Ok, 2 things, but first this: I did not know that you could download game demos, and even PSOne games onto your PSP from the Playstation store. I feel somewhat lame since I JUST found out about it, but I feel even more AWESOME since coming across the demo for God of War.
Seriously. This game is amazing. So amazing in fact that I can only describe in the following fashion. It's like sucking down pure sugar from a straw and having the most amazing sugar shock ever, but instead of sugar, it's pure, unadulterated, gory violence, which is AWESOME. Even the music punches you in the face and then says "Hey listen, I'm badass, and you'd better go play this game NOW!" Seriously buying the game.
Now, on to Patapon. I'm not going to tell you why you should buy this game, but rather, I'll just point back to Ifrit's post above my own. The game is great, stupid fun, and it's only $20. Go buy it.

Hey gang, Game Days sale at gamestop is still going on, and you can get some serious discounts on a few games(like 50% off at times) like Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max for the PSP. Only 10 bucks right now for a new copy. Seriously, go grab it. It's Street Fighter Alpha 3 with like 13 game modes and 37 characters, several of which were added to this version from other capcom fighters. It's actually a very good port.
You can also grab games like Odin's Sphere for the PS2 for 20 bucks n' stuff.

Speaking of PSPs, I just bought one this Tuesday. It's the red God of War model. I had heard about being able to install custom firmware that lets you load up emulators like ZSNES and whatnot. Well, what I did not know was that you have to downgrade your firmware first before you can install the custom firmware, and I actually just updated to Sony's 4.1 firmware. Any ideas on downgrading from 4.1 or am I pretty much fucked?

From what I've read in this thread, the PSP Slim models all have a firmware high enough that a hack hasn't been found yet, so you were probably out of luck even without upgrading the firmware.

Well shucks, that kinda sucks. Hopefully there will be a hack that I'll be able to use sooner or later, but I'd also hate to try it and end up with a busted PSP. I had originally planned to buy a Nintendo DS and a Cowon A3 so I could have games and movies to kill a few hours of downtime at work but decided on the PSP instead since it could do both. Playing old ROMS on it would have been the icing on the cake, but it's nothing I can't live without.

I don't see the problem with the Star Ocean remakes for the same reason I don't have a problem with FFIV DS. They're not the same game anymore(save Second Evolution, which is almost a port).
In my book, FFIV DS and at least First Evolution are definitely worth another buy, while I'd only really recommend Second Evolution if you never got a chance to play the game(like myself).

Ah, important question guys. I just bought a used PSP Slim from GameStop. I bought the thing because I thought it could be easily hacked for emulation. This is not the case. I Googled myself into a coma trying to find out how to run emulators, and I learned a lot, but I still have to to this pandora's battery thing for it to work, which by the way requires a fat PSP. Well shit I have neither that nor a friend with one. My question is, should I return the PSP Slim for a fat or keep the Slim? Its the toughest of moral dilemnas because it is a battle between my instinct to have the most updated crap and my American need for instant, easy gratification. Just tell me what you'd do.

I'm pretty sure that its against this site's regulations to talk about that kind of stuff. I just like the follow the rules.
Also, enjoy your inferior product. Its not that hard to hack a PSP Slim. I did it in about 20 minutes and all I needed was some software and a screwdriver. I plan on buying a new battery though just because I'm not too wild about using a modded and then unmodded battery.

That's my question. I was really looking into the dissidia bundle but was holding out to learn more about the psp-go. How exactly are we supposed to use it as a gaming tool without external media disks? I would assume that the only way would be to download each and every game individually off of the playstation store, but that still brings up the question, what if you delete it for lack of space? Would you then need to buy it again after you want to play? I don't know. The thing that got me interested was the second analog thingy which looks like it goes only up and down and the rumor of the touch screen. What do you all think?

But still, umd's have an advantage over their downloadable counterparts. They don't take any space on their hard drive, and more importantly, you can find them used at a discounted price. Considering their other PSOne games are under PSOne/PSP section yes.
They allow both console and hand held gaming at a one time payment... The way I understood it, you had to download it on the PS3 before downloading it onto the PSP. However since I have no PSP, I only know that you can play downloaded PSone games on the PS3. Mind you make sure it says PSOne/PSP, as I almost made the mistake of paying for a PSP only title.

Good Question, once again I don't have a PSP so I can't give you a definitive answer for that one except for remapping the extra 2 shoulder buttons to one of the directional joysticks; Push left on the joystick for L2, pushing right for R2.

All PS1 titles available for download on the Playstation Store (PSS) are playable on both PS3 and PSP. With one of the recent updates to the PSP firmware, you can now download PSP and PS1 games directly onto your memorystick using the PSP, although I wouldn't really recommend using the PSP's rather weak wifi to do it unless you really don't have a PS3.
Also, all game purchases made on the PSS are availble for redownload as many times as you need. In fact, I think you can actually download them to a certain number of different PS3's (with no limit on the number of PSP's as far as I can tell) if you use the same PSN account.

yeah well you have to have an OFW to do that (of which I don't know that many, since I've helped everyone I know hack theirs) since the PC version of the PSS requires the latest firmware and Dark-Alex's is still only on 5.01 IIRC

Hey just to let you guys know dell.com will be selling a PSP 2000 for $109 after $60 instant savings, I think its free shipping too! It's starts on June 24 - 25th. I'm gonna pick this up for myself. I hear there isn't a big diff between the 2000 and 3000 versions in fact I've heard that the 2000 version preferred. I think its a good buy so I'll pick it up and maybe get a 4GB stick too.
There's a lotta PSP games I've been wanting to play, all the MGS games,God of war COO, FF dissidia, and some others that I can't think of right now.

If you guys haven't checked it out, download the Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! (http://www.holybadman.com) demo (http://www.holybadman.com/demo/index.html) from the PS Store.
It's an incredibly unique dungeon-building game with a funny sense of humor that has you playing as the bad guy in a "Final Fantasy"-style JRPG. While the graphics are a throwback to NES era gaming, the game mechanics are really complex and defending the dungeon takes some good strategy and planning.
Also, on the website, you can sign-up to win a free copy of the game on release. You have to enter 5 codes on the contest page (http://holybadman.com/contest/index.php) to sign-up. I'll list the codes below.

Yeah...there's quite a bit of lag.
You can get by on a couple of games that have game specific speed hacks, I was able to play soul blazer quite well. Also, changing the sampling of the audio to something like 22khz (or whatever the lower sample rate is) also helps alot, and since the psp speakers are not so great, you probably wont notice the audio quality... much.
But yeah, i'm surprised that snes emulation is worse than gba emulation on the psp.

are you buying through the PS3 PSN or the PSP's own PSN
if you're going through the PS3's then 1. you buy the game 2. you download the game 3. you hook up your psp with a usb cable 4. you choose the game from the PS3's xmb and it installs

The bundle has the 3000 series. And I'll be doing it through the ps3 psn. I tried downloading a psp demo just to see how it would work, but then I could actually install it on my ps3 HD. Obviously it wouldn't play, but I wonder what good it would do to install it. Anyway, before attempting to install it, I press triangle, select copy, select the psp memory stick as the destination? Do I actually install it on the ps3 or not before copying it? And when selecting a download file from the network, is there a difference between wanting to play it on the psp or the ps3? That would probably answer everything. Thanks.
And I don't plan on hacking it.

Install everything on the PS3 before you copy it to the PSP.
For the difference between wanting to play PSP or PS3, it will say what system the game is for. PSP games will have "PSP GAME" in the thumbnail whilst PS3 games should have "PS3 GAME" (some don't iirc) in the thumbnail. Obviously PS1 games can be installed on both.
PSN should have them separated into sections so it shouldn't be that easy to mix them up. I guess there are a few titles that happened to be released on both (like Echochrome) so just watch out for those.

Just curious if anybody bought a PSPgo? My two main concerns (aside from it being more expensive a regular PSP) are how some online reviews complained about the size in respect to cramping hands during play, and also that I'm not sure if all the games I'd want to get (specifically MGS Portable Ops, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, etc) are necessarily available in download format. I know they scrapped the plan of giving people who own the UMD a downloadable version of the respective game, but I don't know what this means for which games are avaiable on PSN. Anyway, if anybody has one, I'd be curious to hear your impressions of it.
Also, I had read something about the PSP-3000 having some problem with interlacing, and messes up the visuals at points in some games. Has anyone experienced that, and if so is it bad enough that I'd just be better off with an older PSP model? Thanks in advance!

What Did I Do to Deserve This? in UMD format, you can place a pre-order for it here (http://rosenqueen.com/product.php?productid=16301&cat=22&page=1). If pre-order sales reach 1000 (orders), the game goes into production. If not, all orders are cancelled and you aren't charged anything. Also, the game only costs $19.99.

so i got a micro sdhc to memory stick pro duo converter today. not a big deal - i've been using one for ages. except this one allows for TWO sdhc cards. so, 2 8gb cards cost me 8$ each, and the converter cost me 3$ at buy.com. ten dollars total for shipping the three (two separate sellers), and for 30$ i have 14.5 usable GBs of games on my psp. for 60, i could have gotten two 16gb cards, but i already had one 8gb card and didn't need THAT much stuff.

yes, gollgagh, that's it. there are SD cards at buy.com that are branded SanDisk cards, and they're 8-10 dollars depending on the day. go with 16gb sticks if you can - they're not much more, and 32gb is almost enough to put every game i've got on there (i'm currently at 47gb if you don't count the repeats in different formats...and yes, i own them all).

imo NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/06/psp-go-sony-may-have-confused-hardware-for-service-1.ars)
The smaller screen and somewhat cramped controls of the PSP Go may actually make the system a worse platform for games, not a better one.
Existing PSP owners shouldn't feel slighted by the new hardware: the system they already have is about to get much, much better as a digital device. Sony doesn't need to launch hardware to begin its assault on retail-sold games, although it certainly got us all talking.

It's perfectly fair; you can do it to them. Dodging and blocking is your friend. Dissidia was never intended to be an easy game if you want to do things like farm equipment drops in the Blackjack duel coliseum.
I wouldn't necessarily go for either of those two weapons; there are other choices that are better depending on the type of build you want. Who do you main and how do you have them set up?

But still, that's a hell of a typo. I mean, they didn't just accidentally press 4 instead of 3, they added in an extra graphic and text along with everything else. Someone had to notice that there was no such thing as a PSP-4000 at some point, right?
Sony, of course, isn't commenting on it. Typically, that means it's true or true enough that they don't want to give anything away. The more PSPs they sell now, the better, because as soon as a new model is announced, people will hold off on buying one.
Then you have the fact that a lot of the new stuff Sony had this year was leaked early. This could simply be another case of someone leaking it out.
So, honest mistake on the part of the advertising department, or accidental slip of the lip?

No, I'm talking about the friend cards that you get when you use passwords. Each one of them will let you battlegen a different coloured gem, as well as one of the battlegen-only items that you need to use with password recipes (stuff like the Al Bhed Primer that comes from the Auron friend card - and no, you don't get to fight Auron; I think it's Jecht who's the enemy for that card).
I'm not even sure what you're talking about; is it the Inward Chaos story mode or something in Arcade Mode? Inward Chaos is the only story mode I haven't mastered. I main Zidane, but have all the other good characters except Shantotto at level 100.
There are 5 duel coliseums. Airship is 0-30, Falcon is 31-60, Invincible is 61-90, Lunar Whale is 91-120, and Blackjack is 121-150.

So I just have to know. If there are enemies up to lvl 150, is there a way for us to level our characters past 100?

No, 100 is the cap for players. Skill and gear are what you need in this game.

So I was about to buy MGS protable ops. But then I saw portable ops plus. Can someone fill me in? Is it something like Substance and Subsistance?

Portable Ops is the game with the story
PO+ is basically all free missions that are not story based, but has gameplay enhancements. (Plus you can import your old PO team)
Play Portable Ops first.

No, it's more like Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions.

So is it even worth it after I play portable ops?

well it really depends on how much you like to play the portable ops missions
if, by the time you finish PO, you feel like you can't get enough, I'd suggest going for it
if not, then not
definitely don't feel obligated to buy both at once

Further, do you guys think Portable Ops is worthwhile? Now that Peace Walker is shortly arriving, I'd have 2 reasons to get in on the PSP, assuming they're as good as previous iterations of MGS. Curious to hear what you guys think of it.

anyone else get lunar: silver star harmony? I picked it up, kind of enjoying it for the nostalgia of playing one of my favorite games from the ps1 era.

Ok, something is screwy here. Kojima has always had an interesting sense of humor, throwing us strange bits of things like the first MGS4 trailer featuring big boss and Raiden. But this one takes the cake. Look at this video of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. They actually made a music video.

And if that link doesn't work

That was pretty fun to watch. The staging of the characters on the beach near the middle of the video had me thinking that Big Boss and the others were almost about to break out into dance along with Paz.
Otherwise, I think it did a good job of quickly introducing the characters and their faction affiliations. Butterflies are an interesting style choice for the series, but they seem more tied to the character (Paz in this case) than to the game or its reputation.

So the main theme for Peace Walker is this.

As usual, MGS theme songs have no equal.
What genre would you even put this in?
I'd say it goes in the genre called OH DEAR WHY IS THIS SO AWESOME.

MGS Peace Walker only supports local multiplayer. kind of a shame when portable ops could be done over the interweb. Anyway, I heard there is a way for people to play online if they connect to a ps3. Does anyone know how to do that? I'd like the opportunity to do so before I go off to my graduate program this fall.

Basically. Is it out of the question to run a line to the ps3?

There really isn't a way to do it without a 150ft cable going to the opposite end of the house, down the stairs, back through the basement to the other end of the house. So unfortunately, no. The cables going down to the entertainment center are not accessible because they go through half the floor, across the floor on the inside, and then down into the cable box.

That, or a supported wi-fi dongle and Xlink Kai (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/). If you have custom firmware, you just need their plugin and the software.

Wait a second. The supposed reason that you need a wired connection to do ad hoc party is because you are using the ps3's wireless signal for your psp, and need to hook up to the internet through the only other means. But I just tested and I can connect to the internet from my psp, wirelessly to my ps3 (through private network and not internet), and wirelessly to my router. That means that my ps3 has 2 wireless signals running through it at once. Why wouldn't ad hoc party work then?
