Professor Layton is awesome.

Everywhere I go I hear about this game. I know you say it is awesome, but is it really that awesome? I'm very intrigued by this game.

*update* I now have a functioning DS.

I don't know why this game didn't get a thread. It's easily my favorite DS game.

If you don't know what it is, it's a puzzle adventure game on the DS developed by Level 5, the same people that made the Dark Cloud series, Jeanne D'Arc, and Dragon Quest VIII. You play as Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice, Luke, as they visit the village of St. Mystere to unravel the mystery of the Golden Apple, which is the key to the dead baron's fortune.

During your investigation, you'll be bombarded with brainteasers from everybody in town, as well as many other objects that remind Layton/Luke of puzzles to tell to each other. It's done in a sort of 7th Guest style, except puzzles are generally minor, and you don't need to solve all 135 to beat the game. The plot is wonderful, the art style is quirky, and the music is very reminiscent of Dark Cloud 2 (accordions, violins, and piano). There really wasn't a thing I didn't like about the game.

Overall, it took me ~21 hours to complete every puzzle (not including the weekly downloadable puzzles), over the course of three days. I'm rarely able to play a game for three hours straight, let alone nine, but I couldn't put this game down.

Buy it if you haven't already. It was only like $35.

I need more Ouendan on the DS. I picked it up after not playing it for awhile about a week ago and I need more.
There's Moeru! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 and Elite Beat Agents.

Edit: Also osu! (http://osu.ppy.sh/).

I just finished playing through Professor Layton today.

I beat all the normal puzzles, but haven't tried many of the bonus puzzles yet. It was fun, but I found it leaning a bit on the easy side. That's not to say it was easy, but more often than not I would be able to solve the puzzles fairly quickly. These easy ones though were primarily simple logic ones, ones that could be solved by writing down a couple equations and solving, or by having a good spatial intuition. However, there were also some head-scratchers that I wouldn't have gotten for the life of me if it weren't for the hint system. The story was also pretty good, and I felt the videos and voice acting was used tastefully and added to the game.

All-in-all, definitely recommended; I will be picking up the sequel when it comes out.

The Penny Arcade guys apparently are pretty frustrated at the difficulty of Professor Layton puzzles. I guess it's typical for non puzzle gamers.

Also, I find myself stuck with Advance Wars Day of Ruin in my DS at all times again. I always keep thinking I'm going to hate the next Advance Wars but end up playing it all the time. I love the quick and easy online play, but I hate how you can't buy stuff and stock up on insane powers like with Advance Wars DS.

I thought it was a tad on the easy side. There's touches of new gameplay but much more of the same old. The characters are really written and the sprites convey emotion well. I play it for the case-solving and the story. If you're not dying to play it for the those then you could hold of I'd think.

I went ahead and got it anyway, since I was there to reserve Brawl and had some extra credit.

Also, about the ending of Phoenix Wright 3: the game was, throughout, entertaining. However, at the end of the fourth case and the very beginning of the fifth case I really thought the whole thing would just fizzle out, which was disappointing to me after all the hype about how well it concludes the series. Safe to say, though, that the last case progressively blew my mind again and again. My conclusion is that there is no reason for anyone to avoid playing all three of those games. Together, they are nigh unto perfection.

I don't think most Phoenix Wright fans would agree it was close to perfect. There is some gap in quality between the silly/totally-useless filler episodes to the most dramatic ones.

PW3's final case was great, except the very end just went around in circles with Godot a bit. To me, Apollo Justice is nice because it tries to deviate from the main characters. I think the gameplay really has nowhere to go at this point though. I still think the final case in Phoenix Wright 1 was how it always should have been. Challenging and you actually needed a bit more investigative skills than usual.

I just finished Apollo Justice, and I can't believe that I'm about to say this, but there was a GameFAQs review that got it right: "This is still Phoenix's story."

The storytelling continues to be top-notch, though I must agree with whoever mentioned a quality gap between certain cases (the middle cases, as usual, are not quite as good).

The new characters are all very cool, and Trucy is especially endearing (and not nearly as annoying as Maya).

So, I'm looking to pick up a good, deep, engrossing DS game.

So far my options seem limited to Layton and Days of Ruin. Advice? Layton seems cool, but I think the puzzles may annoy me after awhile. I'm worried that Days of Ruin will get difficult to the point where I will become frustrated and quit.

Suggestions?

So, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Worth it or not?

I didn't even know it was out, honestly. I sort of liked the Gamecube one, but getting together with the gang and having charged GBAs and link cables was sort of iffy. We did it, of course. We managed several nights scattered over a few months to playing it.

But with reviews going all over the pace, and a lack of WiFi multiplayer, I have to wonder if it's worth getting at all. I doubt that my friends will get it as well, and while I did buy Mario Kart and a few DSs for my friend so we could all play, I doubt that will work again (as well as being rather expensive).

Anyone got it, and if so, what's your opinion on getting it?

I bought it on a whim. Nice music, okay gameplay. The combat's good and fast, as long as you use the main character. Everyone else is completely combo-less. The switching between party members to solve puzzles can be a bit of a pain sometimes, especially when it's one right after the other. Maps are a little vague, (save points don't show up on them and you can only view one room map at a time), but still workable. Story's cute, voice acting's decent, I could have done without the annoying dialects, though.

All in all, a pretty good game. Sorta reminded me of Rune Factory in a few ways. Dunno what it's like for multiplayer yet, though.

Don't forget to mention that the AI in Crystal Chronicles is pretty much useless. I just beat the game yesterday and was pretty satisfied. The "+ game" afterwards ramps up the difficulty and changes the drops that enemies leave behind, making the not-too-complex crafting mechanic a bit more addictive. If nothing else, it's definitely worth your time as a rental, don't miss this game because the GC game was balls without 3 friends and a lot of patience.

If I didn't have the Lite and it weren't so glossy it might not be so bad, but my system isn't purdy now!!! :'(

I have it. So far I've gotten through 2 chapters. The action (mostly hacking/slashing) is neat. The rest is mostly fluff. The pre-rendered backgrounds look neat, but since you can't really interact with them, they're just kinda there. I've never been a fan of pre-rendered backgrounds. Talking to other characters is sort of generic, but I didn't really expect much there anyways. Platforming is kept at an absolute minimum. So far, I've only battled on large, flat areas. Not sure what else to say about it.

I think I need more time with the game before I pass any real judgment on it. I'm still waiting for it to get exciting. I hope it does.

It's well worth completeing, even if wondering around outside is so...blarg the world is too huge with very little direction in some ways. I had trouble finishing it too, and decided to just use a guide to show me where to go on the overworld.

The puzzles in the dungeons are very enjoyable though, and the end was nice...although it drove me mad for a few days because the game ends, but in a way the story is left wide open and unfinished.

I shall give you my impressions with much haste in the PSP thread once I get the game sometime this week(ordered it from Amazon along with the others), but suffice to say that I loved the hell out of MMX, and being that it's relatively unchanged I think(gameplay-wise), in 3D, has anime cutscenes, remastered music, and now you can play as VILE, I'm sure it will rock out loud.

You can grab it new off Amazon for $15. In fact, Amazon is probably the best place to grab PSP stuff right now save for new releases and the like. Gamestop has almost nothing for it.

Although in terms of better remake, I think MM: Powered Up is more of a winner, but then I'm a goober who likes that kind of crap.

Edit - Wow! My Megaman Powered up and Castlevania stuff already got here. No Megaman X yet I'm afraid(shipped separately). Should be here tomorrow though.

However, I shall give impressions on the first two either tonight or tomorrow. Huzzah!

Same as Megaman X with story, anime prequel, and playing as vile, with nice beefed up tracks. If you loved Megaman X, You'll love this one.

I grabed The World Ends With you and I can finaly say that this is an original RPG game in a while. I love this game, the game play is fast paced and keeps you on your toes. Very sweet stuff, you get pins which have different attacks, some pins might just conflict with other pins when trying to use them though, so be careful of your combination of pins. The top character does not get pins, you just have this input of the bottom screen on attacking, you can press left or right a bunch of times, or mix it up and go up or down while in the combo. There is a reason for changing this up as well, you acquire a card to do this sort of dual team attack thing, yet you must pick the correct card in the right order to get the dual attack.

There's a lot of continence to this game. You can save whenever you want. Eventually, if you die on a boss or a creature, you can just escape, or retry, not having to go through another stupid long cut scene every time. There is no random encounters, you just simply search for enemies when you want to. More fun things they add is the ability to make your level go lower than what it can be. This sounds stupid, yet it lets you have a much better chance at picking up items and other useful things.

The music is great, fits the mood perfectly. Have not beat it yet, but the story is pretty cool so far.

There is a few downsides to this game, getting pins to level up take either Shutdown PP (You get it for how long your DS is off.) or Mingle PP (You get this from scanning for DS's that are on wireless). You can just get a friend to have his DS on pictochat and keep raking in pp, yet I'm not sure if your pin will evolve another way if you get more Shutdown PP. Eating to get stats up is also a pain, as you can only eat so much in the game for one full normal day (24 hours) Oh, and it takes an insane amount of concentration to play both the top and bottom screen.

Yet all in all if your an RPG fan, or loved Kingdom Hearts for the GBA but hated the card system, this is for you.

Maybe it's just my love of J-Pop, but the game just might have one of the best soundtracks of the year so far. I'm sure GTA4 will blow it away in that department but it's great so far.
Is GTA4 licensed music?
Doesn't count...

But yes, finally some J-Pop in the West!

I'm kinda hitting a DS lull right now, maybe because i've been doing so many mixes. :/

I picked up the new advance war game and kindof got bored; i think maybe i'm just advance wars-ed out. Right now the only game that really appeals to me that i've heard of is the FF4 remake, though I am pretty certain that i'll play the hell out of it.

The World Ends With You sounds really good actually, almost all of those features appeal to me, since I play tetris via wifi, turn my DS off, and also LOVE LOVE LOVE to multitask. I think the character designs are kindof ugly, but if the game is fun, it's fine.

Even then, the comedic original music and themes and radio too.

The World Ends With You just doesn't let up with the cutesy J-pop. Reminds me of Jet Grind Radio in that aspect.

A DS Golden Sun game coming in the future? We can only hope so.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=133982

I would love to see Golden Sun DS. I really got into both games on GBA. They didn't really break much in the way of new ground for RPGs, but they were fun and enjoyable.

Personally, though, I think I'd like to see a greater emphasis on alchemy in any new games, and less on the Djinn. Having to collect ingredients to transmutate elements to make and upgrade weapons, making precious gems from rocks and turning beavers into gold...yeah, it'd kick ass.

I just got The World Ends With You, and it's amazing. First of all, a Square RPG that has a completely original storyline? Awesome. Second, the combat is fiercely good, and completely original -- I find myself trying new things almost every fight.

A question for the others who have it though: How much leveling is necessary? For the first three days, I killed every monster on every screen...which now in Day 4 seems crazy. I currently have all pins mastered except for the ice one, which is at level 3. Am I on pace or way ahead of the curve?

Leveling up is really up to you. It increases your bravery and helps you digest food, but isn't suuuuper necessary to completing the game. If things are going to easy, just slide the level slider down, increasing the difficulty, drops, and awesome factor.

Yeah, so CoroCoro magazine in Japan had it's new article announcing a new Pokemon game for the DS leaked, and it's looking like we got our third version already. Platinum will feature some new stuff, almost entirely cosmetic, and will sell a million copies on it's first day in each market it's released in.

http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml

Blurry scan, but it's enough to make it seem legit. Expect more (and clearer) scans as the week progresses.

I might get it... I've never bought any of the 3rd versions before, and it might be good to upgrade to the eventually better version with wi-fi Underground support.

Still not buying into the whole "Gold/Silver/Crystal remake OHMYGOD!1!!!#" rumors, though.

It's not that fast, a two year hiatus is fairly on par with the third games of the other releases. Weird to think about it like that though, D/P does still feel pretty new.

Wow... I am seriously impressed with The World Ends With You. I mean, I know I should be going through the story, but the battles are just so damned fun. This game really takes the DS functionality to a serious high. I'm also really digging the atmosphere. Bravo, Tetsuya Nomura and Jupiter. Bravo.

I've played the first two chapters of Ninja Gaiden, and I'm a little underimpressed. From what I've seen, it's almost all constant battles, with next to no "platforming" (jumping puzzles, cool agility things, etc). Not terrible, but not great either.

The combat's pretty good though, so if that's what you're all about, by all means give it a shot.

A friend who usually just likes to go through RPGs for the story and gets bored of the grind pretty quickly has actually been playing The World Ends With You more to battle than anything. Pretty impressive, considering the game doesn't force you to grind right?

They have a Dragon Sword demo that seems to come and go on the Nintendo Channel, which would be a good way to check it out if it's on there currently. Otherwise, just try going to like a Game Crazy and if they have a used copy they usually let you try it out before buying it. I played through the demo a little while back, and it was pretty enjoyable for what it was I thought. Just from the demo, I agree with BardicKnowledge that it seems to be just fighting, which I'd imagine could get boring after too long.

Any advice on beating bosses on Hard in TWEWY? I can't get some of those reports, even if I crank my level high. Specifically, fighting (Beat) is terribly difficult for me and I don't know why. Any advice on pin setup etc would be helpful.

Also, how do I get the 5th and 6th pin slots? I think (haven't played for a week now) I'm still stuck at 4.

Thalzon

You need to buy the extra pin slots in certain shops in the game. I can't remember which.

But for Beat on Hard, I recommend mastering a strong healing pin, and using the ice tower one. The Ice Tower can stop him dead in his tracks, which gives you a second or so to switch your attention to the top screen and give Joshua some attention so he stops getting his ass kicked.

Also, if you want a really easy time of it and don't care about post-battle prizes, crank your level up to its maximum before the fight.

On the topic of TWEWY, is there a general scheme to determine how certain pins will evolve? Like for example, pins you can buy evolve through shutdown or mingle PP while pins you get through events or battling evolve in their own ways, etc.

Anything like that? 'Cause seriously, I don't want to have to go through a damned Wiki chart every time...

Right now, the best thing for you to do is to start jacking your stats like crazy. Items like the Viper Drink (Att +6) [at the Shibu Dept Store], Royal Jelly Q10 (HP +40), and Mako Sinnergy (Def +6) are your friends.

Before you can stock up on these super items, you'll want the Ultimate difficulty sticker from Shibu-Q level 3. This one's tricky because Adamantites and Orichalcums are nigh inaccessible to someone without the ultimate difficulty.

What you'll want to do first is to go to the first chapter and fill up on Rare Medals and Tektites, which can be had from the crows in the area behind Hachiko. Get about 10 of each. find an area with a bunch of Shrew Waves (Week 3 Day 5) and beat them on hard with a pin drop multiplier of 20; this'll get you the adamantites. Get six of them, then head over the Shibu-Q Heads floor 3 and trade in the adamantites for the Orichalcums. After that, you should have all the ingredients for the Ultimate sticker.

Now you can go back to the first chapter and whack the porcupines there on ultimate for adamantites, which are vital for the items. All other ingredients can be bought at the Shibu Dept. Store herb place.

While collecting adamantites, make sure you're eating as much regular stuff as you can. [B]If you have three spare scarlitites, I'd suggest getting the Hollow Leg sticker from the Shibu-Q Heads BEFORE YOU GET ANYTHING ELSE

THIS IS KEY TO GETTING WHACK STATS

Oh, and get a healing pin, like Thalzon said.

Also, how do I get the 5th and 6th pin slots? I think (haven't played for a week now) I'm still stuck at 4.

The stores with Extra Slot stickers are as follows: 104 Building-Edoga the Shop, and Shibukyu Main Store-Dragon Couture

Okay, so I bought The World Ends With You about a week ago... I am incredibly happy with it - both with its gameplay and soundtrack.

The story is, well, I guess I didn't expect much anyway. Neku (is that the protagonist's name?) was a total dick, of course, but now that I just got to week two I'm beginning to LIKE him, at least in comparison to Joshua. I actually expected the game to end after Shiku (again, is that her name?) Day 7, though, with only the prospect of a New Game+ or something to keep me going, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much about getting twice as much (at least?) gameplay out of it.

I am still terrible at managing both screens... playing on Hard is downright ridiculous, especially when trying to learn Josh's slightly altered controls. Then again, I usually play at level 1 as well, so that helps make things rough.

Anyway, I totally want the IABW + TWEWY soundtrack... I think the CD releases later this month?...

So unless Nintendo is holding back a new DS in case Sony does something absolutely amazing at their conference, I can't see new hardware happening anytime soon.

Ooh, a DS thread bump!

I played my DS like crazy while on vacation, playing The World Ends with You, Final Fantasy III and Children of Mana. My thoughts:

TWEWY was amazing. Easily breaks into my top 3 DS games, behind Elite Beat Agents. I'm going to pick up the players guide sometime to help me finish the "game after the game." I highly recommend it to all hardcore gamers, yet I'd tell casual gamers to stay far away because it's too hard and too different for the average gamer. "NEO-TOKYO WTF?"

FFIII is just OK. I miss controlling characters with character. I was playing through with a guide (cuz I got one for free), and I never realized how unhelpful and inaccurate most guides are. I constantly said things like, "The map doesn't actually look like that," "This room doesn't connect to this room" and "Why does it not tell me that a dragoon takes off 5000+ damage off the boss while everyone else takes off 200?" Not very helpful, especially considering most people spent $17 on it.

Children of Mana was a pleasant surprise. It turned out to be kind of like Diablo II because you hacked and slashed your way to treasures. Many many many optional sidequests. Magic was pretty useless though. The biggest problem was the horrific storyline written by a third grader. "O P.S. I'm not really the bad guy. All that crap I was doing to you earlier should be discarded. Go kill the real bad guy." A fun rental, but not worth owning. I beat it (much to my relief) after about 18 hours, after I quit doing side quests and just charged through the main quests.

Still no word on Fire Emblem DS outside of Japan, right? I have very high expectations for it. If Fire Emblem DS improves Fire Emblem GBA in the same way that Advance Wars DS improved Advance Wars GBA, it should be an amazing game/series.

if youre just looking for a slot 1 solution than the r4 is cheap and ridiculously easy to use (my 11 year old sister has one and loves it)

I didnt think The World Ends With You was THAT easy, I thought the bosses put up a great fight (and a long one too sometimes in harder difficulties) but yeah, maybe youre just talented? haha

I've seen stacks of The World Ends With You around stores. Also, if all fails, online is the way to go. Also, as for the difficulty, of course it's a bit easy-ish. Typical of Square games and actually most JRPGs nowadays. But you can still scale the difficulty so that you can die with a few hits.

With any luck Sonic Chronicles will be good, sadly I won't be able to buy it till long after everything has been discovered about it.

I guess at least by then though I'll know if it's any good or not. :p

From all indications it's going to be the second coming of SMRPG and I wonder if that kind of insane hype will be good. But the developers are amazing, so I'm waiting for a game review (preferably GameTrailers or IGN) and if it gets a slate of 9.0's I'm getting it.

Also I LOVE how they're adding in multiple response trees like with most Bioware RPGs and I hope it even has multiple endings. I love how they say you can act like a total asshole with Sonic. It's about time.

Um, last time I checked, you could save. Not only that, the game prompted you to save when you enter each new era. Failing that, why not close the lid on your DS to conserve power (although that obviously doesn't work if you want to play something else mid-game).

I said it would be too hard for CASUAL gamers, and by that I mean people who play video games very rarely. Like my girlfriend. If you go to a video game music site on a nearly daily basis, you are probably not a casual gamer.

As for Civ Rev, I totally don't understand how you can't save. Last I checked, it was "press start, choose 'save game'." If you're still having trouble, I'll post step-by-step directions, because it's too sweet of a game not to play it. Very highly excellent portable game. The plot is a little artificial, and it'll be a while before Neku is a sympathetic character... like at all... but there are delicate intricacies behind it all, most of which begin bubbling in the second week and rise to the surface in the third. There are even many details you won't truly grasp until after you've "beaten" the game and work through the endgame, so if you're still on day 2 definitely don't give up yet.

Re: the battle system. I played through the whole game without ever using the top screen, except when it was required. Only after beating everything did I bother trying to coordinate both screens at once. The bottom screen is easiest if you take some time to experiment with many different pin types and find the ones that work for you, then try to stick with similar ones. It probably took me most of the first week to really get used to it, because it is pretty different, but again, stick with it.

Actually, the DS doesn't handle N64 games very well at all. Mario 64 DS had to be redone from the ground up. Lots of people seem to think that the DS is a portable N64, when that couldn't be farther from the truth. It's a bad comparison.

While there are games that are visually equivalent to the N64, the two have very different hardware.

NES, SNES and Gameboy games, sure... but anything else is going to require massive reprogramming or complete redoes to make it work.

I just bought three DS games during GameStop's buy 2 get 1 free sale this weekend. I bought Disgaea, Trauma Center 2, and LEGO Indiana Jones for $48.xx. (All originally $24.99)

(I work at the GameStop, so as soon as some crazy person traded in Disgaea, my manager put it in the "hold" drawer knowing I'd want it without me even being there.)

I finally removed Civ Rev to put in LEGO Indy (so I can finish it and return it within 7 days to buy used Okami Wii instead) and it's a pretty fun little action game. The LEGO games are so great for little kids because it has great action and decent problems to solve without having too much violence or text. And while I'm sure an 8-year-old would love finding everything and getting to 100% completion, I'm planning on just playing through it once and getting rid of it, just so I can say I've played it. (INDY series is not my favorite)

I'm still super stoked I found a used Disgaea DS only 4 days after it came out.

A lot of people I know who do this only download games they wouldn't have bought anyway. In those cases nobody loses money and nobody gains money. I'd say the portion who download everything are the actual problem. And frankly, people who download games aren't going to care if you're angry on the internet, so why bother?

I've been looking for an R4 for a while now (I'm a fan of home brews and the possibility of apps for my DS, like a very limited MP3 player), but they're really expensive where I live.

As for the pirating:
Having a ROM of a game isn't the same as having the game. Tetris DS is fun and all, but having the actual cart is amazing, even if for bragging rights. And honestly, if you only try it out but wouldn't've bought it anyway, then what's the point of downloading it if you knew you weren't going to buy it? That kinda seems like downloading something just because you can, and not because it's something you can't normally do.

Yeah, personally I don't understand taking away desirable functionality and replacing it with not-so-desirable functionality, unless there's a whole new DS demographic out there that I'm not aware of.

I use the GBA slot for all kinds of games, so it's pretty ridiculous that they're doing this. I think they're only going to confuse average consumers, especially those who buy games that require the GBA slot.

I'm also tired of seeing Nintendo jump on various bandwagons, almost reluctantly, then doing a half-assed job with things. I'm talking peripherals, online functionality, whatever.

I could see myself buying a DSi at some point in the future, since I still have my original brick DS. But the people who bought the DS Lite are getting royally screwed over.

In general though, this hardware revision nonsense needs to stop. How many versions of each system do we have?

Is it so hard to believe that some people would rather get a bigger screen, smaller form-factor, music player, camera, and DSiWare than the ability to import their Pokemon? It's the same type of deal as the GBA Micro, which didn't do that well, but it still had a niche market.

Launches November 1st according to the pic.

I'm not getting one. Even if I hadn't just preordered a Pandora, I wouldn't replace my Lite with a DSi.

GBA games are *still* being developed! I wouldn't call this an upgrade over a lite; it's more of a sidegrade.

Edit: Also, what about things like the Opera browser, or the Guitar Hero DS game, which need something inserted into the GBA slot? Or pokemon imports? Or that rumble pak? There are plenty of DS games that use the GBA slot.

GBA games are still in develpment but are so few and far btween that it doesn't matter much to Nintendo anymore it seems. The DS is their main platform and want to focus on improving it. Yea it cripples some game but honestly the GB Micro was a much better GBA player. The Opera browser won't be missed much seeing as DSi has a built in one. People with pokemon imports should already have an old DS to use. By the way the DS games have been selling I am sure everyone who wanted to import their GBA pokemon have done so already.

According to the DS/Wii/GBA portal gbatemp.net (http://www.gbatemp.net/?showforum=102) a new GBA game hasn't been released since April.

I don't see the point in the DSi really. I think it is for people who just want cool gadgets, but for the gamers the DS Lite is the way to go. I mean, come on, I know they stopped releasing GBA games, but they took out the GBA slot.... WTF is that?

TWEWY was amazing. Easily breaks into my top 3 DS games, behind Elite Beat Agents. I'm going to pick up the players guide sometime to help me finish the "game after the game." I highly recommend it to all hardcore gamers, yet I'd tell casual gamers to stay far away because it's too hard and too different for the average gamer. "NEO-TOKYO WTF?"

By all means don't. Reccommend it to ANY gamer, or just about anyone who owns a DS. I'd only heard about it recently when i seen a Wikia portal about it and thought, "Right, this is the same team that done the Kingdom Hearts GBA game (which i don't have myself, but a few friends thought it was great), and Tetsuya Nomura done the characters, so why not?" and proceeded to order it off Amazon. Mainly because none of the game shops around here had actually heard of it.

So yeah, i thought it was a great game. It made me stop playing FF4. I'm still playing it, trying to get all the pin drops on all difficulties and all the secret reports, but it's a great gaming experience and I don't have a bad word to say about it (except the sometimes misreading touch commands). If you really enjoyed Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and are into any S-E titles at all, you will definitely enjoy it.

Hey guys, I've been thinking of getting a new shell for my Lite, but I've seen a dozen different sites with varying reviews (from fair to shitty) of the sturdiness of the shells.

Has anyone here done anything with shell replacement and/or know a place that sells good shells?

I'd say www.dealextreme.com.

I've ordered stuff from them before, so I believe that they are reliable, though the main reason to order stuff from there is that everything they have is CHEAP.

Just make sure to read the reviews, because some of the stuff is really cheap for a reason.

Also, make sure to pick up a tri-wing screwdriver, or you wont be able to get into your ds.

Unrelated to the current line of discussion, but Civilization: Revolution DS is awesome. It's the perfect portable Civ game. Can be played in little increments, takes only 1-2 hours per game (tops), challenging, varied gameplay.

Recently picked up a copy of Dragon Quest Monsters. Been playing it for hours at a time, great game, excellent graphics for a DS game too. You either like it or you don't but I wouldn't call it a 'pokemon clone' as some reviews have.

Pokemon should be more 3D and be in 3rd person also 3D battle system, adventuring would be so much more fun! Pokemon clone though? I think not, but it is the Pokemon of Dragon Quest.

You either like it or you don't but I wouldn't call it a 'pokemon clone' as some reviews have.I'm going to let you in on a secret: whenever someone says a game is a "(insert other game title here) clone", they are doing so because it's easier to make the comparison and quicker than a real in-depth analysis. Reviewers don't have lots of time to get into larger games, because they only get a day (if that) to try it out and write up a review.

You also have random idiots that don't have any idea what they are talking about and compare things to what little experience they have with something vaguely similar.

Pokemon should be more 3D and be in 3rd person also 3D battle system, adventuring would be so much more fun! They did. Two Gamecube games, Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. They were not exactly great successes, as evidenced by their (http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=1761&region=All) sales (http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=1770&region=All). It should be noted that those games were made by a different company, Genius Sonority, not GameFreak, the original creating studio, under the Pokémon Company banner.

The games were cited as bland, boring, run-of-the-mill games, which I can attest to, having owned the first and played a fair bit of the second. They tried to do something different with the franchise, and as we all know, that means no one liked it.

There had been hopes that the Pokémon games for the DS would make use of 3D models, seeing how the storage capacities of DS cards are higher than that of GBA carts, and with the much better hardware (which we know is capable of decent 3D, just check out the new Dragon Quest game, the FF4 remake, Moon, and a few other 3D games), we would finally have it. But sadly, it seems that GameFreak is unwilling or unable to make the effort into keeping up with the current market. Sadly, I think this, plus the poor writing, is the series' biggest problem. The art style hasn't rally changed much from the second series, and all we have seen is slight improvements while other games blow us away with lush, detailed worlds.

Speaking of Moon, anyone heard anything about this game? I've really been looking forward to it. It comes out this week, right?

The Damned
01-12-2009, 03:59 AM
So I hear... but there is very little info on the game. In fact, if a site I frequent hadn't made a small mention of it, I would have forgotten all about it.

Now, their last game, Dementium, wasn't that bad. The boss was a fucking bitch (to this day, I still can't beat it... I do everything I can think of, I check the guides on Gamefaqs, but to no avail... ), but the rest of the game was pretty decent.

If Moon is the much better version of Dementium, then I think it will be worth the purchase.

SirChadlyOC
01-12-2009, 04:29 AM
I've heard extremely diverse reviews on Moon so far. Like, either total waste of money, or one of the best DS games available. Nothing in between, it seems. Hmmm...

In a barely related theme, the last game I've been playing on my DS has been "Dokapon" for GBA from 2003. I bought it used from GameStop for $5 after purchasing "Dokapon Kingdom" just to see if there are any similarities.

The game is brutally difficult, especially at the beginning, but I'm still playing it for some reason. If you die, you lose all your stuff. Like, money, equipment, and items. If you die, you can't load an old save point. You go back to the beginning with no stuff, but you keep your experience points.

To make matters worse, the battle system is based on rock-paper-scissors (or Rochambeau) so if you pick the wrong random choice too many times, you'll die. And lose all your stuff.

Supposedly there's some sort of monster capturing mechanic, but it's too difficult to use (despite it being one of the big selling points of the game) and I have yet to figure out how to capture any of the monsters.

I would probably not recommend this game to anyone except other fans of Dokapon Kingdom who want to play a slightly similar one-player campaign. But I still won't stop playing it until I beat it, I fear...:<

Picked up a DSi this weekend, as well as Rhythm Heaven, and also downloaded WarioWare: Snapped.

DSi is really nice - the more Wii-like UI is better IMO, pressing the power button to return to the system menu is really handy, and the cameras work pretty well for what they are. The slightly bigger, brighter screens are nice as well. That black matte finish is an improvement as well. No complaints from the upgrade from the DS Lite.

Rhythm Heaven just gets more awesome the more I play it...I think if somebody liked Elite Beat Agents and/or WarioWare, they'd enjoy that game.

WarioWare: Snapped is...akward. The camera doesn't always seem to work right when doing the initial calibration and is just way too slow between each microgame when you have to position yourself to start the next one, yet no problems during any of the microgames. It's fun, but it's no longer fast-paced like the rest of the series is and is also extremely short. I think the best part, though, is after each "roller coaster," where it shows you the pictures of yourself as you played the microgames, since the pics tend to look pretty funny.

Looking forward to more worthwhile DSiWare games to come out (my reason for buying DSi in the first place), and really hoping they extend the VC to DSi - it'd be really great to transfer VC games from the Wii to play on the go or be able to download GBA games, though who knows if that's gonna happen.

Oh definitely. Probably the best feature besides the redone menu/entire system.
It's great when playing a game during the day and saving to go to the menu and brightening the screen as the day goes into the evening and resuming your game.
Especially when playing Pokemon Platinum.

What kinda router do you have? Linksys WRT51G perhaps? I actually had the prob you're describing with that router, and ended up getting a Linksys wireless N router for my b-day the next day, and now it works perfectly (my old router was dying about once a day lately, so it was time for a change regardless). I tried various things with the old router to get it to work (disable WEP, etc) and still nothing...about the only thing I didn't try was a hard reset to restore the factory settings, which might be a good thing to try if your router keeps giving you trouble.

Yeah, see, I have no idea what model it is. we got it from Telus, and I can't find any model name on it or the box, and I can't find the manual. If we CAN get a new router that works with the plan we've got going with telus, that would be awesome.

I played a demo of Rhythm Heaven the other day, and I have some concerns. Maybe some people who have played the full version can assist:

I noticed that there wasn't much feedback. No scoring, no "300" or anything. At the end of the stage, I got an "just OK" despite only missing one thing. The first time I tried, I missed like 6 things and got a "just OK."

Does the full version have more feedback? High scores? Other types of replay value?

I loved Elite Beat Agents, but I am so far disappointed in RH so far, but again, it was just a demo. Anyone care to give more detailed analysis?

I picked up a DSi yesterday on a complete whim. I was utterly against it in principle but had owned a Fat and a Lite. I traded in my Lite for $70 at gamestop and 5 DS games and pretty much got the system for free. I picked up the blue one along with DQ5. I downloaded brain training off the DSI ware store for free since I have never done brain training. I'm pretty impressed with the revision. Also I was disapointed in DQ5's graphics until I noticed you can rotate the camera.

If it's anything like the GBA game, the characters will give you visual feedback telling you how close you were to the beat. E.g. if you did it right they will smile, if you barely made it they'll look at you funny, and if you totally screwed up they'll fall down or something.

There's no score or anything, but besides your result (I've seen "try again" "just ok" [the biggest range, btw] and whatever the best one is..."superb" or something), the feedback at the end they give you hints at where you did well...not particularly useful. Like Dhsu said, though, during the level itself it gives you some feedback as to how you're doing (the first level is pretty binary so it's not so applicable with that, but is with the rest as far as I've played). The demo is pretty indicative of the game, so if you didn't like that you prob won't like the full version.

Hi guys, there's a little question :

I've got a European DSi so the power supply shows PRI. : 230V~50Hz, and I travel to Canada for two weeks.
Do you think I can plug it in 110 V and it'll work ?
For my PSP, it's written "AC 100-240V", but for the DSi there is only "230V".
Of course it's lower in Canada than on my french island (240) so there's no risk but I hope it'll work ^^

cobaltstarfire
04-11-2009, 04:37 AM
Well, it doesn't matter too much because unless Canadian outlets are shaped the same as European ones I don't think you'll be able to plug anything in.

I know in the US our plugs have flat prongs, but Europe has round ones doesn't it? It's been a really long time since I was there, and all I remember is having to use transformers for everything to work!

So you might want to get an adapter.

I also asked one of my friends that actually knows all that electrical mumbo jumbo, and he says that it probably won't work even if you can plug it into the wall without a way to boost the voltage or something to that effect.

Overflow
04-11-2009, 04:56 AM
Here in Canada we've got the 2 flat prongs as well. You'll need an adaptor for sure, but whether or not you'll need a converter is something to check out at your local electronics store. If I remember correctly, Europe has a much higher energy output, so I had to buy a converter that would lower that output so it wouldn't fry my computer. I'm sure you can buy one that would do the opposite.

SirChadlyOC
04-11-2009, 05:08 AM
GET A CONVERTER. If you get just an adapter, you might be able to charge your DSi, but you'll do permanent damage to your battery, significantly reducing its battery life per charge.

If it doesn't charge, you run the risk of bricking your brand-new system.

Also, US and Canada have the same type of power, so if it says that it'll work in the US, it'll work in Canada.

I'm super paranoid to ask but is the hinge on the DSi a bit looser than the DSlite? Mine certainly is and so was the other unit I tried to exchange it with.

Hum4n After All
04-11-2009, 09:01 AM
If anything that's a good thing.
Because the DS Lite was stiff and was more likely to break.
The fact that the hinge doesn't make that snappy sound when you open it all the way means they probably sorta fixed that problem.
That's what I think.

Thank you very much for all those answers!!!
I already got an adaptor for flat prongs, I am French-Canadian so I'm used with the two systems :).

But this is the first time I have this problem so I prefer ask for some help.

So I found the answer : an old phat DS with a "Dragon" power supply compatible for GBA/DS, as I did last year. It has 100~230 on it.

And yes, as I see in some posts, it seems that only 230V power supply can become too harm so I won't take it.
So bye people !
