Hey Pokefans, more info today. Check www.serebii.net or http://pokemonelite2000.com/ for deatils. A new poke, and the full in-game map are revealed. And there are a few new videos showing actual battles, so you can see how the touch screen is used. What was that whole touch screen thing about? Are you going to be able to play dress up with your Pokemon? :?

Well, Connection Tour tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to make a decent attempt in the Mario Kart competition, considering I haven't played for a while.
You should play me beforehand.

Eh, I got owned anyway. Made it to the semis where everyone was Yoshi in the Egg Kart, and came last. Hey, at least I won a New SMB coffee flask and belt for knowing how many Mario Kart games there are- 6!
That's cool. Too bad they don't do the Connection Tour in the US. I'm one of those Egg Cart people.

It's for item management, issuing attack commands during a battle, and what appears to some form of decoration or item use on your pokemon. There isn't any info on that last part. I would expect there to be some more info later this month.

I can see a use for it, the only disadvantage is that WiFi networks aren't as far spread as cellphone networks. It'd be a nice replacement for my cellphone browser(Which also doesn't do flash, video or sound) and it'd make looking up stuff while fixing someone's computer a hell of a lot easier.

It's not a PC browser replacement.

I think he just meant that its not as capable as PC Browsers, which is a given. But as a portable device with a web browser, it still has potential.

Anyway, have they announced a price for it yet in the U.S.? I probably won't be willing to pay more than $20 for it since I have a laptop already. I'd probably use it for things like looking up friend's codes or faqs. If given the chance, I'd probably find other hilarious things to use the browser for.

Not happening. GBA games were never designed for touch screen use, and trying to make some sort of unifying system for converting/adding on such support would be goddamn impossible. You would have to make such a system customized for each and every single game. And I hardly think that anyone would be willing or even capable of doing the programming and manufacturing.

Nice fantasy.

Considering the buttons for GBA games are already there on the console itself, you're looking at some nice redundancy.

Maybe you could sell it to DS owners with defective buttons but a functional touchscreen though :P.

When asked about Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin's wireless features, Iga explained that the game will offer a two-player cooperative mode that can be played either locally or online. Cooperative games will be played on special stages which, although the translation wasn't entirely clear, we're assuming refers to levels different to those found in the single-player game, and the monsters contained therein will vary according to whether the game is online or local because of technical limitations. Also supported locally and online will be a shop mode, where you can buy, sell, and trade items with other players.

Well, I didn't really want to clog the DS thread with my own personal crap that is only mildly related to any topics discussed therein, but I guess that mods like clogged threads. That being said:

I've decided to do a 2-part mod to my DS. I have already taken it apart and put it back together, so I know what I'm getting into (pretty much).

The first part will be easy: I'm painting it. I think I'm going to go with a dark green, and put a Triforce on the cover (doesn't that just spell nerd?). I'll be using automotive trim paint, so I shouldn't have any problems with adherence or the like.

The second part is going to be more difficult. I'm going to try to extend the wireless range somehow. I have noticed that the wireless on the DS is not very good, especially when you're stealing it, Oops, probably shouldn't have said that... so I want to try to improve on this.

The reason for this post is to ask for a little help with the project. First, should the Triforce be a pale yellow (that was all I could find), or should it be gold? My main fear is that gold will look tacky. I'll also take other color/theme suggestions. Also, does anyone here know enough about wireless internet to help figure out how to extend the range? Basically, the wireless antenna in the DS is two leads on a circuit board in the top. Does it improve reception to have the leads further apart? Does it improve reception if the leads have a larger surface area? These are the things I don't know. I've also considered adding a custom connector on the back so that I can attach an after-market wireless antenna.

Does any of this sound at all rational, or should I just scrap the idea? I'm also willing to take others' ideas, so if there's something you always wanted to see done to a DS I'll consider it (nothing destructive, though).

Nintendo DS headset revealed (http://gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=6657)

It's about fucking time. Although, only MPH and, in the future, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam are games that I know of that have/will have VoIP support which will put this accessory to good use. For other games that use the mic, it'll mean less spittle on the screens. At $9 US (or more if you plan to import one), it's not a very risky investment. I have a splitter, so if it has just the one earphone shown in the image instead of two, I'll likely get one.

Pretty lame, I had just started getting into WiFi play again, and now my adapter is all screwed up.

Edit: Great Deku, I would use enamel paint, probably. Best check to make sure that that won't hurt the DS, but most enamels are glossy. A flat green DS might look odd.

I have something to add to this. I went to comic con and saw that Nintendo had a booth. I saw the voice of Mario and the whole bit and they had a bunch of games including Starfox DS and Mario 3 on 3 hoops.

Needless to say, both were amazing. Starfox, you do pretty much everything with the stylus, except the barrel roll :D

Mario 3 on 3 was good too. the controls were easy and it will be a lot morefun playing with people that are real, not computers.

You have to be a serious knob to think the controls were remotely good on either of these games.

Worth mentioning again INDEED. Here I was, just complaining about how gaming news had been so slow and how there were almost no decent RPGs on the DS when BAM!

Hopefully Project:Exile gets off the ground. I want this thing.

Advance Wars DS is still probably the best RPG for the DS, I think, and it came out a looong time ago. Hopefully FFIII will be worth the wait. For a guy who mostly plays RPGs, the DS has been building it's momentum a bit too slowly.

EDIT: Oh yeah, how could I forget? My life more or less revolves around Pokemon Diamond & Pearl. Good to know there's a few fans in the OCR community. I figured you guys would be burning Pokemon fans at the stake by now.

Turn-based strategy game?

Off the top of my head, though, the only "mildly tradition" RPGs that were worth anything were AW:DS and Castlevania DS. There've been some recent tries, like Lost Magic, but they're kinda on the meh side. Also, you have to consider that most genres these days seem influenced by SNES RPGs... sports games incorperate upgradable stats, action games incorperate similarly grandious stories, etc.

My point was, I guess, that right now all the potentially great DS RPGs aren't out yet. Nevermind what constitutes an RPG...

I didn't quite feel like reading over +35 pages of posts so I apologize if I'm being redundant. The new Pokemon games (not the poop that is dungeon rescue whatever) look awesome. Ad-hoc and online play are set to make Pokemon Diamond/Pearl shine like jewels. The localization of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (Retitled: Elite Beat Agents) will be interesting to see considering they've retooled it so much that they may as well call it a sequel. If you're into the J-Rock/Pop the import is good for that. I hope whatever licensed music (if at all) that they have in the English version doesn't suck. According to the informative folks at 1up.com the next Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game will not prominently feature Phoenix Wright. The series will have a new main character taking on the role of ace attorney. If you didn't pick up the first game, good luck doing so now. If you do find it, consider yourself lucky, so make sure to play the heck out of it. So much great stuff to spend money on coming out within the year, so little, little money in my wallet.

I've bought more DS games now than in my entire N64's lifecycle. This thing's amazing I tell you. Didn't the DS also hit 21 mil worldwide recently? 10 mil in Japan, 5 mil in US, 5 mil in Europe, 1 mil other methinks.

Indeed. My DS collecion is nearing my GC collection count. Did the DS ever suck on launch, phew.. what a come back.

I think a River City Ransom DS game would be really good. You could utilize the Wi-Fi technology for street gangs and stuff like that.

Elite Beat Agents IS a sequel. It features new characters and liscensed songs. Livin' La Vida Loca and Walkie Talkie Man have already been confirmed. XD

And yeah, GS4 has a new main character, but GS 2, releasing in the states of Phoenix Wright: Justice For All, still stars the title hero. Plus, the first game got rereleased, so it shouldn't be that hard to find.

What the fuck? Page two? Not on my watch...

Yeah, so Pokemon stuff has been revealed through CoroCoro magazine, and it's something.

First, what appears to be the new starters have been revealed, and one of them is a monkey with a flaming ass. Seriously. Look for yourselves here (http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Image:Japanese_Scan_2006-08-05_02.jpg).

And then we have the online stuff. It's not just battling (although that's been expanded as well). Contests's have returned and been expanded a bit, and there's this whole underground world (http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/More_September_2006_CoroCoro_scans_leaked_to_Inter net) you can play online in. Secret Bases from RSE make up this giant cave system where you can play games like Capture the Flag with other people, and set traps for each other. You can also take part in treasure-hunting, and maybe even more. Looks to be the most feature-filled generation of the series.

Oh, and there's this one pokemon, looks like a parrot, that you can use the DS's microphone to record your own sounds/words, and have it scream it as an attack. Think of how many people will have one that screams "FUCK!" at you in a battle.

Oh, and a Chocobo game (http://ds.ign.com/articles/723/723115p1.html) for the DS. I would like more details, but it's all good.

Just read the article, pretty interesting...especially when they noted that LocoRoco didn't sell (and saying it was like a Nintendo-style game). Seems like many of the avid Sony supporters I see (in the US at least) are graphics whores and don't often care how fun a game is if it's not really pretty (and do often call Nintendo games "dumb" and "childish," and go off about how Nintendo games have "bad graphics"), so it seems like trying to market a game like that on the PSP is trying to market it to the wrong audience. Then again, Katamari Damashi are Sony platform-exclusive and those seemed to sell well, despite not having stunning graphics. Meh, I dunno, just my take on it.

I posted this earlier (like, a day ago at least), but it seems that the post was lost, or deleted... Anyway, I found this (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/4922) video of Star Fox for the DS (it asked me if you're over 18, though I have no idea why. The video is completely clean in all regards. After trying the link though, it seems to work fine, so maybe it's just me). This is showing in-game play using the wi-fi ability. About 1/2 through, you can see the guy do a barrel roll. It certainly looks player controlled to me. Hopefully this is a possible indication that some of the issues people have mentioned earlier have been addressed, and possibly taken care of.

Either way, the game looks pretty good, graphically speaking. At least, for a DS game. I'm certainly looking forward to it, but I think I'd like to try out a demo, if one is available. Especially since I have extreamly limited funds. Anyway, hopefully someone finds this video informative. Mouser X over and out.

Yeah, it seems they changed it so now doing a barrel roll is a scribbling motion left or right on the touch screen.

Which really complicates the controls all the more. The game is going to be a complete mess.

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, but Children of Mana is a excellent game for the DS. I picked it up at Tsutaya's recently (couple of weeks ago) and I just finished it. Been a bit busy. At any rate, I don't know if this is of much use, but i took some pics of the game since I have no idea how to dump screens from the DS.

Ingame, fighting one of the first bosses. Pretty standard use of the dual screens, but convenient and practical.

Once again, in regards to Star Fox on the DS, I just found this (http://ds.ign.com/articles/723/723646p1.html) IGN article. They spent some time on the Japanese version, and said that it handled surprisingly well. Of course, I wouldn't expect you people to blindly accept what IGN said about the game. However, if what they said is accurate, then I think it will certainly be a worthwhile game. Though, I'm definatly going to have to try it for myself first. Hopefully they have it on demo, or something, at the local store here, when it comes out.

Anyway, since I hadn't seen it linked earlier, I thought it would at least be reasonably useful to post a link to the article here. Mouser X out.

I've have a flash cart for my DS so I can run homebrew and roms on it. I've been playing the japanese version of starfox a little bit this week. I managed to complete the training missions even though I cant read any of the text. It's pretty good so far, the actual dog fighting is way too easy though, and there doesn't seem to be any levels where you fly in a linear path like in the SNES and N64 games, which is a shame.
The mario 3 on 3 basketball game absolutely rocks though, I cant recommend that enough.

Both the video and the IGN article pretty much confirm for me that Star Fox Command is really gonna suck. Each new game seems to stray farther away from what made Star Fox 64 so awesome. In that regard, Star Fox is Nintendo's Sonic the Hedgehog.

As with any game, I should reserve my judgement until I try it for myself, but so far the game looks very not fun.

Here's how I invision the Starfox DS game should work:

At the beginning of each mission, you're given a map of the level and use your stylus to draw a path through it. There will be branches, but you're not allowed to backtrack, so you must choose wisely. Although maybe there could be a power-up that lets you change your path mid-level.

Then you enter the mission, flying along the "rail" you've drawn. The controls are the same as the original Starfox, except with the extra tricks added in Starfox64. The stylus won't come into play at all, except maybe with bosses, because they always need some sort of gimmick.

And that's it. Sweet and simple. Don't fix what ain't broke, Nintendo.

The current market has a kindling for RPGs. Given the lack of an AAA RPG on the DS, I'm guessing Nintendo is going to push Pokemon as hard as they can, and then find another RPG to complement it, for the people who dislike pokemon (like myself). This could be Luminous Arc. Or the other one...contact?

Harvest Moon has always been one of the best games, ever in my opinion, because it approaches gaming in a casual, careful and non-violent way, and manages to pull it off with one of the oddest game recipes ever (manage a farm? Atleast at first it was sort of weird). Putting in fighting elements will basically crush the heart of the game, in my opinion.

It's in German or something (damn my weakness with other languages), but if you want to see all the released videos from Pokemon DP, here you go (http://www.pokewiki.de/Pok%C3%A9mon_Diamond_und_Pearl/Videos). They show some footage from the new underground area, which is fucking huge, by the way, and some Capture The Flag action.

About the giant underground place... looking at the top screen of the video, I see that there are solid thick lines that seem to completely enclose areas, and it looks like there's no way to get out of one and into another. In fact, there seems to be a small zig-zag shaped area in the center. I can only speculate that they have each area closed off to prevent people from getting lost or to prevent flooding of one area by lots of players. But until it's out in about a month and a half, who knows?

I've seen Pokemon Red (not the GBA remake, the original) in several stores, and they still have their original release price. I thought it was just some stores forgetting to mark them down because of their age. But then I also saw other games from the same time (roughly, maybe a couple of years or so either way) that had lowered prices. And these are pristine, unopened boxes in major chain stores, not some used ones in an EB. The price tage were recent, maybe a year or so old. I have even once asked the people behind the counter why such a high price for such an old game. They said that something along the lines of "we haven't been told to mark it down."

Now, did he mean Nintendo jasn't told them, or their sections's supervisor hastn't told them?

Incidently, if anyone wants pristine, unopened Gameboy games for $40 CAN, let me know, I can hook you up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNX6jm8V6Tg

Thank you, YouTube.com. A three minute long trailer for Diamond/Pearl, with new areas never seen before, new effects, shots of evolution, trading, and other stuff.

Points of interest:
-A ship going under a drawbridge at 0:35
-Walking under some sort of railway or tracks at 0:36
-The new "Fly" animation at 0:39
-A grass effect when entering a battle at 0:45
-Pokedex features at 1:11
-The new evolution animation at 1:41
-Some footage of the new Contest stuff at 1:51 (including some sort of costume change for the player at 1:52... this is strange. When you enter a Contest, you change outfits? That's new. I wonder if it's just for show, or actually does something)
-The new trading animation at 2:14
-Verification of online voice chat at 2:26
-Footage of some giant mansion at 2:46
-And of course, a Japanese release date and price at 2:55 (September 28th, at 4800 yen
Looks like that graphical upgrade fans have been asking for the last five or so years has finally come through. And the new areas, wherever they are, look very interesting. I haven't felt excited over a new game in quite a few years.

Note: if you hear a sound, like a messaging program bleeping, that's from the video. ISomeone recorded this on their computer. It turns out that the original video was only available for viewing in Japan, as the server it was on rejected addresses from outside the country.

Hey, it's my right to vomit at Disney-themed games that don't actually add anything to gameplay. Kingdom hearts, at least, was an original story (as original as RPGs get these days) with varied settings. I suspect that Meteos: Disney Edition will simply throw a bunch of Disney faces and logos on everything, leaving it almost exactly the same as the original version.

Hence, puke.

Holy! That Pokemon video was awesome! So awesome it's time to speculate!

I noticed there was a section with snow and I wonder if that weather will have an effect on the battles in that area. For example accuracy could automatically be lowered because of the heavy weather. Certain attacks like fly could also be harder to use and/or less effective. That could get pretty crazy. Although I doubt it, that snow could mean that every area could be randomly effected by weather depending on it's climate. It would be an interesting feature, but I doubt something like that is being put into place. Perhaps they will have a season system similar to Animal Crossing. When it's fall in your area it's fall in the game. That could be interesting too. Most likely though it will just be that area that's snowy and none of this will ever happen. :P

The video demonstrated the voice chat. I wonder how they are going to solve language barriers. Maybe they will disable voice chat when playing with someone in another region.

Certain attacks like fly could also be harder to use and/or less effective. That could get pretty crazy.
Rain and Sunlight in RSE had effects in battle. Rain would weaken all Fire attacks and cause Solar Beam to charge for three turns instead of hte normal two, while boosting all Water attacks to cause more damage.

Sunny weather would do the opposite, and make Solar Beam a one-turn powerup and use attack, meaning you could deal out fuckloads of damage over and over.

Both effects were introduced in the second generation, Gold and Silver, but it may be that in Diamond/Pearl, they will also add Sandstorm and Hail effects too. They normally just cause a small amount of damage to most types at the end of each round for five turns. Maybe they could add similar effects this time.

I do recall reading on the game directors blog thingy that he had been toying with the idea of making a more realilistic weather system, with changing patterns and locations. But nothing was mentioned on the subject since, and that was months ago. Who knows? They haven't revealed everything yet, and it would be an interesting feature to have.
The video demonstrated the voice chat. I wonder how they are going to solve language barriers. Maybe they will disable voice chat when playing with someone in another region.
I's sort of possible. There's a feature in the game that uses a globe to show you where your trading partner is located in the real world (each peron is going to be represented by a little flashing dot showing their approximate position, and the game keeps track of everyone you trade with, so you can see where all of your trades have come from), so the system can tell where you are from. But I suspect that there's an option to just turn chat off.

We'll see in about six weeks when it comes out in Japan.

Deep Labyrinth is awesome. I'm having a lot of fun with it. The reviews truly don't do the game justice. Sure it has its flaws, and you can tell it's a port of a cell phone game, but in the same way PSO had its flaws, Deep Labyrinth is addicting as hell (just like PSO).

The touch screen functionality is great, and I really love drawing spell characters in order to cast. It's pretty awesome. Sure there are some things that aren't so great (like the ease of the first chapter), btu overall, I would recommend it. I like it a lot. Great dungeon romp.

Sure it has its flaws, and you can tell it's a port of a cell phone game, but in the same way PSO had its flaws, Deep Labyrinth is addicting as hell (just like PSO).

OK FINE YOU WIN.

You mentioned PSO in the same sentence as Deep Labyrinth. Twice. Now I have NO EXCUSE to not buy Deep Labyrinth. Stupid games and me having to pay my hard-earned money for them.

Toys R Us is giving away Mew (http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Toys_%22R%22_Us_to_distribute_Mew) on Saturaday, Sempterber 30th. If you live in the US, and have a GBA with Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red or Leaf Green, you can show up and they will download a Mew onto your game. This is just like a similar event they did back in 1998 for RBY (from which I still have my legit Mew on Silver). Then when the DS games come out, you can transfer it over.

Hopefully, other countries (hackhackcoughCanadacough) will have the same sort of event in the future. Of course, with the DSs online abilities, we could jsut download such things from our homes, negating the whole hassle of finding a store that is participating.

See, I managed to put something vaguely DS-releated in there.

I'll skip Deep Labyrinth. The reviews have been a turn off, besides it looks a lot like the Elder Scrolls series and for that I have... the elder scrolls series :?

By the way, Starfox command is almost out people. Who's gonna get it? I won't, UE's told me not to. But I will ignore him if reviews sing it high praise. I confess, reviews mean a lot to me, especially Gamespot's and Gamespy's as a confirmation. I've found that my opinion has been more or less the same as the GS reviewer's ones. No harm to you UE or anything about the SFC thing haha.

I think I'll be skipping out on Star Fox too. It just looks like Star Fox 2, the one that never came out. It even looks as easy as it. I beat the beta version of Star Fox 2 in like 20 minutes or something. The only reason I might get SFC is for the multiplayer mode.

Phantom Hourglass is gonna be the bomb.com, but why did they push the release date further away? Wasn't it supposed to come out this year?

Final Fantasy III looks pretty awesome too. You guys should check out its cover-story in October's edition of Nintendo Power. Sweet.
-----------------------
Now, this isn't exactly a game, but do you guys think it would be cool if Nintendo released a set of Office Tools for DS (Web Browser, Word Processor, Email, etc)? I think it would be useful. Then again, why not just buy a pocket PC?

Yeah, I've got it right here. It's on September 30th. Take either Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen to get Mew. Will it work with a DS? Or do you have to have an actual GBA or SP?

I'm excited for Pokemon Pearl and Diamond though. The cards stink, and the show is stupid, but the games rock.

Confirmation accepted. Awesome. Now to just somehow make it to a US city with a Toys R Us... Should only be about a six hour drive. EDIT: make that a twelve hour drive. The nearest store I could find is in Veradale, Washington. And that assumes that they are even participating in the event in the first place... I guess that I am screwed, and will only ever have one by finding someone to trade with on DP, use a cheat device (not my style) or risk mailing my cart to someone in the US who will do it for me...

No, the DS won't work. I suspect that they will do it one of two ways;

1. Either by hooking up your GBA to a Gamecube, like a demo station, or one specificly setup to handle this event, and just download one onto your cartridge.

2. They will have GBAs with special carts in them that download Mew onto your carts.

Either way, you will needa GBA. The DS has no cable port to connect with either a GBA or Gamecube, and the DSs wireless is completely incompatible with the very limited Gamecube wireless (namely, the Wavebird controller, which wouldn't be used for something like this anyways). GBA only, I'm afraid.

I'm excited for Pokemon Pearl and Diamond though. The cards stink, and the show is stupid, but the games rock.Same.

I don't know anyone with Deep Labyrinth yet (portugal remembe?) and renting games is nonexistant here. That's why I trust reviews so much. I gotta, because 8/10 times, the only way I'll get to play the game is buying it. I've noticed that 90% of the times, my opinions match the reviewer's. There are cases where it doesn't of course, but it's usually spot on. And I rarely go for any game below an 8/10. Besides, DL isn't out here yet, and I reserve the importing for major titles, like Megaman ZX. Which I will undoubtedly import. As I said, the resons for me not to get DL are that it's like The Elder Scrolls, only inferior yet portable. And I don't wanna spend 40 euros on the difference sorry :?

LOL, I forgot that Phthisis is the absolute authority on what EVERYONE's tastes must be for games.

No one is attacking Deep Labyrinth, like how you're attacking like everything :P. Enough with your "no one can see beyond 1st party/Square Enix titles but me, so I must enlighten them!"/persecution complex bullshit. Especially here people are aware of the 3rd party titles, so quit your Atlus crusade already. Doesn't matter who makes a game if it doesn't appeal to someone...if people don't care for Deep Labyrinth, they won't but it. You know what else? It's the same thing for Starfox Command, or any other game for that matter. What you're trying to do is what critics do: tell people to buy games cuz you say so, being the high authority you are Mr. ex-contract game tester (not that a pro game designer [or even a critic for that matter] would be any more of an authority).

Lucky for us, there exist DS download stations so we can try out games like DL and SFC before purchasing and decide for ourselves what we like and want to buy. I'm willing to give both a fair try, though they're not even on the list right now and won't be for at least the rest of the calendar year (given all the Wii games I'm getting, plus FFIII and Contact for DS).

EDIT:
Maybe SFC got better after the demo you played...

That's a possibility, one that Phthisis should recognize given that he didn't come in late on a project. He should know all about the different builds that testers have to bug, and how vast the differences can be. Of course, he may just not like the game, which is fine since no one said he HAS to like it :P lol.

I imported the Japanese version. It doesn't really suck.

The controls feel intuitive to me (moreso than Star Fox Assault did). Though it would have been nice touse the buttons for a couple of things, such as boost and brake.

The story is so dependant on your choices that I can't really put an overall opinion to it, but I do not like some of the endings.

It could use more variety, yes, but it is still fun.

But, because I am a big Star Fox Fanatic, my opinion will be dismissed as biased so I don't even know why I bother stating it.

I'm kinda curious how the replacement plan works. A friend bought his DS at Best Buy with the plan so when the black DS lites come out he can just replace it straight across. Is it something you can only do once?
If you can replace multiple times through the plan, I'd say just do it that way (since you'll receive your replacement immediately instead of waiting a few days for it). Either way, though, maybe NOA should be notified so they're aware of the problem (so they know what percentage has that defect so they can fix it for future waves).

I just got the game yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've played for about two hours, mostly just flying around busting up random enemies.

You have two options for controlling your plane: "AI mode" and manual mode; you can switch at any time. In AI mode you basically let your plane do the fighting and flying while you tell it where to go/who to kill using the touch screen. You also control the general altitude and speed using sliders on either side of the touch screen. AI mode is nice to use against weaker enemies because the targeting is accurate but your plane doesn't seem to want to turn very fast, so you should take an active role. The other option is manual mode. Manual mode is regular flight-sim style controls; d-pad works like a joystick, L and R buttons the are rudder, and you still use the touch screen for throttle. The buttons are for guns, radar, and targeting. Landing at a runway is simple and forgiving as long as you have even the slightest idea of how a plane lands :D . Manual mode is generally best, as it is more fun and necessary to beat stronger opponents.

You have a buch of choices for upgrading your plane's stats (speed, weight, maneuvering, armor, power) as you level up. You level up in a fashon similar to (exactly like) rpgs. Kill enemies, get experience based on their levels, and get money, too. You buy better weapons and armor with your money.

When you take off and start flying around, air pirates will randomly show up and you'll want to kill them. Once, a short time after taking off there was a cargo plane that was under attack; I saved it, and when I landed and went to the cafe (you go to the cafe to get information from various dirty-looking people). He rewarded me with some money. I talked to another even dirtier-looking guy and he gave me information about a pirate airfield. I decided to head for the airfield and I also decided to use AI mode. Along the way my plane made short work of bad guys at lower levels, but when I got to the target, the AI had a long dogfight with a high level enemy and then got shot down by the heavy fire from the enemy zeppelin. I'll try manual mode next time.

You can fly wherever you want, but you'll want to stay away from areas with high level enemies. Flying from one area to another can take awhile; the game area seems huge. The graphics in the game are excellent for the planes, with spinning propellers and visible pilots. The terrain looks good from the air but some of the textures (mostly the ones for cities) can be pretty bad up close. The music is not spectacular, but it fits the game perfectly.

There is only one save file, and you lose half of your money that you gained when you are shot down. I haven't played multiplayer.

Umm... that's it so far. I haven't really gotten into the story yet, but I don't care if there is much of one because I am enjoying the gameplay so far.

Wut? How big is the XBL userbase? Then again it is paid. I'd actually prefer a service like theirs to what it has now :?
They broke 2 million (http://www.xbox365.com/news.cgi?id=GGuGLLLLrN07201305) back in 2005. The DS userbase is growing at more than 3x the rate of Xbox Live (2 million in ~32 months vs 2 million in 9 months), so I think they'll surpass XL before the end of the year. :P

Holy b'jesus that was fast! (http://ds.ign.com/articles/728/728959p1.html) It's only been out for like 5 days, that's pretty crazy it has sold that well already.

Star Fox Command scored an 81% at Game Rankings. (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/933009.asp) Not bad, but I still have doubts.

Still, I might consider getting it now.

Looks like Phthisis was right- Starfox's 8.0 on IGN reeks of MK:DD to me in that it wasn't a good game and probably only got that score to lessen the fan backlash.

I trust gamespot the most: 7.5

I can't afford a 7.5 game.
