Mega Man X 'Brainsick Metal'
Protricity might as well be called the next Scott Peeples at the rate he's going! This time he serves up a synthrock medley from Mega Man X which is so intense that I could honestly see myself speeding, oh, 30-40 mph over while listening to this if I wasn't careful! The guitars can sound a tad synthy at times, but that's my only complaint. All in all, this is a must-download.

What a fast paced mix. The drum fills are great, they really make me want to jump out of seat. An amazing song to begin with, this mix is just incredable, it can't really be described in words. And I wouldn't be too surprised if I heard something about people speeding on the freeway while listening to this...

The synthesized guitar suits a mix like this one, it was very well done. I enjoy this remix a lot, especially for this piece of music in the game. Now if this were only the way the music went in the game...:D

This song is the Megaman medley to end all, Protricity is godly when it comes to this stuff. Of course, the other version was better :P But, oh well, anything is better than nothing. Good job! Kickass! OMFG AWP C4MPER BASTARD!

Wonderful, he combined the levels I loved, and turned them into a kickin' song. He deffinately could've gone longer with this one, as each level didn't get enough fun in the sun, but on the bright side, it leaves you wanting more, and also, it leaves you wanting to hear it again. The ending though, was great. I like how all of the levels seemed to head up into the final part, which is Spark Mandrill's stage. Yet, in my opinion, if he hadn't have ended it with the drums going into the verse again, it would've felt more complete. Instead, it feels slightly "Cut off". Yet, I can't take this song off repeat on my CD player, I honestly can't. Very inspirational. Keep up the good work Protricity!

The perfect music to listen to while driving in gross excess of the speed limit.

Just awesome. Just the mix I wanted to hear from this game was Spark Mandrill's theme, and to stir it with Storm Eagle's stage and one other was really great. Ranking high on my list.

This is one of if not the absolute best remix i have ever heard. He keeps the same feel in the remix that we got I the game. The transitions are perfect, there's never a dull moment. Every time i listen to the song i get flashbacks from the game. The arrangement of all the parts is flawless. The complexity of the parts gives it a somewhat mechancial feel, but it is perfect and given the choice i would rather have an X theme with a mechanical feel than organic. Besides, trying to mimc those parts is going to keep me busy for months. It's got the rush of power that is a necesity in every megaman remix. Overall this is an amzing song. Everything was done right. It doesn't get any better than this. Astounding job by protricity. I look forward to hearing more of his stuff.
I found another addition to my highway music. right up there with all the f-zero music.

I've seriously listened to this song upwards of 300, maybe 400 times. I usually get hooked on a song, listen to it for a month, then forget it for a while, but I don't think this has ever gotten very far from my current playlist.
The best part is that while I was going to high school, it took me just about 6:24 to get from my house to school (speeding quite a bit of course).
What a great track.

I like it alot! of course I could just be saying this be cause I always love the MMX type of music... I could see myself speeding down the highway with this kind of music.. then crashing cuz I don't know how to drive.. but the important part is the speeding to me. I wish there were more X remixes though.

I love this song, never heard or played the original, but there are parts in here that sound like they are slightly remixed versions of one of the tracks from a racing game called Aero Gauge....one instance is from 5'06 to 5'18. And it repeats a few times, and I just remembered where it was from...*feels a request coming on*

Wow. That's the first thing that ran through my mind after it was finished being blown away by this prime example of how electronic rock can still kick ass. I think everything I have to say has already been said, but I'll reiterate why I like it. The guitar (which is actually a simply square wave from what Prot tells me) fits perfectly in the superb arrangement of the three themes, pitch bending and modulating like no one's business to create what sounds like an extended Hide or Slash solo. The three themes are blended together nicely, with no transition problems. The drums are not simply looped throughout the entire piece, but sound (more or less) like they are actually being played.
The bass could have been a bit more prominent, but that's no big deal. And of course, higher quality encoding is always favorable, but I realize that would have been impossible in this case.
Paragon

Cons:
The guitar, for the most part, sounds awful. I understand that a synthed guitar is difficult to work with, but I think it would have been better with a different instrument. (Except at the beginning of the Storm Eagle theme--that works.)
It's too repetitive. The beginning, for example, should be shorter--hearing the main section of the beginning repeated again after the solo bit just made me think "yeah, I've heard this part already, come on!". Maybe cutting in half would've worked better. (The problem is, it builds up to a preclimax, then drops back to something non-climactic, like repeating the same buildup again--~1:46 to ~2:06 is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.)
Pros:
The actual arrangement (the variations and solos) is quite good.
The drums are great--while I usually hate this type of snare, I felt it worked very well with this song.
As mentioned, the Storm Eagle section is great, as are the transitions.

Paragon, the lead is a simple square wave, not a guitar. It's hard not to criticize a square wave.

I've listened to this a few times, and it's a good remix. Very long at almost 7 minutes long, but what Protricity did that was great, is that the song doesn't drag on. The whole song keeps me going, it doesn't make me think "Ok, gonna hit next song, this has gotten boring." It's also a very catchy song.
8/10 :)

I've seen nothing but excellence from Protricity, I wish I could just find one he hasn't done perfectly, but anyways. This is another one, great fast paced, love the climatic feel at the end. Just great.

Nice Remix.
It is definitely fast-paced, but that's not a bad thing.
I enjoy the first theme in the medley (Intro level) more than the other two. (Storm Eagle, Spark Mandrill) Although all three sound good overall.
This remix starts of well IMO, with the fast paced backround drums and guitar, and slides in to the main part of the theme, and that's something I repsect in a remix. This theme goes on and then slides into Storm Eagle's theme, which has a good sound to it. Although the Chikusho Sound Team's job was better sounding to me. This medley by Protricity has a defined sound though, so no real complaints should be made. Once the storm eagle theme has gone for 1 minute, 45 seconds, the Spark Mandrill theme will be transitioned in to. It also is fast-paced, but sounds almost just right for what it is.
Nice job with with drums, nice job with guitars.
This is probably the best or second best MMX theme on this site. Give it a download if you are a MMX fan, or just curious.

Very nice remix, one of my personal favorites. It always flows smoothly and always feels "MMXish". The guitar sounds synthed (sp?) at times, but I think it adds flavor to this particular song. 2:51 sounds kinda ugly, but all other parts are fantastic. A must download for rock fans.

One of my favourite Megaman remixes. I particularly liked the job done on Spark Mandrill's theme (one of the best themes in the game). I listen to this one a lot, and never get sick of it.... it's so fast-paced, and so well done that you don't get bored of it.
Some really nice stuff.

In my opinion, this is the best MMX remix. Ever. Not only did he use four of my absolute favorite themes in the game, but he also kept them relitively the same, while molding them into one, complete song that sounds utterly incredible. I sincerely hope we'll see an oncore from him sometime in the future: I would wet myself if I ever heard a remix of the MMX2 opening stage by him ;p

This has been one of my favorite arrangments for some time now. Why I haven't posted in regards to it in time past is abit of an enigma to me.
Basically this mix will keep you listening from start to finish. I, personally; like the second half better than the first but it's all great. For some reason, though, the melodies at the end really hit me the right way. 3:02 is where it really takes off, then at 4:40 it gets even better.
Truly great work. ReMixes like this one are the reason I am a fan of Overclocked. Not just good, but a true masterpiece. In one word: prodigious.
I like this remix a lot, I just dislike when the song goes from one tune to the other, too much going on for me. But this guy really captured what the game supposed to have sounded like, rather than messing with the scores too much. That's what I try to look for in these remixes. = ) There was one song that I thought should be in this one though, Flame Mammoth's stage....

When I first heard this I was thinking, 'So what, the in-game music sounds like this anyway.' But upon a closer listen, wow, this really has been done up fantastically, tweaking that synth. That lead-in to Spark Mandrill at 4:14ish.. awesome! There's just a tremendous energy in this that never lets up and takes you on a real rollercoaster, great arrangment and a great piece to wake you up in the morning!

This exactly how mega man remixes should be done.
Mega man was born to rock, not to beebop to techno madness. I especially like the last half of the song, Storm Eagle to Spark Mandrill, great themes originally and even better in this mix.
I listened the original musics, of course. That is VERY megaman. All songs from megaman is rock. Therefore he is called rockman. Yeah, this stuff is pure rock in roll. Ari has the custom to modify more than one music. Here, Prot transformed the First Stage, Storm Eagle's Stage and Spark Mandrill's Stage. Wow, good versions! Another great remix from Ari.
Huh...brainsick metal in my ears. yenk!

I got excited when I saw that Prot had remixed this one, and since I know I couple of his works, I knew that this would either rock or be beautiful. It turned out be Freaking Awesome!!
I haven't played MMX, so unfortunately I don't have anything to compare with. It didn't sound very special in the beginning, it was first after the screaming synth kicked in that I knew that the techno madness was about to begin. It kept on rolling with drums and beats, and I enjoyed every single part of it. The change-overs to the other robot themes just enhanced the adrenaline level, first out came Storm eagle and then apparently Spark Mandrill. It's fast paced, has variety, and all the instruments are weaved into each other like a carpet. For some it may be hard to enjoy, since it's so much going on with all the instruments, but when it comes to MegaMan remixes, all you can do is stuff it up. That's how it's supposed and will be. At least if you want a fast going mix like this one.
Protricity, excellent work.

I like this mix alot... the intro is very nicely done IMO, but I didn't like the way the transitions to the next song felt, it just threw me off. The end wasn't anything to get excited over either, but I enjoyed this mix a good amount. I'd say the three songs in the mix are some of my favorite in the game, and he did very well in remixing them.

When I was around 11 I was completely obsessed with the megaman x series, and went on napster since it was around back then, and downloaded this song not knowing what it was. I listened to it over and over and the name "protricity" was in the back of my head forever, since it was simply called Protricity - Brainsick metal. When I found out about the site a few years later and saw "protricity" I went insane. This remains one of my favorite songs, plus the nostalgia helps.

Strongly disagree with your take on the ending. I thought/think the ending is incredible and it's always been my favorite part. To each his own, no worries.
At anyrate, saw this mix up on the board and thought I'd drop in and see what the more recent reviewers thought. Still an all time greatest in my opinion.
This song brings justice to Megaman X. Good song imo.
This here is definitely one of my favourite remixes on the entire website.
Mega Man X has always been a game I like to play every now and then, and it has always had the same great soundtrack. Brainsick Metal takes some of the better songs from this soundtrack, merges them together, and greatly improves them!
There's been days where this song just looped and looped and looped and I didn't want to change it because it fits my preferences for music so incredibly well!
For me, the song really comes on strong halfway through the Storm Eagle section of the song where the rest of the instuments come in, from then on out it's just so intense that it has my foot tapping constantly.
An excellent remix here and by me, at least, it's highly recommended! For those of you who don't like rock songs though, or the Mega Man X soundtrack in general... you won't like it. :P

I really love this remix: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00569/
I'm a big fan of Protricity but...this remix is too electronic...
An instrumental version of this would be awesome, don't you think?
zircon
06-05-2007, 03:12 PM
A few things...
(1) It already is instrumental. Maybe you meant "acoustic" instead.
(2) It is highly unlikely that Protricity still has the file for this and could actually change it, since it is years old.
(3) Even if he did, it is usually frowned upon around here when you ask a mixer to redo an older mix - especially if it's in a big way like changing the instrumentation in its entirety.
Dunther
06-05-2007, 03:27 PM
Well I think that an electronic version not does justice to the track...and I was not meaning an acoustic version but a instrumental version with a real guitar (and bass maybe)...
Liontamer
06-05-2007, 03:57 PM
It's definitely a faux pas to ask an arranger to heavily redo a track, especially an older piece, like zircon mentioned. I wouldn't expect anything to come of the request, to be honest. The best you could hope for is someone else deciding to do it, which is doubtful, though more unlikely things have happened.

I love how absurdly synthy these guitars are. It's like 16-bit amped. I seriously wonder if someone submitted something arranged this well but with samples like this for today's OCRemix standards if it would actually pass. I would go out on a limb and say probably not. But hey, now we've got remix tha sauce as well as this site so it's all good.
This song totally makes me want to tackle some mega man music but with the sounds that I have :)! I have a strange love for synthesized metal stuff when it's done well. :)

ALRIGHT! I'm glad to see this remix getting more reviews. This has been one of my old favorites for a very long time. I agree with what Kidd Jredd said about the current standards. I don't know if it could make it now, but either way, it's just so damn fun and it's got a lot of style and character and that goes a long way with me. It's fast too. I love the three themes that were chosen. I would have LOVED to hear some Spark Mandrill integrated into this. Oh yeah! Someday I hope to be able to make something like this with real guitars and played even faster. ^_^
Edit: Wait a minute! That IS Spark Mandrill. Thanks Appiraition. What the heck did I think it was...? Hahaha.

Starting out with the fact that the Opening Stage arrangement alone belongs in the actual game track instead of the original, thats just what I thought at the beginning. But then I listened on and all of the arrangements capture both the action and the mood so much better than the actual game. Not only did you go where the songs brought you, but I feel like you pretty much expressed the heart of the songs better than the orginal artists did themselves. This piece is worthy of being three different pieces separately rather than the whole of just because each arrangement is done so well. Well done Protricity, I also loved the Forest Birdcussion piece for DKC2. To sum my opinion up more simply, I made an ocremix forums account just to comment on this piece ;)

I agree with axem that the beginning of your song belongs in the game more than the one that is actually in there. You totally nailed the synth sounds used in the game's music, while adding some great guitar sounds that exude energy. Love the fast paced bass as well, and the drum rolls interspersed throughout add a nice change of pace. If they ever do a remake of Mega Man X, Capcom should contact you for some music. You nailed everything that Mega Man X's Music is about. Simple, clean energenic fun. I wish you'd do another piece from Mega Man X just to see what you could do with something like Chill Penguin's stage, Boomer Kwanger's stage or Zero's theme.
GREAT JOB!

Very nice song! I was half way through and heard sfx that related to the megaman series very well!
Brainsick Metal seizes your mood and doesn't let go. Drums are super attentive as they fill in as 4ths, 8ths, 16ths, 32nds, and maybe even 64ths in sugar-pumped spurts. The guitar and square wave leads match their raw power with definitive grinds and wails of their own. Guided by a constant tempo, they tear up the sound field and thrash through the Maverick-infested levels.
I imagine X not only running, but jumping and wall-jumping to the beat while the background changes to the level being remixed. Sources are loud and clear, with a few piecemeal embellishments to repeating portions using layered synths (i.e. the beginning of Storm Eagle's stage [2:28-2:48] and the prelude to Spark Mandrill's [4:16-4:36]). 1:47 and 2:07 both sound pensive and anticipating, the former by way of a hesitant, reverbed synth and the latter using what sounds like gated reverb and light strings. At 3:55 the lead mellows down into a siren-like herald to the final source, and the bells are brighter and more polished. And at the end, the waves from the guitar thrashes leave us out of breath but completely satisfied after a round of hard rockin'.
Packed, pumpin', and powerful.

Simply the best MMX remix I've heard so far. Making short work of not one, but three X themes and doing justice to them, I gotta hand it to Prot, he's gold at these mixes. The Spark Mandrill part is the one I think was done the best, to be honest.
Not really digging the synth guitars, but the rest of this is awesome. The intensity of the track definitely shines through, and the attention to the leads really pays off. Nice section changes, there is always something interesting going on. Storm Eagle is especially well handled, and the transitions between sections are solid too. Pretty much this makes up for the weak backing samples and sound quality with pure adrenaline.
Really great stuff. :-)
