MAGFest 5 (http://www.magfest.org)
Thursday, January 4th - Sunday, January 7th, 2007
At the Sheraton Premiere in Vienna, Virginia
MAGFest? What the heck is that?
Why, only the best music and gaming festival this side of the USA... This year is the 5th anniversary, and it's looking bigger and better than ever. Brendan somehow managed to book an absolutely beautiful hotel for the event, the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Corner (http://specialoffers.starwoodhotels.com/Sheraton_Premiere_Tysons_Corner/SO.htm?PS=PS_aa_Google_sheraton_premiere_at_tysons _corner_Creative1_050906_NAD_FM), equipped with an indoor pool, jacuzzi, fitness room, and sauna. (Plus free parking!)
What is there to do?
Concerts- The musical performances are what make MAGFest so freaking awesome. There's already a great lineup of video game bands this year: The Minibosses with Jenova Project, Shawn Phase, Smash Brothers, Sprite Slowdown (Chromelodeon's video game department), Wave Theory, Concertneskimos, Parasprinter, Powerglove, Search Snake, and This Place is Haunted!
Gaming- A huge 24-hour gameroom with tournaments, as well as a 24-hour LAN room!
Costume contest- Self-explanitory. :P
Panels- This year's panel lineup will play a large role in the festival activities:
OCR will be giving a panel at 4:00 pm on Friday the 5th, featuring some site history, music (duh), trivia with prizes, and live performances. Immediately following will be a meetup in the lounge!
And, of course, there will be other panels on geeky topics featuring artists, authors, and comedians of video game culture. How do I sign up?
You should preregister to attend MAGFest (http://www.magfest.org/section.php?7) if you wanna save money, and the sooner the better! Unless you live close to the location site, I would also recommend booking your hotel room (http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/booking/reservation?id=0606230011&key=EE6D0) well in advance. It's cheaper (and more fun) to split with a few other people. As I understand it, all the rooms this year will have two double beds, so 4 is an ideal number for rooming groups. If you're really strapped for cash, though, and wanna squeeze in more, there's always the floor.
All that being said, I'm going to do my best to keep the following lists updated, so you can see who's coming. That should help with organizing carpools, rooming groups, and such. If you're looking for a ride or roommate and people don't respond in here, try PM. Just a couple requests:
Anyone who's driving to the event (and has room for more) should post in here with their travel info!
Let's not let the dream die for those who are transportationless.
Once you've figured out who you're rooming with, please let me know either in the thread or by PM!
Last year, it was hard to keep track of who was around from OCR because we were relatively scattered about. I know *I* don't wanna miss out on meeting any of you lovely people, so this should help.
OMG SEE U THAR! :)!!

I was just looking for you. I really need to know this soon.
Anyway, add us to the room list: Xerol, Aaron, Garian, and possibly Suzu. I'm all willing to squeeze a fourth/fifth if they bring a sleeping bag or something, since I'm barely able to afford going as it is, so splitting the room up an extra way will help more.

Also, are we perhaps making this topic too early? I mean it is still two months away.

We wanna allow people as much time as possible to register, book rooms, and plan travel arrangements. It's a big event, and will most likely be the largest OCR meetup to date.
Kitsuta
10-04-2006, 04:11 AM
I'm coming.
I'm probably rooming with entirely different people from OCR and noone else. Besides, the only two people I'd room with already have plans. :P
As for riding.. ugh, I dunno. My sister and her husband are a pain in the ass when it comes to making plans. I'll just say I can take one, MAYYYYYYYYYYBE two people. We've got a definite three in the carpool already. Er, two. Definite two.
In other words, rides are up in the air. I live near Raleigh/Cary/Apex/wtfh NC.
Geoffrey Taucer
10-04-2006, 04:16 AM
Kitsuta, don't forget I'm taking one of those spots in that car -- or had you already factored that in?

10-04-2006, 04:44 AM
Man, I really wish I could make it this year. I mean, I don't even live that far away! Unfortunately I have exams the Monday after the thing ends, so I need to stay here.
Tell Brendan I said hi.... and that Linux is for NEWBS!

Kitsuta, don't forget I'm taking one of those spots in that car -- or had you already factored that in?
No, I hadn't, because we don't know if we are taking you or not. You said you had a ride without us. If you came, would he have to come too? That might be too many people.
As I said, all up in the air. I don't even know if James is riding with us. I emailed him but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.
Broken: Brendan's not on right now, but I'll pass on the message.

Kit, I'll be riding with you if you have room.
NC_Dave
10-04-2006, 06:11 AM
Mentioned it in the original thread but wanted to post it here just in case -
I'll have a few seats open so if anyone within a reasonable distance of a Charlotte-Raleigh-Richmond-DC route needs a ride, just let me know!
Kitsuta
10-04-2006, 06:28 AM
Kit, I'll be riding with you if you have room.
It's a deal. I just got James' mail(from 8 hours ago.. curse you Gmail!) and he's not really planning on spending any time here in NC. Things should be simple in this case - we can pick him up after we arrive at the con, and drop him off at the airport before we leave. So that's definitely an extra seat in the car. Although we might have to have five people in the car at once. Eesh.
I dunno, we might end up taking two cars. That'd probably be a royal pain, though.
Geoffrey Taucer
10-04-2006, 01:24 PM
I said if you have room. If having me along will force you to take two cars, I can get another ride.

If Anime Expo taught me anything, it's that you can never plan too early for a convention.

Yeah, the sooner you make your plans the better.
PLANE TICKETS DO NOT GET CHEAPER THE CLOSER YOU BUY THEM TO THE DATE OF THE FLIGHT!
Some people have this misconception and it has prevented them from missing out on good times. Buy your plane tickets as soon as possible.
Also, I'm not 100% going, but there are a lot of people like Ailsean, X-Strike Studios, etc. Check out the forums on VGMix to find a bigger list of attendees.
Soap Box:
If you want to go but don't think you can because of money, and if you have a driver's license and a little discipline, don't miss this. Really. Go get a job at a Mom 'n' Pop restaurant or something for a month. Part Time. Save all that money and you'll have enough for a plane ticket. And then from there keep the job (because working builds character - well, for most) and get at least $100 for food on your trip (and for merchandise if you want T-Shirts, band CDs, games, etc.). So you fly out from whatever airport and land in D.C. You can call the hotel and they'll send a shuttle for free to come and get you (but always tip your driver - it's a personal service). You can always crash out on someone's floor. And as long as you don't get belligerently drunk, you're going to have a good time. Video Game Music nerds are probably the absolute coolest, low-drama, fun loving people you can rock with it. Egos are tossed out the window (except for mine because it's so freakin' big) and everyone can hang out, have a blast, and the in-joke just start blowing up like a volcano.
So don't have a "can't do" attitude. It's totally worth the experience of going and hanging out with these like-minded nerds if you want to do it in the slightest.
Nevermind the fact that you'll be seeing ten bands(or at least musical acts) that are playing live video game music.
And there's no video game music concert that has more to offer than MAGFest.

Good times!

This sounds pretty awsome, I wish I could go. However, I have to use money for other things... school.. Next year though... I am going to try to go.
Alright kids? Go to MAGFest, because MUSTIN SAID SO!
Anyway, I don't know why pixietrix put me on the "possibly attending" list. Probably wishful thinking on her part. Although I suppose anyone could be "possibly attending." Unless they broke free of earth's gravity and are hurtling through space towards the sun. Then it's a pretty safe bet they won't be attending.
Did I really type all that?

10-05-2006, 07:43 PM
Hey, I'd like to go. But I have no idea about traveling or housing options. It'd be great if someone could I could carpool with someone. If anyone wants to share a room, I wouldn't even mind sleeping on the floor. I'm more worried about the getting there and coming back then finding a place to sleep right now.
Can anyone clear up what sort of options I have? I live around NYC, but I think at the time of the festival, I'd be in New Jersey...
In the meanwhile, I'll see if any one of my friends wants to come with and see if I can pressure him into driving down with me. 8O

Thanks for the advance heads-up: we're talking a serious amount of planning on my part, especially since I dunno what's going on when in this fest. My big issue is getting someone to look after pops while I'm away for this long weekend. Once I work that out, I'm a definite.
So now...
The plan is to take Friday off from work and arrive in the afternoon, then to leave Sunday afternoon... that's as much time as I can probably spare.
Depending on the availability of a ride from NYC, I may take an Amtrak to wherever is closest, and may need a small ride from there.
Whether anyone can spare room for me, or four of us get another room, I can spare up to $120 for us.
I'll be sure not to miss the panel. How's these panels work? Will OCR's be on one day, or every day of this thing? Anything I can contribute?

Just an update on my room: It's full. It was crowded with 3 people last year, and splitting it 5 ways is going to push it.
Definites: Xerol, Aaron, Garian
Possible: Bahamut, Suzumebachi, fivre
I'm pretty sure two of those 3 possibles are going. If not, then I will have a slot open, but that'll come up at the end of the month.

I might be going. That's a big might. I'm getting ready to ship off to Hawaii, so if I go, it's going to cost me a small fortune. HOWEVER! I am about to receive my hefty college bonus from the Navy (5 grand), and that might allow me to go. Was planning on using it to buy a V-Synth XT, but going to MAG again would be a far better time than I could ever have with a new piece of hardware. Only time will tell. A couple things have to fall into place for me to be able to go:
1.) I have to be able to put in a request for leave for those days.
2.) My bonus needs to be given to me all at once (or I'll need to do some SERIOUS planning).
3.) Upon arrival, people must fall before me and lick my boots.

My immediate future is clearer, so my plans have changed. It follows the worst kind of news at my end, however:
after caring for my pops since March (terminal colon cancer), he passed away early Thursday morning.
I expected to leave my father with friends for 3 days, coming to MAGFest on Friday, but held off on travel
plans because of the possibility the end for him was nearing. Well, it's happened, so I intend to be at
the Fest from the beginning... not to mention get those days off approved for Jan. 4 and the NYC meetup,
bring my mic back home, and get back to my music production, which I've had to completely shut down
for several months during all this. Oh, and update my web site. Thanks for everyone's patience.

Brendan is actually planning on designating official "meetup" times for OCR, in the lounge, to help people get to know each other. They'll probably happen on Friday and Saturday afternoons. A lot of us already know each other, and I'm sure people will spots others in OCR shirts, but I'll post those times whenever he schedules them.

Minibosses and Jenova Project will not be playing this year, but Armcannon and Year 200x have been added to the bill. If you'd want to update that post, that is.
The loss of the minibosses this year is quite unfortunate, but great times will still be had in the concert room for sure!

NEW NEWS!
First of all, there will be no big panel with all the videogame remixing communities. I tried to organize something, but everyone seems too busy to get involved, and it's tough over the internet.
Secondly, the OCR panel will be at 4:00pm on Friday the 5th, followed immediately by a meetup in the lounge!

Yep, there's gonna be an OCR panel, and basically identical to the Otakon format. Dave, Larry, Andy and I are going to present it, and if any other judges are present they'll probably be involved in one way or another. We're going to add/change a few source tune and remix examples, focus a little less on site history, and more on things a slightly more clued-in audience will appreciate.
You should ask Dave if he wants to perform your collab again!

The OCR panel is at 4:00 pm on Friday, and there will be an official meetup in the lounge after that, so 5:00. If you miss that, too, just look for someone in an OCR shirt! It's pretty tight-knit, even though it's technically a "convention" of sorts. As Taucer said, we can just introduce each other to other OCR folk.

MAGFest 5 was the most awesome community experience ever. Everyone was incredibly cool. Thanks for a fucking RAD weekend, nerds! I had a blast running sound with norg and SnappleMan for all of the freakin' concerts (so many!!!).
There were so many awesome moments (pixie, where's the virt, Mustin, djp pic?!?), but my favourite would have to be after the last concert on Saturday - Joe_Cam taking myself, Richter, Snapple, norg, etc. to get McD's and just getting back to the hotel to sit down and eat in slow motion (like the end of Harold & Kumar). It was just so good and a great time to reflect on all of the awesomeness (I had been up and working for close to 24 hours at that point, which is something I don't usually do).
Thanks again. It was great to buy djpretzel a beer after all of this time.

There was also a policy at MAGfest that no pictures or video could be taken without the consent of the filmed, I think. This wasn't really enforced to the extent that you had to like sign something before having your picture taken, but if you saw someone take your picture at a really embarrasing moment, you could legally make them delete that picture from the camera.

Not to prod this topic, but from what I can tell, he only went because it was close to his house. After he got there, he posted saying that he wasn't impressed with the con, so he got the bright idea to insult everyone there. And my favorite message board was shut down because of it. Thanks alot. :/

Absolutely.
What was best was when they first shook hands. Jake walked into the room without knowing dave was there, Dave didn't realize jake had walked in, but EVERYBODY else knew. The room went briefly silent, then immediately there was a buzz of murmering and whispering from everybody in the room. We even sent Jill to the other side of the room so she could take a picture that might include both of them. It ended up being unnecessary; the two eventually shook hands, and immediately the room erupted in applause. We'll post pics.
As far as I can tell, their feud appears to be over.

Thanks for the hefty helping of off-topic posts, folks.
Anyway...
Glad to say that I was once again able be at MAGFest for a rockin' good time. The company was wonderful (and oh so amuse-- oooo, pretty green laser!), the bands were pretty sweet (despite the requisite level issues), and the times were all around quite fun. Hey, and even the musicians that never had a concert were awesome to hear... like listening to Darangen, Taucer, Mephisto, and LuiZa just jammin' it up. And I've got a couple new CDs waiting to be listened and ripped. Squee! ^^
Always interesting to see the costumes people create, although unfortunately, there seemed to be much fewer than in the past (despite the higher number in attendance). But those few were notable, from a well-done WoW-eared elf to a skimpy moogle girl to a red shirt officer from ST:TNG! The last was a bit of a neat surprise, and unfortunately the other Star Trek fans I knew weren't anywhere around when I saw him. D:
Also... not to dis OCR, certainly... but virt's VGMix 3 plans look wonderfully ambitious. Would make for a great complement to the community if everything is implemented well.
So many memorable things. Who can forget, late at night, the 10 or so people standing at the McDonald's drive thru, all while Shael insisted on the illegality of such a indisputably immoral action. :p Or the OCR panel's own "insensitivity" towards its own man of another color! Letting an Oji hand out white T-shirts... really! Must ye be so degrading? ;) Or seeing Mustin, virt, and djpretzel all get together without any malicious drama. :) And of course, meeting -- some again, some newly -- so many other fellow OCR fans and participants... sharin' the love of some good music.

Makes me wish I had attended... but I had work, and a lot of College Entrance stuff going on at the moment... Maybe next year
Jake did walk in knowing he was in there - he asked me to introduce him since I was neutral. I told pixie to get the camera ready and then bam.
Yo, I was nervous as all hell, really didn't know what to expect at all. Sure enough, it was a great moment. Kicked off my Magfest High something fierce.
Panels were awesome, seeing you guys rock the hell out at the shows was awesome, and it was awesome to see just how down to earth everyone is, no matter how much water is under the bridge.
I'll save the ambitious community spiel for another time; I just want to say ROCK ON, and let's keep on in this good spirit. Our shared love of great music (and Killian's) is what matters.
As soon as I can get a moment, I'll put up all the details I showed in our panel. Feedback was supergreat, I'd love some more.

Big, fat, loud, exhausting, cool, busy, relaxing, painful, fun, amazing.
Dave (pretz), Larry (Lion), Don (Jiggles) and myself made a hell of a team throughout the event. I absolutely appreciate hanging out with them, and with everyone else. I told Don that laser was bringing in the chicks! ;) Props also to the Prophet, Rama, Shael and Devon, virt, pixie, zirc, q-pa, Snapple, Joe Cam, Derangen, Mogrothir and his babe Melanie, Tauce, Must, Richter, Bah, fivre, and everyone else I forgot.
Photos will come later, in DJSammy's thread in GenDisc.
looks like lots of fun, hopefully I can attend next year. :D
I demand more photos to entertain me at work tomorrow!
Minions, bring them forth!
I just got back myself (ended up going 40 miles the wrong way on the PA Turnpike http://www.ocremix.org/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif ).
But what a rockin' time! It was my 2nd meetup and my 1st convention. The bands were hardcore, VGMix 3 is coming, "Nerds in a Pool," Dragon's Lair love, Smash Brothers 1 and 2 as was said, and just so much community <3 !
I'll post my picts asap; probably tomorrow.

Yeah, this has easily been one of the most amazing and awesome experiences ever - there were just so many great things going on. Dave and Jake shaking hands, good music (Smash Brothers is my favorite of the performers, although others were great too with some unexpectedly solid ones like Armcannon), and overall great times.

So that's everything! Mods, feel free to merge my posts (if that's possible).
I must reiterate what everyone else said: this was truly a MAGFest to remember. I went last year and had an awesome time, but this year was so amazing that I'm still trying to sort through all of my memories. At last, all the remixing communities came together. It no longer felt like we had to avoid each other, or that everything was divided into cliques.
I'll be perfectly honest; lately, I've been feeling like this community isn't really worth the time and effort I've been devoting to it. A lot of stuff goes on in the forums and in the various IRC chats that would never fly in real life, and this past weekend was a perfect example of that. But being amongst you guys, and seeing everyone get along across the boards is inspiring. Really, it's one of the only things that keeps me going on ocremix. So thanks for the great times!
EDIT:
My pics start on page 19. Just wanted to make sure you don't miss the first half!

I made a forum account and literally posted two comments, so my presence at MAGfest was the first time I'd really become acquainted with the personalities behind the music, and pretty much every other site that had representation there. OCR was the only organization there with which I'd had any prior familiarity, apart from the site which I was representing, the Chrono Trigger Novel Project, or CTNP (www.chronotrigger.info).
I didn't really introduce myself to many people (though I did talk to DJ Pretzel and Liontamer, who seemed interested in the CTNP). To me, it seemed like such an established community already that breaking into it right then and there would have been difficult. However, I did attend the panel, and those there will probably remember me as the guy who sung Sonic 1 tunes to get an OCR T shirt. Just so you all know, I really can sing better than that. I do chorus and all that good stuff.
Funny story about that shirt, actually. Adam Poots, an Atari employee, was tasked with making a video about MAGfest and presenting it to his company. In looking for an OCR higher-up, he approached Brendan, who pointed him in my direction. Apparently, because I'd been hanging out near the OCR community and I was wearing the shirt I'd won, I looked to be an OCR higher-up, which was fairly flattering. But no, I am no OCR higher-up. At least not yet. But with all that said, I am looking to get more involved in the community. I have all the soft synths and programs I'll need, but I am lacking in knowledge, experience and a MIDI keyboard. So I'm hoping I can fix those first two fairly easily and soon.
Overall, MAGfest was awesome and I'd love to return. Hopefully next year I'll be more aware of exactly who everyone is and won't be as shy in approaching people.

BTW...did anyone meet-up with LuIzA? I recall her saying that she was going to be there...strange that you didn't have a pic with her or anything, Pixie.
I ran into her a couple of times, including at the mall nearby.
I believe I got a picture taken with her and akumu at one point.

Awesome! Thanks, there are some great ones in there. Is it cool if I use some of those on my band's myspace? I'll say taken by "Richiter" or something to that extent. :)
I'm still a noob on these forums and therefore didn't really know anyone here well enough to recognize them by face nor username, unfortunately. Asides from snappleman, I met him and he is a very cool dude.

Look in Pixie's pics (page 19), he is wearing the "STOKED" T-shirt.
Sadly he and I only met briefly
and I was near the back in that panel so I didn't get to meet you.
I too am fairly new having been a fan since 2001 and member of the community in 2004. I don't post much, because I usually don't have anything to contribute to threads, but I'm gonna start getting more involved.

Does MAGFest come at the exact same time every year? 'Cause I'm looking at my spiffy college-merch calendar, and it says winter classes begin on Wednesday the 3rd, not, say, Wednesday the 10th.

Magfest winds up falling on different dates each year, because hotel rates can change a lot and Brendan likes to pick when it isn't too expensive. He goes with the flow.
