I'd just be happy with a fucking 10-gig external hard drive.
I second that. I need more space for my VC games.

Me too (well, in a year from now for sure, because my library is growing). And it would be cool if we could store music, photos, and the like on there, as well as play our own music to games that have crappy music.
Why Nintendo is so reluctant on this I have no idea.

I want to know what the deal with this wii thing is.. Why are there still none in stores? I mean comon its been 366 days now. And the demand is still high... I need one before Feb 10....
Any one want to sell me one...

Have you ever played one? At Gamestop or a friend's house? It's great... there just aren't enough good games yet. Well outside of Nintendo, anyway...
If you really want one, get familiar with the stores in your area, and call them, ask them when shipments come in, and BE THERE WHEN THE STORE OPENS.
I just sorta fell onto my Wii; I had joked with the clerks about being pissed at Nintendo for not having any, and just said 'so you guys don't have any, right', but they did.
That was the coolest moment in videogaming history for me. :D Ok not really, but still it was sweet...
If you want one, you have to get out there, or hope somebody can get one for you.

If you're real adamant and able, I bet you'd be guaranteed to pick one up on black friday if you camp out overnight at the right store. Worked for me last year.

I had to work really damn hard to get one. I went looking (specifically for a Wii) over ten times, and came back empty handed - Then someone here on OCR, who I can't remember, told me that big shipments were going to Best Buy stores on a certain day. I went, and I was next to the last in line. The last guy was a coworker. I picked up that Wii and walked back to my car with great pride and the chummiest grin you would ever see.
I was pissed off during launch, because all of these random people, who could give two shits less about Nintendo, were there because of the hype. The same people who get hyped over the PS3, the IPhone, or whatever else. I hate those people. I couldn't get the Wii because the trend whores out there were getting them first.
Anyway, when I got one, it felt damn good. Best $250 I've ever spent.
Edit: Wow, I curse a lot.

Oh and I went to a few stores today and there was a small crowd before the store opened, none of them wanted a Wii, they were all there for rock band...

Didn't keep up with much of the thread, but I gotta say on the topic of Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, I heard it's actually a pretty solid game with very few actual weak points and a few really ingenious games. IGN, for example, seems to think that if they expanded on the, what were they again? Dream games or something? That they'd really be onto something special for a sequel, but it's solid and fun as it is.
I'm still being mesmerized by Galaxy myself, though. :)
Picking up Trauma Center: New Blood soon.
BardicKnowledge
11-26-2007, 08:34 PM
Olympics is hit-or-miss depending on the event. Archery and skeet shooting are good, for instance. Running (and therefore hurdles) gets boring after you do it the 100th time. Swimming and high jump are my favorites right now.
Also, has anyone picked up the Wii Zapper yet? It's fun, but unless a solid FPS comes out very soon, it's going to sit and collect dust -- Link's Crossbow Training isn't all that great after an hour.

This is a longshot, but for the other CompSci nuts at OCR:
Is there a utility to extract the unencrypted bits from a Wii save .bin file (saved to an SD card)?
I'm looking for a way to rip the save icons from the save files, but I can't write a tool myself because I can't figure out what image format it uses. If it were a simple pixmap, I've already written a tool that reads those...
The reason I want the save icons is for the friend code database. I need a good way to represent Wii games. I can already rip the DS icons.

So, last night, I downloaded Blue's Journey for virtual console. I don't know why. Maybe it was the screen shots that remind me of fantasy zone. People, this is one messed up game, and for some odd reason, I don't feel cheated.
There's tons of great Engrish and crazy Japanese weirdness. Everything looks like an acid trip (like Fantasy Zone or Wonder Boy), and the shop keeper is in a stripper outfit (and has huge breasts). There's also a lot of weird "Japanese" voice acting and possibly the most retarded ending I have ever seen. It didn't take long to beat, but I appreciate the game for it's weirdness and uniqueness.
The game play is pretty fun, with a ton of different power-ups, and weapons that increment in power. You can also grow and shrink at any time to go from power to speed. You can play with a friend (yes, has coop) when they come over, and they will go "What the hell is this weirdness?"
Oops, I just wrote a review. Has anyone else tried this game?

Good luck with getting SE bringing their games to VC. Why charge people $5 to $15 a game (come on, you know that they would charge as much as possible) when you can port or remake it for DS (or even the PSP) and price it at $50 a game?
But on the other hand, looking back at all the remakes and ports that have come out and been bought over and over again by the same people, maybe they think they can actually get away with both a VC release and a new port/remake/pseudo-sequel.
Hector
11-28-2007, 06:04 PM
Perhaps with the Squaresoft side they have shown a penchant for remaking games, but I've yet to see that with the Enix side. Enix made some great action RPGs during the SNES era, and I've not seen a whisper of a remake or a VC release of any of them.

It's probably as under-the-radar as games can get. I didn't even know there was a Wii version.
Regardless, I got my fill on the DS, and while I applaud the concept, in the end it's just Bejeweled with an incredibly broken, cheap AI.

I'm open to anything really, but my least favorite is probably strategy.
Looking at the list, here's 15 of the best ones in my view...
-=SNES=-
Super Castlevania IV- A great entry into the series. Nice graphics, good music, but a bit on the easy side. The controllable whip makes for some interesting gameplay additions, and there are plenty of levels to make your way through.
R-Type III: The Third Lightning- Great shmup. Pretty damn hard too. Great graphics, good music, and a choice of three different Force orbs to make for some experimentation.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts- Hard as a fucking rock, it'll make you want to punch a baby. However, it's not hard because it's cheap, it's hard by way of enemy placements and level layout. It's graphically very good, has a very nice soundtrack, and to see the ending, you'll need to play through twice.
Super Metroid- Do I really need to explain anything with this one?
Axelay- Another shmup from Konami. As expected it looks quite good, has good music, and it switches from "into the screen" view, to side view every other stage. Gotta crank this one's difficulty all the way to see everything in the ending.
-=Genesis=-
Ristar- A platformer that really got little attention, despite the rather high praise. The character is sickeningly cute, but the gameplay is spot on. Great graphics, upbeat music, fun gameplay thanks to the character's stretchy arms, and big, fun levels. The boss fights are blast too, and the game as a whole has just the right amount of challenge. Great stuff.
Gunstar Heroes- Contra-like gameplay, but much more hectic. Very good graphics, good music, a tough challenge, and lots of levels. It's by Treasure, so it's got all the expected cool special effects too. Run 'N Gun baby.
Alien Soldier- Take the above game's gameplay, difficulty and visual style, shorten the levels, and make twenty-plus bosses for you to fight. This game is a boss fight lovers dream, as the bosses make up the majority of it. It never came to The States, and it's a shame since this game is quality stuff (again) from Treasure.
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole- Action RPG that's set up in an isometric view. It's done by Climax, and it has a similar graphical style to games like Shining Force and especially Shining In the Darkness. Making the jumps is a bit difficult because of the view, but the game is great from start to finish.
Shining In the Darkness- A dungeon crawler on the Genesis? Why not. The music gets a bit repetitive after a while, but it's a quality title. The dungeons get tougher as you go along, and keep some paper handy as you'll want to make a map of your journey. Good graphics, nice tunes, and a solid challenge that keeps from feeling unfair.
Beyond Oasis- Another action RPG, done by Ancient (Yuzo Koshiro's company). Great graphics and a tough, but fun quest wait for you here. The music's a bit average, but mostly because the tunes aren't all that memorable, as opposed to being bad aural quality.
Shinobi III- The last entry on the Genesis, and it's a good one. Very nice graphics, good music, a nice variety of levels, and it's a good challenge. It plays similarly to Revenge of Shinobi, but its gameplay has been expanded with a few new moves, and ridable vehicles. A very good action platformer.
-=NES=-
Castlevania- An NES classic. Sure, the graphics are rough, but the music is memorable, and the gameplay is good.
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest- Better graphics and equally good tunes, this game's several times larger thanks to the broader quest. Another NES classic.
Ninja Gaiden 1+2- I'm putting these together because they play damn near the same. Both games are hard as hell, but they're also quality titles thanks to the graphics, music and level design.

Played some more games. Here's what I like, in the order that I like it.
Mercury Meltdown Revolution is a fantastic budget game. Plays like Super Monkey Ball, but with a lot of twists and differences. I highly recommend it. $20 in stores. Though most the music is merely okay, some is even remix worthy. Particularly Bio Lab stage 16. Wonderful song, I may rip it so you can have a listen.
Also, Geometry Wars Galaxies is made of win. You can even send DS demos from the Wii. It's a fully fleshed out game with 64 stages instead of one .. and other mechanics like Geoms (money for unlockables, also for a new multiplier system) and drones (a little invulnerable box that helps you out). It plays great on the Wii, and if you don't like IR aiming you can dual-analog it with the classic controller. There's 2P Co-op and Vs, and it also includes the original XBLA version. The difficulty is varied, some stages are nice and hard ^_^ I have no complaints about this game.
Soul Calibur Legends is mediocre. It's a hack-and-slash adventure, no more, no less. It doesn't have the depth, or even as good a story as the SC fighting games. There are 7 playable characters, including the surprise character ( Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia) who happens to be my favorite. Everything about the game reeks of poor design, but it's decent for a hack-and-slash beat-em-up style 3D game. The graphics look great for a Wii game.
Cruis'n is outright terrible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. It brings shame to what was once a good arcade game series.

Castlevania- An NES classic. Sure, the graphics are rough, but the music is memorable, and the gameplay is good.
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest- Better graphics and equally good tunes, this game's several times larger thanks to the broader quest. Another NES classic.
Or do the smart thing and buy a PSP and get THE two best Castlevania games on a single disc or any download service that offers SoTN. Old Castlevania games are way too unforgiving to be 'fun' IMO. I don't think most casual gamers are up for it.
Ninja Gaiden 1+2- I'm putting these together because they play damn near the same. Both games are hard as hell, but they're also quality titles thanks to the graphics, music and level design.
But foremost, the legendary difficulty level.
As for Soul Calibur Legends, I really wish developers will stop diverting good old fighting games into messes of 3rd part hack and slash adventures. Like that new Guilty Gears adventure game that looks like it'll be the worst game ever.

I think the furthest I've made it the 2nd time around was fighting the boss with the mouth for a belly. Somewhere around there. It's been so long since I've played it. I think what made it hard for me is that I thought you had to have the bracelet the whole 2nd time through for some reason, so I never worried about getting any other good weapon.

Totally agreed. It's a great game for the price. Also, like you say, some of the music is remix worthy. Check out Geo - Stage 15. It's a simple little rock tune, but I might consider creating a vocal remix of some kind. I'm already playing around with it on guitar.

I've got both versions, and the Wii is far superior. The only thing the DS has going for it is that I can play during work in the lab, etc. Still, both are excellent. I'd highly advise playing without the stylus on the DS -- it will seem like you will lose a degree of analog control, but the slower speed on the system makes up for that (and it feels even more like Smash TV, which isn't a bad thing).

The Wii system update does not automatically update the photo channel. You still have to nab the photo channel update from the shop channel to break your MP3 compatibility.

From what I've heard Link's Crossbow Training is pretty fun for as long as it lasts, which is only a few hours. Also, some say the game is actually a lot easier and far less frustrating without the zapper peripheral, but I have yet to try it out myself so that's not my own opinion. But yeah, only twenty bucks, right? For me personally I'd rather just wait until a friend picks it up to give it a whirl.

No, all accounts are that you spend Wii Points on a VC title, and then send it to someone on your Friend Code list. There's no "regifting" of titles.

Well I haven't seen the display screen, but thats why I'm assuming you can't send the ones you already own. I'm thinking it never gets loaded on your console at all? Yes? This is all I was trying to say. My apologies for being misleading.

I just bought a 2nd Wii remote controller and synced it with my Wii and started testing it out on the Wii's main interface but if I go to Wii settings and try to pick an option it won't let me. Is it because you can only do so with the player 1 (P1) remote or is there something screwed up with my (P2) remote?

it gets one major thing right
when youre playing the game, no matter what, youre online and if someone wants to play a little bell comes into the corner alerting you
ok now what it does wrong
EVERYTHING ELSE
only race is online its only 2 players there are only 3 maps and if youre behind (which i was the entire time) they dont give you any kind of way of catching up

I just wanted to update this "Wii raincheck program" that megadave brought up with information from my boss at GameStop. All of this refers to just our GameStop in Ohio from what I know, so many other stores may be doing things differently.
We are allotted 24 "rainchecks," that's it. Instead of being Thursday and Friday, we are only accepting orders on Friday the 21st, and we will probably hit 24 orders by 10 a.m., an hour after we open. All indications are that this will be some sort of disaster one way or another, mostly because of poor communication or lack of information. For instance, this article doesn't mention that there is a limit to the number of rainchecks, so many people will be out of luck, and they will be very mad at GameStop.
Also, if every GameStop gets 24 Wiis each, he said that the total is only about 10,000 Wiis, which is clearly not enough to appease the masses.
Needless to say, my manager is pretty upset at GameStop corporate over this whole thing. Yes, I know that most of their business practices are usually questionable to say the least, but this one seems to be more Nintendo's fault.

Was wondering about this game, actually, ever since supremespleen tipped me off to it. Nice to hear that it's solid. Also, respect to EA for not being Nintendo. Er, at least in the area of online. I keep looking for a fun shooter on Wii, but CoD3 was not very good, Red Steel was an atrocity and MP3 is in a totally different category, really. So, should I be looking out for MoHH2? Anyone remember Mission in Snowdriftland? It was a flash platformer that had a level for every day of December. After each stage you beat, you got downloads for different Nintendo games.
Anyway, they aren't providing another flash based game this year, but I got this from their newsletter.
"News from extra toxic!
A lot of faithful fans have been waiting a whole year for the return of Chubby
and his friends. But, unfortunately, Mission in Snowdriftland won’t be online
this year due to organizational reasons.
But there’s good news as well: extra toxic has been officially licensed for
Nintendo Wii(TM) games development recently. We don’t want to reveal anything
else at this point, but we’ll let you know as soon as there’s something new.
The extra toxic team wishes you a wonderful Christmas time and a happy new year."
If they can make a platformer that was as fun as MISDL, that'd be sweet.

So, being the holiday season that it is, I decided to take the Wii to the family get-together in a few days. But where is my Wi Sports disc? They all seemed to like it last year, so I thought, why not bring it again?
I found it. It was in its little cardboard sleve thing from when I bought the system on launch day. Hadn't used it much since then, of course. Zelda and all those other games.
It has a giant scratch across the side. I put it in, and the damn games doesn't load at all. I vaguely recall noticing it before but since it was a long time since I used it (pretty much last christmas), I hadn't thought about it.
After a few hours of trying to get it to load, it just wouldn't take. So I called Nintendo and asked what my options were. Even though it's well past the warranty expiration date, Nintendo is sending me a new free disc to replace the dead one.
They said it should be here in time for christmas; if not that, then New Years.
+1 for Nintendo's customer service.

He'd be good in Brawl. A lot of his attacks would be similar to Ness' attacks, what with the yoyo and bat. He could have a final smash submarine attack, or maybe use those alien buddies of his for some full-screen attack.

I just feel that SSBB will give us some ideas as to what may be coming our way. Pit being included gives me high hopes for a Kid Icarus Wii game. In fact the Wiimote really would work well in a bow and arrow setting. Heck, the yoyo setting would work out well too.

Though you may have already purchased Sin and Punishment, and while it's a decent title, I would just like to state that the control scheme for the GameCube controller with make your hands look like they're engaged in a game of Twister. I don't have a Classic Controller because I opted for the regular GameCube controller so I could also play GameCube titles, so I can't speak for the control scheme with that controller.
If you haven't purchased it, though, and you only have a GC controller, I'd steer clear of it.

Keep in mind though that Sin & Punishment has selectable control schemes as well, so even if you only have a GCN controller, if you fiddle with the options, you'll find something to your liking.
But Classic Controller is a solid investment for VC games.

While I agree completely, it's also a bit of a pain in the ass for Pokemon Snap, just for the record.
The controls are fine and all that, but the joystick is way the hell more sensitive than the N64 controller's was. I find myself overshooting my target frequently.
Buuut of course that's a small price to pay.
Definitely, pick up a Classic Controller if you plan on downloading more than one or two VC games.

Japan still releases on the 31st of January...It's pretty damn tempting. Are you still planning on getting JPN version, Atma?

I'm not too worked up about it. I've been playing Twilight Princess, and I still want to play No More Heroes and Endless Ocean (c'mon, Brawl isn't the only cool game coming out). But I hear ya, it's been pushed back way too many times. They should have waited until the game's completion to announce any release date.
By the way, VC kinda sucked this week didn't it. Only 2 games and none of them particularly notable.

what is the name of po's poem?
are you a game master?
(if you know what im talking about, that shit has plagued me forever, please shed some light on it)
It's a trick question. Po's poem has no title -- Po, the poet, can be found next to the Hermit's Mountain in Chapter 3. His poem gives a hint as to how to finish the chapter.
I _am_ a game master, at least as far as Startropics is concerned. :p
EDIT: Also, I'm unhappy with the delay of Brawl -- I was really looking forward to it. I wonder how much (if at all) this will hurt sales...
