View Full Version : Reunion (Free Netlabel) News Thread

A friend of mine has started a site where he has gathered a bunch of musicians to release original electronic music. It was originally intended only for Trackers, but it became a general electronic "netlabel", where everything is released for free. They release music in a quite steady pace for being a startup, and they are probably interested in hearing new interesting music from a few people from this community. Unfortunately, they are quite unknown so far. So without further ado, here is their link: http://www.reunionstudio.org
BREAKING NEWS!!
Now they have a torrent up and running! Check it out now for the first 30 songs in one handy package :)
http://www.reunionstudio.org/Reunion_0-30_Torrent.rar.torrent
My fave around these songs is "Gasoline" (so far), by "the platonist" (who is incredible with impulsetracker). It sounds like a typical good game-song and i can imagine a 2D landscape of cool platforming when i hear it.
What do you people think ? Also, if you people have any good links to similar sites, bring em on! Im always interested in finding new good music out there.
Btw, for those who didnt know, im normally known as GaMeBoX around here, but my account dont work at the mo.

I'll be checking this out
It'd be nice if the site offered the songs in their original formats [like .it] so I can save a bit of space :) down with MP3!
Are you going to have full EP/album releases in the future?
I checked out Storm by Freeman and your recommended track, Gasoline, and this is actually some decent dance music. Thanks for plugging this.

Electronic netlabel? Cool. Releasing the music for free? Eh... not as appealing to me. You guys should do compilation albums at least.

Hey man :) Tell me more about your view on this.. I can understand that single tracks may not appeal as much as albums or other compilations. What about the free part ? why not, and what alternatives are there really ? What are your thoughts.. ?

Nothing wrong with being capitalist. ;)
I just think that if we, as musicians, invest lots of our own time into original material - plus money for gear - there's no reason we shouldn't ask for people to pay for it. You could always do something like... have a rotating list of free MP3 singles @ 128kbps on the main page, then periodically release a compilation CD of 15 songs or so and price it reasonably at say $9.99. You could then get the CDbaby hook up so you wouldn't have to worry about shipping, OR if you don't really want to go the physical route, send them one copy and sign up for their free digital distribution. That way you can get the label's music all over iTunes and tons of other online music shops. Free promo, and you get 81 cents to the dollar. Alternatively, set up a Paypal shop (also free) where people could pick up higher-encoded MP3s or even WAV/FLAC versions of the tracks with a small donation. There are lots of ways.
As a CONSUMER sure I like free stuff. And really, if you just want to give away your hard work, I can understand that too. But it's not appealing to some people to invest a lot of time into something that they won't get anything for. This is sort of the case with me. I make ReMixes which are by nature free, and I have fun doing 'em. I don't expect a penny. For original stuff, on the other hand, I spend more time & money and I would prefer not to just give that away; or at a minimum, not ALL of it (I have given away free downloads before).

Good post man, i totally agree with what you say. I will link up "the platonist" who started reunionstudio to this thread. I had a similar idea about a year ago with my domain bitmapstereo.com where we would release some free songs and sell albums/compilations, unfortunately i stopped when i couldnt afford to get a copy of photoshop..But i have the shop system up and running with an e-commerce service that is usually for software, but works for any kind of files, where i can take creditcard or paypal, + they can send a physical CD as well i think, with cover art.. One question; Have you seen anybody do this and actually have it working, ie, people buy music? Any links ?

Well look at this .. hmm yeah dolber there is a site called Subco @ www.subco.org . they also release music for free, but with EPs instead of single tracks as we do . And also Zircon :P I'd like to make some money out of my musicmaking too, but since you have to start somewhere, Reunion is a good idea. What i do now is simply a project, something to kill my free time with. I hope i'll get more "serious" in the future, not that i really care but still :)
Addition: i don't give everything away either, you know this is 2 tracks of my approx 900 pieces i've written over the years ..
well anyway, before judging , take a listen, won't ya? :)

Hey, I like this latest track quite a bit.
It's quite a step away from what GaMeBoX has done before, and that's great. Still, even with the laid back style you can hear his distinctive solos in there. Excellent track.
I submitted one of my own, just for the hell of it.
GaMeBoX
02-02-2007, 07:11 AM
Thats right. I held my promise to release at 1st Feb. Im really happy with the results, and as a response to the info section at reunion, yes, the solos are, as always (and as most of everything in my songs) live recorded.. All controllers is hooked up to the pitchstick. So i have a setup of Left: -2 semitones, Right: +2 semitones, Up: Wah-wah/Filter cuttoff Depending on wich sound. The first one is a cool moster lead type, with wahwah. The second one is a smooth moog-like sound. Enyoy :)

Not really. A lot of netlabels (http://kahvi.org/) do packs (http://www.mono211.com/index.html) of music (http://www.ronincollective.com/) as their main (http://hellven.org/) releases. But as you say it's basically one continuous song, so this doesn't really matter.

Hey there folks.
after 6 months online i think it's time to reveal some ideas and whatever about this project.
We're currently working on our real design. A friend of mine is working as fast as he can as he's in London atm working with school and stuff. So delay has been quite obvious - it was originally ment to happen before 2007.
Anyway we're currently looking for alot of things.
I'm gonna apply for a new webhotel in the near future.
Right now Nekativ is in charge of that .. At the time when that finishes SGX will also help hosting the files on his server.
When this happens we will also redo the whole filearchive
placing the mp3s in .zip files along with some other convenient information. This was the original intention but since Scene.org
hasn't had their apply dir opened for such a long time i figured it's time to do it on our servers instead..
Right now GaMeBoX is the one hosting the files on his www.liquiddog.net site .. great thanks to him for that
Reunion will probably evolve in the near future from being a pure netlabel to becoming more of a mediacenter. Releasing not only music but also other forms of art. A gallery is already in development - where another kind of members will upload their art. ofcourse i'm the one who'll decide what comes on or not.
the forum will be a scener-forum with a lot of different sections
such as general netlabel talk and reunion feedback.
I'll try to keep the link section as slick as possible with only the important and helping sites - to avoid a big mess.
We'll try to make all this as simple and easy as possible with RSSfeeds and a clean layout.
that's all the revelations i have for now..
please come with opinions or general feedback on our site
here on the OCforum untill we get our own forum launched ..
would be nice to hear from you people what you think of us..
Thanx and Laterz

Also, if think you have what it takes to release something at reunion, dont be shy, contact Platonist and submit some material ! Old or new, doesnt matter, the important part is getting cool fresh music out to people ! We want reunion to grow to a collective of creative minds willing to experiment and explore new territory! If anybody has feedback on the sites new look, its also very welcome! As said, a "shoutbox" functionality is in the works so hopefully youll be able to leave your footprints there soon!

Nice, Steve. Portal is still probably my favorite but this is a great jam nonetheless. I always like to hear more of your tracks.

hey! (jag skriver på engelska om det är någon annan som undrar ;) ))
first you have to send me an email with the tune in it - you can find the adress on the site.
then i have to judge your music and give you good or bad news..
IF THE NEWS IS GOOD and when the time is ready the tune will be put on the site, then if you want to be a guest releaser that's fine
but if you feel like joining we have to be more specific .. this is the part where msn is more convenient .. we'll go there as soon as i can give you the "GREAT STUFF!" reply --
peace out / Platonist

-ONE YEAR ANIVERSARY-
I can't believe it but, Reunion has been online for a whole year today! This will be celebrated with something very special. Let's travel back in time to the year 2002, when we were on the way up. Today, we honor our past and look into the future; we release our first ALBUM!
Remember 2002 LP is avaialble through Torrent AND Direct Download for those who can't use torrents. But PLEASE do use the torrent if you can, it would ease our servers from alot of pain.
