Only tomorrow? Shame on you, man, shame on you!
I'm currently getting it via torrent, and i'll leave it on to help seeding for sure. I remember hearing WIPs for a few of the songs that are on that project, and i doubt people will be decieved by it. Congrats to anyone who worked on this! :D

It runs on WMP. All I did was change the tags so they'd show up in the folder it was stored in.
But regardless.. use something else.
Anyways- unsurprisingly, house and Snapp's songs are the best ones yet.

And it was totally worth it! The styles were all over, but each one was well done. I don't think there was a track I didn't like!

I agree with Overcoat...a couple songs didn't sit well with me, but overall, I'm impressed...Every single track holds a unique arrangement, only beef was with some production flubs, and a few poor sample choices.

Though yeah I am pretty much favoring all the guitar wank over everything else so far :]

yeah, guitar wankery is always nice :P
I was really impressed with Kanjika's work. Although the pieces were a bit on the quiet side, the arrangement on both pieces was very polished and strong.
Changing the subject, what do you think of Snapple's intros?

Its great how mixed up alot of it is. Perhaps I'm saying that because Knuckleduster is where I'm up to, and people are saying that's one of the more mixed tracks (great btw). Nevertheless, all the tracks I've heard are sounding like they've had alot of thought put into them so they really stand out as new music.
I'm sad that of the 16 teaser tracks, only 14 are available.. I really wanted to hear that Sir Nuts one. :(
Excellent work anyway guys.
Edit - 2 tracks later - And God bless you for some original Icecap... and purely piano.. so good and deliberating.. thank you so much.

This project is totally worth it for Scrambled Eggman alone. It's now one of my favorite remixes ever. Each remix is good or great overall. The rock / metal ones are the ones that I like best.

This was worth the wait and then some. The original tunes from allt he Sonic games populate my iPod, all providing me with nostalgia and each bringing forth a particular memory or feeling when I hear them. But the ones that get the most air time are probably the Sonic 3 & Knuckles themes by far. The best game in the series, (alongside Sonic CD) and by far it contains the most fitting music that really tell the story.
The remix you guys have created don't just mimic the originals, nor do they simply play off the tunes. These interpretations actually seek out the themes and builds upon them. The original tune is still definitely evident, (which is desirable - nobody wants a theme they can't recognize), but you've also expanded on them and really utilized them to the fullest. I love the variation between hard rock and sweeping epic...ness.
In fact the songs inspired me so much ("Secluded Stronghold" made me cry ;_; )I just had to work on an original piece of S3&K art. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/43203126/
Thanks for a fantastic soundtrack. It's a work of art.

Thank God it's out! I tried waiting up, but I said screw it. But that just let me get a nice present for waking up!
Fantastic work, might I add. I had to listen to Hydrochill first, as it was my most anticipated song on the entire list. But then I gave the rest of you a chance. And you didn't disappoint, either. If Sega ever made a S3&K remake, the songs would have to sound like this.
Keep up the good work in the future on whatever you do. All of you.

I'd been following your Sky Sanctuary mix back when the WIPs were about on VGMix. Back then, it was one of my favourite mixes. Now, you have truly gone above and beyond - a masterpiece!
And top work all round from everyone!

This album has really outdone itself. Great work by everyone. I have a few favorites, but I really don't think it's fair to single out people because this album is just so awesome overall. There are so many different styles here that even the most picky listener could find at least one track they enjoy.
Quality isn't outdone by quantity here; these are all great tracks.
special thanks to the people doing this project, as I have been listening to this all night while I've been writing an essay that's due now in...6... hours. It's kept me sane and relaxed during the one all nighter writing session

I want the teaser site's background tracks tooooo... :(
I think I should clear up what happened here. There were something like 15 tracks on the teaser site, and we all held a vote-off for a top 5 that would be added to the project.
The top 5 voted were:
Rayza's Azure Lake 14
Aku - water on the dancefloor 13
Hadyn - Heads Up For Tails 12
Kanjika - credits 8
Gamebox - Ice Cap 4 Life (WIP) 7
And Lava Passion/Hydrochill were also added as an extra bonus.
The other teaser tracks will be made available eventually, but they're not part of the official project and thus will have their own, separate release when we decide the time's right =)

Woohoo! Even those WIPs were top-notch. For months I had the teaser site open at work with the songs looping all day long. I was hoping that they would eventually all come out in downloadable form.
I'm at work unfortunately, so I can't download everything now :( Just a few tracks will have to do to sustain me until I get home tonight...

Neither Heads up for Tails nor Water on the Dancefloor play in iTunes. (I suspect none of the bonus WIPs will).

Neither Heads up for Tails nor Water on the Dancefloor play in iTunes. (I suspect none of the bonus WIPs will). The bonus mixes have non-standard (or broken?) headers, I had troubles with them as well. My Winamp recognizes them as 32000Hz tracks for no reason. Also some non-bonus tracks have broken tags, but I don't really care. I'm here for the music, not to read tags :p
Given that, iTunes sucks and you should grab another player.
Defend check your PMs :)
edit: Media Player Classic can't read the bonus tracks at all. Whoever encoded them didn't do a good work. Sorry to be rude, but this is a fact. Headers and tags are non-standard and/or broken too often.

housethegrate, you're getting better and better. Best track on the album!
For what could have been the nineth-twelfth time, my competition menu track is supposed to be labelled as Schumacher's Bar. Why do people forget the apostrophe and shizzle? :?
Either way, I'm glad it managed to come through. I heard some tracks by preview weeks ago, and went for Dan B's and GameBoX's stuff first on release. Tonight, I will hear the full thing and I will love you so much for working so hard on making this baby shine :D

Wow, I'm so psyched it's finally out! Here are some (not so) productive comments:
This seems to have a lot to offer. So many genres were covered and it seems like everyone excelled in their respective areas. I think pretty much all the songs I've been through so far do the originals more than justice. The two opening tracks were pretty tight, and very reminiscent. Divided from Grace was pretty cool. Walk on Water came across to me as somewhat unusual considering the artist, but in that regard was still very amazing. Knuckle Duster was pretty cool. I certainly wasn't expecting lyrics so that was actually a nice little surprise. Hetcenus deserves mad props for what he did with Ice Caps, it kind of gave me the urge to start a mosh pit, and I usually don’t get THAT excited over piano tracks. :P Just about all the synth tracks were pretty freaking cool, but I have to go back and hear them all again so I can make more specific comments. Also, I'd like to second this:
Kanjika...YOU FREAKIN' RULE!!!
I think that about says it all. I don’t think Sky Sanctuary will ever sound quite as good as it did in "Breathtaking Vision". And finally, my favorite track so far has been "The Doomsday", because it was so cool it nearly had me screaming like a girl in excitement.
This was overall some excellent music. All of you guys rock!

For what could have been the nineth-twelfth time, my competition menu track is supposed to be labelled as Schumacher's Bar.
I'm sorry for that, just corrected the tracklist on the website, although correcting the mp3 names would be really painful (uploading again, re-editing links, making an archive for like the 4th time), and it wouldn't match the torrent anymore.
Anyway, I already expressed my love to Hadyn and SnappleMan personnaly last week, but I'll make it more public.
I love every single track it that project. Every one of them is surprising in its way. I wasn't expecting such attempts at IceCap, Death Egg, Marble Garden...
Am I also the only listener to have noticed allusions to other Sonic games ? At 3:15 in Hetcenus' "That Freezing Feeling", you can clearly hear part of Volcano Valley Act 1&2 from Sonic 3D Blast.
I think Rexy also used the main menu/super Sonic theme in Divided from Grace.
Scrambled Eggman sounds a lot like some "Shadow of the Ninja" tune (especially at 2:35, that's almost exactly the same theme).
And I've been told so, but my brother instantly catched the Judas Priest cover at the end of Doomsday.
I actually played the whole game again with the tracks as background music, and it's awesome. Tension actually builds up. You may think that Death Egg track is kind of an outsider, but when you play the game, after an hour and a half or two hours, that freaking tracks gets to your nerves, slowly but surely preparing you to the upcoming arockalypse :).
I'm delighted, I'm glad for you, thank you all for these 2 hours of pure happiness.
I understand the strain it can get to re-hosting everything all over again. Still I'm glad it'll get corrected (again?) down the line if not already. Thank you.
oh and...
I think Rexy also used the main menu/super Sonic theme in Divided from Grace.
Indeed you got that right, but there's still more. From the top of my head there's about five or six other minor references fit in there.
Should I say that the first person to find about four of these gets a remix request?

Found a special stage reference around 2:30, and why does that part right after sound a lot like Ecco the Dolphin? That same track also ends with some Hydrocity notes.
I can't find anything else in Divided from Grace.
Beneath the Ashes also has some of Hidden Palace theme at the end, if I'm not mistaken. And Shumacher's Bar definitely has the Sonic 3 main menu theme at 1:52, and repeating some time after.

Great proj guys. The live instrument influence is def a nice touch and gives the proj a certain feel.
Gotta say I love house's track, funky and catchy guitar. Great stuff from Kanjika as well, guess he really had to hold up the orchestral goodness for this proj.
That lava reef track had me listening tons of times to see how you guys rearranged it. Def inventive and new.
Overall all the songs sound very well mastered too, guess all the hard work paid off. This whole proj has a very distinct feel to it.

Actually, I pointed this out in #ocremix a few minutes after the project's release, but everyone was like "OMG YOU LIE THE TRACKS ARE WORKING FINE".
Oh well, Winamp can read them anyway. Most of the times I get wrong titles and authors, but it's not a big issue.

Hello? Were you reading the thread?
I think it's obvious that I wasn't.Sorry, dude. I didn't really mean to be rude. But this issue really upsets me as well. What's the point in releasing a project with broken mp3s? Ok, it's a player-related issue, since some of them can read the tracks just fine, but a project should be 100% compatible. For people who use iTunes, Winamp, Quick Time, Real Player. And yes, even the black shit Windows Media Player. The bonus tracks won't play in Media Player Classic (at least, not the version I have).
I don't care to go against "the big guys". There is a problem here. It is a fact.
1: Several tags are missing the closing byte. So some players will read the tags as follows:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/1881/3964tx0.png
2: Some headers are broken. This causes some players to crash (iTunes, Media Player Classic):
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8486/8081jf3.png
Now, no one can force people to use a specific player. So the mp3s are to be re-encoded and re-tagged from 0.

I think my day's been made...
I have to compliment Rexy on the sequenced acoustic guitar solo in "Divided from Grace." Hot stuff.
Whoa, thanks - I thought I'd get shot down for that O.O
If it helps, I'm getting the real thing for Christmas, so the acoustic is becoming a bit of a passion at the mo.
I still think that my drums sound like they were processed in a washing machine, but nevermind. All's well that ends well :)

I echo this. Someone fix the tracks plz. I have to use iTunes cuz I don't feel like changing media players and everything (three ppl in the house have iPods, and the other two aren't computer-saavy).
and i want to hear my awful bonus track.
I fixed the tracks using a converter and now they work fine in iTunes, im uploading them to sendspace for you, and the link will be ready in a few minutes
Everything works just fine for me... except the occasional clicks from my crappy soundcard, but that's to be expected (Stupid useless Dell laptop soundcards...).
Finally... a remix project on this site that I not only like... I absolutely adore it. :P Project Chaos definitely gets the paws down vote of Best Project so far for me. XD This is most likely due to my typical genre biases, but hey, it's a really well-done project and I'm certainly impressed.
Great work to all those who contributed, Project Chaos will definitely be a treasure here on OC. :)

^^^ theres the fixed for itunes tracks
the only thing wrong is a short scratching sound at the beginnning of the track, which can easily be fixed by right clicking the song, then "get info" then "options" then switch the starting time to 0:00.06

I'll upload fixed tracks tomorrow (almost 1 am here). I'm quite busy right now, as exams are approaching.
Please be patient.
I didn't notice those crashes/bugs although I listened to the project on almost everything for almost a week : VLC (MacOS), iTunes (MacOS/Win), mediaplayer classic (Win), Windows Media Player 9/10/11, Quicktime (MacOS/Win), PowerDVD (Win), WinAmp, my own iPod nano... my brother has it on his low-end mp3 usb key...
That's kinda weird actually.

This project is just plain awesome. Excellent music, excellent site, excellent everything.
I'll probobly put up a full review later, but right now, just a few comments:
Walk on Water - wow. just. wow. words cannot describe how much I like this one.
Three Ring Nightfall - This is one of the mixes I'm most impressed with. I don't know much of anything about actual remixing, but to me, Carnival Night seemed like a theme I thought would be really tough to arrange for. But this mix was done really nicely, and is one of my favorites in this project. (plus, for some reason, the opening percussion makes me think of Sonic Rush)
Kanjika mixes - epic.
Before the Storm - doesn't sound at all like Death Egg, but it definitely is the Death Egg (though it took me a few listens to really make the clear connection). Another one that I can't stop listening to.

Hey, I'm glad you liked three ring nightfall! I feel all validated and stuff =P
It was certainly a weird track to take on, but i think most sonic music is. This one in particular took me a year to put together over all, including several phases including one point where it was actually destined to be a collaborative effort, with Ellywu2 mixing the drums. I still sort of feel that it would have been a better overall song if he'd stayed with me, but one day he just dissapeared from the net, and I haven't heard from him since so I ended up doing it all on my own~
But yeah, glad you liked it!

LONG POST WARNING
I've listened to the whole project several times now, and every time I like it more and more.
1. SnappleMan - Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles
SAAYY-GUHH! Nice touch.
2. KungFuChicken! - The Wait is Over!
While this isn't quite what I expected it to be like, it's still pretty damn good. It gets a little weird around the 1:11 mark, but recovers at 1:25. I would have liked to seen this one developed a little further.
3. Rexy - Divided from Grace
THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING THE SONIC 3 TITLE SCREEN! I was a bit worried that it wouldn't get included! I really like the varied instrumentation, although the drums sound a little... off (which may have been intentional, I'm not sure). Nice tempo changes too, the faster paced part at 3:52 works well. Nice acoustic guitar sequencing. I like the references to other themes as well.
4. Daniel Baranowsky - Caution: Echidnas May Eat Your Brain
I wasn't expecting anything like this at all! Interesting instrument choices.
5. housethegrate - Walk on Water
I really dig this one. I like how you separated the two acts, but still managed to make it cohesive. Nice work.
6. Daniel Baranowsky - Knuckleduster
What exactly is a knuckleduster anyway? ... Nice fusion of several styles. I was expecting a guitar solo to come in at 2:43 (as per the WIP version I have from a while back) but this new, softer piano ending works very very well.
7. Hadyn - Three Ring Nightfall
This one had me worried from the start. Not the remix, but the source; it seemed to me that it'd be very difficult to re-arrange. I was expecting a straight out cover, but Hadyn did an excellent job turning this one around and making it his own. I really like it, even though I kinda miss the circus-y feel of the original.
8. Hetcenus - That Freezing Feeling
Beautiful. By far the best Ice Cap rendition I've heard to date. As with Rexy's 'Divided From Grace', I like the tempo changes.
9. Gecko Yamori - Elevator Music
Good, but in my opinion it's missing ...something. I dunno what. But something.
10. GaMeBoX - Robotnik Radio
There's a lot of good ideas going in this one, but it doesn't quite do the original track justice in my opinion.
11. GaMeBoX - iMushroom
Again, a lot of good ideas, but it just misses the mark. The intro and first minute or so is great, but after that it starts slipping. The part at 1:41-2:25 seems out of place. However, things do improve after this. Not bad, but it could be better.
12. SnappleMan - Dead Batteries
It's SnappleMan... of course it's awesome! A lot of impressive guitar work on the go in this one.
13. BrainCells - Live at the Sandopolis
I never thought a track with a desert feel would work well as a metal song, but BrainCells has proven otherwise. The orchestral interlude at 1:12-1:26 was a nice touch. I would have liked for the the source tune to be reprised once more at the end though.
14. Rexy, Hetcenus - Beneath the Ashes
Yet another impressive piano track. A great, original arrangement, yet it never strays too far from the original.
15. Kanjika - The Secluded Stronghold
HOLY SHIT. WOW. Did you hear that thunk? It was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor. This track is easily my favorite on the project. It completely blows every other interpretation of this song I've ever heard out of the water.
16. Kanjika - Breathtaking Vision
MY GOD, ANOTHER? Breathtaking indeed!
17. BrainCells, SnappleMan - Scrambled Eggman
Another awesome guitar track from the likes of BrainCells and SnappleMan. Nice breakdown at 1:39.
18. Joker - Before the Storm
I'm not sure what's on the go in this one. I can hear the Death Egg source, but I'd like to hear more of it.
19. SnappleMan - Malicious Fingers
My favorite of the SnappleMan tracks on the project. I like the new drum track that's been added since the version you sent me a while back. It, and everything else in this version, sounds much more polished. I miss the synth that was in the older one at 2:13-onward though, and the current version lacks some of the interchanging guitar/synth sections that I liked so much in the old version. That being said, the new synth solo at 3:54 makes up for it in spades.
20. SnappleMan, Ashane, norg - The Doomsday
Clever intro, I like it. It's about time there was a decent Doomsday remix, and this trio did it excellently... well, almost. Everything goes fine until the 2:07 mark; it seems as if the track was spliced at that point, and the change is a bit jarring. I think it would of worked better if the new section was introduced in under the static at 1:53. I also would have liked to hear the source again in the ending.
21. Red Tailed Fox - So Long and Thanks for All the...
...fish? I'm not sure if I like that 'squeaking'. It kind of detracts from the song in my opinion. I also would have liked to hear more of the synth at 1:13 in other places in the song. Otherwise, a great arrangement.
22. chthonic - Red Sphere, Blue Sphere
Pretty sweet work, chthonic. I like the instrument choices, especially at 2:15-2:32.
23. Rexy - Schumacher's Bar
Again, nice work including other themes into the arrangement. I didn't really like the source that much, but this track is pretty good.
24. Ross Kmet - Momentary Standstill
Although I'm not all that fond of the intro, things pick up at 2:07.
25. Ichitootah - Helium Stairways
I was expecting a more... faster paced take on this one. Nice work nonetheless, it's one of my favorites on the project.
26. Hetcenus - Ivory Gadget
Yet another stunning piano arrangement from Hetcenus. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your work in the future.
27. Joker - Heat Blur
I like this one a bit more than your take on the Death Egg track. I would have liked to hear the 3:05 section earlier in the track, before it started to fade out.
28. jmr - Eternal Excavation
meh. This one should have been a lot better. Oh well.
29. Rayza - Groove Basin [WIP]
Why? Why did your hard drive have to crash? Even in it's unfinished state, this is one of my favorite tracks on the project. ...Are you sure this was the latest version? I can remember a slightly longer version that didn't simply cut out at the end.
30. AkumajoBelmont - Water on the Dancefloor [WIP]
Will this one ever get finished? It's pretty good!
31. Hadyn - Heads Up for Tails
An excellent track, although it seems a little repetitive at times. I like the strings at 2:20.
32. Kanjika - Stranger to Closure [WIP]
Again, wow. I'd like to see this one completed as well. I'm a sucker for good orchestral arrangements.
33. GaMeBoX - Ice Cap 4 Life [WIP]
I liked this one much more than your other tracks on the project, GaMeBoX. It seems different enough from the multitude of other Ice Cap remixes out there, I'd like to see this one brought to completion.
34. Kanjika - Hydrochill [WIP]
Very nice work, yet another track that's worth pursuing.
35. Xenon Odyssey - Lava Passion [WIP]
FINISH THIS ONE. NOW.
The quality of this project is undeniable. There's enough variety here that it can be enjoyed by pretty much everybody. There are few tracks with room for improvement, but even those tracks are still pretty damn awesome.
Nice work on the web design, Hadyn and BLueberry.
I'll comment on the artwork when it's released.
A big thank you to all involved in this project. I feel honored to be included on the same album as you guys.

I'll just reiterate what I said on the guestbook.
Snappleman, every track you touched turned to awesome. On fire. Same went with BrainCells, and I was quite glad to see the two of you do another collab. Top stuff gentlemen.
Hadyn, your tracks still have very much a Linkin Park vibe to them. This is to your credit - Linkin Park make great music (shame about the lyrics) so good stuff all round.
Mr Baranowsky - wtf lyrics? Good track but wtf lyrics? You're lucky you can sing well.
housethegrate, you did great justice to Hydrocity's theme with your track. Thank you.
Kanjika, your first track wasn't anything spectacular, but your WIPs were pretty good and your take on Sky Sanctuary was incredible. Great to hear.
Chthonic, nice and energetic track you've got there.
jmr, I admit, I was expecting the worst when I saw what your source tune was, as Endless Mine was one of my favourites and I was sure it wouldn't be done justice. I was wrong. You did a superb job with Endless Mine, and for that I thank you.
To the remixers not explicitly named: Your tracks were decent, but just didn't jump out at me. Keep in mind I was listening to these at around 7:30am local time, and it was fairly noisy, so therefore this shouldn't be taken as an absolute indication that your tracks aren't as good as the mixers' named.
WIP artists, goddammit, why do you leave us hanging? Why?
Overall, good work ladies and gentlemen.

Oh man, now that I gave this entire thing a listen, I can easily say that this is the best site project yet. I'm really sad that Rayza's tune could never be completed because holy hell it's amazing. But on to the actual project...
Kanjika surprised me the most. When I first saw the project, I saw that he had some of my favorite songs, but I had never heard anything done by him. Both of his songs are freakin epic.
Hetcenus also surprised me. Never heard anything by him. Classy piano stuff. Rexy did great, too.
Hydrocity is my favorite tune on the soundtrack, I nearly shit my pants when I saw that house got it. Good to see my extremely high expectations were not disappointed.
Braincells and Snappleman (as well as norg and Ashane), hawt shit. I rocked hard to all of it.
I also loved the rest of the stuff. I especially liked some of the quirky stuff by GameBox and DannyB. I found myself grooving hard to Robotnik Radio. All in all, there weren't any bad tracks. Great work all around. I really can't pick any favorites because so many of them are just that good.

Of all the songs (which I can hear, the torrent doesn't have fixed tracks) the only one that was "meh" was the death egg mix. I liked the Ice Cap one, but both Ice Cap and Death Egg weren't recognizable to me.
Everything not mentioned in the above was unmitigated awesome.
A special shout out to the lyrics in Knuckleduster for having a particular quality which I require in nearly all lyrics I listen to, which is the quality of having incomprehensible words. I'm very particular about this - if merely the sentences are incomprehensible, it's annoying, but if I can't tell what the words are, it's just another instrument.

You... didn't recognize ice cap?...
That's just... slightly odd...
And yeah, I think in the future, it's probably not really the nicest thing to do - singling out tracks you didn't love. Maybe next time focus on your favorites or something, it's slightly less rude.
Don't worry about it, Hadyn. If he wants to state his opinion via mentioning its strengths as well as its weaknesses, that's fine. At least he's not directly flaming Het's and Joker's capabilities.

I must admit, there are a few songs that I can't recognize and a few songs that take about a minute for me to be able to recognize a theme. Either my musical ear sucks, it's been far too long since I've played the game, or you guys are too damn subtle. :)
However, I want to make it clear that I think every song is K I C K A S S, even the ones I can't recognize. Rockin' guitar work, piano music that makes me want to cry, fresh and wonderful interpretations of old favorites, it's all there.

Ice Cap is recognizable if you listen carefully. It's very subtle, perhaps a bit too much. However it's not bad by any means, and Gamebox's mix is more atune to the original, if that's what you feel you're missing out on.

I'm making a second post because this album is so freaking awesome.
One of the ways to measure if a remix is good is (if you have played the game of course) if you're listening to the music and you find yourself thinking, "Damn, I really want to play this again!" This album does that for me.
It's funny, last spring I randomly downloaded Sonic 3 and S&K and played through it a couple times. While playing I noticed two things, how great the music is - especially considering sega genesis' not so great capabilities (as compared to SNES) - and then also found myself asking how anyone preferred Mario over Sonic.
Then I was like, "Fuck, they need to do a remix project of these two games."
And now we have Project Chaos. You guys are awesome, thank you.

This came out pretty well I think.
My only criticism is that there were a few that I thought were great and intricate musical works...but had little to do with their original counterparts. Those few seemed to either bury the actual theme or alter it enough so as to be mostly unrecognizable. That was kind of disappointing because some of the tracks guilty of this are some of the best from the original score. Even so, those pieces were really well done.
My personal favorite is Hydrocity, but there are quite a few tracks in that list that I find fantastic. I also wanted to mention that I was pleasantly surprised by Kanjika's take on Hidden Palace and Sky Sanctuary; it was both unexpected and very well executed.
Overall, a good job by all involved.
SnappleMan
11-22-2006, 08:47 PM
I also have a problem with a few of the tracks being not as good as the originals, like the ones that are track 1-35... :)
There's no way to compete with the FM synthesis goodness of the Sega Genesis, especially when it's done so amazingly well like in this game. But overall, I doo agree that some of the more inexperianced artists took more of a liberal approach to the songs. Although I think it's more a matter of losign focus of the original songs.
The OST is strongest in its bass and drums, and while the melodies are very good, they're not as defining as the rhythm section. It takes a keen ear and a good understanding of what it is about the song that makes it recognizable that will help you produce a song which is easily recognizable and at the same time not just a straight cover.
I mean, take Rexy's Angel Island rendition or Gecko's Launch Base song, for example, if they had concentrated more on keeping the original basslines intact and used them to hold the song together better, their songs would be recognizable while at the same time allowing for all kinds of arrangement in the melody department.
Don't get me wrong, those and all the other songs are great, but the key is to try and figure out what the composers were going for, and then try to expand on their vision in a way you think they'd have taken it had it not been a 50 second loop for a videogame.

Before the Storm wasn't too bad of a piece. I liked the space station mood in the beginning, but the Death Egg theme really didn't fit into the song, so when the theme came in at 2:08, it sounded sloppy. I love the idea behind the remix, but it didn't fit in with the Death Egg theme

So many great songs in this project. My favourites are:
Walk on water: I was suprised to hear this done in a rock style, but it was excellently done!
Three Ring Nightfall: Took the source to a whole new place, gave it a real action feel, not many would have gone for something so bold. Love it.
Robotnik Radio: full of jazzy groove.
I thought Hecenus' piano performances were amazing, hope to hear more of his stuff in the future. Shame about those WIPS not being finished, especially Hydrochill.

Well, the second half is roughly based on the original theme. Considering the first half of the song is a note for note cover of the original, I wanted to do something slightly different for the second half. That way you get a faithful arrangement of the song, and something different to enjoy once it's over :)

Well, I guess I'll have to listen to it again, knowing that it really is still Doomsday.
Once again, incredible job. My neck hurts from headbanging to BrainCell's tracks and your tracks, and I loves it tbqh.

Kanjika, I owe you an apology - after listening to The Secluded Stronghold in a quiet environment, I can conclude it's every bit as awesome as Breathtaking View.
Which means, everything you submitted for this project was made of awesome, and you join a select group of mixers in my opinion which includes the likes of Jarad Hudson, goat and SnappleMan. I am sincerely looking forward to any mixes you submit in the future.

Larry (and everyone else who replied after him), those posts are from August. They must be merely based on the teaser site. :P
Though yeah, I don't get why they hated OCR so much. If they want the original soundtrack they can just listen to the original soundtrack. What we have here is 35 different interpretations of some classic Sonic music, and there's no way we'll change that to be as really conservative and unpassable as they want them to be, right?

Though yeah, I don't get why they hated OCR so much.
It's quite simple. In their minds, all we're doing is changing perfectly good music. Arranged videogame music is a terribly niche thing, and we really have no right to complain when billions of people will just not "get" it. Our little circle expands every day but there will always be people who don't understand what we do. And this being the internet, well duh, the loud ignoramuses are the ones that type the most [hay wait a sec LoL].
Videogame music is already quite a specific taste, but OCR is getting even more explicit. Tons of people love VG tunes and hold them in high regard, so the opinion that we are essentially ruining their childhood with an improvised solo, new drum beat, "shitty techno," etc. is a popular one that we can... ignore, for the most part. Seriously, who gives a shit? :) It's funny to read, though.
This same topic comes up during every major project release, or a thread on some other forum that ends up being about OCR or VGMix.
I'm aware of the thought of their "childhood" being ass-wiped, for lack of better terminology at this time of day. That's why I said if they want to hear the original soundtrack, they can grab the original soundtrack.
I do bear the thought that they might have wanted covers though. While there's usually nothing wrong with that (read: xoc), I seem to find the appeal a little limiting and sound better with the original sound chip they originated from. On top of that, I wouldn't go as far as calling that method complete poppycock without reasons to back it up, so people doing that to OCR seems to make things feel uncomfortable. But there's possibly no point in arguing as it's other peoples' opinions at the end of the day.
Scott, I much appreciate your "essay" on this (LoL~!!). Though I wonder what other people have to say about that, I'd just finish up with a simple "thankyou very much" ;)

What I don't get is that everyday there are people making fanfics, fanarts, fangames, and everything with the word "fan" attached to it, and most of the time they are praised even if it's only for the amount of work needed to create them, but then, there's an album like Project Chaos, and some people is like: "oh no, something different from the original, it's pointless and/or crap".
Is it really that different? Or does people think ReMixes are pulled out of the ass and require no effort?

It's funny how they seem to complete shun any fan made arrangements that dont sound exactly like the original and yet find stuff like this (http://games.adultfanfiction.net/main.php?list=604.html) perfectly acceptable. :?
I agree. I can admit to be someone who does fanart (though more regular than the usual) and fanfiction (haven't written any since march last year tho). And when I do, I sometimes like to mess around with the original concepts, yet go for something as artistic as done on the project.
From what I've witnessed on various fanart/fanfiction web pages, people seem to mainly praise even the most off-character fanfics (mostly yaoi fics... ouch) and have crushes on certain videogame characters expressed in artwork, yet thinking that videogame music should be left alone is a confusing thing to put through.
I don't want to be the person to say that in front of anyone, but someone should. It should be a point worth taking into consideration.

I agree with Rexy. Why should recomposing music from a game be any different than an artist or writer giving their own unique "spin" on things? Because in essence, it's the same bloody thing.
I mean, this project was done *by Sonic fans*, which means they have a deep appreciation for the game and the music itself, as much as any other Sonic fan would and moreso. Nobody here is arguing that the orginal tunes need to be revamped...we all know nothing can beat the originals. It's just a form of creative expression...same as anything else. Would it sound better to them if it was renamed "FanMusic" instead of "Remix", so as not to overwhelm their egos?
That's in general a really good album. An interesting effort of a job well done.
Special regards to KFC. He deserves a lot credit.

I have been waiting for this project forever. The game's soundtrack ranks near the top of my all time favorites and being just about the biggest Sonic The Hedgehog fan in Cook County only makes it all the sweeter. But to be brutally honest I thought some of the songs didn't stay close enough to the originals. However SnappleMan's were by far the best. Especially the final boss themes. The man is truly a deity.

I don't review as a rule, but as a longtime fan of the blur, I have several thoughts.
One, of course, is that I'm sorry I missed out; I will keep an eye out for any future projects dealing in Sonic music... I'd love to be considered.
I count this as a triple album, because a whole CD's worth of extra songs, especially more than in each of the main volumes, almost defeats the purpose of the phrase "bonus tracks."
The number of tracks done in piano and in electric guitars is not an issue in itself (helluva nice display of chops in both), but from a mastering standpoint (mostly the second disc, and I'm aware of the track order closely following that of the game), similar songs sequenced together in an album could become a bit of a blur.
The guitars, however, are a standout, as well as "Knuckleduster" and GaMeBoX's programming.
Excellent project, everyone.
GaMeBoX
11-27-2006, 05:51 AM
GaMeBoX's programming.
Ouch, that doesnt ring to well in my ears.... (btw, my account is now functional again..) Just to make one thing clear here, the only thing that is programmed in my songs (not including icecap4life though, thats a real oldie) are the drums... The rest is 100% hand played, including the pitchstick on the synth etc. Anyways, glad you like the sound of it :)

The last time I saw spire's cover art, it still had the non-final track names for Kanjika's tracks, and I don't know if hobo's version is still around. In case any of them has made a final version, I think everyone would appreciate if they posted them here.
I guess it's better to wait for that, so we don't waste time uploading an outdated version.

About that cover art,
Not only have I finally returned (yeah I'm terribly sorry to everybody about the wait!! ), but I've also completed the artwork and already sent in the final version (with a completed track list) and thumbnails to Blueberry on Sunday. So it should be available any time now.

I'll be putting the cover art online in the next few hours (I still have a bunch of exams during the next few weeks).
About the "itunes fix", I haven't put those online as the pack linked here was badly reencoded (why the sudden bitrate enhancement? how?), the filenames were changed, and the tracks were actually stretched by 40-50%, at least in my VNC and iTunes (under MacOSX).
I tested the old tracks again, and they worked fine in every player I tried.
Since I haven't got much time, and re-uploading everything is somewhat painful (create an archive + album = 400 MB, to 6 mirrors - not long though), if someone hands me a proper reencode of the tracks, I'll upload them right away (after getting the approval from snappleman or another project director).
EDIT: I just saw I was credited on that wikipedia entry. If you want it right, just put "BLueBeRRy" (and I'm Pierre Capillon, by the way).

Either way, many of these tracks have made their way to my iPod for great listening. After many intense listens I've grown to love much of the material. Prime picks from Disk 1 have included Walk on Water, Knuckleduster and Three Ring Nightfall (holy cow Hadyn, this is a jump up from you in terms of quality O.O), and from Disk 2 I'd say Live at the Sandopolis, Breathtaking Vision and Scrambled Eggman are great to absorb. Disc 3, of course, had bonus material to cover but was worthwhile for Red Sphere, Blue Sphere and Ivory Gadget (this track, of course, being Hetcenus's audition into the Dragon Warrior project if you want to know - great to hear it was finally revealed to the public).

I found most of the album to be near perfect - with the tracks keeping part of the original songs, while arranging them in ways very pleasing to the ear.
The only 2 tracks I wasn't a fan of were the ones for Ice Cap and Lava Reef. I don't mean any offense to the artists that arranged the tracks, but frankly I found them to be boring, and I really did become drowsy in the middle of the Ice Cap arrangement. While I can objectively see they were as well done as the other pieces, I personally can't find myself to like them.
But again, that's just my personal opinion. I want to thank each and every person who worked on the album in getting it released. You've all ensured that the frequent traveling I'll be doing will be accompanied by some excellent music. A batch of karma cookies for each of you!

Hey Omatic.
Why not focus on highlighting the one or two tracks you liked most instead of the two you didnt like so much. Now youre only spreading bad energy. Everybody will not always like everything anyways, we all know that allready. So in the end, this really doesnt say much about your musical taste or anything.

I was hoping I wouldn't come off as too negative, but I guess I did. I really don't mean to spread any negativity, but at the same time I guess I shouldn't only say what I didn't like, so I hope to fix that here. Thanks for checking me, Gamebox.
Anyway, to me the most memorable remixes were the Hydrocity remix, the Marble Garden remix, and the Sandopolis remix , so I'd have to say those were my favorite. They were upbeat and implemented various instruments well. I also can say that the boss music remix was a very cool turn from what I thought it might be.
As a side note, I listened to the album throughout the day on my MP3 player, so I can't recall the track names and the artists associated with each.
While we're on the subject of bad energy... (http://www.vgdj.net/2006/11/on-hiatus.html)

KFC, Snappleman, Rexy, and myself. I might not be a mathematical genius, but isn't that four?
Zircon pm'd me yesterday whilst I was at work; sadly I haven't had a chance to check OCR until tonight, which explains my absence from any interviews. Plus, you know, I live in Australia. But yeah, that sucks about the lack of a podcast =(
Oh, and Rexy; cheers for your comment on my carnival night track. I'm glad you think I've improved =D

Feel free to flame me all to hell if you're being consistently bugged about this, but have the fixed bonus tracks been uploaded yet? I tried using the originals in iTunes and they didn't work, obviously. I tried saving them again in Goldwave, and Goldwave froze on me. I downloaded the fixed files from Sendspace and edited the snapping at the beginning out with Adobe Audition, and resaved them. But they won't import into iTunes, as in, I can't even add them to the library. So have any official fixed files been put up yet?

It's still three - what are the odds of me flying from the UK to hang out with Pixie and Zircon? o_O I would assume by that reason that I didn't receive anything (though they could have at least been able to let me say a message through the answering machine or something).
I think with the way this is going, the project looks like it's about to lose some popularity here. I just hope that's not the case.

Coincidentally or not, I'm involved in both of them... hehe...
And before anyone says, no, I'm not offended, I respect personal opinions.

Well, I'm in Australia, and they asked me to call them... Which is confusing in itself. But you know, I can't imagine why they wouldn't have asked you Rexy if they asked me. You had more to do with the actual project, I was mainly just site design and bonus tracks! Ohwell, it's too late now either way I guess.

No need to bring in a VGDJ-related topic into this thread, frankly, unless you're interested in causing drama. I'm not mad at anyone here, and I doubt Jill is either. If this had happened a month ago we probably would have just shrugged and figured something else out, but like we wrote in the blog/thread post, this was just the latest in a series of factors that combined to make us just want to step away for a bit and take a break.
A couple points of clarification, however; one was that I had no idea Rexy was involved with the project. When KFC/Snapple didn't show I asked Larry who else could be a potential subject for an interview, and he recommended Hadyn and no one else. I took his word for it. Additionally, our interviews ARE internet-only, so location isn't relevant... but to be honest, I didn't know Hadyn was in Australia, so that would account for the delay in response and why he wouldn't want to call a US number. That's my bad.
Getting back on topic, this project kicks major ass. Ever since I heard some wips over 6 months ago, I was looking forward to it. The majority of tracks are at OCR quality and even those that aren't are enjoyable. Props to everyone involved.

Official? No. But they worked for me and are now on my iTunes, so they should work. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/6lf2t3)

Zircon; I'm glad you liked the project at least.
I'm still a bit annoyed that you make me out to be a stuck-up bastard on VJDJ ("one of them didn't even bother to respond to our request for an interview"), especially considering I would have helped if I'd known about your request in time, but I'll get over it.
As for the whole 'no drama' thing, I hate to sound like a little kid but you started it! Well, maybe Snapps and KFC did, I have no idea, but I'm innocent!
Anyway, that's all for now. Adios!

Yeah, it's our bad that we mischaracterized you due to the lack of response. Anyway, I'm aware "we started it" in the sense that we made a post about it, but we did so in our own thread. There's very little point in bringing said post (and subsequent arguments) to ANOTHER thread, which I definitely didn't do. ;)

It also wasn't "on" VGDJ... The only people that would have read that are those who follow our website or our thread, and they don't know who you are. In any case, we didn't realize you had no computer access. Normally, one would assume that three days would be enough time to check one's email.
Rexy, I wouldn't worry about this project's publicity. I mean, true there would have been at least 1,000 more people hearing about it through our show, but this is Sonic...on the internet. I'm sure if you guys go posting links at various Sonic fan sites, you'll draw some attention. ^_~
Haha, point taken :) I call dibs on Sonicstyle!
So far I put up a link in one of my Deviantart journals (http://rexrock69.deviantart.com/journal/10784298/) (not many people read it and the one person who did comment didn't understand what the hell was going on o_O) and went on some Sonic boards and clarifying some things for some listeners wondering whether the teaser site or the actual PHP page is the actual project. Word seems to be steadily coming out at least.

Everything's sorted and cool now, but your math still confuses me... the PM was sent Wednesday at 9:30am, and Rexy posted about your news post the day after at 5:30pm.
Either time goes twice as fast in America than in Australia, or something's not quite right here.
Also, it wasn't my email, it was an OCR pm. I'm not *that* slack - I check emails a few times a day, whereas OCR normally only gets checked in evenings when I have some free time. Sadly on that one evening on Wednesday I was too busy to check.
I probably don't need to be so defensive, but you still sound like you're a bit annoyed and I'm really not sure what I could have done differently. So yeah. Sorry!

However I read earlier in the thread people are having problem with some of the tagging of tracks. Does anybody have a version of Knuckleduster that works on WPA? This is the only track i have yet to hear and I really want to! Many thanks in advance.

Just wanted to add a "me too" to asking for the tracks to be fixed. I had a quick try, and it doesn't seem possible to me given the broken mp3s which are available.. is there any way anyone could get some original tracks? I'd be happy to do it myself, but seeing as no-one knows me around here I wouldn't expect to be given access to the raw tracks.

Great as heck project. This made me go and play Sonic 3 and Knuckles all over again. xD Favorites include Three Ring Nightfall, Dead Batteries, Red Sphere Blue Sphere, The Secluded Stronghold, Breathtaking Vision, Heads up for Tails, Malicious Fingers, and Water on the Dancefloor (especially!).
Also, any idea if/when you'll be putting up:
Nautic Lava 2 by Ross Kmet
(labeled on the flash site as) Unseenbeta 2 (listed as demo on flash site) by Krispy + Joker
Unseen Wonders by Sir Nuts
Sand Caf(?) (WIP) by Darkesword
Run for Your Life, Knuckles (listed as Demo on flash site) by Sir Nuts
(and I'm fine with having 3 or 4 different renditions of Lava Reef on my computer! xD)
These totally awesome tracks are on the Project Chaos flash site. Any idea if you'll be able to put them up for download or not? xD
Yeah, I'm totally speaking for Hadyn when saying this, and could be wrong, but I think they'll be avaliable eventually for download off the site. They just wanted to focus on main project tunes first I believe.

Hey all,
Maybe a little late, but I want to say just how awesome this project is! Not all of it is to my liking, but I do like what has been done to the tracks. Especially Ice Cap. Not something I am used to (given it's fast nature), but awesome nonetheless!
I am seeding on the torrent right now, and siting at 23.524 share ratio, so keep downloadin'!
Also, DarkeSword, do you plan on finishing Sand Cafe? And any other tracks up and coming? How many tracks do you think you will allow to be in this one project? I mean, aside from the three discs worth already out there?
Keep up the good, awesome work everyone! :)

Does anyone else get that sort of feeling?

It would be more accurate to call them Demos. Calling it a WIP implies that it's not finished, but eventually will be. I can't speak for the public opinions, because I don't think on it that much. But I can see how someone might get that impression.
