I'm very happy, they're making a sequel to Trauma Center: Second Opinion (http://wii.ign.com/articles/802/802728p1.html)! Apparently they've made some good improvements, though even if it were more of the same I'd be happy.
Y'know.. that sounds pretty damn slick. Trauma Center was one of the few games that I really enjoyed, if felt it was a bit lacking to warrant a full-price purchase. But having 2 player and an online ranking system? Nice.

To those who say that Wii will never have HD, Think about this:
In a remarkable example of pushing a system to its limits, Gran Turismo 4 was able to output 1080i from a PS2. A PS2! Wii is much more powerful than PS2. Never rule anything out.
Is HD likely to become prevalent? No. Is it possible? Yep, but after much effort and without a doubt a firmware update.
Likely? No, not now. Maybe later in its life.

PS2's video output also wasn't designed to be limited. Wii was, specifically, designed not to output over 480p. Otherwise we'd at least have a VGA cable out now, from a 3rd party.

That is silly. Not wanting to add the cost of Hi-def cards to your system's price is one thing (though personally I think it would have been worth it), but to specifically prevent HD from ever happening? WTF?

Art style? What's art style? You mean real live people actually chose how a game should look? It's not all just based on processor power?

I was kinda hoping Pikmin Wii would be announced (or the unveiling of a new franchise), but otherwise quite pleased.
The Wii Zapper looks pretty cool, I'm looking forward to using it (they said it'd be bundled with some software, but didn't specify if it was gonna be with Ghost Squad, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, or what right?).
Also, good to know about the release dates...really looking forward to getting my hands on Metroid Prime 3 in less than 2 months.
Wii Fit is kinda meh for me personally since my life is already active (like doing the Seattle to Portland bike ride on Saturday which I'll probably do in one day, so finding yet another venue for working out isn't on my priority list), but I'm sure at the very least my mom and Wii-owning female friends will be all for it (it's harder to imagine my Wii-owning male friends being excited for it).
I'm obviously psyched for Mario Kart Wii, I just really hope there won't be the problem of DC'ers like there were for Mario Kart DS's online play. I don't fully see the point of the wheel; I didn't get much of a look at the pics, but it just seems like its a shell to put the wiimote into without any added functionality (like buttons or whatnot). I mean, one will be bundled with the game, right, so that's fine and all but what would really compell me to buy more wheels for my wiimotes? I suppose it's like the Wii Zapper, it doesn't add functionality but just gives you a little added immersion in the game by how you hold the controls. Maybe it'll make more sense to me after using it.
The Check Mii Out channel I'm not so sure about, but maybe could prove to be a nice little diversion.

To be honest, I am really not impressed by anything I saw so far. Not only because nothing really came as a surprise, but also because the new things are aimed at people who are not me.
It's great that Nintendo is selling so well and that these things will probably help them sell more, but they're going down a road where I can't follow them. *drama detector explodes*
So now I have to make a choice. I either keep waiting for those rare AAA titles (which for the past 12 years have only been (to me) Nintendo-only titles and their sequels), I buy myself another system which may or may not actually have games that I actually do enjoy, or I face the fact that I am part of a very, very small demographic and might as well give up on new generation gaming all together.
*sigh* Of course gaming isn't the only thing in life, but it is one of those few nice hobbies that have been entertaining me for so long...

Of course this isn't the end either :) so for now I'll stick with the original plan: wait for those damn rare AAA titles (I'd actually settle for a nice B right now as well T__T).

I'd really like to see some solid, non-minigames coming out for Wii. It was cute at first, showing off how the remote can be used to do -parts- of games. But now, seriously, I'm waiting for some good, quality stuff.
Looks like MS did a lot better last night, revealing a block of 20 big games coming out by the end of the year, plus announcing partnership with Disney to have almost all their movies up on the Live Marketplace, for download in high definition.
Guess it's time to see what else Sony tries to steal from Nintendo, in their half-assed, overpriced way.
Oh.. and since I wasn't able to watch the Nintendo conference myself.. I'm hearing that there was no online mentioned for Smash Bros Brawl. Does this mean they scrapped the online? They mentioned Mario Kart Wii as being online, even Dragon Quest Swords. But nothing about Smash Bros?

I don't have a wii, but I will get one and I do agree with what he has said. Nintendo is slowly but surely straying off the path of the videogames that we know(and some of us still love). I do like some of the stuff they've been doing that are not necessarily traditional videogame experiences, but I still have to find one that entertains me as much as some awesome, "classic style" videogames do. I still love some of the nintendo franchises like smash, super mario and metroid and wait eagerly for its releases, but for a guy like me, its hard to get a system just to play a few AAA games.
Still, business-wise nintendo is on track to become a profit phenomena and market leader. Adn well, it still has smash, so until they turn that into a mini-game fest i will still be buying their consoles.

Well, granted, this is one of their patented phases that they've been sporting by releasing as many mini-games that so many kids pick up, decimate and boast about in such short periods of time. Meanwhile, the rest of the gaming populous is desperately waiting for that big game release that will "...possibly occupy" us for extended periods of time.
My thing is, I didn't really account for Nintendo to start the Wii on the mini-game kick. I mean, there was Wind Waker and a few others, but then it slipped into the release of mini-games - - hardcore. Now I'm reading up on Mario Kart and Smash Brothers and this seems like what some of us were actually waiting for.
I'm not inclined to disagree with you on Nintendo not being on track into profitable ascension, but they have this unique habit of slipping into their mini-game habits.

I have a Wii, got it as soon as it was my turn to pick up my pre-ordered unit.
-Wii Sports was great fun, just don't find myself returning to it much.
-Zelda was awckward after having played the Cube version first.
-Wii Play is still great to play occasionally.
-DBZ T2 was pretty good but didn't feel rewarding as a game and I was annoyed by the fact that some of the same flaws from DBZ B2 (for Cube) were still in there.
-Red Steel was surprisingly good, but also had no lasting appeal.
-Prince of Persia for some reason managed to catch my interest but I deeply regret buying it. Then again, that was the only choice I had when I returned the godawful Heatseeker.
I never finished PoP in the end, because it just didn't feel rewarding enough to play.
Some of these games were a pretty big gamble in the first place. I actually wanted to be open to 3rd party stuff but they let me down.
The games I am lookign forward to are the games I already played on earlier generations.
While I still want the likes of Metroid, Mario, Smash Bros., Final Fantasy, Kirby etc. etc. I didn't need a rushed next gen to give me what I want.
The industry fails because of the competition and the technological progress that makes sure anything we buy is outdated the next day.
They'll do what every marketeer has been doing since the industrial revolution: sell minorly updated products you don't really need, on mass market scale, because there will always be many fools to buy your product.
This works with the toothbrush, electronic razorblades and mobile phones the same way it does with games like Mario Party 8, Pokemon Wii and just about every EA sports title.
There are good games coming out for Wii, but we don't need a Wii to play them. The only reason last gen is "dead" is because they all rushed into the next gen because of competition.
And THAT is marketing, and THAT is life.
And that's why I'm mildly annoyed :) Which you can probably tell from this waaay too long reply to your short post.

I understand what you are saying, but the software/reasons why we bought a Wii in the first place still aren't released. They are still underway.
Same happend to the DS. There were some midly fun games with gimmicky factors, and a long time of drought after that. Now that the DS is older, it's library has been filled with same great A+ games, that are not playable on any other platform.
So i guess, give it some time, and the Wii will have a wide arrange of games that are only playable on the Wii.

This of course is very true.
As for the DS, I waited a long time to get that but even that didn't really give me what I wanted.
Not because the games were bad per se, but rather because they were relatively short, while I like playing games that take ya at least up to 40 hours to finish, or have such great replay value that it doesn't matter how short it is.
The 40 hours minimal actually became my standard at one point, so I get at least something worth my 60 Euros.
I wanted plenty of games that came out for GBA/DS, but in my opinion they are not worth all that money.
So that again brings me to the problem of things being marketed to other groups rather than the one I fit in.
It's is only my problem (and that of said group) though, but yeah from my point of view, it just sucks because of the history I have with games.
Like I said before: I'm happy nintendo is selling so much, but I wish there was more for me to get too, besides the usual minor upgrades of games.
It's getting like that nowadays. One of my co-workers recently bought a PSP only to buy Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. She has no intention of buying anything else... Solely because nothing interests her. Outside of that, she's always playing her emulators. And yes, that was very much relevant.
Yeah I'd be like that too. There are certain games coming out on certain systems that I'd want to have so badly, I'd even buy a system just for that game, but then I'd secretly hope there would be more games to come out later that I'd actually want as well, so the money isn't exactly wasted, but then that doesn't really happen a lot.
(for example, there's a game coming to Xbox360 that was made by the people who did Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos (Namco mostly) and I got mad that it would not be on Cube/Wii after having played the greatness that is the other two (three) mentioned games.
It would be no good paying over 300 bucks just to play one game and then have a machine standing there which all those possibilities but me never using them.
--- --- ---
As for Mario Galaxy: the idea of transforming into a bee and a Boo strikes me as very interesting. There will probably even more transformations/suits whatever they are, for each level theme. :)
It looks as if there'll be just so much to do in that game.
I also noticed at one point, stars are actually shooting towards enemies. (The same stars you collect during play). I'm guessing the 'second player' can do that to help out and all. :)

Like I said before: I'm happy nintendo is selling so much, but I wish there was more for me to get too, besides the usual minor upgrades of games.

More 3rd party shit please.
I think the problem so far, is that it's all we've been hit with. 3rd party shit. Nothing of real quality, anywhere to be seen, yet.
At least Sony didn't seem to try to steal anything from Nintendo this time. That's a first.

Well, I did enjoy the old Megaman games... and Streetfighter :) but there's hasn't been any good ones on Nintendo systems since Alpha 2 right? I actually still play that game frequently, which is why I keep saying I don't need next gen to give me what I need per say. ( I would have been happy with a Cube version :))
You're probably referring to Resident Evil though :) ehehehe.
I'm not a big fan of the shooting when it involves blood and gore and stuff, but I'm actually willing to get over that (weak stomache permitting) and give it a try. (again, me small demographic)
The only problem I have with that is that if I do turn out to enjoy that kind of game, it'll just be another game on that list of "sequels of this series will be good".
New ideas please :)

You're forgetting Alpha 3 on GBA (though that wasen't done by Capcom), Capcom vs SNK 2 on GC, and the Megaman Battle Network series on GBA and GC.
And Capcom had brought some new idea's in the form of Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and Godhand. *cough*Clover*cough*. Though i wonder if any of those franchises will find their way onto the Wii...

0_0 don't know anything about Capcom vs SNK 2 on Cube, but then Europe never really gets that sort of thing. I'm still waiting for the Megaman compilation as well...
Didn't like Viewtiful Joe much...Okami is not on Nintendo system and uhm never heard of the other ones...
I think that unless next year will be a great Nintendo year, i'm gonna have to get another console afterall...or just keep playing my old games haha.

I can understand that this is the problem for serious gamers, but out of the 260,000 Wii's sold in the US, how many of them do you think went to "serious gamers"? The Wii brought in a whole new crowd of people for its minigames and wii sports and wii play and wario ware, and I imagine thats how Nintendo wanted to startoff their next gen console.
Not to mention great games like the ones we will be seeing in 4 months take a while to develop with the new Wii control system and dev kit. Goldeneye came over a year after the N64 was released, and Perfect Dark 4 years later.

You missed by a whole order of magnitude. That should be 2.6 million Wii in North America. But the actual numbers are closer to 3.6 million, now.

Finally got a chance to watch more Metroid Prime 3 vids, as well as read the hands-on for that and Mario Galaxy. The more I hear about those, the more excited I am to play! After reading the hands-on for Umbrella Chronicles, though, it's sounding less and less appealing. Dammit Capcom, why didn't you just make it like RE4 like you were supposed to?

You guys complaining about a lack of 3rd party support have to look at it this way: Publishers probably looked at history, specifically how Gamecube did. After seeing that the Gamecube sold poorly and the PS2 dominated everything, I'm betting most publishers decided to commission games to be made for the PS3 and figured it wouldn't be worth spending the money on Nintendo.
What happened? The Wii took off like a rocket ship and the PS3 languished behind. Note the alarming number of game cancellations for the PS3 after the systems had launched. Meanwhile, after the holidays, reports came out about companies slating more games to be released for Wii. Given that it's going to take them at least a year to really crank anything worth buying out, I'd say 2008 is going to be the return of 3rd party support for Nintendo.
What we've gotten so far were the scrap offerings. The initial "Eh, it's just a Nintendo system. We have a crappy movie license to make a game on, right? Do that one." and the later "Oh shit, that thing's actually selling? IT SOLD HOW MUCH? Why didn't we make games for this thing? Quick, port Scarface over while it's still hot!"

I would've said a little over 3 million, but you may be more accurate. Still, those serious gamers are holding out for games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart... I can point out even more who are waiting for the release of Metroid and Mario Galaxy, just to get their hands on a Wii.

Another problem stemming from the under performance of last Gen Nintendo systems is 3rd party developers put their third string, fourth string, and lower dev teams on projects, turned out lesser games, then complained that their games weren't selling on Nintendo platforms. I think it was Miyamoto who pointed out that if they want to compete, they need to put their top development teams on projects. That's what they need to do, and should start doing this generation since the Wii is gaining a dominant place in the market. It's just going to take 3rd parties a while to catch up.

So is Smash brothers online or not? I didn't see a mention of it anywhere.
First of all, Smash Bros isn't making a serious appearance at E3. It doesn't need to be there stealing the thunder of other titles. Everybody who's interested in Smash Bros already knows about it and is being fed a steady flow of tidbits daily. So the likelihood of any Smash related announcements coming out of E3 are remote.
Second of all, it's doubtful Smash Bros will have a full fledged online fighting mode, if it even goes online at all. This is due to the limitation of sending info online. Lag, even a little lag, would kill, murder, and destroy the Smash experience. Smash Bros relies on precision response time. If Smash Bros does have an online component, it will be something different from the primary game play.

The person in charge of it (a woman, go figure) decided that she didn't like the whole idea of a testosterone-filled, babe-stuffed, giant extravaganza and announced the downsizing while claiming it was to promote and encourage smaller developers to break out at the show. Basically, she didn't like how big companies came out with giant, house-sized booths, scantily-clad females, and bombastic speakers and swept smaller companies under the rug their noise was creating.
So, short version: They downsized it to give smaller companies a chance to show off.
Personally, I'm still just seeing the same news with the same bravado from the same companies. She probably pushed the downsizing on E3 because she was embarrassed to head up the "Biggest Nerd-Circus on Earth."

Except that a lot of companies just aren't bothering with anything this year, unless it's their own private showings.
Notice how there's been like.. 20 conferences so far, this year? Even Squenix had their own, instead of showing off at E3.
I think they need to go back to the whole centralized thing. Maybe someone should make their own mega center and rent it out the other 360 days of the year and put E3 on during an extended long weekend or something.

Thanks for explaining :) It actually makes some sense, and it is respectable that she'd want to give small time developers a chance to shine, but it's not really like that in practice at all is it...
The whole booth-babes argument is lame in my opinion. While I myself am morally againts the display of women in such a fashion, we see the same thing at car expo's and whatnot. I'm surprised no one actually used this case to ban these booth babes on any event...
Oh well, I guess we don't have to expect a lot from E3 anymore, but at least the quality of the games will still be the same. (which actually isn't a good thing always n_n; )

Err..that doesn't jive with what I heard. What I read was the big three, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, where unhappy with how much it cost to show and how it had turned into a circus. The Expo's original intention was as a media and business event, but it sort of ballooned out of control to the point where the guy who took out the trash at EB could get in. The show was downsized to return it to it's original function as an event for legitimate game news media to cover upcoming products and for games industry people to meet, network, and do business.

Umbrella Chronicles is not very good. I played it.
There's no sense of any tactile feedback for the different weapons. The voice acting is RE1 levels of horrible. It's hard to tell if bullets are hitting enemies or not. The aiming is very imprecise (since the Wiimote is not a light gun).
The game you should be excited about is Soul Calibur Legends. If you must play RE:UC, I suggest renting it first when it comes out, otherwise you'll probably be very disappointed.

Wii.. really isn't as revolutionary for shooters as it was originally expected to be. There's just no reliable way to have PROPER aiming, without having a reticule on the screen to go by, since each setup is completely different.

RE:UC sounded really fun to me, too. It's too bad Phthisis is saying it's not. D: I'll definitely still rent it myself, at least. As for the different versions of games, I think it's pretty damn cool, but also a little disappointing at the same time. After playing through RE4, I'd love to give RE5 a shot (assuming it's done in the same style), but from the looks of it there're no plans to port it to wii...especially seeing as how they'd have to dumb down the visuals considerably, if what I've seen is accurate. As long as the "spin-offs" we get remain high quality, I guess I can't complain too much. After all, if I REALLY wanted to play the other games, I could always just break down and get a 360...or ps3, when they start getting their super-high quality games cranking...
...eventually...

Well, there is a reticle, but the Wiimote just isn't as accurate as a light gun because of the technology it's using (as opposed to how a light gun hooks in to your TV AV jacks). Plus, the Zapper is very awkward to use, IMO, because the trigger is on the front handle, and your rear hand can't provide support. It just kind of sits there grabbing the back handle and serving no purpose.
On the bright side, Ghost Squad looked pretty good, so if you need a shooter, that should be ahead of UC on the list.
Also, I got to see NiGHTS in action, and NiGHTS fans shouldn't be disappointed.

You know.. the more I see about Mario Galaxy now, the more I'm worried.. It almost seems like the 2p co-op is a little more important than it may seem, on the outside. Like you might actually -require- a second player, to do 100% in the game, because of things like freeze-frame attacks on enemies and objects, and collecting the star shot things, as well as firing at triggers.. I hope they don't do that, and instead make it so the 1P game still has that functionality, just with the cursor being moved on screen by the same player. Might be an issue for the buttons, though.
And there was word a few months back, that HAMMER was on hold.. Which sucks. I want a good, ol'fashioned smasher, in the vein of Gauntlet, using the wiimote to control where you violently swing your weapon. :(

From the looks of it, the second player only facilitates a game that is already possible to bit with one player rather than making it possible to beat solely with a second player. The only thing the second player seems to do that the first player can't is freeze/move enemies/objects (both players have been seen shooting stars with the pointer control). Now what would be infinitely more interesting is if the second player could actually hinder the first player's progress in a pseudo-competitive fashion, hurling obstacles into Mario's path to make him slip up. That would make me want to call a friend over for sure.
And yeah, sucks about Project HAMMER, I glanced over last year's announcement and only a few months back rediscovered the content as more exciting than I originally thought. I hope Nintendo goes back to it eventually.

I have to say after having actually watched the Nintendo conference I feel less bad about things.
It still amazes me how connected these people are to their products and seeing grown men and women actually having fun on stage like that...that's amazing.

The second player can help and hinder Mario. They can freeze enemies, but also put them in the path of Mario at the last minute, or freeze Mario at inconvenient times.
So your wish came true.

De Blob looks amazing. I played it back when it was just his student project, translated into crappy English. Big props to THQ to picking this up for Wii, you have my respect.
And how wild is it that a big shot movie director sits down for a game of Wii Tennis with Miyamoto and afterwards decides he wants to make three games? Looking forward to all three of Spielberg's games, especially Blocks.

Just so you know, Smash Bros. was confirmed to be online in some aspect or another back in 05. People are expressing doubt over that now (understandably, I suppose), but still.

Yes, I remember that, but the key words are "in some aspect" and they backed off from online statements since then. Reasons why Smash online just isn't really feasible have already been covered by people more technically knowledgeable than I. If it goes online at all, it'll probably be for leader board tracking and such. Whatever ends up happening, my advice to all is don't set yourselves up for a disappointment. Regardless, it'll still be a fantastic game, as was Melee.

The problem is, if it couldn't be done with Smash Bros, then why are they going ahead with other fighting games, on 360? Sure, it's tricky, but there's a lot of things that they can trim from throughput to make it a non-issue. But, we'd have to hope they do something about their own damn network responsiveness, first. I still time out when trying to connect to the VC shop, far too often.

I was thinking the game wouldn't be possible online either... till someone mentioned to me that ALOT of online games should be ruined with lag but aren't. Like Counter-Strike. It registers headshots completely smoothly, and that is EXTREMELY precise timing. Unless your ping is absolutely through the roof the gameplay is great.
Why would SSBB be any different? .... I really know nothing about the subject, so I'm looking for an answer to that question.

The problem here is in the way that players can interact with each other. CSS is really ingenius in the way that it does it; if you watch at a LAN party, everyone is a fraction of a second behind where they actually are on each other's screen; You're aiming at your opponent on your screen about 5 feet behind where he is on his screen, yet you can still hit him. How? Well, when a shot is fired, the server calculates where that person was that amount of time ago, and if that would have been a hit. If it was, they die / loose health. The problem with Smash is that players directly interact; they're constantly changing each other's position. This makes it so that the server has to keep each game as close to the other as possible, instead of just compensating for the lag by seeing where the player used to be. Otherwise, you could be clearly out of the way from an attack, but since you were close on your opponent's Wii, you all of a sudden get smashed from a good wavedash's length away. Even so, I'm confident they can pull off at least 1v1 with relatively low lag; if SSB64 can run like that, then there's no reason Brawl can't.

Too bad so few actually decent or good games are coming out on VC that weren't done by Nintendo. Fuck, most of the rest of them have been released on Gametap and a half dozen Best Of.. or Collections titles.
Oh well. Not like most 3rd parties actually know what the hell they're doing yet. By this time next year, they should be in their groove. Until then, we have Nintendo and those few parties who actually saw the potential for Wii and have solid experience with it.
Hopefully companies like Ubisoft won't put their F-string teams on future developments, and create abortions like.. say, the Splinter Cell series has been, on Nintendo platforms so far.
I've spent 40 bucks on the virtual console, buying 1 SNES and 3 N64 games.. and don't regret it. SMW, Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X and now Paper Mario.. all very fine, solid games that have aged quite well. The only one of which that I owned, was Super Mario World, way back in the day.
And even with access to emulation and roms(hell, I have roms of all the games I've bought on there so far), I'd still rather play them this way, because it just feels.. well, proper. And paying 5-10 bucks for an actual, quality game isn't a bad deal.
August 21 just can't get here fast enough, though.. oh well, at least the local Blockbuster is unloading their GC games cheap. Their remaining New titles(unopened, still in original shrink wrap), are only 15 bucks, and their used ones are anywhere from 10 to 20 bucks. Plenty to keep me occupied until Prime 3. :)

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to those too. Super Mario All-Stars too, and I'd also really like a chance to play Earthbound. They're gonna need to add hard drive support or let us save VC games to the SD card and play them directly off of the card soon though, since I only have about 600 blocks left and still have plenty of other VC games I'll be downloading (I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation). I was wondering why my Wii got to be so blazing hot lately. It was even hot enough to warp the plastic slightly when I first touched it realizing it was hot. Funny thing, though, I never noticed it up until a few weeks ago that the heat of the blazing sun was inside my very own Wii.

Huh....so it could be an actual hardware issue. I was under the impression that it was just the console firmware not wanting to run the fans in WiiConnect24 mode.
I wonder if this got fixed on the later consoles. I got my Wii in early February and it likes to make itself nice and toasty in standby mode.

Since my Wii isn't that hot, and I feel bad when I have a red "off" power light, as apposed to my comforting orange "standby" one, I'm keeping my Connect24 enabled. Plus, I like the glowing slot.
Too bad Nintendo hasn't seen fit to grace us with any updates since Everybody Votes Channel.

I prefer to have Connect24 off. But for some reason, when you do, it doesn't let you use the "Everybody Votes Channel". I don't see how that matters--it should just update the polls when you enter the channel.

That shouldn't be an issue here. The Wii is supposed to be connected to the internet "24/7", even though when I used the wifi dongle, it was never literally connected 24/7, it would just connect every so often.
Anyway, this console is supposed to use this feature, it shouldn't be an option to have to disable it because it makes your Wii run very hot to the point of damaging it.

Back when the Wii came out, didn't they do power consumption tests, and found that when the Wii is in standby with WiiConnect24 enabled, it used like.. almost 100% of the power it uses when actually being played?
I think maybe Nintendo needs to issue a firmware update that is a little more selective over what components are being used when the system is in standby, since it doesn't need to be running EVERYTHING but the GPU at 100% constantly, just to do periodic checks.

Some kind of firmware update would be nice, considering that it could have the capability to cause some real damage to the components.
I think there was a story somewhere of the WiiConnect24 mode cooking the GPU enough to cause visual artifacts.
At the very least, the firmware should turn off some of the chips that aren't used, and it really ought to run the fan.

I say, forward/back and turning with the stick, strafing by tilting the nunchuck. That way, all your movement is covered in the nunchuck and you still have free aim with the remote. The "doorknob" thing.. not to great, because you'll get RSI really fast from the constant twisting either way, just to rotate, while strafing is something that's more optional/advanced in most games and is often done by either locking on, or using a trigger to disable turning.
One could also add a "tilt" function, so you can lean the nunchuck forward to make the character lean forward, while using the remote to aim/look around a corner. As well, if tilting the nunchuck to the left and right were strafing, it would give it an added bonus of being able to readily control rolling. Tilt to the side then flick the nunchuck and you'll roll the way it's tilted.
The only real problem, is that in the games I've tried, the nunchuck has a bit too much recoil effect in the accelerometers. If you swing too hard in one direction, it might completely ignore that movement, in favor of being triggered by the recoil and make you go the other way. They need to either fix the sensitivity, or find a way to.. tighten them up, in future models.

This is a problem I've had with Sonic and the Secret Rings. When I'm trying to jump from an edge to another edge while grinding, I flick the Wiimote one direction, but the recoil sends Sonic flying the other direction, usually to his death :(

That was one of the reasons why I couldn't stand the game.. the other was the pirate ship. I hate trying to do a 3D environment with 80% of the range being completely blind. Particularly when you're trying to go straight up and can't see more than a few "feet" around you.
The other part I hated, was trying to do those damn towers, going back and forth, sliding across the wall then having to actually run and then do it again.. pain in the ass.
But, I think if you use the nunchuck to handle strafing in a FPS, maybe use the Z or C button to actually trigger the dash/roll move in whichever direction the nunchuck is actually leaning, it could work really well.

I read an interesting article saying that Nintendo didn't have to even show up at E3 to hype the public or show other devs their wares. Nintendo cares little at this point about hyping people up about titles at trade shows because the Wii is selling ... LIKE CRAZY. We all know that. Sony on the other hand, you see they're pulling out all the stops with all their content to try and get more people to buy their system. It's all about publicity, and the article went on to say that Nintendo is strategically waiting to show off their AAA games once other consoles have their "killer apps" move closer to their release dates. So... yeah, E3 wasn't too great for Nintendo, but then again, Nintendo didn't really need it to be good. Sony on the other hand, they NEEDED E3 this year to trying and get more support. They had a pretty damn strong lineup too. Eyecatching graphics, interesting exclusives and timed exclusive announcements.
Nintendo's doesn't have to cater to the crowd to get more sales because most of the crowd already have Wii's of their own. It's good to have Nintendo stock. No lie.
Anyway, yeah, E3 wasn't cool for us gamers over at Nintendo's booth... it was mediocre, but then again, Nintendo will have a ton of secrets and AAA games to show off to battle hype during strategic times.

I am really excited about Soul Calibur Legends. A action game with Soul Calibur animation just sounds awsome to me. Also I hear the controls are very immersive. You can't get stuff done by just making small flicks of the controller, you actually have to get the movement right with the correct timing which is similar to a fighting game. All in all it looks awsome but I think I'm still going to rent it first before I buy it.

Finally able to watch the Nintendo E3 conference.
So far, I think they're doing really well. Opening up by showing the cultural phenomenon the systems have become, then showing the figures and breakdowns, and following it up by announcing that there's going to be 100 more games between now and the holidays.
And at this point, there's about 8 games on that list that I actually want. Which isn't too bad.
Also, the zapper doesn't look too horrible. You just need proper distance to make good use of it.. but the design is garbage, for how you hold it.
But, hey.. 20 bucks for the zapper, WITH a game(which they didn't actually announce what it is, so I'm guessing it's Duck Hunt revolution or something).

Yeah, it happens a lot I've noticed, usually when there seems to be no good reason for it (not a lot of objects on-screen, etc). It's a little annoying, but it hasn't detracted from my fun yet. First time I've ever gotten to play the original, and I've been really enjoying it.
On the topic though, has anyone noticed that Paper Mario has load times between the home menu and the game? They have a little spinning N64 symbol that I've never seen, and it's on-screen for quite a bit longer than I'd anticipate as far as load times go. I guess their emulation isn't quite perfect. The only other N64 VC game I've dl'd and played so far is Mario 64 which I didn't noticed with that, so I dunno how isolated this incident is for sure.
EDIT: To clarify, when going from the home menu and back to the game there's the loading time. It also happened the first time I started the game, though not since then when I've started it.

I noticed the load screen, too. I guess there might well be a really good reason why PC emulators seem to have issues with this particular game.. they might have done things that don't emulate well.
But.. doesn't this mark the final N64 title that actually worked near 100% through the Zelda emulator?

It was exposed shortly after the launch of Wii, and was more or less confirmed since then.
The emulator used for Ocarina of Time on Gamecube, was hacked open and had other N64 roms injected into it, way back when. Only a small list of games actually worked properly, with others having some level of visible glitch to the emulation. So far, every N64 game released on the VC(perhaps with the exclusion of Paper Mario?), have been games on the "work" list.
As it is, each game through the VC comes wrapped in its own emulator, adding at least a few MB to the filesize for N64 games.

While widely disliked, the hardware in the N64 was incredible. Even the biggest game never fully exploited the multiple channels and processors. If CDs would not have existed, the N64 would probably have been the best example of how to do a console. The tech in there was years ahead of its class.
But yeah, because it lacked nice FMVs, people didn't accept it.

Keeping with the Virtual Console theme of this thread, why do NES games lag? I suspect it's a lot like it is with PC emulators.. it took years for the emulation scene to do anything that actually ran 100%.
But given that we're actually paying cashmoney for these things, you'd think Nintendo would be pounding out a 100% emulator a lot faster.

Kirby's Adventure crawls to a halt because the original NES lags, and Wii's NES emulator is spot-on with the NES. When there is too much shit going on at once (ex. too many sprites), lag occurs.

Maybe they're going for more of an FFX-style game, where for the most part it's linear, until you are given the ability to actually move around freely, late in the game? At that point, you have an airship anyway, so why not make it as easy as possible?

Except all emulators I've ever played with had the original system lag on them. Even MAME.
But for the systems supported, it really is good emulation. Not that it's rocket science for old systems like those.

Fix up the sprite draw issues, get rid of the damn slowdowns, and fucking make them how they should have been, instead of keeping the cheap games cheap.
I assume you're referring to the removal of cheat codes from Kid Icarus...? Taht's the only instance I know of where they changed a VC game.

Isn't that exactly what he said? The lag on Kirby's Adventure is a perfect emulation of the lag on the original NES version?
Yeah, but NES emulation has been perfected long, long ago, so I don't see what the big deal is. Also, considering that Nintendo is for the most part, strictly against retuning the older games, I doubt they will 'fix' the lag even if they could. It's just a matter of their policy.

North American Virtual Console releases today
Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) - I often dream of golf too
FUCKING YES.
I loved that game so much...this makes me very happy.

I never said it was a big deal, it just annoys me that they can't fix the lag with newer technology. They also said originally(long ago mind you) that they WOULD be upgrading games, adding updates to games even. I, for one, WANT updated graphics on NES games, even bumped up to 16-Bit SNES graphics would make me happy, though Ideally you could download some additional "3D pack" that puts 3D models and high quality backgrounds onto older games ala NSMB. Though I doubt that would happen, I don't see what's wrong with a bump to 16-bit, and fixing of lag issues. As well, they already have "retuned" at least one game, Kid Icarus, they removed the classic cheats.

I agree. Nintendo obviously COULD, but for some reason, they keep neutering themselves. I think it makes sense for profit's sakes, but I hear the cost is negligible for an update or even an overhaul like with the Playstation Network/Xbox Live Arcade games.
They do the same with the friend-codes for the online connectivity too. They're probably playing it safe, maybe a bit too safe right now. But that sounds pretty much like Nintendo to me, aside from their hardware and DS innovations.

That's the thing that bugs me, too. They said they would look at upgrading/improving the games. Now, they don't even touch them. I fucking want games improved in the same vein as the ones on XBLA, or even what's going to come out for PSN. Just fucking do SOMETHING special with the games.

I don't know if you guys know this already, but TOS2 from what I've read you don't walk to where you want to go on the overworld map. You just point and click and then you are there, no more walking around, but you just go to your locations, which seems kinda weird. I don't get why they took that out.
Quite sure they meant it in a Phantom Hourglass kind of way. pointing in the general direction you want to walk, clicking and walking. Like an RTS

That game has so much potential. If the ocean you deal with is at the very least the size of LoZ:WW's ocean, then it'll be just fine.

Agreed. Too bad there aren't many details about it. Apparently you dive around and collect marine life. You can also dive with other people over WiiConnect.
But, I wonder if you get attacked by sharks.

Okay...
Errr... the next few months are gonna be expensive:
August: MP3
September ???
October: Endless Ocean
November: Super Mario Galaxy
December: Super Smash Brother
Am I missing something big?
I'm sure I am. So do you have a suggestion for a september release?

Yeah, Nintendo is raping my wallet. Don't forget about mario kart next year - I bet everyone is going to want to have their own racing wheel. Everyone being whoever plays mario kart at my house.

Releasing anything notable in September would be silly. I doubt even Nintendo is brave enough to attempt to go head-to-head with Halo 3's release.

Tecmo Bowl had all the player's names changed.

I don't think Nintendo is releasing anything big in september. Mario Strikers Charged, Battalion Wars 2, and Raving Rabbids 2 could be considered big.
As for me, the next few months are going to be expensive as well. I am planning on getting Metroid Prime 3, Guilty Gear Accent Core, Godzilla Unleashed, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. Brawl, Soul Calibur Legends, Namco Museum Remix, Dragon Ball Z BT3, Raving Rabbids 2 and Lego Star Wars 3. Not to mention I still want to buy Excite Truck and Wario Ware. I have never wanted so many games for one console in such a short time-span.

Dewy's Adventure and Battalion Wars 2 (as dsx mentioned) are releasing in September.

Batallion Wars was pretty good (it was short and had annoying voice acting though.) I hope Battallion Wars 2 improves it.
