Meh, I guess its up to the recording labels...

And my very queer yet private side kinda likes Avril Lavigne.

OCR suffers from music elitism. As soon as something seems to target a different crowd, people here roll their eyes.

Take Linkin Park. I would not buy a CD, but still, I don't hate their music. Heck, some I like to hear on the radio because it changes from hearing the same pop songs over and over. However saying that would brand me as an emo goth wannabe loser.

I won't hate an artist (unless they do some hypocritical or dirtbag things), but I don't have to like them. I wish more people took this viewpoint around here. There're too many OCRers (seems more prevalent in unmod) who will claim to hate an artist for no good reason.

Clovers add to your luck rating no matter where you place them in the house.

Back to EBA bitching...you guys can defend the song list all you want, but when roughly half the songs in the game are garbage to the people that are likely to buy it, there is a reason to be a bit miffed.

Does it have to be in your house? Or can you wear it and still get the luck rating? And what does the luck rating go towards? Fishing, finding fossils, etc?

KakTheInfected

Pretty sure it has to be in the house. As far as I've seen, luck only increases the amount of money neighbors give you for certain tasks. There is a Feng Shui FAQ on Gamefaqs so you can probably find out more there.

I don't like the Rolling Stones or Bowie either. However, the original Japanese game has some artists I do like some stuff of like Nightwish, Stratovarius, and Epica, so it'd be more towards my preference.

I used to like Nightwish back when i thought it was cool to pretend to be depressed.

Well, if anything, their instrumental Moondance is to be loved (one of my friends hates Nightwish, but loves that particular instrumental - he doesn't like the vocals). Some of the lyrics do have some humor in them - there is one particular song that just makes me laugh when I hear it from their first album, and Tuomas has said that he wished he didn't write that song while drunk. A lot of their Oceanborn-Wishmaster era stuff is fantasy themed though. You may or may not like their more recent stuff since it takes the band in an operatic direction (lyrically as well), so intensity of dramatic situations is depicted strongly.

This is a bit sidetracking though. So when does Phantom Hourglass come out anyone? (And Castlevania)

So when does Phantom Hourglass come out anyone? (And Castlevania)

Q1 2007

Upcoming releases everyone should keep their eye on:

October 17- Contact
October 19- Konductra
October 24- Touch Detective, Magical Starsign
October 31- Children of Mana
November 6- Elite Beat Agents
November 14- Yoshi's Island DS, Final Fantasy 3

Also, Fry's Electronics is having a huge sale this week only (ends on the 17th): Clubhouse Games is only $24.99 and Nintendogs Dalmation Edition is only $23.99.

Toys R Us is having a sale from the 23rd to the 29th in which all games are under a buy 2 get 1 free policy (counts for any system and as far as I understand you can mix and match systems)

And also speaking of Clubhouse Games, is anyone playing it? It's a great timekiller.

How does it play anyway? Kinda like Secret of Mana but with touch for menues, or is it touch centered?

Here's what IGN had to say about it. (http://ds.ign.com/articles/727/727252p1.html)

Here are the metacritic scores/reviews. (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/contact)

I understand it to be touch-centered gameplay. Seems kinda like the battle system is a little boring, but the rest looks fun. Once I get back into playing my DS, I'm probably gonna get it.

It plays like an MMORPG in that you can see all the enemies on the field and when you go into battle, you only have control over skills and whatnot. Terry attacks automatically, and keeps attacking, until the battle is over. You can interuppt him by using the aforementioned skills and items and whatnot.

The localization is great; lots of humor and whatnot, graphics are interesting: the screens are different. One shows Terry in a more "realistic" looking world while the other shows the professor in all his 16-bit sprite glory. The professor talks to you, the player, and gives you tasks, and then you turn around and guide Terry through his world to achieve those tasks.

EDIT- Also, it's only $28.88 at Outpost.com (http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4865540)

Also note that you can never have too many flowers in your town (according to a FAQ I read). That is, if every spot you can walk on in your town has flowers on it, no one will complain about it, so plant new ones every day.

Adder's CO meter is xxXXX, while Koal's is xxxXX. Doesn't look like it means anything, but it basically boils down to Adder getting to his CO Power faster than Koal, as well as being able to double Sidesliping.

Koal's firing bonus on roads is crap. Who's going to leave a unit on the road, when it doesn't give any defense bonuses? It's pretty much saying "HAY GUYS COME KILL ME NOW."

That, and most maps won't have roads in places that it'd actually be practical to fire from.

So...go with Adder. He looks cooler, anyway.

Offtopic once again. I think Lunar's pretty awesome, but I'm blown away by Hunters.

No really, I'm exceptionally impressed by it.

No, I don't care if it's old news.

Lunar IS awesome. Lunar Dragon Song is fucking awful, though. Biggest disappointment of all time.

:(

I'm enjoying it though. Plus, I got it cheap. I get all my games cheap. Because I'm a tightfisted bastard, who only buys when it's on special and pre-owned.

I cannot stress enough how much you need to play each of the other Lunar games.

This is usually caused by you missing the cracks. Obviously, if they aren't dug up, new ones don't appear.

My friend was having the same problem until I dug up two fossils hidden behind trees and buildings. Then it worked as per normal. Who knows why I was able to spot them when he wasn't. 8O

Well, like I said, this is happening to pretty much everyone I know who plays. While there's a definetly slight chance, I doubt we're all so blind that we're missing the cracks.

Lunar 2 is an exercise in an RPG's tediousness. I had very mixed feelings about the game - loved the OST, and the story was intriguing, but the combat...holy shit was it shitty.

Bah! Children! All of ya! I'm 28, and I play it whenever I have the time. Hell, I'll be 29 by the time it comes out here!

In case any of you are wondering how much transferring from your GBA game to your DS game you will be doing, the game is nice enough to include... get this... 425 of the 445 pokemon. You don't have to transfer for days on end to complete the dex! Most of the pokemon can be captured between Diamond and Pearl, and with online trading and the Global Trading System, you can do it as long as you have wireless access somewhere.

The remaining pokemon (http://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/unobtainables.shtml) are the previous starters and older legendaires. Other than those ones, you can catch and trade for everything else.

And for those of you here that want some, I have every starter and all but three of the old legendaires. I'm willing to trade with those that are missing them.

On other matters, I went to three different stores to see if I could find Contact. Of the three, only one had any for sell, and that place only had three copies, all of which were gone. Is the game that popular, that rare, or did a lot of places justnot bother getting it?

Castlevania: PoR online details (http://gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7096)

Another online facet is the shop mode. Players will be able to offer up items they find in the main game for others to buy. It's interesting to note that when someone buys one of your items, you receive money for it but don't lose the item. Thus, you could potentially just keep a valuable item up there and accumulate a lot of money. Gamespot also notes that the shop mode could prove very helpful in the event that you have trouble with a boss but don't feel like trekking back to a shopkeeper to buy potions.

Mind, as long as I'm here, did anyone find their review for Crash Boom Bang (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=735637) to be a little harsh? Then you obviously never played much of the first one. The Tony Hawk DS games control great and have beautiful graphics (and run at 60fps). There's massive customization options for graffiti and skateboards, all of which can be uploaded online and downloaded from other users. What's more, entire 2:00 skate run videos can be downloaded from other players and watched on your DS. And once you get tired of the main game, you can go online and play a variety of multiplayer games, or download the new challenges that come out every week.

THDJ does one better, with full customization options for appearance and clothes and voice chat in-game. As in, not just in between sessions like Metroid Prime: Hunters, but actually during the session.

I mean, sure, I can see the argument for seeing how the Tony Hawk's engine was used on the DS and created into an extensive title, but the fact remains that it's something that we've seen before on prior consoles, and we also figure that the context of skateboarding can only seem to appeal to a limited set of gamer types. That's what seems to worry me most; not how much it pushes itself to have fun or whatever. To most gamer types, it could just look like something created solely for the MTV generation.

I just finished Part 1 of the first case. The game reminds me of the investigation parts of Phoenix Wright (in that you ask questions to the various characters while traveling around town, picking up clues, etc.) and the adventure/puzzle elements of Trace Memory. So far I haven't had much problem with the puzzle logic, and the writing is very very well done (I expected nothing less from Atlus). Some really humorous dialogue, and on top of that, the game is just so damn CUTE.

I can definitely see adventure game fans liking this.

Finishing that game was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences ever.

Fuck. With the Wii coming out, I don't think I can afford FF3, Contact, or any of the other games coming out in November. Fucking Nintendo, making games I want to play for systems I own/want to own.

This is the reason I haven't bought any single games apart from the Dawn of War + Winter Assault (30€) combo. I've been saving A LOT to get a Wii with everything I want a few DS games, and all the stuff I've missed (like 2 or 3 games) at christmas.

Man, I'm good at planning ahead. Check Bahamut's sig and you'll see I haven't "splurged" :(

Yes, it can't be possible that a Tony Hawk game got a good rating because Tony Hawk games are notorious for being un-fun.

Do I even need to tag this with /sarcasm?

If you think the person or people you're being sarcastic with are incapable of detecting it without a sarcasm tag, then they aren't worth talking to.

sarcasm tags suck.

I got my girl interested in the DS, so I'm getting her the pink one for Christmas. I'm thinking of getting her Super Princess Peach and Nintendogs, as well as a kirby game. Should I get her Canvas Curse, or Squeak Squad? which one would be better for someone relatively new to gaming?

I'd recommend Canvas Curse for pure fun. For platformer overload, get her NSMB and Squeak Squad too.

Actually, I recommend figuring out if she's a dog person. If she is, Nintendogs is right there.

Kirby: Canvas Curse is overrated. I bought it. Played it. Enjoyed it. It isn't exactly a "must have".

10-27-2006, 04:31 PM
I'm more concerned about Canvas Curse being pretty easy; that was the only downpoint when deciding on my second game for the system from last Easter (which ended up being Animal Crossing: Wild World).

Also, may I need to stress that if anyone needs a good platformer fetish, Sonic Rush is a high recommendation; makes good balance of the DS features (except it doesn't use the microphone :() and has good challenge to boot, especially when it comes to getting A rankings on every level.

I know that it can actually get a little OTT for your "girl" in question, but you may never know what she could consider :)

Meh, Gamespot gave God Hand an 8.0 which is a higher rating than Trauma Center and Mega Man ZX received. Both of those two games are superior.

Perhaps Gamespot just is biased against the DS in general.

Maybe it's because those two DS games are reputed to be incredibly short. And Trauma Center is almost too difficult for its own good later on.

God Hand is a Clover game.. so.

Saying they're superior means absolutely nothing. Superior at what? These are all games from totally different genres, you can't compare them like that.

That said, I saw Worms Open Warfare at EB for $20, I should go back and see if it's still there.

Still no luck. In a worst case scenario, I may have to delete everything and start over. If I wanna keep my stuff, I may have to get a 2nd copy of the game and transfer my stuff over to the new town. But then there's the chance that whatever bug is causing Nook to deny me access to my catalog might get transferred over as well. If that happens, I'm royally fucked.

EDIT: Maybe if someone visits, leaves and then I close my gate, that might fix the problem. I have my gates open right now; anyone wanna try?

Also, I finally got that letter from Nintendo that comes with a watermelon chair. You have to go to your phone and allow it to download letters and bulletins.

I think the reference is the fact that "goons" and "something awful" are used in the same sentence.

Unless of course, you mean "goons wrecked them up something awful", which would be a really strange coincidence.

I don't buy that explanation. The words "hit the weak point for massive damage!" is an actual term too. But give me a break. You know that is a reference. Mainly because those sentences are just grammatically odd and emphasize those words a bit. And you know what's funny? The way people are SO OFFENDED because it's Something Awful. Big deal. I swear I caught the words "it's sacrilegious" in those flame wars. Because references are serious business.

If they're offended by SA references, there's several other games they shouldn't play.

Here's a few:

Banhammer and Mace of Slurring in Morrowind.
Player ranking "SA Goon" in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City(Confirmed as a reference by one of the people who worked on the game)
Jeff K picture in Heavy Metal FAKK 2.
Pusher Bots referenced in Aliens versus Predator 2.
Jeff K reference in No One Lives Forever.
Jeff K cyclops in Icewind Dale.
Lowtax tombstone in Icewind Dale 2.
Lowtax, Jeff K and other user names the commentary will audibly call out in Links 2004.
In Quake 3, Crash in bot mode will say "JeffK is my drill master!" from time to time.
Doom 3 has SA's front page visible on a monitor.
Pacific Fighters has "Rich Kyanka and the SA goons" in its Thank You section of the manual, and there's nose art referencing SA available for at least one of the planes.
Sin Episodes: Emergence has a poster which shows a stick figure at the top of a flight of stairs, with the text "Do you have stairs in your house?".

There is also acknowledgment to Lowtax and SA in the Return to Castle Wolfenstein instruction manual and the credits of EA's Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Also, Garry's mod was made by a goon, and 9.0 uses the :V: smiley as an icon on the Steam game list.

Star Fox is good for multiplayer and online. The single player sucks, yes, but if you can play multiplayer it's certainly worth a purchase.

And Contact is both incredibly good and incredibly boring. It's one of the games where, when you die, you don't feel like playing again for about an hour but you never truly feel like just quitting.

Edit: Found another goofy reference in Contact. "I wish a base like this belonged to us."

Anyone who's bashing Starfox Command can stuff it. No, it's not like Starfox or Starfox 64, nor is it trying to be. It's just a good game on its own, with intuitive and responsive controls (the turning is just as fast as SF64's, and I just drew circles for barrel rolls and never had any problems), and has a creative hybrid of shooter and turn-based strategy elements. The missions are addicting, and the campaigns are short enough on average to finish each in one sitting.

I had to send the game back because it was a rental, but I seriously considered buying it for the WiFi. If you're not hardcore intent on getting a traditional Starfox experience, I highly recommend the game.

So, is anyone getting Custom Robo Arena in December? I cannot stress enough just how good this game is, which sucks even worse because I'm terrible with descriptions. It's easily the best online game on the DS right now, even better than Hunters.

In the RPG portion, you go around and fight other people from rival schools and whatnot (blah blah blah typical Japanese stuff) and collect parts for your robo as you advance the storyline. Once you buy the parts in the RPG portion, you can use them online.

The weapons are nicely balanced and each serve a purpose. Guns can be fired while sliding so you can attack while still avoiding fire, missiles can be lobbed over walls, pod weapons will chase your enemy (think snarks from Half-Life) and you can boost yourself at the enemy if they get too close and cause a lot of damage.

I know I'm babbling and a lot of people probably already know all of this from the GameCube game but...wow, online is so damn fun.

And the game is beautiful, too. One stage has you fighting on top of a stealth fighter with boxes on top of it. The boxes slide everywhere as the fighter tilts and the shadow work is pretty damn amazing for a DS game.

I've played Custom Robo for GCN a few times. I didn't like it; the controls were slow to respond, mainly because I couldn't fire and run at the same time, and the arenas were too small. The ability to run while firing your gun in the DS one should fix the first problem to some extent, but how big are the arenas? Overall, if the game will be as big an improvement as Mario Kart DS was over Double Dash, then I'll keep an eye on it. And if the game isn't out yet, I'm assuming you played it at the Fusion Tour or something?

Also, about Nook not letting me view my catalog even when no one's visiting. That happens whenever I move backwards in time and save the game. To fix it, all I have to do is visit someone else's town and come back to mine.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a classic-feeling point and click adventure game from the 3rd person. Only knock on it is that it's on the short side (less than 10 hours), but the plot is good. If you end up liking it, check out Touch Detective, too. They're very similar.

Isn't Toys R Us having some sort of special sell on games? Something about three games at the price of the heapest or something? Maybe you could check that out.

It's their annual buy 2 get 1 free sale I think.

The controls seem fine to me. The only weapon I've noticed you have to stop to fire are missiles (and that's pretty much because they have to be aimed). Some guns make you stop too, but instead of firing a burst, they fire one shot at a time and can fire faster depending on how fast you mash the button. There is almost zero lag too.

I'm playing the Japanese version, by the way.

Of course, it will be much more effeicient than the US version.

Didn't the sale end yesterday? My TRU's here told me the sale ran through to Oct. 28, which is why I took advantage of it when I could. I picked up Downhill Jam, Nanostray and Magical Starsign. I might just sell the last one on ebay or even return it.

Didn't Kak tell you how to do it? Or am I thinking of other people?

Anyway, you shake the bottle very rapidly for 2 - 3 seconds and then let go. It should pop about a second later.

KakTheInfected

I just did it 3 times. Shake it as rapidly as you can and let go at the 3 second mark. It should pop between 4-4.5 seconds if you shook quickly enough.

So I have an Animal Crossing question: is it possible to cheat the game by changing the date & time on your DS?

KakTheInfected
10-30-2006, 05:16 AM
Yup. Neighbors would move out and you'd miss events just as if time actually passed, but you can get money quicker and easier that way.

I've never done it though. I'm not a filthy, horrible cheater.

I beat it in 5 hours but really liked it a lot. You can get it for really cheap now so I would definitely recommend getting it. Also...touch detective is similar? Aww Crap there are too many games that I have to get right now.

I finished that around 4 hours, pretty short game. Good though. And yea, Touch Detective is like a mix between Trace Memory and Phoenix Wright. Also throw in some of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time for cuteness.

Currently with 10 million in my bank. And no, most of the animals still stayed unlike what a lot of people say. But you do get a million weeds to pluck. But it's not that bad.

Possible 4chan /b/ reference in Phoenix Wright 2. And they thought Something Awful references were hideous. But I like it.

I assumed it was just a Fresh Prince reference. He goes on to recite more of the song as he gets whipped while trying to tell more jokes.

Yeah, it could be. Or it could be because of the reference that has caught like wildfire in /b/ recently. Sorta like the Walker Texas Ranger fad that was actually from the Conan O'Brien show until it became popularized in the internet and YTMND.

It would've been nice if the game didn't give out prizes for saving shitloads of money that would literally take years to get without cheating, even if you played every single day. You know there's people out there (like me lol) crazy enough to do what it takes to get those items. If that were the case, I would've stopped cheating once I got 10 million bells in my account, but I'm over 250 million so far; I gotta have that Town Hall model.

As a reminder to other time travelers, remember that Nook stops giving you access to your catalog if you move back in time and save. The only way that I know of to fix it is to visit another player's town and then go back without getting disconnected.

Maybe I should read manuals, lol.

I just never really thought about it actually.

Reading the manual is one of the first things I do when I get a new game. Not because I need to know how to play the game, but because it's part of the experience of a new game. Flip through it, look at the screenshots, the artwork... and the smell of the ink on the shiny paper. Mmmmmm... nasal stimulation...

Why can't you just do the stalk market? :?

If you have a few friends and a few hundred thousand bells, you can buy all the turnips you can hold and sell them when they are above what you bought. That would be a lot of profit, wouldn't it?

The golden shovel is the only way to get money trees...but the percentage is low - I've planted like 11, and after 4 days (for the first 4 I did), none of the 4 gave me bags o 30,000 coins :( .
