I really thought that by now, I would be ale to collect Pepsi bottle caps or something similar to accumulate Wii points. 50 Wii points on each 20 oz soda? I'd buy a bunch of Pepsi for that. I think there's a huge market out there for someone to do that. Heck, I'd be excited if they did it for Xbox Live stuff too, even if I don't have a 360, just because I'd know similar stuff would happen with other brands and companies.

I have heard that there's Web sites like GamingLagoon that give you Wii points for filling out surveys and signing up for other offers (followed by an immediate cancellation, of course), but it sure seems shady compared to just collecting products I already buy anyway.

How about Wii points awarded in McDonald's Monopoly game? please?

I know there's that whole Mycokerewards thing, and they had Wiis/DS Lites on there for rewards. I wonder if they have points cards?

Mmm, McDonalds. So horrible and vomit-inducing, yet, I crave it. I can almost smell those delicious greasy fries and those gummy cheeseburgers so cheaply put together, and it smells good. I'd buy into it.

Video of the prologue in Mario Galaxy. Man, it's just beautiful. Anyway, enjoy:

They should offer a package like they have in Japan. 5,000 Wii points and a classic controller for $50. (Or Ľ5000 in Japan's case...) Or even a 1,000 point card along with the already $20 classic controller. That would make me finally go out and buy a pair.

Ahaha, and people say Wii's graphic capabilities suck? That game looks awesome. Sure, it's not as good as what we may see on other consoles, but as long as I see improvement from Last Gen (and there certainly is an improvement) I'm happy. I think I might enjoy Galaxy even more than Super Mario 64 :D

It's the best looking Wii game by far (okay Smash looks good and MP3 is no slouch) - It's an actual feast for the eyes, and I wish that Ninty would spend more time on the new Mario Kart so that it would have these graphics.

Anyway, just watching the gameplay and the levels makes me feel like this is going to be a Mario game to remember. It seems to carry that happy, majestic vibe from the 8 and 16 bit games, but you might not know what I'm talking about there.

Hmm... as a pokémon fan, I'm interested in the Pokémon Farm thing... but not too interested. I mean, Mii-style pokes, walking around a farm and not doing anything?

If there were some sort of leveling up or training feature, that might be sort of fun for a while... I don't know, I would have to try it out first, and it would have to be a free demo or something.

Also, Mario Kart with bikes?

I guess vids will be available as well from that service (http://wii.ign.com/articles/826/826152p1.html). I was really expecting them to announce a Wii hard drive or something with the Wii Ware announcements, but I guess if Wii Ware is supposedly coming out in March they have plenty of time.

Also, dl'd the updated Everybody Votes channel, but haven't gotten to see if they've implimented any of the updates they were talking about. Anyway, that was a lot of shit they announced all at once.

So does this mean that the Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for Wii is just going to be a downloadable, world-building game? If so, that's extremely disappointing IMO...really hoping that's just an additional game with the FF:CC branding on it.

EDIT: I love how the screens they have for that FF:CC Wii Ware game look so good (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/142/14209899/img_4961731.html), especially relative to Pokemon Farm (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/142/14209901/imgs_1.html) lol.

No, the WiiWare FFCC game is going to be different than the one they're releasing on disk.

And yes, they fucking need more storage now. And to think.. they still have E For All where they'll have 4 days, uncontested.

I just now noticed that in that stingray pic, the water isn't just some sort of river or something, it's a floating stream of water that curves around and above itself. And there's no ground underneath it. So that means it's floating in space. Which is awesomer than before.

On that note, Nintendo's latest Wii commercial that I've seen seems to try to put a positive spin on it. I saw it several days ago, starts out with a mom and her kid at a checkout, having just bought a Wii, with a voiceover saying "Wii finally got one," followed by several other random "Wii..." scenes with other people playing Wii Sports. Struck me as kinda interesting when I saw it (as well as thinking it's a pretty effective commercial).

Anyway, with Smash out of the picture for Winter, I'll have to satisfy myself with Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, and likely some kind of party game. We have a lot of great stuff coming our way indeed :) Sadly 3rd parties are still having a hard time producing proper games, but that's old news aye.

Certain games are sort of starting to slip under the radar though...Like, whatever happend to Final Fantasy CC (not the Wii Ware one), or Tales of Symphonia 2? Even Kirby and various others I can't remember now just seem to be gone-ish.

I'm hoping to see these and more back soon so i can update my wish list :)

Apart from all the crap we're getting and the long waits, I have to say these are the most exciting times for videogames since the GameCube!

Sadly enough, I fear that the original Crystal Chronicles has either been transformed into the Wii Ware one, or has been forgotten completely.

Which is a shame, because the Gamecube FF:CC was actually pretty damn good, both in content and execution. Honestly, who didn't have a GBA, and know at least one person that owned a Gamecube? I had two GBAs, and everyone I know had at least one each. Between the six of us, four owned Gamecubes.

Any way... As for Tales and Kirby... sometimes games just slip under the radar and mysteriously vanish. It's happened before. Besides, Kirby games haven't really gone anywhere since Super Star. Kirby Squeak Squad was literally more of the same. Only Canvas Curse did anything different, and honestly, they could have not made it a Kirby game and it would still stand on it's own.

Sad times for some of the old Nintendo franchises...

I loved the Cube FF:CC too :)
I'm pretty sure the Wii Ware game is a stand alone game though, but then again, you can never be too sure.

You're right about sad times for old franchises though ;_;. I been thinking about that a lot too.
I think what happens is that Nintendo is trying new things...experimenting, to keep things fresh. And while that in itself is very good, I can't help but feel a lot of franchises are going in the direction where I can't follow them. (Example: Starfox. While I loved Adventures, I was really hoping for a true LylatWars type game and Assault didn't quite deliver that, nor did the DS version.)

(Better example: Donkey Kong. DKC was the best series ever, it only went downhill from DK64 ;_;)

On one hand we don't want same old, same old, but on the other hand, changing the direction of franchises so drastically is a huge risk. And if it doesn't hit right, you have to wait for like 2 years before they try again.

On a side note: I do hear that Disaster: Day of Crisis is still being developed :).

There were four of us. My friends wanted one as well, but none of them had the money at the time or had reserved. So they "escorted" me in line, both to secure a spot near the front and to protect the Wii after we got it.

Although, I suppose I was pretty much just the mule at that point: disposable and expendable.

There isn't much detail other than you pop bubbles with the larger bubbles giving you a higher score. I guess you just pop as many bubbles until the timer runs out? Looks like a very simple game.

Bad idea. Mod-chip + Wii System Update = KA-BOOM!!!

Maybe not "ka-boom" but.... I have some experience modding things, as I can't keep my nose out of perfectly working peices of hardware. But I helped my friend with a mod about a month ago. I don't remember specifically what he used on the Wii, but he just called me and said he now has a brick with a disc slot. So, I think the PS2 generation was pretty much our last iteration of easily modded consoles. Internet able consoles are a blessing and a curse.

So Mario Galaxy got a 38/40 from Famitsu.

In comparison, Mario 64 got 39/40, Sunshine 37/40, New Super Mario Bros. 36/40.

Famitsu only gives one 40/40 per console. There are only 6 perfect scores, which includes any console game ever made.

The six: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Soulcalibur 1 (Dreamcast), Vagrant Story (Playstation), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Gamecube), Nintendogs (DS), Final Fantasy XII (Playstation 2).

There are 19 39/40 scores, most recently being Phantom Hourglass, Okami, Kingdom Hearts 2, and including A Link to the Past, Mario 64, Tekken 3, Virtua Fighter 2, Resident Evil 1, and Metal Gear Solid 3.

This leads me to believe that Wii Fit will get the 40, since it seems to be a huge fascination in japan.

Animal Crossing an MMO?

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=174265

Edge magazine is reporting that Nintendo's Wii iteration of its hugely popular Animal Crossing franchise is taking a massively multiplayer online direction.

While we're still waiting for Nintendo to officially confirm anything about a Wii version of Animal Crossing (apart from the fact that it's coming), Edge's latest issue opens with the news lead: "Animal Crossing goes MMO".

The latest issue of the mag reports, "A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO."

No further details are reported so we're left hanging about exactly when we'll be able to buy cheap turnips off the black market in Russia.

When contacted Nintendo only say it wouldn't comment on rumour and speculation. Bet your biggest fish this is happening...

*If* this is true, is it going to be dumbed down with friend codes and no communication whatsoever with strangers or will Nintendo abandon their childlike bullshit for online games?

Famitsu is notorious for nostalgia and fanboy service, so it's not surprising that a Mario game gets a high score.

Yeah, pretty much; particularly this Mario game. Given the praise this game has been receiving by at least the demos living up to everyone's very high expectations, I doubt "nostalgia and fanboy service" played much of a role in the Famitsu score.

All I know is that game is super-special to me, and it's a Mario game to me. I begged for it when I was a little kid, I got it for Christmas, and it gave me more than I could've ever hoped for from the first Super Mario Bros. Who cares what it was before? Nintendo officially swapped it themselves after some other guys developed it for them. This isn't the same scenario as a couple of guys in my neighbor's basement with hacking software.

It's Super Mario Bros. 2. That game you mentioned is Doki Doki Panic, which is an almost identical but different game. SMB2 is a beautiful work of art, cheap sprite-swaps and extra animation frames included.

Israfel
10-24-2007, 07:42 PM
It's Super Mario Bros. 2.

I'm with you. Unlike The Lost Levels, Doki Doki was a game that Miyamoto was heavily involved in and has had a lasting impact on the Mario series (I haven't seen very many poison mushrooms lately, but Princess Peach is still floating around like in SMB2us). Heck, our SMB2 was even brought back to Japan as a Mario game.

Seems pretty pedantic to say that SMB2 isn't a Mario game.

It's based off the PSP game, but it feels so natural with the wiimote. The graphics are kinda iffy, and it's a bit short, but great for the budget price of $19.99 and the game mechanics are fun.

GH3 Wii is listed as $89.99 rather than the $99.99 price on PS3 and 360, but most likely only because Wii games default to $49.99 while PS3/360 games default to $59.99. The guitar is no less expensive, from a consumer standpoint.

I went to buy the game yesterday, and neither of the stores I went to had even heard of the game. And one of them specializes in hard to find games! Their distributor doesn't even have the game on THEIR list.

Something tells me that Zack & Wiki won't sell that well, but this time it won't be due to lack of people wanting it. It's flown so far under the radar, with no one advertising the damn thing beyond viral word-of-blog, that even distros don't know it's out there.

I'm not sure what "distros" means...distributors? Anyway, I don't think it'll sell all that poorly either, just given that I can't find it anywhere around here. Could have just been poor distribution (or maybe that's at least partially responsible), but it still seems to me that it selling out as it did is indicative of the interest it has generated. At any rate, I'm very excited to get ahold of this game for myself hopefully this weekend.

In other news, presumably soon you will be able to purchase Wii games for people in your friends list (http://wii.ign.com/articles/830/830566p1.html). I think that's rather interesting news...might be kind of a cool way to buy a gift for a friend.

Paying nearly 100 bucks then having to pay for DLC(those awesome 3 packs with 2 shitty songs at full price) = lame.

Rock Band will be out before people get completely through it anyway and will move on very quickly. I see no reason at all to touch GH DLC, no matter what platform it's on.

Just got it, seems pretty cool. The Wiitar is nice and works great with the wiimote. The touch is different than other GH controllers I've used but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The graphics on the other hand, are terrible.

Wait, what? How do you have it already?

Also, who pays attention to graphics in Guitar Hero?Well, it's 2:42 AM here. I got it at midnight. Anyway, the only reason I noticed the graphics being bad was that they seemed worse than the old games. I think Neversoft was just going for a slightly different look, but they all kind of look like Chuck E. Cheese robots, especially the drummer.

Also, the boss battles are kind of lame, and the Wii actually locked up during the battle with Slash D:

Still really fun, not sure if I am happy that it cost me $100 though.

I've yet to try the online stuff, but the first thing the game tells you to do is make an online profile thang. It seems like it keeps track of a bunch of stuff.

It was also pretty funny, at the GameStop I went to the computer crashed. All these people were trying to pay off the rest of their games but it wouldn't take cash. People were getting so pissed and the GameStop guy was on the phone with corporate and tech support. Some other guy spent like 30 minutes swearing that he had more money on his gift card than was showing up.

And then there was a dude in a banana suit.

edit: Stat tracking is pretty cool in GH3. This is just from us doodling around after we got it (http://www.guitarhero.com/slots/12655). Profile's named after my buddy since we were on his Wii. I did check some FAQS afterwards to see what else can be done, and I'm always surprised at how much stuff is hidden in games and how the hell people figure these things out on their own, like those special event things.
Are people just that good. Or do they have some sort of insider help/tools or something?

It's crazy really. Maybe they're game testers then?

Does the game automatically set that up when you create an online profile, or do you have to register for it through the site? When you turn it on it mentions that you should connect to WFC and create a profile. All you do is pick a name for yourself. You can just leave it at that if all you want to do is look at your stats. If you want to join groups and stuff, you register for an account there and link it to your Wii account via friend code.

Sure makes it sound like it's quite possible that the Wii's online system doesn't have to be so shitty.

Here's hoping 3rd parties will do the smart thing with their online play and just have it automatically import your buddy list from the address book. It might teach Nintendo that they're not king of the hill on their own system, in all ways.

This is essentially what MP3 did. The only problem is you don't know if the other person has the game, so you could send friend vouchers to someone who couldn't use them or return the favor.

IIRC, turning the little WiiConnect24 feature on in MP3 was manual, and you couldn't send anyone vouchers unless their name was "lit up" - they had enabled it. But I could be wrong.

EDIT: My sister just told me she wants GH3 for Wii. Is it a legitimate expenditure? I know spleen said he wasn't exactly happy he had nearly spent $100 - should I just wait to throw my money at Nintendo once Galaxy and Brawl come out?

I was able to send a voucher to a friend who doesn't even have the game. It was gone from my stock and he couldn't do anything with it.

Also, the main reason I'm not missing out on GH3 is I'm drooling over the thought of playing The Killers, The Who, Sonic Youth, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Bloc Party, and The Strokes. I haven't been too crazy about many songs on the previous games (although they're still fun games), but this will be a musical fanboy dream for me.

Anyway, Battalion Wars 2 comes out tomorrow. Really enjoyed the original, short as it was, and anticipating this to be more of the same. GH3 is freakin' awesome.

I'm totally in love with about 3/5s of the tracklist. "When You Were Young" is especially fun to play, and both "Reptilia" and "Helicopter" are decent challenges. Plus, "The Seeker" and "Cherub Rock"? I really want to jump around and bang my head until I give myself whiplash when I play them.

Note: playing with a Wiimote as the secondary controller on Co-op actually works fairly well. A friend and I were able to demolish Medium in short manner last night with me playing lead on the Wiitar and him covering rhythm/bass on the Wiimote.

Spleen: I know what you mean about the graphics now, but the only thing about them that really pisses me off that much is the animation. It's bloody awful. The models aren't that bad but the animation is so spastic and in some cases entirely broken it looks like an early N64 title. It's like Activision or Neversoft or RedOctane or whoever's to blame didn't put any effort into the graphics because they figured they could just fall back on the old "oh, it's a Wii, graphics don't matter because it's all about the gameplay/controls" excuse. Yeah, if it weren't for the great tracklist I wouldn't really accept that and be happy when paying the same price as PS2 owners for what is essentially an empty shell of a controller. Don't fail so hard next time plzkthx.

Also, is it just me, or are boss battles insanely more difficult than anything else? Playing on Medium, I haven't been able to beat any of them even once. My last try on Slash I just failed on purpose so I could wuss out and move on. How are those meant to be done successfully?

Unless it's a difficulty-up or double-note (both of which I find to be almost useless), I tend to use them whenever the boss is on an item streak, so he can't get any items to blast me. One of the last times with Slash I noticed that using an item during his very last part tends to run his rock down very fast, but I was too tired and sick of the mode by that time to give it a serious try again. My fingers basically died (we played essentially seven hours with only one two-hour break in between yesterday).

I = ctfreak42. And I use my thumb, but that hand doesn't get tired half as fast as my left hand does with all the solos. I swear, nearly every song in this game has a solo that pops up at about three times the speed of the rest of the song. My finger flexibility is going to be through the roof in some time.

But as far as helping with your strum, be sure to use your index finger as well to strum both down and up on faster sections where the notes are closer together. A lot of people around here seem to do it almost all the time, but I find it much less practical for notes that are father apart because then you have to hold your downward strum until the next note when you can strum up again.

Picked up Battalion Wars II yesterday...as expected, it's pretty much more of the same. I only got to play the prologue mission so far, but I think it gives a pretty good impression of what to expect from it. Controls are significantly slower than I thought they would be when it comes to looking around and whatnot, plus the bounding box is huge so you pretty much have to move the cursor to the edge of the screen before the camera starts to pan. While it would have been more enjoyable I think if the at least either made the bounding box smaller or sped up how fast you could look (or gave you options in these regards), it still feels marginally better than the old controls. Overall, not bad: maybe not something to jump up and purchase right away, but if you liked the original it's pretty much guaranteed you'll like this.

I'm getting the feeling that most of the games "we" were "hyped" for are turning out not-so-fantastic-afterall (more examples: Dragonblade, Dewy's Adventure).

Hey, to be fair.. Dragonblade was done up in like 8 months, by a small company that only really does quickie games. And there hasn't been any even passable dragon-centric games, ever, aside from Spyro and Panzer Dragoon. Everything else that tries to use a dragon as the main point of the game or story, has wound up as utter and uncontrolled shit. Even on the PS3.

And I think we may have been hoping too much from Dewy's Adventure, because it was one of the first second-generation Wii titles, done by the same team that did up Elebits. We were hoping for something along the lines of that game, evolved in some way.

So Battalion Wars 2 is pretty awesome. The only real gripe I have with the game, aside from Nintendo's stubbornness with some online features, is the fact that you can still lock on to your on units. This is so you can lock on to a unit to transfer your control to it, but you can just use the D-pad to select a unit type then hold A to do it which is easier and faster. It can be incredibly frustrating trying to target in a group of 20+ troops.

That aside, the game is an overall improvement from the first. Online is incredibly fun.

Yeah, that aspect of the controls seemed like a pretty big stumbling block. Anyway, like they were saying in the IGN review for the game, the Wii controls added relatively little this time around, which was pretty unfortunate since it had some really good possibilities. I didn't feel any problem with the nunchuk motion controls, though, which was a negative they pointed out in the IGN article.

Beat the Solar Empire campaign the other day, and haven't had time to get back to it as of yet. Really looking forward to trying out the online component, since a lot of reviews said that was the big reason to get the game.

To correct something I said when I previously posted about the game, there apparently is a way to change the size of the bounding box, but since reading that in the IGN review I haven't gone back to try to find it again.

Anyway, to what Ray Falling said earlier, BWii is definitely still a good game, but I think everyone was looking for more out of the controls than was implemented. The style of the first BW is still intact, and enhanced in this rendition (that's a big part of the allure I think). Also for the kind of game it is (real-time action with strategic elements), I think the controls are more than servicable (though, I'll refer to what I said above). All in all, if you've played the first one you'll know more or less what to expect. First one was good and this one is at least marginally improved over that, but it just doesn't blow the older one out of the water like it should have IMO.

It should be very interesting what the game brings. All these planets that Mario goes too, all sorts of adventures--I'm sure that everyone at OCR would like to look forward to it, and hey as u know the Wii is awesome with it's unique accessories. I hope you get it soon. :)

I've picked up Super Mario Galaxy recently, and so far it's been nothing short of utter brilliance. The graphics are the best I've seen on the Wii so far, the level design is pure artistic genius, and the gameplay is classic 3D Mario goodness, with emphasis on 3D; this game is seriously gonna mess with your head. Of course, it does take a bit of getting used to, as I learned as I constantly kept falling into the same black hole over and over again, but once you get the hang of it it's fun fun fun.

Holy crap!! Eight stores? Well I kinda know how you feel. I have a store about 1 or 2 miles from my home......they don't have it. but the one (and only other store I checked) that dose have Galaxy is about 8 miles away. SO worth the 8 miles...but I feel weird driving that far just to play Galaxy.

The US commercial for Galaxy is fucking terrible. I'm glad I imported the Japanese game to show support for their marketing team...or something.

Who am I kidding, the Wii is doomed with these god awful commercials until the end of it's lifespan.

Edit: Also, is anyone up for a few games of Battalion Wars 2 sometime this week? I'm free in the evenings unless I'm playing TF2 (which I probably will be).

They are absolutely fucking awful. Although they create a universal theme for Nintendo's games, it's just worn out and cheesy (Metroid Prime 3's ad sucked too)

Nintendo needs to get back to making good commercials, like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvljN9ycqLg

Maybe Nintendo should show footage of the game with an announcer saying "Whoa, it's Mario in space! You can't beat that! Buy it, if not for yourself, for your Grandma or your shitty stepson. Only on Wii, which is the only system that you can get a woman to play with"

Edit: Nevermind my random outburst, I just agree with you on the fact Nintendo needs to make some slight alterations to its marketing strategy.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is released in the States today, and probably some other places, as well. I'm looking forward to it a whole lot. Anyone else picking it up?

My only decision now is whether I will buy a classic controller or not. It sounds more comfortable than a horizontal Wiimote, but it might not be worth it. Thoughts?

Meh, sideways wiimote with glove on it is comparable in comfort to the classic controller. You really won't notice it after ten minutes.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Galaxy's awesomeness continues. The last few boss battles were fecking EPIC.

That said however, the game's difficulty could've been cranked up a notch, because as epic as those battles were, they were also ridiculously simple.

Still, the game's fun value is undeniable.

I picked it up. I only got to sit down with it for like 20 min so far though. Seems like there were a few small improvements in presentation since Path of Radiance, but for the most part it's the exact same (and I'm happy about it overall). Would really like to get some quality time in on this game, but it looks like I won't be able to get the time in on it like I was hoping (between still needing to beat Zack and Wiki and Battalion Wars 2, and next week picking up Mario Galaxy I'm gonna be pretty well flooded for the time being :-P). Especially with getting a new position at work, my freetime is dwindling, so videogame time has cut down a lot as of late.

As far as getting the classic controller just for FE, I'd say don't bother unless you were going to pick it up for something else too. That said, I still recommend the classic controller for Virtual Console games, it being the best traditional controller in my opinion. From the little FE I got to play, it wasn't noticably uncomfortable to play with the wiimote on its side, but the classic controller is more comfortable still.

I forgot that Fire Emblem can be played with GameCube controllers, so it became an easy decision for me.

I hear that a lot of people (myself included) are having trouble with the data transfer thing between Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. For me, it said my data was corrupted, and it deleted all my info, including beating Black Knight on hard mode

There are several BIG changes that will go unnoticed by anyone not extremely familiar with the Fire Emblem series, such as supports and height differences. Also, the biorhythm is much improved.

I'm on the Endgame of part 1 in easy mode, and suddenly, the last stage is really hard. Of course, it could be really easy if I wanted it to be because there are some godly characters to choose from that are sitting at camp (spoilers avoided).

Normal mode is comparable to hard mode in Japan and it is freaking hard. It took me forever to get passed 1-3. I had no idea that Micaiah's thani was good against knights, so I didn't use it :(.

Anyways awesome game.

Mario Galaxy tommorrow! Yes!

Anyways, Mii out? What is it? I cannot download it because of my current internet...

ALSO... my copy Metroid Prime 3 died. This sucks. I tried to start a game on hyper mode, and during the first intro part, it said my disk could not be read. I checked the disk, and all was fine except one small (but deep) scratch on it. Hmm... I guess that scratch was deep enough to render my game useless. :(

So am I right in thinking one year ago today the Wii launched? Man, it feels like a long year when I think back about it. Got some pretty awesome games these first 365 days with the system, with Zelda being the most memorable launch title for me. It's almost needless to say the system proved itself IMO. Can't wait to see all the great stuff we get in year 2 (let's go Mega Man games for virtual console!).
