Welcome to the December edition of OCR's "official" Fan Art Competition (FAC). Where artists fight to the death for your amusement.

Last month had an nice turn out, with a total of 10 entries and a total of 34 votes. Last month's theme was FINAL FANTASY VI. and was won by Electronic Samurai. For final results of last months compo click here (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=94505).

All previous contest entries can be found here (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/OCRFanArt). Thanks to MiamiGuy for setting that up and maintaining it.

If your unfamiliar with FAC then please refer to the next post that contains all rules and regulations.

As you know the winner of last months FAC gets the privilege of choosing this month's theme. Electronic Samurai has selected Ico/Shadow of The Colossus. Here's a link to the wikipedia articles if you are unfamiliar with either game:

- Shadow of The Colossus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_colossus)
- Ico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ico)

If you need more resources you can always use Google (http://www.google.com). ;)

This months deadline is:
EXTENDED TO JANUARY 7TH

Alright! Lets get started!

Support this thread by wearing one of these:

Or you can always make your own banner. It is an art competition after all.

I'd actually like some new banners....

This post is designed to help newbs to the competition get to know how things work. If you feel that you don't understand something completely or you think you can improve this post then send me a nice PM. :)

I have decided to basically explain the competition in a question/ answer sorta way.

What is the Fan Art Competition?
The Fan Art Competition is a monthly event where artists create some form of art based on a certain theme.

What is the theme?
The theme is decided by the winner of the previous months competition and must be video game related.

What if I don't know much about the theme?
Information resources are provided in the first post of the thread.

Who can submit art?
Anyone

What are my restrictions?
You are allowed to submit one entry, but other than that there are no restrictions. There are no size, quality, image size restrictions.

Who decides the winner?
OCR of course, the whole community votes on it.

How does voting work?
On the day after the deadline I will make a post that displays all of the art submitted. Then users will be allowed to see every entry and decide which three they like the best, in order. Afterwhich they will send me a PM with their vote and maybe a few comments about the contest. They must do so in the announced voting period. If not then they fail at voting.

When and how do we see the results?
After the voting period is over I will count the results and figure out which peice has the most points. When voting the voter sends in their top three favorite peices. The one they like the most is worth 3 points, the second 2 points and the third 1 point.

If I enter the contest can I vote?
Yes, and voting for yourself is allowed if you REALLY wanna.

Once the points have been counted I will send a happy PM to the winner that tells them that they one and explains how they are to choose the next months theme. *deep breath* Once I get a PM back I will post the results and artists choice for the next months theme.

Rules and Regulations!
1) Any art submitted must be based off of the months theme.
2) No P0rn.
3) Your entry must be created within the month. It cannot have been something you've created in the past or partially finished prior to the announcement of the theme.
4) All entries must be 100% your work. Simply altering something created by someone else may be cool, but is not allowed as an entry.

I haven't played either game, but I just watched all the movies and stuff at http://www.shadowofthecolossus.com/ (including a hidden "making of" video), and I must say, I'm very impressed. Not just by the game, but by the website design - very creative stuff.

I think I know what I'm gonna do already. From the last contest, it seems OCR isn't a fan of the sketchy style of some of my entries =[ Well, time for something different then =D

And there don't seem to be any rules about spoilers - how, if at all, will we handle this? Is it acceptable to depict the ending of a game such that it gives too much info to someone who hasn't beaten it? Or are these games old enough already? =p

Anyway, this theme definately looks promising :nicework:

Awesome. I have just one more colossus to kill, but I am sure that I have to kill that voice that talks to you in the end....

I expect to see some amazing pieces of work here.

Are all the winners from the past months save?
If so I think it be cool If after FAC12 we got to vote for the best of the year. Or if we did that this month so it could be a December thing. Just an Idea.

Well the thing is I don't have D. Radium's winning entry from FAC2 (skies of arcadia) so...yea...What month was that? Being a fan of SoA, I might have that one saved (there's a pretty decent chance of it). Not knowing the file name though, I can search by file date. Which is why I'd need to know the month... What other entries are missing? Maybe you should start a thread requesting people to submit missing entries. Though, for it to work, you'd have to have a topic that's interesting enough to catch a ton of people's attention. Hopefully someone who checks it would be able to fill some missing slots.

While I might not post in this thread much, I really like the work you guys put into these pieces. Great stuff, really. Sadly I forgot to vote... It looks like it was close enough that my vote *could* have made a tiny difference... I'll try to vote this time around though.

As for spoilers, I'd prefer that they're avoided, as I haven't played the game (I don't own a PS2). That being said, it's a preference. The game is old enough, that chances are it wouldn't be a huge spoiler (I've heard a little about the ending).

Anyway, good luck with the entries. I look forward to this time around (as I usually do). Mouser X out.

Shadow of the Colossus. Awesome pick. I'm looking forward to some good work being posted. If I do post anything, it will be minimalistic in nature, maybe a circle for a head, lines for the body parts and then a giant black rectangle with a question mark to represent one of the colossus...es.. I better stop and not give away any of my priceless ideas!

Not that simple. If I draw fanart, I do so on the basis that I've actually played the game and have some sort of personal connection to the game itself.

If I'm lucky, I might convince a friend to rent it, but don't count on it.

Hi~~ New here, came specifically for the contest (a link got posted on the ICO/SotC forum I go to).

So I was wondering... I started an ICO artwork yesterday and heard about the contest today. Does that count as "something you've created in the past or partially finished" or am I allowed to submit it? (Assuming it gets finished this month...) ^_^;

First off I'm happy to know that news of this compo is getting around (feel free to check out the rest of the stuff since there's some really good stuff, like ICO remixes).

Secondly, all entries must have been started during the month. You can't use anything that you worked on in any way prior to the announcement of the month's theme.

EDIT: Oh you started one day before that post? That's fair game for an entry. I look forward to seeing it.

I had to skip work at least 10 times this month due to random scheduling that takes priority over it (I have the best boss ever)
I'm still not done with everything I have to do (I have to mail out my best friend's present tomorrow/today)
There's always major drama at this time of year (it's so fun isn't it!?)

And I'm pretty sure every single other artist involved has something like that going on too :[

Sad! I really wanted to do ICO!

It sounds like this month should be extended for a bit... Also, it might have been a good idea to do the "Vote for the 'best' FAC entry." Of course, that's a bit late now...

I was looking forward to the entries here. Hopefully some people still get back to it. Mouser X out.

Yeah I really want to see some good works nothing rushed... maybe a sculpture of some sort.

But As this is a busy time I think an extended deadline may be a good idea, but I dont know how that work for next month? would it be short or what?

Wow! Great work, Ninja-san.

I have an idea for future iterations of this competition (assuming it lasts that long).

Since December appears to be such a hectic time for people, why not make it a special month of the competition? Here's what I propose: November's winner chooses the theme for January. There are no new creations for December. Instead, December is used as a time to look back at all of the work for the year.

All of the winners and runner-ups of the year would be posted again. Then voting would start to decide which are the best works of the year. You could even divide it up into categories: best work done by hand (drawing, painting, etc.), best work using a computer, best "non-traditional" work (sculptures, photography, etc.), and best overall.

Since this month's competition looks to have a worse turn out than the Warioware competition, I suggest enacting this change immediately. That would mean extending this month's competition through January, and creating a topic to showcase all of this year's entries.

Does anybody else like this idea?

I expect to see some amazing pieces of work here.

Are all the winners from the past months save?
If so I think it be cool If after FAC12 we got to vote for the best of the year. Or if we did that this month so it could be a December thing. Just an Idea.

I think if anything the date should be extended. We had alot of interest in the beginning (I mean we had people join just for the FAC]and we still have 5 more days. You never know what may happen.

The overall work does sound good too

I don't know if I'll be able to finish in time. I could probably knock it out in a few hours, but this is Christmas after all. I would love the deadline to be extended, because I want to be able to put a lot of effort into this one. SotC is an amazing game and I really want to do it justice.

Glad you crazy cats are happy. I hope to see LOTS OF STUFF since I am extending the deadline.

I was thinking about one possible rule change. Some compos do this and some don't. Would you guys rather all the entries be PMed to me and then displayed once voting begins or keep it the way it is, just with a post in the thread? If it was changed to PM then we could avoid people seeing one entry and immediately say "I AM VOTING FOR THAT." I would have no problem with posts of stuff you're working on and things like that, just not the finished product. It's just an idea, and I would NOT do it unless most people that are entering would prefer it (I would but I do not want this to be my call).

Problem with PM voting is most people are too damn lazy to do it. I think it's probably best if we keep it in-thread for simplicity's sake (and so there isn't a lack of posts in the middle of the month).

It isn't all that difficult. If you're too lazy to do that then get out.

As I said, WIPs could be posted. That would add stuff to the thread people are willing to post them, and some do.

How exactly is it more difficult to send a pm than post in a thread? Plus, if you post in the thread then other people are influenced by your vote, and it wouldn't be as fair.

Also if no one else says anything about PM vs post for entries (I've gotten one supporter for post and a few for PMs) I will change the rule to PM entries. I wouldn't post anonymous entries during voting time, I'd just rather it all be seen at the same time.

Personally, I don't like the PM idea, since it means we don't get to look at them as soon. I like to see them when they're ready, because if they finish early, it gives me more time to view the piece, and "take it in" so to speak. Since I haven't submitted anything (and probably never will, too lazy), my say isn't as strong as other people's might be, but I like it the way it is.

Also, you won't have to worry about bumping it as much, if people post their work in here when it's done, since people will be commenting on it. Just my 2 cents. Mouser X out.

As for how we'll be able to make it work next month, i don't think it would be a problem. It will eventually fall back in place shortly. Next month could be 1 week longer, and with the voting week, we'll be back on "schedule".
