VOTING TIME

OK, all the entries are uploaded, so now it's time to vote. Here are the voting guidelines.

* ANYONE can vote.
* PM me (zircon) only - do not email - with your top three picks. A first place pick earns the person three points, second place gets two points, and third place gets one. So the order is important. Also include several sentences about why you voted the way you did.
* The two things to keep in mind as voting criteria are arrangement and production. Try to weight these equally.
-> Arrangement: The ReMix should be recognizable as using at least one of the source tunes I listed at the beginning. Generally speaking you don't have to judge as harshly as the panel does for OC ReMixes, but try to keep in mind the site standards. The mix shouldn't be too close or too far from the original, and it should stand alone as a song... in other words not background music.
-> Production: Recording quality of live stuff, how well the samples are used, choice of sounds, muddiness/clarity. In other words, does it SOUND good?
* You cannot vote for yourself.
* Voting ends on January 10th, 11:59pm EST.
* Try not to discuss your votes in this thread OR ANYWHERE ELSE to keep the process as clean as possible.

With that, here are the entries. In double parenthesis are the source tunes that were covered.

YO!

Let's spice things up around here with a friendly little Final Fantasy 7 ReMix competition. It'll go something like this.

Rules

Step 1. Pick any of the following tracks from FF7:
102 - Opening/Bombing Mission
106 - Barret's Theme
120 - Still More Fighting
201 - Main Theme of Final Fantasy 7
311 - Racing Chocobos - Place Your Bets!

Step 2. ReMix it.

Very simple. ;) You can remix any of the tracks however you want. The only other rules are that the mix has to be NEW, eg. written for this competition, and it has to be in MP3 format.

Timeline

We're going to have FOUR WEEKS for this competition. 12/3/06 is the start date so 12/31/06 is the end date (11:59pm on 12/31).

Ok, I'm done...

Submit your entry, either hosted or as an attachment, to aaversa@gmail.com . Subject line should be something like "Entry for FF7 ReMix Competition". Don't forget to make note of what theme you mixed, the remix name, and your remixer name.

Who wins? What do they win?
The winner will be determined by voting from whomever wants to vote. Everyone who votes will simply list the three entries they like the most. The criteria to keep in mind, of course, would be arrangement and production - weight them equally.

1st place will receive an OCR t-shirt or hoodie and a $10 iTunes gift certificate.

2nd place will receive a $20 iTunes gift certificate.

3rd place will receive a $10 iTunes gift certificate.

Also, anyone who submits a finished mix will of course be considered for addition to the Final Fantasy 7 ReMix project, Voices of the Lifestream.

Post here if you have any questions, and good luck!

if you're going to give prizes, at least do a game that isnt already over-remixed.

something like, Star Ocean or Harvest Moon, so we can actually get some material from games that also have good music but are overlooked.

money is a good incentive to get games with little remixes to their name up there.

It's sad that people need material reward to actually get off their butts and do something.

And you're the slowest person on OCR today. He's trying to fill the empty tracks on the FF7 remix project.

Bingo ;)

Trust me. The vast majority of the FF7 project to date consists of tracks that no one on OCR has ever touched. Some of the songs that have been remixed haven't even been touched by official arrange albums. But these 5, for whatever reason, are still open, and instead of nagging people, I figured, hey, why not a competition?

Well, nothing like a little incentive to get a strong start to my career. Is there any downside to trying? Doesn't seem like it so I'm in.

Har, I misread the 1st place prize, thought it said "or $10 iTunes gift certificate." I was sitting here thinking, "I'd rather get 2nd in case I get the cheapie gift card." Makes more sense having read over it.

Why not at least try something, maybe you'll strike gold?

Anwways I prob won't have time for this wicked opportunity, but I really hope something good comes outta this. And hopefully somebody strikes gold and comes out with a bad ass mix. Still can't believe no one has taken the main theme. 8O

Yeah, nobody has officially taken it yet, buuuuut... zircon and I, Trenthian, Starblast, and I think one or two others have actually encorporated it into our mixes anyway. It'll definitely be there, even if no one else decides to make it their 'ting. ^-^

Good because I love the main theme. Hey quick question, What track are you remixing with Zircon and who wrote lyrics if any? Just curious. Oh yeah, any idea when the project will be coming out?

I understand this is a nice little competition, but in the making of your song, is it okay to publically ask others for feedback as it progressively gets along, like putting it in the WIP forums or anything like that?

Either way, I'm game for this, if only to figure out why no one wants to serenade Barret or anything O.o

zircon

Yeah, WIPs can be public, but I'd prefer if you didn't post the final entry publically.

Soo.. Gotta ask before I start. What's the opinion on implementing chipmusic in your remixes? I know people tend to hate pure chip-remixes (even if the original was orchestrated :( ) but if I use it for.. well, stuff?
The truth is, I don't have a comp good enough so for now I'm remixing with real instruments in a cute little portable studio. Although I HAVE some music programs for the gameboy so I thought that this can make my ReMix interesting.

An example of how I was thinking (this is no remix just a musical example) can be found on www.anothersoundscape.tk .
So, is this okay or do you guys really just hate this kinda lame remixing and only select the best made entirely in a proffesional studio with ProTools and the most expensive softwaresynths ever made?
Hope Not!

Dhsu
12-04-2006, 06:33 AM
It's sad that people need material reward to actually get off their butts and do something.
Not to mention it becomes slightly unfair to the people who already did a track for the project for no reward at all. Yeah, they could do another one, but then that'd be two for the price of one. :P

Oh well, hopefully the incentive gets this competition some good turnout so we can finally get this project out the door. Good luck everyone!

zircon
12-04-2006, 06:35 AM
Well, the reward for people that did a track for the project is... being on the project ;) You don't need me to tell you how big it's gonna be.

Ayres; sadly, no, we're not close. There are people who haven't given me updates on their tracks for upwards of 6 months. It's incredibly frustrating. That being said, we have about.. 20 or 21 final WAVs sitting on my hard drive. Shooting for another 15 or so.

I feel slightly out of place in this topic; a newb remixer surrounded by the big names all going for the competition.

I think I'll be working on an entry. Although I have no clue what style I'll be going for. Also, not that it matters, but I'd be entering because I love the game - I have a lot of childhood memories of it. So prizes don't come in to it.

Just to clarify, the track "Opening/Bombing Run" means that you want the opening song in the game (i.e. the music that you hear when you see the first CS with the stars and Aeris' face) and then to go into the bombing run? I know that there are a couple bombing runs, and which one would need to be done (if this all makes sense).

It would be the first bombing run - as in the mission you're thrown into at the start of the game. :)

The first (or maybe second? Is the prelude first?) track on the OST is called Opening/Bombing Run. The Bombing Run music is never played again, and it plays from when Cloud jumps off the train to when he and Barret get into the first Mako reactor.

lifestream is, by far, my favorite song in the game. i might do some sort of compilation thing. the ideas that lifestream has fit really nicely with the main theme, and i think that the main theme would fit nicely on a large set of saxophones. now, can i get the arrangement done fast enough to record before i go home on friday?

lol, me too. I hope you're doing some ridiculous orchestra remix or random awesome solo piano improv thingy.

I'm thinking about participating on this one. For a weird/random futuristic thingy game we need more techno kind of stuff, and I need more excuses to actually make music. I thought the OST was more abstract compared to the other FF games (hence one reason I didn't care much for FF7); I think there's still a lot you can do with certain genres though.

I'm out. I was doing Racing Chocobos, and all was going well at first. The track got to the point where it was done except for minor adjustments and mastering, but then something interesting happened: the source got to the saturation point was so freaking annoying I began hearing it where ever I went. As a result, I find it nearly impossible to continue tweaking my own remix...and I sure aren't submitting what I have now.

This sounds strange, and slightly...complain-y, I suppose, but it's an interesting story and a warning to those who chose to remix this evil, evil, track.

So, anyone who does a remix of that saccarine, uppity track has my eternal respect. You are the brave!

I'm intrigued to see how this works :).

The winner will be determined by voting from whomever wants to vote. Everyone who votes will simply list the three entries they like the most. The criteria to keep in mind, of course, would be arrangement and production - weight them equally.

As you'l be casting multiple votes, it cant be a poll, so I'd guess it'l be like in PRC (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=97931), where you PM the coordinator your vote.

Voting period, no idea. I'd guess 5-7 days....?

I'm really not sure you know which track we're on about here, because racing chocobos has absolutely no themes from the actual chocobo theme at all, they're unrelated musically. One is definately not a spinoff of the other :p.

I may have forced the chocobo theme into my mix for one or two lines, but I really had to wrangle with it to make it work because they're different.

Anorak
12-29-2006, 07:19 PM
I could see how there could be confusion, with -what, four chocobo themes? The Waltz definately has some similarities to Racing though (the way the melodies resolve).

I'm assuming you linked to your chocobo mix, bgc- I can only access the forums from, uh, work.If so, I can't tell if you are supporting me or mocking me.

I might toss my mix in the thread after the entry deadline has passed as a bonus/joke mix, if it's allowed. For curiosity's sake, or whyever people submit bonus mixes. I have to admit though; it is fairly funny to hear the track progress and hear it grow more bizarre and less coherent as I loss patience with the theme... :P

Yeah, but what Time Zone? ;)

hehe.. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is five hours behind GMT/UTC, expressing the deadline as: 2006-12-31 23:59-05:00 GMT/UTC.

The GMT/UTC for the deadline is:
2007-01-01 04:59+00:00 GMT/UTC

My geographical location is one hour ahead of GMT/UTC, the deadline for me is:
2007-01-01 05:59+01:00 GMT/UTC

Fayetteville, Arkansas is six hours behind GMT/UTC, right?

OK, all the entries are uploaded, so now it's time to vote. Here are the voting guidelines.

* ANYONE can vote.
* Try not to discuss your votes with anyone, or in this thread... we want voting to be as clean as possible.

With that, here are the entries. In double parenthesis are the source tunes that were covered.

lol...thanks I guess. I thought it was time for me to step up...even if I'm armed only with my voice. It's apparent that my so-called "ReMix" is somewhat rushed and underdeveloped compared to the awesome enteries I'm listening through right now, but still...I just needed to do this and have a bit of fun in the process...it's my first step to bigger things and improvements, you know.

Anyway, nice job everyone. Still need to listen to the rest of the stuff...including yours, Fishy. But overall, this is kick-ass.

Figured as much - I was really diggin' it and it just stopped!

And I was literally working up until the very last second of the deadline to finish mine. I had only gotten to record the vocals at five p.m. yesterday, had to go to a wedding, and when I got back, the party I was hosting at my house was in full-swing. I just had to go straight back to my room and finishing editing the vocals.

I'll have a final version later - but I gotta wait until I get back into town first.

I just finished listening to everything - awesome stuff - great contest!

Yeah...I think I exposed a little too much.:P

A friend who I lent my voice on a game remix recently encouraged me on "not being afraid to scream in the mic and put in more energy"...I usually sing to myself ambiently (in a more quiet tone) so I wanted to try the opposite with my FF7 entry. Still have a few screws loose here and there...but it's nothing that can't be fixed with a bit more practicing.

What a coincidence, I got Reason around Dec 12, and started mine on the 28th at about 1am for an hour. Then I finished it on the 29th and 30th.

I was seriously just screwing and came up with the soundscape, and then I started rewriting the chords to fit the mood, and then went from there.

Ok well last night I was, for some unknown reason, given a random bit of inspiration to try and make a song purely out of samples from other works. And what better set of songs to try this out with than the FF7 project/compo! Sooo... I stole acouple of samples and made up a 2:00 tune.

Using ACID 4, an old old version with apparently heaps of bugs, I sliced things from (in order of appearance) Sephfire/Tweek, Mustin, Zoola, Alex Smith, Fishy, Avaris, Reuben Key and Swordbreaker. Not the cleanest, cos this is the first time I'v ever done anything like this, but fun to make to make none the less....

Reason is a pretty complete package, and rarely has an issue, that's why they don't update it as much. When they do though, they add lots of stuff(like the jump from 2.5 to 3)

yeah, i recorded them all myself. the tenor sucked, though, so i'd at least like to redo that.

the reverb i used is just the reverb bank that comes with fruity 6 (the bigger graphic one, not the basic one). it's just a slightly modified preset. it's a pity i only had my room to record in, because you can hear how tinny it is because it didn't have any room to expand in. major problem with the production there =(

Well, that's the deadline everyone! Here are the results.

First Place: Mustin

Second Place: Sephfire & Tweek

Third Place: Reuben Kee

Mustin had a strong upper hand on first place, but there was a lot of competition for everyone else. I won't post the numbers - but suffice it to say that with one or two more votes, the 2nd and 3rd places could have very easily been switched (or two new names could have been there entirely!) I'll be contacting some of y'all very soon about joining the FF7 project itself. Not just the winners either. And of course, prizes will be sent out as appropriate - PM me if you won with your email & name. :)

I'd like to thank everyone for participating. Lots of great tunes here and I wish I could have given out 5 prizes and not just 3. I hope some of you develop your tracks and submit them later, too - I think with a little more time a lot of 'em could be improved (after all, one month isn't that long in the grand scheme of things). :D

lol, results reflect my vote, except that I chose Prophet of Mephisto for the 3rd place, but I precised that Reuben Kee + Nicole Adams & Sir Nuts would deserve too this 3rd place. I guess that's the 5 Zircon is talking about.
Anyway, congrats to each one of the remixers for their efforts !
Btw Zircon, have there been more votes than for VOCR, or...?

Great turnout guys. Congrats to Mustin what a damn good song, and it was unfinished too!

Yeah Proph you and your mighty sexaphone were pretty amazing.

There were tons of really strong entries, my condolences to those who tried the chocobo theme I'd prob stay away from it at all costs unless I could do some mad shredding on the guitar with it! That's what I thought Fishy was gonna go for, but a guitarist made a bad ass mix without guitar and doin a insane theme.

I was quite impressed with a good deal of the entries. Reiterating everyone, it was quite a tough choice to pick only three entries, and then order them.

Kudos to all entries!

Awesome!

Thanks for voting us the winner, folks! I gotta thank Lisa, Jennifer, and Tim for performing on the track. Also, thanks to everyone involved in the contest!

I'll be finishing the mix pretty soon and sending it to zircon for the project. It'll be a tighter mix with more cool stuff so watch for that when the projct is released.

Thanks again! You've all made my morning!

lol, and just what are you saying about guitarists?

You know I did actually start a rockin Still more fighting mix, but it turned into a cover. I have it if you want it. Might put it on the WIPs board for funs.

Seriously though, cheers avaris. We guitarists aren't all "MOAR DISTORSHUN!!!", although...
