Punch-Out!! 'Little Mac's Confession'

I'll just start by saying this: I'm generally opposed to adding lyrics to instrumental video game music, since I think the music should be able to speak for its self. Nevetheless, this song is VERY well done, and the lyrics add a lot to it (except for the "Punch out!", which I found more than a little cheesy). This is definately something I would listen to again, so give it a try regardless of your stance on lyrics. And if you like your VGmusic with lyrics, then there shouldn't be any doubt, should there?

yes, if you like vocals with game music, or a really big fan of 80s metal, this is a good song for you. I really loved the instrumental work on this though. Very nicely put together. Just not a fan of the vocals and lyrics though.

This is outstanding. I'm not a huge metal fan, but I loved this. At points, the vocals seem hard to understand and should have been brought out more. Thats my only complaint. It is nice to actually hear a decent vocalist for a video game cover. Even if you don't like metal, this one is worth the download. Burn it and love it.

This remix is godly. It's one of the top 3 for me.

This mix is very godly, I agree with Legion303. The lyrics are perfect in my mind, I don't have any complaints about that. In fact I really do think that they pay a good tribute to the game. A must have for your collection, hands down.

How you can turn something like this into a song is truly amazing. It's really a jaw-dropping mix after you listen to it. Without a doubt the best mix for this game! :)

Like everyone else has said, if you like lyrics...personally I don't, especially when the lyrics are talking about or saying the name of the game...but this is really good. Quality guitar and you KNOW it's Punch Out right away. Though I wonder why the screen shot they show is from the non Tyson one, rather, they chose Mr Dream.

Ryan8bit
06-25-2002, 05:48 AM
The picture is Mr. Dream because Mr. Dream is in the lyrics. And the reason Mr. Dream is in the lyrics is because Tyson is a psycho who has a real history of questionable things.

This is one of my most favorite game remixes of all time. Game Over did an outstanding job on this and adding the lyrics made it that more special. The only problem I had with this song was they should have used better drums, I just feel that all rock music should come with great drums too. But overall an outstanding remix from a very talented music group and I cant wait to hear some more of their latest work.

Rock On! 8)

The triple kick in the bass drum really appealed to me, leading me to ask my brother (who is quite knowledgeable in music) what other songs have really pronounced, fast, hard bass drum parts in them. He ended up recommending Evolution by Symphony X, The Glass Prison by Dream Theater, Get To The Gone by Static X, and Shine by Sevendust. Just thought I'd share. :)

Well what can I say. This is the best remix, if you can call a masterpiece like this that, on the site. go directly to http://www.nintendometal and praise them with all your might! Ehm.. what I'm trying to say is that Game Over Rocks. Elizabeth Pezouvanis rocks and you will download this remix now!!

This is, to my mind, the epitome of all video game remixes. 100% Kick-ass and guaranteed to satisfy. The lyrics/vocals add a LOT to the piece and are very well done, not to mention the spectacular guitar work. If you don't have this song, you're missing out. My only complaint would be the drum work. The rhythm of the drums is fine...but they lack the right amount of ... I dunno, "oomph" or "kick". In other words, the drums sound like they came from a machine, rather than from a person playing a set of drums. Still, this song rocks (literally) and is my favorite from this site! Take a bow, Game Over, you deserve it.

This is by far one of the coolest mixes I've heard.
Definately NEEDS to be downloaded.
You must hear this.
Excellent piece.
The vocals combined with the guitar just blew me away.
Good stuff... :D

Not much can be said other than Amazing. It's prefectly composed with added sounds from the game itself. The only somewhat bad part is that the drumming get's a bit frantic, mostly because it's the only part that wasn't actually performed. If you've listened to it 10 times, and still can't get the lyrics, Nintendometal.com has the lyrics for all thier songs.

This song pretty much defines what this site is all about. Awesome guitar work, lyrics that actually go with the game concept and sound great, and actually add onto the song, Game Over has made this into something else. Saying "jawdropping" is a gross understatement. Although the drums could use more of a heavier feeling, the song is otherwise flawless. There needs to be more remixes from metal bands. Great great stuff. It should be a crime not to have this.

I got their demo in the mail today, and I must say, if you have 5 bucks to spare, BUY THIS DEMO! All the songs on it are basically the same music wise, except Heavy Mario (not really sure why they put that on their site with Little Mac). Its definately worth the money for it though.

why do you all insuilt this remix the way you do? dont your realize none of your compliments will ever truly do this song justice? perfect is an understatement. i will never hear anything that will top this. If the weekly/monthly whatever spotlight starts, this is the first one there. Im so so so serious about this. You better be listening to the song as your reading this thread. I was and it made every word so much more meaningful. This song is really the best this site has to offer. And i am pretty much a mostly techno, house, trance fan and only like choice rock and metal songs. BEST EVER! (everything i have said is nowhere near good enough the praise this song deserves)

This is my new Favorite OC ReMix! Along with Castlevania 2 - Bloody Hell. This ReMix is totally awesome! Me and my friends are big fans of the game, and this is the best tribute to it ever! I am working on a DBZ music video with this ReMix right now and it will be at http://breemanamv.8m.com when it is finished, and let me tell you, im not just a newbie video editor, I made it to the second round of majin planet's ( http://www.majinplanet.com ) Fight Club DBZ music video contest, so you can expect my "Punch Out" music video to be a really good tribute to Game Over.
also Sammich, your brother has great songs reccomendations, The Glass Prison from Dream Theater's new Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a great song! Dream Theater is my #1 favorite band and barely anyone I know has heard of them before I told them about them. It really cool that your brother reccomended such an awesome band as them. They are definately a band to check out, like this remix!

You actually *enjoy* DBZ? Burn the heathen!

Anyway, the song. I was skeptical until hte opening ended. Then, it would have been my favorite ever, but I personally don't go for lyrics in mixes. It's good. I just don't like it. However, that's my fault, not his.

Was looking for metal versions of the nintendo classics but if it thats the sound i'll stick with the originals. Whats with the vocal and lyrics? It's not a new song,it's a cover so give it up. I'd rather go for the techno versions then this. The beginning almost fooled me that this was something good. Too much "personal touch" destroyed it...

You're obviously in the minority.

Hey, this is my first post here, but I've been reading the forums/listening to these remixes for too long. 8) And yes, I can't praise this song enough. I mean, am I the only one who's noticed the wordplay? Mr. Dream had turned into a nightmare... Some Hooks, a barrage of his claws. Couple this with the seamless integration of new riffs and existing tunes from the game...I've burned this onto a mix CD, I listen to it every day, and I STILL can't believe the sheer talent behind this band. Just wanted to add to the mountain of praise this song already has.

The galloping double bass at the moment when the song first picks up is incredible, and the end to the second chorus when the game sample comes in and the "countdown" theme starts. . .that gives me a chill down my spine that only the likes of Opeth and Amorphis have been able to do.

This is likely my favorite remake of a VG song, ever.

I agree boys. This song is great. I am looking forward to more contributions from "game over". These guys are talented. Hey "game over", if you are reading this, I want more remixes of classic NES games like Punch-OUT!!! Keep up the good work guys. How about Contra next hehe?

I loved the knockdown theme they added in the song. Great touch.

I absolutley would love this mix to death if the drums didn't sound soooooo fake. Actually, it isn't all the drums. It's pretty much just the snare. It's too poppy. Now I know what you're thinking "What a nit-picker" but you have to remember, that sound is repeated every 2 and 4 throughout the whole song. And even more than that at some points. The arrangement is spot on sounding like a Dream Theater type deal. Except the lead singer isn't a woman like the Dream Theater guy. :D The "falling down" sound that occurs as they say Punch-Out is just awesome. Hell, this whole song kicks three and a half pounds of ass. Definitely an OCR classic.

My jaw is dropping and I am drooling. This is one of the sickest remixes I've heard. I love this mix! And the lyrics rock because I've fought Mr. Dream before and that bitch is a tough cookie. Awesome, I checked out Game Over's site too, and they got some good stuff.

I'll grant that the "PUNCH OUT!" part is a little cheesy, but it's just like throwing in the "MORTAL KOMBAAATTT!" part into the song....it's just there and it isn't too bad.

But anyway, god damn I love this mix. Wootness, goes on the CD. They get my vote.

Ok, i haven't really played this game that much, but this remix...whoah! Um...which rock band did this again.

Amazing...taking a 8-bit vg theme, and turning it into a killer piece. Wow. I never thought that of all the games, Punch-Out could have the most killer one. Forget all of the Chrono Trigger, Mega Man, and Final Fantasy remixes...nothing can compare to this!!!!!

Wow, this is absolutely spectacular.

I love it when not only the lyrics of the song tell a story, but the music does as well.

The beginning of the song is the regular "move-up-in-the-ranks" music, which moves into the "knock-down" music splashed with a bit of the "training-in-a-pink-sweatsuit" music, then moves into the "no-continues" music, which all fits perfectly with the lyrics.

Take away the fact that it's a ReMix, and it's still an incredible song on its own.

Score: 1,000,000 points

And here I thought they only used the fight theme. I had been listening to this awesome remix for awhile now and had only thought that GO only used the the theme playing during the fight. And also after reading this quote and playing the song, all of the different tunes used while playing punch out are starting to come back to me.

I just downloaded this song after reading all the reviews, thinking it can't be as good as some of the Final Fantasy Remixes, and on top of that, I'm not a fan of rock.

But after hearing the song, I think my views on rock have changed drastically. This song is a perfect remix. Excellent singing and lyrics, even though, I do despise lyrics in music. Wow, I'm loving this. Easily in my top 5 OC Remix list.

PS: Love the guitar solo @ 2'05".

WOW this songs feels like be thrown to the floor by one of Mr. Dream's punches, and in there I can feel my defeat when the game over song played with an amazing guitar. This song is great and is quickly becoming one of my favorites even though I am usually opposed to voice in instrumental music, but this one is so so GOOD, I give it a 10!

great song with explosive energy and kick ass guitar solos abound. I like the intro a lot and the first solo after the first chorus. Great lyrics that stick with you for quite a while. However, you have to laugh at the mispronounciation of a few of the words to fit the meter. (barrage, Goliath, etc.). Heard some of Game Over's other stuff, and I can't wait to hear more.

Haha, yeah, that's actually quite funny. The reason why this happened was because, when I wrote the lyrics, I had the original melody in mind. Try singing it with the right pronuniciation for Goliath - it works fine! But then Christine, who came up with the vocal melodies, said: "I can make a much better melody!" and I said: "Go ahead!" But then of course, Goliath didn't fit in anymore... :)

Am I the only one who noticed the "KO" sound effect, followed by the "getting up" (and of course, Game Over music at the end) tune, and then a return to the fight, occurring three times in the song? Kudos to Game Over, that's a badass little notion that makes this song all the cooler. It really feels like you're playing the game and granted all three allowed knockouts. The little instrumental interlude after the 'Getting Up' tune at 2:21 feels like L'il Mac's getting back up for another round and lasting a little longer this time, only to go down again.

Awesome stuff.

Even in the face of overwhelming support for this song, I still have to stick my guns and voice my discontent with it.

If you looked up cheesy in the audio encyclopedia, you'd stumble across this song. I don't know, to me boxing should exude toughness, and these lyrics just don't reflect that. "Apprehensions becoming real" has no place in the squared circle. You don't have time to think of something that deep when your eye socket is being shattered from a left hook. These lyrics are way too deep and cheesy for this sort of thing. The gratuitous use of "Let's keep it clean, Punch Out!!" doesn't help much either.

I know quality can be an issue but this needs more backbone musically. It sounds way too flimsy. As far as 80's metal goes, Manowar would frown on this as "false metal."

Cheesy, Flimsy??!!?? I couldn't disagree with Mikeuppercut more. This song has become my favorite OCRemix song for the last year (at least!). Game Over is original (well, as original as you can be while remixing) and has put a lot of thought into the theme of their lyrics. I don't see a whole lot of remixers using original lyrics in their work, so I give Game Over a 10 out of 10 (again and again).

If you looked at the title... and listened to the lyrics, and put it into the cotnext of the "get up! get up!" meledy at the end, you'd realize that this was a song about failure.. specifically Mac's.

And we've ALL been there before playing this game. So the lyrics fit (even if they are a bit deep.. though maybe one can assume Mac is looking back on all this after his loss?)

btw, this Perry Bible Fellowship comic comes to mind:

I've loved this song since I first heard it, but as a drummer, I have complaints, mainly that the drums sound really, really fake, I'm not sure if they used a drum machine or an electronic set, but I'm guessing it's the former due to my next complaint, which is this....where are the Tom fills. I hear cymbals, base, and snare, but no tom work at all. There are parts of this song that scream for it, but nothing happens.

Nevertheless, this song kicks ass, and is great, one of, if not, the best I've heard on this site

though a largely insignificant matter, is there an unspoken rule that a track requires tom work?

or is this just a drummer talking?

I hope people are emailing this song to Red Octane, Harmonix, or whoever they need to, for inclusion in Guitar Hero 3

srsly

I thought I should just let you know that Game Overs first demo was indeed recorded with programmed drums. Their new demo is recorded with live drums, and of course it sounds great! Hyrule´s Angel, found on this site, is a taste of what´s on their latest, "Nesperado".

To comment on Little Mac´s Confession, it´s certainly an immortal classic that defines the "Nintendo Metal" genre... Too good to be true.

I know quality can be an issue but this needs more backbone musically. It sounds way too flimsy. As far as 80's metal goes, Manowar would frown on this as "false metal."
I put a challenge to you. Rewrite this song from the perspective of a 'true' boxer in Swedish.

Solid stuff, once of the classics. More artists should be willing to use the "Game Over" theme like Game Over did here. There's lot of other cool little themes within the game.

Mainly it's a drummer talking.....I mean, they're right there in front of you. Toms aren't there to just look pretty.

2002? I saw this get posted, and after all these years, it's still my favorite remix on OCR.

Game Over, thanks so much for this song (and for your others!)-- I really hope you keep making remixes.

100% Classic OCR track right here. The ring bell count in was spectacular. Great riffing, a good solo, and really nice vocals combined with a great arrangement make this one stand the test of time.

****, this is good.

I just LOVE this style of metal. The lead is not overbearing (except during the solos, of course), and the guitar sounds very clean for a change... The Game Over theme used as an intro was an efficient and smart idea.

I also enjoy the singer's accent, it has an odd quality of being slighty "funny" and wickedly cool at the same time. Damn, this track is too amazing, can't wait to hear other tracks from Game Over.
