Just wondered who all played FoF. I know that supremespleen plays, and I've seen Dhsu's name associated with a FoF version of Awe of She somewhere.
For those of you who don't know, Frets on Fire is a free spin-off of Guitar Hero (1 and 2) for PS2. You hold your keyboard upside-down with the keys facing out from you, and use the F1 - 5 keys for frets and the Enter key to pick. You can get it here (http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/uv/fretsonfire/), with additional songs here (http://frets.freenerd.org/?songs).
Also, if I understand right, with a copy of GH2, you can get all the songs from the game into FoF. I heard that it can take 8+ hours, though, and wonder if anyone here has tried it.

From chatlog because I'm too lazy to type it again:
(9:15:59 PM) me: download the guitar hero 1 pack
(9:16:07 PM) me: activate the 'chilly' mod
(9:16:15 PM) me: and then get more stuff here:
(9:16:19 PM) me: http://songsonfire.co.nr/
(9:16:31 PM) me: also fretsonfire.net has songs in their forums
edit: some of the GH2 songs are kinda buggy to play, there are issues with the rhythm tracks. some are fine, though.

I'm the one what got Spleen into it. Also, the GH1 and 2 tracks have been ripped and uploaded various places, you can find a torrent somewhere...GH2 have problems with with balance, though. personally, I like www.fretsonfire.net for getting new songs. Gotta sign up.
I use a mini keyboard, with holes cute out of the side. The I put some K'nex pieces in, and I attached my strap to it.

The link is broken for me. I downloaded this a long time ago, when it first came out, but there were no songs on it, so I abandoned it. I recently played GHII at my local Wal-Mart (while waiting for the Wii), and I got interested again. Unfortunately, every time I try to download it, it breaks.

FoF is teh awesomeness. My f-keys are pretty loose nowadays. I've spent dozens of hours playing that game. Too bad GH2 songs can't be played on some keyboards but the fan made songs make it worth it!

The FoF website is back up.

Just download it off of sourceforge - it's only a gazillion times faster.
Also, I'm not playing this game ever again until they allow you to turn off the UNBELIEVABLY LOUD, IRRITATING AS FUCK error noises (I know there's a menu option for it, it doesn't work).

Oooh, exactly. I really hate those errors. Not so much the noise as the total out-of-place-ness when you're playing an acoustic song... and that they never deviate.
And that I get them very often. 'cause I'm doubleplus ungood. (1984, FTW.)

I found nice FTP with pretty much any song for FoF ever, as well as some good mods - including a few for augmenting the miss sounds (yay!). Also has custom labels for most if not all the songs, which is a nice change from the all-blue tapes.
Host: ftp.cry-freedom.com

There are mods that turn off error sounds. Check out fretsonfire.net forums for them.
Also some of my fave songs to play:
Dragonforce - Heart of a Dragon
Witch Hunter Robin - Shell
F-Zero - Mute City
Guns 'n' Roses - Sweet Child o' Mine
Kansas - Carry on Wayward Son

Gonna have to try all those, but I do love playing Kansas.
Also, the solo on I Love Rock and Roll (By Joan Jett) is plain fantastic. My sister swore to buy me a guitar for Christmas after she saw me play it.

I'd imagine this would work better with a Guitar Hero controller and a PSX-USB converter, assuming it can be set up to use it.

I'm sure it's totally possible, the hardest part would be having the game recognize the controller as keystrokes (while customizing the controls).

Yeah, it's compatible for the GH controller.
This game is pretty frickin' fun. The fan-created songs have a lot of tracks that I've said to myself, "This would be great for Guitar Hero!" Best of all, I've got something to keep me busy during Christmas break.

Not so much OCR, but I have seen some Minibosses songs fretted out as well as some of Crush 40's songs and the Advent Children version of One Winged Angel (even though all the orchestration is fretted out, not just the guitar). There's one remixer out there by the name of Sectoid who frets out his own remixes and drops out the guitar parts in true Guitar Hero fashion. Some of OCR's guitar remixers need to post guitarless version of their mixes for this purpose, just like the people who've made Stepmania versions of ReMixes.
Speaking of which, I'm working on fretting out Wizards in Winter by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra using a guitarless mix the band released for a contest. All I need is someone to make me a cassette label, and I'll be ready to post my first version of it here. I only have Supaeasy done now, but I spent a lot of time on it, and I think it's perfect.

Fire Cross would be an excellent candidate for this game. I'll see if I can talk to the mixer.

Oh god, just played Guitar Hero 1+2 yesterday for the first time ever.. MAN! It kicks so much ass that my pants have a hole on the backside.
I had to check this one out too and it kicks engough ass to be a great substitute for the real thing. And if its compatible with the GH controller... YUMMY!
Gotta get more songs for this thing.
I also thought my Dark Side of the Phobos track "Hangarmageddon" would maybe suit this one well. So if anyone is interested in making it, I can provide the guitar track and the song.

Is there any S.S.H. stuff that has been done for this?
Because there should be.

No OCR sightings yet, but I HAVE come across frets for Tackle's 'Ball of Ballos' track from the Cave Story Remix Project. Very, very well done. Probably my favorite Frets on Fire track so far.

Ok, just for you guys, here's a WIP of my very first FOF song.
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Wizards in Winter (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WP9HGY52) (remember, to play the song, extract the zip into FOF's data/songs folder.)
So far, only Supaeasy mode is done (I'm following Guitar Hero rules for difficulty here, so it only uses the first three chords.) Ignore the Medium and Amazing settings, I copied Trogdor when I started this, so those notes haven't been deleted yet. I'd like to have Easy done for the next version.
Please let me know how I've done so far.

EvilHorde, you still haven't given me the track yet. I wants it.
Anyway, thinking about how I would fret the song got me wondering. I would love to see a project dedicated to asking guitar remixers and bands such as housethegrate, Snappleman, Vig, Game Over, and so on to provide guitarless tracks of their remixes for the purpose of creating Frets on Fire songs.
The project could be called "OverClocked Hero" or something like that.

Hey, you got it.
I'm from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania: the home of Groundhog Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog_day). It's a pretty dumb holiday, but I show my support any way I can.

Maybe its a rather strange holiday, but its a great movie! Yay for the 90īs!
But dude; why finnish? Do you have relatives here or something?
Oh right, sorry, back to the topic:

Yes!
On another note, my FoF runs sorta slowly and the songs are all off-sync. Just by a little bit, but enough to be really annoying. Anyone else have the same problem? Any way to fix this?
Eon_Blue
12-24-2006, 03:02 AM
I also have the 'slightly off sync' problem. Seems like it's worse for certain songs. The notes are played from midi files, no? Maybe there's an issue somewhere with the timing?
Otherwise, it's cool.
I hate how my keyboard has F1-F4 on one row, then F5 after a small gap. Makes those last fret reaches a little annoying...

EvilHorde: No, my family comes from Italy, not Finland. Omega, a UnModder from Finland, told me the word. I just adopted it for my handle.
S-DS and Eon: search the Frets on Fire forums (http://www.fretsonfire.net) for RF-mod 1.5. It includes tweeks to the game that take up less CPU and options to not animate the backgrounds flames to save memory. It can also turn off song previews to make the menus run better, as well. It can even allow you to organize your songs by putting them into folders. It's the best FoF mod out there.
Eon (again) and spleen: In the options (I think you need to get RF-mod 1.5 too), you can remap the frets from F1-F5 to 1-5. Some people find it easier, but I don't like it because I have to move my hand further up the keyboard.
