you have big powerhouses and skillful use of slimmer, sneakier pokes, then I would suggest heading on over to smogon.com for some ideas. Hit up this area (http://www.smogon.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=54) in particular, where they go over the accepted standard movesets for various pokémon.

These guys tend to play a lot more than most people, so they've pretty much covered all the metagame stuff, and know how the game mechanics work. Resident OCRer OmegaDonut hails from there, by the way.

I want this. NOW. October 25 in Japan, so... that'll take how long to get to the states? I loved the original. Now we have two screens (no more waiting to check stats) two new races, more jobs, and what is not to like about this? My handheld pleasures (insert cock joke here) are not complete without it.

Is there a real difference between screen protectors? Do they discolor the screen?(I heard some give a yellow tint), do they make the screen dimmer? Is it harmful to the touch screen when you have to take them off?

I ask this because before I go and spend money on some Hori screen protectors, I have these at work that I can get for only $6.

Apparently they are made by Pelican.

My brother uses a set of protectors on his DS lite. As far as I can tell, they've been working great. No noticeable effects with the touch screen, no discoloration, no dimming. I don't think he's replaced them since last Christmas, either.

I can't remember the brand name of the one's he's using, though. They were bought in a Walmart of all places and I don't think they were too expensive.
The only identifying feature I can think of right now is that the top screen protector is fairly rigid and has a white frame; it wasn't like the clear film-like protector for the touch screen.

Most of the legendaries I got were traded with the Darkrai that I got when I saw the movie. The extra ones I got are from one of my friends who worked at the theatre. He also ended up getting all of the extra promo cards they gave out at the movie too. So now I have a plethora of Darkrai cards and other promotional crap.

Most of stuff I have gotten on my game however I got trading the Darkrai to the event hungry kids that dwell on Serebii.net. I don't go there much anymore cause they live in an imaginary world were Japan and the events that are there don't exist.

I realize that the above is slightly redundant of itself. >___<

Picked up Phantom Hourglass yesterday and I'm actually really enjoyed it so far. At first I was skeptical on the game being controlled via only the stylus but it translates better than I figured it would. I haven't had much to time to progress so far (I've only just reached the Isle of Ember to find Astrid), but I'm looking forward to what the game has to offer.

Also, has anyone heard tell of of Dementium: The Ward (http://kotaku.com/gaming/clips/dementium-the-ward-gameplay-307997.php)? (Kotaku Link)
Developed by Renegade Kid it looks like we could get a decent horror genre of game on the DS. Maybe it could even make up for the mediocrity that was Touch the Dead?

Oh my God, this is wonderful! I had given up home for Fire Emblem DS because it had been so long. I figured they would have done this years ago!

I wonder what setting it will be in. I wonder if this be the beginning of a whole new story line, or will this be a continuation of a previous story, such as FE8, the Sacred Stones?

What on Earth prompted you to do that? Seriously, trolling is uncool.

That is a ton of games. Actually, probably a good few pounds, but besides the point. And a good few of them will actually be playable (here's to hoping Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is). The new look for Advance Wars is really drawing me in. I liked the look of the old games too, but for some reason I like this look better. Maybe because it's slightly more realistic in it's portrayal of war? Iunno.

Front Mission is going to be great too. It's a classic. It looks more like a port with some enhancements, but that doesn't bother me - it's a good strategy game. Unlike the mediocre stuff that's already come out for DS, like Luminous Arc and, dare I say it or my throat will bleed, Hoshigami DS. How that game ever made it past the Playstation era I'll never know.

Dementium: The Ward looks like a really good survival horror experience for DS. The two horror-related games I own for DS are too cheesy to be considered scary (RE:DS and Touch The Dead). Seems both DS and PSP are attempting a survival horror game each (PSP's got Silent Hill Origins). Here's to hoping the results are good!

I think a few pages back people were getting all worried about the new style, but I actually kind of like the new look. It looks like Intelligent Systems has an idea or two of what they're actually doing with the new look and it still seems to manage being able to distinguish itself.

Fire Emblem DS looks like a winner in terms of its new art style too. Not as drastic as AW but it seems Intelligent Systems is going all across the board for getting rid of some of the softness.

@Brushfire2004: There's a new Ouendan coming out? Shit, when? I love those games. I'm just glad that I can call "hot-blooded attorney action" an actual genre due to Harvey Birdman's arrival. Thank God for Capcom picking up awesome licenses.

Shit, Fire Emblem DS looks pretty hot. Though really I don't see much of a difference, except that the screens I'm seeing look more realistic (read: brown).

@The Damned: Much the same - I'm looking forward to a few more titles scattered over this year and next, but I'm not going to buy absolutely everything. I refuse to buy a Zelda game out of the principle that at least three of my friends have bought it, and Zelda games are short - thus it's a good loaner title. Anyone available to help me with the Final Fantasy III mognet sidequest? I lost my copy of the game (or it was stolen by someone looking at our apartment before we moved out, I'm not sure; I lost a couple other games at the same time). I've gotten a new copy and want to get the stupid Mognet messaging done.

I'm at the earliest point in the game where I can access Mognet, and intend on making a permanent save as soon as I've sent 7 messages so I don't have to do this again if I restart. You can get around the one-hour limit for sending messages if you reset your DS clock, so what I'm hoping for is to hop on AIM/MSN with someone and alternate with them between sending messages and shutting off the DS to bump the clock up an hour and a bit to resend, so all 7 get done at once.

Anyone willing and able to help me out?

I think a few pages back people were getting all worried about the new style, but I actually kind of like the new look. It looks like Intelligent Systems has an idea or two of what they're actually doing with the new look and it still seems to manage being able to distinguish itself.

Fire Emblem DS looks like a winner in terms of its new art style too. Not as drastic as AW but it seems Intelligent Systems is going all across the board for getting rid of some of the softness.

:|

I'm a big Advance War fan, but I am embarrassed to say I literally just stumbled upon the news of AWDS2 a little bit ago. With all the other games coming out, I guess it lost me in the fray. Plus, I don't come in this thread often, nor have I actively been watching for a new AW.

In any case, I really do love what I see from those screenshots. Certainly not soft at all! It looks so much grittier. I like it.

Yeah, I'm really excited about Front Mission (didn't get to play it the first time around, and this kinda game being on DS is ideal for me). When I go preorder Fire Emblem for Wii this weekend, I'm gonna have to preorder that as well. Man, too many awesome-sounding SRPGs coming out soon, I'm not gonna have enough time to play them all!

I have this one, but I really have no idea what it's called... There's really no good standardization of these accessories. I purchased it at the Nintendo World Store though. It has two pouches, a big one and a small one, for your GBA and DS games respectively. Sorry I can't be of too much help. But at the very least, you know it exists!! :D

I have the same case as Katsurugi and I recommend it. I've been happy with it. If you get the plastic cases that can hold 4 DS games, 2 in each side, you can easily fit 8 DS games, the DS unit, and an extra stylus or 2 in that case.

I partially agree, but the dialogue in every previous AW game has been downright retarded. I'm waiting to see some Fire Emblem caliber story and character depth. The new battle scenes look much better too.

It just sucks that the characters from previous games likely won't be in it. Then again, a few Black Hole COs from AW2 who weren't in the campaign of AWDS were unlockable so hope remains.

Man, I am not liking Advance Wars DS 2... The gameplay and everything looks solid, just, the style of it I just can't get used to. I mean Advance Wars was never supposed to be realistic, I mean hell, you fought aliens. But the characters were really colorful, I loved the style of the old Advance Wars (man, I'm gonna have to start calling them the "old" now...). The new CO's look really bland in comparison. Well, I can HOPE for some old CO's to be unlockables. If Sturm is in it, then that'll definitely get me interested.

While I agree that the brighter palette, slightly more SD-looking humans, and directly perpendicular perspective in the battle sequences of Dual Strike were more preferable, those 3 things are really the only big changes between that and Days of Ruin. I honestly don't see it as that great a leap, and even if it were I'd still be very much excited for this new Advance Wars since I enjoyed Dual Strike so much. Seems to me people are getting a little out of hand with this "It's totally different now, that sucks!" perspective.

With or without screen protectors is fine. I think that you'd only really NEED a screen protector is when playing EBA or something like that. Otherwise, most of the games aren't too stylus heavy with constant poking... especially though spinners in EBA, some people like to press really hard when doing those even when they don't have to.

Actually, my sister doesn't have any screen protectors and I like to use hers more than mine because it's more responsive. *shrugs*

I'm pretty pissed because I just pressed the back button after typing a shitload of stuff. Fuck.

Anyhow, keep in mind the DS is manufactured with 2 screens: The first type has a smooth image and is more responsive. The second type is probably what you have on your DS: the screen colours are more vibrant, but the LCD crystals seem to have a sort of shimmeriness to them and the viewing angle is a little more narrow than the other type, not to mention the lag. The second type have a fraction of second of lag but it's extremely noticeable.

When I got my first DS, I had the less responsive type, but had a dead pixel and returned it. I was fortunate enough to get the more responsive type of screen.
Incidentally when I got my DS Lite I got the same less responsive type of screen but I had to return it because the microphone didn't work. I wouldn't find out until later that I just had my face too far into the mic. But anyhow, the second DS Lite I got out of it had the more responsive type once again.

In regards to screen protectors, I've tried a few of them and here's what I have to say:
The Hori ones are just not worth it. They're not very good and you have to pay a whole lot more just to get your hands on a set. The only upside is that you get a soft clean cloth out of it. If there's anyone anal about keeping their screens it good condition it'll probably be me. But the Hori protectors are made of some kind of rubbery plastic material with an odd texture that literally gives you less control over your stylus. There's more resistance required to move your stylus across the screen, but once you get it sliding it just slips all over the place. Tires your hands out more that way. Not only that, but if you wear down your stylus or get some dirt stuck on it the stylus will grate against the material causing huge, gaping scratches in the protectors. Kind of counter-intuitive.

I got some $8 hard plastic protectors from EB for my DS Lite and they've been doing a much better job of lasting over the year I've had them. Just do a little research and make sure the type you buy comes off okay. Sometimes less is more.

I'd be afraid to play stylus-heavy games like Zelda and Starfox Command without a screen protector. They're full of fast swiping movements and I tend to press my writing utensils hard.

No offense, but... you haven't found anything.

Using a cheat device to walk though walls isn't a discovery. It's just cheating. And if you have the means to cheat like that, you can just make those pokemon appear anytime, anywhere. It would be easier and faster then walking around in limbo or cutting across maps.

When someone discovers a means to get to them without the use of an Action Replay or other hacking device, please come and tell us.

In my opinion, the first Front Mission hasn't aged gracefully (well, the music still rocks). Maybe it's the small screen, but it just doesn't feel as good as it did before.

If you're a fan of Phoenix Wright you *need* to finish 3. Advent is also very good but if you played ZX 1, you played Advent already (though it is definetly worth playing if you can afford both games).

I think there may be hope for the world. The end is nigh.
I played two licensed Disney games, and I enjoyed them both. This statement may tear a hole in the universe, but I found Hannah Montana Music Jam and Power Rangers Super Legends to be good games.

I only played the music creating portion of the Hannah Montana game and I found it to be more enjoyable than Jam Sessions. There aren't a lot of chords to choose from, but you can play individual notes on the guitar and therefore play chords by playing the actual notes (suck on THAT, Jam Sessions). Rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar, and drums are the instruments you can play. Sadly, things just feel clunky when trying to make a song but mad drum solos can probably fix anything.

On a less testicle destroying note, Power Rangers Super Legends is a fun, old school, side-scrolling beat-em-up. Frankly, the graphics look like they belong on the GBA (except for the 3d levels), the enemies are repetetive (pallette swap and slight sprite modifications, more hit points, etc), and the storyline (which involves time travel and whatnot) will make your brain bleed in pain what with the lame dialogue, paradoxes, and plot holes. And you can repeatedly uppercut enemies to the top screen and back down until they can no longer retain physical form. Nevertheless, if you like old-school brawlers, you should like Super Legends. It also has overhead shooter levels and first-person touchscreen giant robot battles, both of which use decent 3D graphics. And the music rocks like only the 16-bit era can.

Question: Which of the brain trainy games do you think is the best?

Brain training annoys me so much because it adds vast chunks to your time for getting an answer wrong because the game didn't recognise the number you drew, however I appreciate the Sudoku puzzles and the musical challenge in more brain training.

I've been enjoying Big Brain Academy much more since we got it, as the games are more inventive and more fun, and getting one wrong doesn't obliterate your score, it just takes time out of your minute for each challenge. I've been having so much fun with it in the two days I've had it that I've already beaten the professors brain score (I think I got 1709g?).

Just wondering which one of the two everyone prefers or if its just me.

Personally, I like Brain Training over Big Brain Academy. Though Big Brain Academy seems like it has more fun games, I could see myself getting bored with it pretty fast. Certainly, when you unlock the harder difficulties, it definitely extends the playability in Brain Training. Being able to only do certain exercises once a day though limiting, makes me look forward to being able to play it the next day.

Anyway, I just started on Phoenix Wright: Justice for All. Finished the introductory trial and into the first big case. These games are awesome.

At the same time the Dual Shock doesn't feel right anymore. After growing up I found that the size of the controller started to hurt my hands. I found that I had outgrown my beloved controller.

I toyed around with how many stars I could get before defeating the Big Bob-Omb (save the one behind the gate, I found it impossible to get any other of the 1st course's stars without him), and getting the other stars out of their prescribed order.

Even with the control, that game is just too hard to hate. :<

So... I finally got Dementium: The Ward.

If you don't know, Dementium is a FPS zombie survival game. Think Silent Hill/Resident Evil in form, but Half-Life in function.

And despite getting some pretty damn good reviews (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/dementiumtheward) from various sites, it still seems to slip under people's radar. In fact, most of the places I went to looking for it said they never heard of it.

Top screen shows the action, bottom screen is your aim, health display, menu, map, weapon select and notepad. You can write down stuff you come across (when I got the notepad, it said "why did you do it?!?!", to which I automatically wrote "for the lulz"). Handy feature, as clues are not saved for you in anyway.

Music and sound are subtle. Most of the time, you aren't really noticing it. Even the heartbeat from your health meter isn't really there. But monster screams are solid. You know there's something in the room with you from the start.

I'm only into the third chapter (which judging from the meager map I have, which is only two of seven floors, and only of one half of the total building, is nowhere near the end), but I have found that it is actually pretty decent.

The developers recommend playing with headphones, and I can see why. It's more... enclosing. Play it in the dark, with the door locked. That way the cat can't jump up on you when you're trying to explore a blood-smeared maternity ward. Fucking cat...

The difficulty level seems to jump a bit at times. Until you get the first firearm, you're going to take damage a lot. Luckily, there are lots of pill bottles to restore your health. Big gripe: you can't take them with you. If you need to restore your health, you have to go back to wherever you saw one last, and zombies repopulate the rooms you just left sometimes. But then once you have the gun, the zombies seem to die to good old fashioned smashing a lot easier.

And those fucking screaming flying head things... expect to die the first time you bump into them. Several times, actually. Just avoid them if you can.

All in all, it seems to be pretty much what one can expect. It's a zombie shooter in a freaky hospital at night, loaded with dark hallways and little puzzles to advance your way scattered about. The fact that it's on the DS makes it stand out a lot more.

I know the game has just about zero chance for localization, but the one DS game I anticipate the most (yes, above FFTA2, FFXII Revenant and all those big names) is a soccer RPG game. Inazuma Eleven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X69QTgk7YAs) it's called and it's developed by Level 5 which lives by its RPG creed (and underrated all around) and the music will feature Yasunori Mitsuda. And its voice acting includes Junko Takeuchi (Naruto) and other top notch voice actors.

This could turn out to be one of the best sports RPGs ever released. And finally a really strange, PS2-esque super project under the radar.

Went back and played Hotel Dusk again, second playthrough, and got the secret ending. I forgot how wrapped up I got in the story. I was just playing it to kill time and I ended up getting re-addicted to it.

There's a LOT of talking. A loooooooot of talking. Probably more than half the game is reading through text. But it's OKAY because said text is the text to an incredibly intriguing story, and one of the best I've seen in a video game. Still, it gets annoying when you want to go do something else and the characters won't shut up...

BUT STILL. Hotel Dusk is greatness. If you haven't already, PLAY IT. Get ready for a looot of text, though.

Contact isn't bad, it's just it's not really all that exceptional, either. The story barely makes any sense at all, combat is largely automated (like FF12, but with just one character instead of three), and there's only 6 real dungeons, nearly half of which lack real boss fights.

The end boss, though, was reasonably epic, making up for the nearly unforgivable mediocrity of the department store dungeon and military base dungeon.

My brother gave it to me for Christmas, but I haven't tried it yet. Not a big fan of the FF Tatics style games, unfortunatly. :\

Revenant Wings isn't at all like Tactics. For one thing, Tactics is (IMO) more strategic and is turn based, while Revenant Wings is real-time. Tactics gives you a lot of control over your party and how to customize it; Revenant Wings lets you summon monsters (who you can unlock in a somewhat-predefined order) in addition to your static party members who don't really change other than acquiring fixed skills.

Revenant Wings isn't bad, and it's certainly better than Heroes of Mana, but it could be a lot better. It's nowhere near as rich a strategy game as any of the Warcraft games, PC vs. handheld limitations duly noted. It's probably the best strategy game on the DS right now, but unless you're dying to have a strategy game on your handheld, it's probably not worth the effort.

I second that for the European market. While I've found that there's a bit of a learning curve behind it, as well as pretty steep increases in monster levels in certain areas, it's a great game nonetheless.

Sure, it's not the best in the FF series by any means (I'll let 7 and 8 battle that one out) but it's still a solid game in its own respects. And after seeing the original Famicom box art, I'm glad they re-done that image with the traditional white FF background, á la the other games in the series since 7.

A lot off-topic, but relevant none the less.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Whoever decided getting my mum Brain Training for Christmas is a right git. Because I can't get near the DS any more, she's hooked on the Sudoku on it :(

I hate useless, ultimately non-descriptive terms. With that said...

Think of Phoenix Wright as a tribute to all of the text-adventure games you've ever played. I would go so far as to say that it is functionally this generation's "Monkey Island". It is intelligent, makes you think, and manages to be absolutely hilarious while doing so. Admittedly, the first case of each game babies you, but by the time you reach the end of game 1 case 2, you'll be hooked (or you'll know that you won't like it, but that won't happen, right?)

Anyone who has played the first (or second game) and hasn't finished the third must do so _now_, by the way. 3-5 is an amazing way to end Phoenix's trilogy.

Game 1, case 2 was my least favorite in the series thus far. Kinda traumatizing IMO (well not really, but you know what I mean), and the characters were just annoying.

I just finished Trials & Tribulations this morning, and I can say with confidence that there was no better way to end Phoenix's series. It pretty much tied together every major case in the series to date in a very satisfying way. Totally awesome.

On a different note: Advance Wars next week!

I thought Trials and Tribulations ended a bit weakly since it cut to too many useless, silly characters and nobody really knows what happened to Godot and others. It just ended. Not much of a wrap up. And Apollo Justice seems to continue it a bit, so I doubt Phoenix's story has ended.

SO YEAH...
Recently bought myself "Advance Wars: Days of Ruin" since I've skipped out on the other titles except the first one that came on the GBA.

I have to say it's an extreme jump from back then to now. Rather dark with some bits of "epic" feeling to them. Nothing like rushing in with bombers, biplanes, and Copters while finishing them off with mechs, battleships and carriers.

I also like how they have a map editor available for the start and have some options to play it against a friend even if he/she doesn't have a copy of AW:DoR via trading back and forth in person. I haven't tried to see if it has wi-fi just yet, but that's bound to get more interesting if it does.

I live in Rhode Island and the only place that had any was one of the Wal-Marts near my apartment. I live about 20 minutes away from 5 Gamestops too. They had jack shite. Most of the top games are sold out in every store here too.

Oh yeah has anyone here ever played Lunar Knights? It's made by Hideo Kojima who made Metal Gear Solid. I've played about 3 hours so far...it's an awesome anime style, overhead action-adventure rpg. Def check it out.

Picked up AW:DoR yesterday and am impressed with it. I've played AW before and have always found it a solid game experience, though at times the cutesy graphics got old. The newer, darker, grittier feel of DoR is a welcome change to the game.

I am loving the WiFi battle mode, a game function that was a given, considering the capability of the system. Which is not to say I'm any good at it, but I still enjoy it. I'm just glad that they didn't hold your hand and limit you to playing against friends only, like PokéMon. I like the random, world wide battles.

It's because the DS, like the Wii, is a handheld targeted at non-gamers and younger gamers (there are very few kid-oriented games on PSP), and it's cheaper than the PSP as well. It's the perfect system for someone who's not good/interested enough to play more action-oriented games but has gotten bored with reading on the train to work.

Not sure, but the scroll on G4 said that there were rumors of a "cobalt blue" color coming in, so that would explain it. Honestly, I'm surprised Nintendo didn't do a blue color on the Lite in the first place.

I picked that up a few days ago as well.

I always enjoy a good Advance Wars. (See sig.) And while I miss the old characters, I am enjoying the story line and I am finally accepting the changes. I really couldn't see them tacking on more storyline to the old plot.

Still, I feel the last entry, Dual Strike, felt a little more complete overall. Save for the WiFi game, it seems like the old one just had more. More CO's, more unlockables, more variety in the gameplay. And I ain't too happy the CO powers got totally nerfed.

So, how many of you own an R4? According to one guy, at least fifty or so people that posted in this thread should answer "yes" (that's a rough estimate, don't go using math to point out the exact number).

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=181131

Now, assuming that there are about 30 million DSs and DS Lites out there in North America (Wikipedia only lists "the Americas", meaning it includes South America in as well...), that would mean that the company that makes the R4 has sold about 25 million of the things.

That's pretty damn good for something that I never even heard of until recently. I'm pretty up on DS stuff, being a giant fan of the handheld, and while I've looked into homebrew a little, I don't think I've run across any real mention of the device in question.

So, really shitty research, poorly done surveying, or just pulling numbers out of their asses?

Drack

R4 is but one of many devices for that function. And not many DS owners have a flash cartridge at all. Maybe 3-5%.

I just got back to playing my "old" games on my DS, which are mostly largely unfinished. I love Final Fantasy - Chocobo Tales. It's incredibly simple, but with great charm and the Final Fantasy universe, it sure manages to win me over. Super Mario 64 DS is also great fun, starting all over again.

That doesn't bother me much, really. I didn't even notice that the CO powers were gone till last night. It feels like they're allowing you to do more with less. not letting you rely on the magics of anime inspired CO poses to win the battle.

In addition to trying a few things before I buy them (comparing Jam Sessions to Hannah Montana: Music Jam before dropping the money was especially helpful...) and getting some games I just couldn't find through legitimate means (Electroplankton), the homebrew scene is awesome.

Anyone who hasn't tried it yet, go get Colors! from somewhere -- it's especially neat on the DS's screen.

If the DS emulated well, then how could Nintndo charge $40 a game? And then how would that effect PSP sales? Everyone gets them for emulation. If the DS did emulation better, then the PSP would lose pretty much the only thing going for it.

Since you're iffy about it, you can try and download a demo of it at any store with a DS download station. I've tried it once. The controls take some getting used to, that much is certain.
