Meh -- I'm filling my Sinnoh pokedex legit, but feel no qualms about forcing pokemon to evolve w/o trading them (no one here plays pokemon), or hacking wild pokemon into my game that I'd have to play through shitty Gamecube games to get to otherwise (Lugia, among others). There's the usual rumblings and rumor-mongering, but thus far, no news of a PSP2.

I think that the DS Lite should have had the matte casing instead, and the cameras are mostly worthless. Honestly, if Nintendo is trying to come up with more interfaces for games, they need to try harder.

I recall a time when Nintendo was all "our systems are for playing games, and games only", but I see that only a few years have changed that stance. Mind you, they were also really iffy on online gaming, and they eventually got into it... albeit in a really basic, awkward way.

The DSi is a nice upgrade if you are still rocking the original DS, but if you already have a DS Lite, I feel like the improvements aren't worth the $170.

Of course, I have an original DS and two DS Lites, so I really feel like I'm done with DS systems for a while.

Also, I <3 my GBA games. I just played Shining Force GBA a couple weeks ago.

How are the shop channel, web browsing, and SD card features? Those are the one's I'm really interested in. It would be cool to check a few websites or do IRC chats without purchasing mobile internet or lugging my laptop around everywhere. Also, I imagine the SD card opens up a whole new world when it comes to homebrew stuff, which is always fun.

I'm with you on that. Also, carts being hot-swappable and pressing the power button to return to the DSi menu are really convenient.

In regard to shop channel, well, there's not a whole lot worthwhile there yet, but I'm looking forward to some really good games coming to it eventually. WarioWare: Snapped! is more miss than hit, is really short, and isn't fast-paced but was free for me so I can't complain too much. The only other game I downloaded was ArtStyle: Aquia, which is actually a lot of fun (I've been playing a level whenever I need a break from Rhythm Heaven). They way they have it set up (where DSiWare is basically the only selectable category) makes it look like the shop channel will be expanded at some point to include a Virtual Console category, and at that point it'll be great.

Haven't tried the web browser or anything with SD card yet, so I can't comment on those.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here knows a good way to fix the scratches on the touch screen of a DSLite. I started Chibi Robo: Park Patrol awhile back, but I got like 2 of the other characters before losing interest. I never played the GameCube one so I can't compare it to that.

With all the talk of the DSi, I'm still waiting for the chance to try it hands-on before I even think about upgrading my Lite (a red-lidded one that kind of has a matte body to it anyway). I've give up waiting for GameStop to upgrade their kiosks... :-x

I've been loving the DSi since it came out; the size and camera have been my two favourite bits. Also, having tried both the old (and very terrible) DS Lite browser, and the new DSi browser, I can safely say that the new one is actually decent. Sure its not mind breaking, but compared to the old one (which was lucky if it actually loaded a page at times, even with the memory expansion), its nice to be able to look at some websites on the go without the need for a laptop.

I just wish there were more DSiWare games available!

So I've been wanting a DS for a while. I've sort of been waiting for the Lite to drop in price after the DSi was released, but that never happened, and I just got my tax return so I'm planning to just suck it up and by a DS with it.

The question is, should I get a DS Lite or a DSi? I don't have any version of the DS at all right now, so it's not a question of "upgrading". The DSi costs like $50 more than the Lite and loses the GBA slot (which would be nice to have, but I have a GBA SP that still works fine, so it's not all that big a loss), and adds some cameras, a microphone, and from what I hear a small increase in general quality (bigger, brighter screen, better buttons and controls, etc), plus the DSiWare thing and a slot for SD cards to put stuff (including music, IIRC?) on.

So is it worth it? It seems like the DSi is trying really hard to be an all-in-one type of thing (ie camera, music player, internet browser, etc) but that's not really what I'm interested in. I just want to play DS games. I've heard talk of DSi exclusive games in the future -- does that just refer to DSiWare (which I've heard is generally pretty unimpressive), or what? If the Lite got cheaper I'd pick it up in a heartbeat, but I'm tired of waiting for a price drop that may never happen, and I'm wondering if the DSi is worth the $40 extra it costs.

I haven't had any personal experience with the DSi, so I can't say for sure, but it might be worth it for the upgraded controls. The DS is my favorite game system to come out since the PS2, but the DS lite has very cheap and crappy controls. Way worse then even the original DS and PSP. Awful d-pad and buttons, OK shoulder buttons, and the worst standard start/select buttons I've EVER used in over 20 years of gaming. The DSi seems to fix these problems, so if you are planning to use your DS a lot (I've used mine for many hundreds of hours personally), 40 bucks might be worth it for the control upgrades alone. Think of the bigger screen and other extras as just gravy.

Wow, I didn't realize that the DS Lite controls were quite that bad. I mostly wanted to make sure the DSi didn't have any crippling minor flaws like that. I talked to BardicKnowledge on #ocremix and it sounds like the DSi is the way to go. It's not that much extra cash, and since my SP still works fine the loss of the GBA slot isn't that big a deal.

I've heard it's pretty easy to scratch up your touch screen with certain games, though (Elite Beat Agents -- one I'm definitely interested in getting -- was mentioned specifically). I read back a few pages in this thread and there's mention of screen protectors. Anyone use one? Know specific brands to look for or avoid? Third-party accessories like that always vary hugely in quality, so if anyone has any experience with that one way or another it'd be a huge help.

I use Hori protectors, which have lasted me more than a year so far. I've been considering upgrading to the kind you glue onto the DS to make it scratchproof, for which Zagg and ClearProtector seem to be the main vendors.

I've honestly never had a problem with the DS Lite controls...Mustin has only himself to blame for having ham hands. :< I really prefer the softer controls over the clicky buttons on the Phat. Not to mention the ridiculously powerful backlight is a frickin' GODSEND for GBA games, and you'll be patting yourself on the back when you get that urge to play Circle of the Moon in the car on a sunny day and you can actually SEE what's going on.

To be perfectly fair the DSi pretty much nailed the buttons and D-pad if you like the precision of the clicky buttons without the flatness and annoyingness of the original DS's. Regarding screen protectors:

The brand doesn't matter too much IMO (although Hori's are the best), but I wouldn't advise for any permanent ones. Instead, just make sure to buy a bunch if any go on sale. I use GameStop ones because I get a discount and they're the easiest to find. I scratched my screen protector once playing The World Ends With You, but I just peeled it off and applied a new one. Original screen is still good as new.

Also, make sure you get correctly-sized screen protectors that fit your model of DS system.

o hi there Johnny Lee.

But seriously, that's fantastic. It's quite apparent we have cheap, reliable head tracking technology, and I don't understand why all our games aren't like this.

Anyone thinking about the DSI XL? I have somehow managed to avoid getting a DS all this time, but at this point there are too many games not to. However, one reason I never did is because I recalled how difficult it was to read text on the GBA's small screen. In fact, once I went over to emulation, then looked at the same game on a GBA, I thought "I used to play on this thing?"

Since I am a fan of large screens, I want to give the DSI XL a whirl. I'll probably do that at the Nintendo store when it comes out. Any other pieces of advice?

Yes - DS iPlayer is about the only DSi Flash Card that does not play the NDS backup roms (it can play all Homebrew DS roms and emulate other consoles). There is a good reason for the makers of iPlayer to block NDS roms from running on it - they wanted it to be fully legal to be sold in any store on-line or offline

bullshit

there's no way this thing can be any more "fully legal" than any other flash cart if it's still playing roms

I was excited about Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light

Because I was like

"A brand new, TURN-BASED, FF? Count me in; I love old-school RPGs!"
Having beaten Final Fantasy 1 the most out of any other game in the series, mind you.

But see, my enthusiasm dropped when I learned the main "game mechanic" of 4HoL was that in battles, you cannot select which enemy to attack- the AI automatically attacks the weakest enemy. And the heal spells are automatic- they heal the person with the lowest HP in the party.

Which completely removes any and all strategy with Turn-based battles.

That's when I said "Square, you fucked up again."

I mean, you have shit like RPG maker. It's not hard to make a decent, or even COMPETENT RPG nowadays. But some people find ways....

Anyhoo, I'm playing Contact right now.

Please tell me SOMEONE around here has played it. It's seriously, for me, one of the most thought-provoking and interesting games ever released on the DS, even if the gameplay is not the best (it really is a big ol' grindfest, but being an RPG veteran, I'm used to that).

It's also great in that it has one of THE best soundtracks I've heard on the DS (sorry for the link dump)
Area 51 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM1k2hyX_9c)
Technically Difficult- Army control device (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueQlPlNoFQk)
Habara- Super Department Store (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUV09xdc0ME)
DRAGON AND DRAGON RPG OF THE YEAR ALL YEARS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjrBwZJQuW8)
My personal fav:
Outside Caladoaxa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp73HXr8FA0)
Seriously, this shit is great, and I hope to remix a track or two if I ever get the skill. It reminds me a lot of the Earthbound soundtrack, so if you like stuff like that.

And the story really rocks (right blend of funny and serious), and the stat-building is fun.

I played Contact, but honestly it disappointed me ever so slightly. I found the story really bare bones and ultimately dissatisfying, and most of the boss fights were lame and didn't make much sense.

Well, except the final boss. That was pretty rad.

I did like the whole cooking and exploration stuff, but honestly? The game should have been a dungeon or two longer and done something to string it all together besides a crystal hunt.

EDIT: Oh, and the art style admittedly turned me off. I was looking forward to a whole game full of bright, popping sprites like the Professor and his cat, but then the rest of the game is outline-less!

You know, my previous post has a lot of hate for the then-unreleased Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light...

But my friend, MoogleBoss (http://www.youtube.com/user/moogleboss), says it's a Final Fantasy game made that should especially appeal to fans of the old games from the NES and SNES (like me), and that the combat system is efficient and perhaps cast in a bad light, and everything from the story, to the music, to the delivery is especially 'classic' in style and content.

Rrrrgh, one, I hate being wrong with my preconceptions! (lol)
Secondly, I'm still not entirely sure.

Has anyone played this and can offer up another opinion?

I've played a bit of it, and all I can say is this.

It's Dragon Quest meets Final Fantasy.

Item limits, no aiming (like in groups of enemies), view of foes from the front... just like Dragon Quest.

It's also pretty fun.

FF1 through FF4 all had item limits (they are only severe in FF1 though). No aiming kinda turns me off to the game, though I haven't played it yet.

The "no aiming" is really just to remove an extra button press, as you tend to want to heal the one with the lowest HP anyway. It's dynamic too, so it will heal whoever has the lowest HP at that moment, rather than at the start of the round.

It's actually handy and works in the player's favour often. I've only started, but it feels like there's gonna be lots of abilities and lots of dungeons. It's pretty fun.

Holy crap, the Demon fight in Urbeth was absolutely killer. It was made worse by the fact that there were no save points around (EVERY SINGLE ONE is removed from anywhere you can get to during the event), AND the knight girl is just STANDING there in town being mopey and NOT helping me fight the boss that keeps kicking my ass.

So, should I pick it up tomorrow when I go on my day 'round the city?

I've played more, and I'd say, "only if you like old-school RPGs". Dungeons are all mazes and everyone keeps cooking up dumb reasons to not stick together, which contributes more to the difficulty than most anything else. There's an item limit of 15 per character, including equips, which can spell trouble when enemies just cast status magic constantly.

So it's a challenge, but the difficulty is anything but smooth. Fun game, though.

I'm on a hella SMT kick right now

I beat Devil Survivor a couple months ago and I'm working on Strange Journey (also I'm playing P4 on PS2 and P3P and P1 on PSP but this is the DS thread)

I was going to pick up devil survivor today but best buy only had strange journey so i bought that, thinking it had the same gameplay as devil survivor. I messed up. It seems like it might be good but i was really looking forward to the tactical rpg elements.

Should i keep playing this game and give it more of a chance or take it back and try to find devil survivor elsewhere?

Well, I've beaten Final Fantasy 1 numerous times, so I'm well-used to such conventions, and am a fan of the old FFs.

I guess I better open up my amazon account.

EDIT:

Well I went and ordered it.

I HOPE I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE.

An interesting video is hidden on the European website for The Last Window (UK and Japan-only sequel to Hotel Dusk) that showcases how exactly they achieved the hand-drawn animated style of the characters in the game.

Click on the 'Music Preview' tab, then look for the 'Behind the Scenes' tab in the new menu. :) Enjoy!

I knew that (goodbye Little King's Story sequel...... GRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!), but I thought the publisher would at least still go about and release them here!

Dammit, I really liked Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk!

OH MY HOLY HELL, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO KILL A BOSS IN 4 HEROES.

I have tried fighting both Asmodeus and Leviathan, and both feature a ridiculous difficulty spike the likes of which I never thought I'd need to face.

Asmodeus can nail you with basically any ailment he likes. His physical attacks poison, he can cast blind and petrify, and he's got a skill that confuses, silences, and paralyzes, in addition to sizable chunks of damage. And it only gets worse as the battle goes on.

Leviathan gets FOUR turns per round, his physical attacks can insta-kill, and he casts Thundaga, which can paralyze and hits everyone. He's also got ridiculous gobfuls of HP, and has a total party kill attack.

I thought I was doing alright, upgrading my stuff and picking the best equipment for the battles, but even THAT doesn't save me. I'm losing my mind, here!

Back to the grind?

Yeesh, you probably have to get different armor/magic/crowns set up so you can better withstand their attacks. That's the general playbook for games like this.

I'll have to say that although I'm not too far, I'm really loving this game. Aside from a few times where my healers healed people I did NOT want healed, everything works fine, and i love the old-schoolness, from the story to the layout to everything.
Well, except the item limit. Feel that's kinda gay, but whatever.

I am pleasantly surprised with my purchase, because (as my previous posts in this thread indicate), I was so sure this game was going to blow, hard.

Not to spoil anything, but level grinding is rendered pointless in the second half of the game. All enemies, bosses included, scale to your level. I'm grinding, but for gems rather than exp.

So, SKJmin from GBAtemp has created a patch for New Super Mario Bros. that replaces everything with Super Mario Bros. 3, and then some. Star Coins are hidden in brand new places for each level, new secret exits in some stages lead to cameo stages from other Mario titles, and everything feels extremely polished.

Check the GBAtemp post (http://gbatemp.net/t226778-new-super-mario-bros-3-hack) for the download!

Also, here is a 15 minute (!) trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd2gtBhgwQM) for the game. It's sick -- if your DS is homebrew enabled you need to get this NOW.

Edit: Mods, I'm under the impression that .ips and .xdelta patch linking is acceptable if the host site doesn't also host rom images, yes?

that really does suck that we are not getting the Hotel Dusk sequel. It's one of my favorite DS games. If i remember it was pretty well received, I think someone in EGM gave it a 10. You could always just import the European one. Playasia has it for $50 and NCSX has it for like $68, which is ridiculous. I'll probably end up importing. I remember reading awhile back that at the end of the DS's life span (when 3DS comes out) that they are going to release a bunch of games that never made it over here, in like a last ditch effort to spur interest in regular DS games. Anyone heard any truth to that? I know a couple years ago there was an import initiative at bestbuy (I think?). I remember seeing Jump All Stars, or Jump Ultimate Stars for sale in the states.

Had a lot of fun with this over the weekend. It's interesting how he finds substitutes for all the things in SMB3 missing from the DS game (like some enemies, platform movements and A WAY TO FLY...).

But anyway, it's harder too. The second half of 5-1 kicked my ass about 10x harder that its SMB3 counterpart. A lot has been added to the game; this patch isn't so much of a SMB3 remake as is it a remix.

Looks great, watching the video - I'll try it out in a bit.

At roughly 6:37, though, all I could think was that we created a goddamn album based on that one song (http://hurryffx.kngi.org/), so why couldn't he use any of it?! Gaaah!

So I'm at the big tree in FF Heroes of Light, trying to figure out where to go to heal my teammate who has caught a bad case of the plant.

I don't wanna use a guide because I want to prove my greatness as a gamer.

I will say this though, this is probably the best Final Fantasy I've played since X. Or maybe III, if you count the DS release.

In any event, there hasn't been a FF that's been enjoyable like this has for a loooooong time.
