Unfortunately, we can't do anything more than we're already doing. We've been working as fast as we can to delete the posts but some threads (not even FORUMS) have 10+ bot posts 20 minutes ago I cleared out the ReMixing forum and it's already got a ton of new posts. I think this is a losing battle. We need Dave's intervention.

The small forums I was moderating was probably getting 5 or 10 spam posts per day, and that was with me deleting every new registered bot every 3 or 4 days (yes, I actually went through every new registered user with 0 posts and looked to see if they looked like a bot). We had about 20 new bots (and still do) registering for the forums each day.
I got so tired of deleting so much crap I eventually disabled account activation by e-mail. New users have to get an admin to activate their account. I'm happy to report we've been spam free for several weeks.
I'm surprised these forums haven't gotten a lot more spam. The mods must be doing a really good job of keeping on top of it here.

Anyone else has admin powers? If someone who does come online, he should disable registration completly for a while (email validation will not work), and ban the alerady registered bot accounts, or if you have a backup of the forums from 2 days ago, rollback to that date by restoring it (altough this will cause lot of good posts to go)

Dave's the only one with admin powers. When we switch to vBulletin, which should be VERY soon (within a week) all mods can ban, and hopefully Dave will promote Larry to co-administrate the forum for emergency situations.

Nope, djpretzel is the only admin and he's also the only one who can ban people. If mods had ban powers (which some of us will in vBulletin) we could have fixed this in 30 seconds.

How about a phone number? That way, you have to actually talk with a mod to activate the account.
Think of how easy it would be to spot the bots. "So, you want to join the OCR forums, huh"?
"Affirmative."
"Yeah, somehow I think you're a spambot. Account denied."
"Affirmative."

Maybe we need some sorta new account activation method.
I can't really think of any ideas though.phpBB offers three way.
Right now we're using the second, that implies a validation e-mail.
The third one is stronger, each new account must be hand-activated by an administrator. OLRemix used that system for a while to prevent me from joining. It's not very effective because I registered like 5 alt accounts while they were running that policy...

Maybe mods could send a PM to new joiners below a certain postcount. If the PM is not answered within a certain time period, then they get purged!

Personally, I think adding a code for registration should at least be considered. Some string of random letters and numbers that have to be typed in at the bottom of the page for signing up. Places like the Underdogs site uses this system to prevent bots from downloading files from their site (you have to put in the random sequence before you're allowed to download), and it seems to work pretty well. So why not do something like that here?
I mean, if the registration process stays as it is, the vBulletin OCR will be just as swamped with bots in no time at all.

There should be a picture of a famous video game character like Mario, Zelda, or Sonic, and you have to type in what video game character it is. Don't see how bots could deal with that.

That would be unfair to people who haven't heard of certain video game characters.
I think the best idea is Kitten Auth. Have 9 pictures, 8 are cute little kittens, 1 is a cute little puppy. You have to click the picture of the little puppy to register. The idea is to have 4-5 of these screens which you have to click through so there is only a remote chance that spambot will get through.

Basically, the only type of spammers that ever get past a CAPTCHA are (a) humans, and (b) bots specifically designed to break your system. The more unique your system, the fewer bots will be designed to break it. There is already a script that can break phpBB2's CAPTCHA with 97% efficiency (http://sam.zoy.org/pwntcha/). The Mario/Zelda/Sonic test would certainly be unique enough that it would last until someone figured it out, and of course, you can offer 1 or 2 retries if people don't know who the character is, just as a safety; it won't help bots unless those bots have a significant success rate already, and it'll at least slow down their registration.
The so-called "kitten test" is also a good idea. Especially if OCR provides its own kitten pictures, making it more unique.
Switching to vBulletin and giving moderators more power over banning won't stop the fact that the spam is there in the first place; it'll just put more responsibilities on moderators. Not that it wouldn't be a good thing anyway, but more measures are needed.

Actually, they may not. People may have heard of them, but that doesn't mean they know what they look like. Not everyone explores console gaming, and not everyone has gotten to play those games on the various systems they've been released on (especially Zelda and Mario, since they're Nintendo-only console characters).
And has been pointed out in the past, people who sign up for this site aren't necessarily video game players. They may simply be coming here because they want the music, and couldn't care less about video games and their music. They don't care about the musical sources of the remixes. They just want the remixes they like.
Edit: Oh, and how about this... when someone joins, they have to click a link that plays a ten second clip of a famous video games theme. They then have ten seconds to play a quickie "Name That Tune"-like game, or else they have to start the whole signing up process over. Sure, it's a bit mean spirited, but just think of the fun!

Hmm, The Coop's suggestion gives an idea. Maybe setting up a question where the answer can be found on the site.
ie: Which ReMixer has a ReMix named "The Ken Song"?
I'd like to see a spambot with the efficiency to search the entire site and answer that.

There's just one problem, Arek. Do you really think people are going to want to dig through the website to find the answer, or even dig through 150 different images to find the one that looks like what was pictured? Considering the rash of seemingly ADD-riddled people that've been getting more and more common, I sincerely doubt it.
I like the idea of the user having to fill something in. But, what if the question at the end pertained to some aspect of the sign up process (something like "What word follows, 'By clicking 'submit', you agree to these _______'?", or maybe a fill-in-the-blank setup along the same lines)? Then the answer is either right there on the screen, or just a "Back" button click away. Then you still have the user needing to look for an answer (thus making it a greater chance that it really is a person and not a bot), but it makes for less of a wild goose chase through images, tunes and forums.

Maybe use a generator that pulls out one of a few random methods and presents that, along with the directions, in some sort of tagless, randomly named image map, so they'd have to specifically create a bot just for OCR.. and then every now and then, just have a new method added, or change the internal links for verification and stuff?
The Coop
12-29-2006, 02:13 AM
Here's an oddball idea...
Since OCR deals with video games, their music, remixes, and the like, why not try something a bit different. When signing up, at the bottom of the sign up page, a word will appear. You'll be asked to type into an empty box what that word is. Each word will have something to do with video games, remixing or OCR in general.
But, to avoid having the bots know what the word is by searching the html page, each word would actually be a gif or jpg, and that file would be named something nonsensical (like "1-45.gif"). With a bunch of these to be randomly chosen when people show up, it would make it a lot tougher for bots register, but it would make it about as easy as possible for those signing up.
Anyway, just a thought I figured I'd throw into the breeze.

Managing a small forum of my own, I have recently found the best method of removing spammers is to have a little text prompt during registration. Like, a required field where you must answer a simple question like "What is 1+5?" and "Type the word cat". If you have enough of them and they vary widely, but are simple enough not to frustrate noobies, then you can really stop a lot of the new automated spammers that can read those captchas.
I've seen spam on my site drop from 2-30 a day to 0. And I've seen spam registration drop from about 8 a day to 0. It's only been 2 weeks, so I'm not sure if somebody will bother to crack my questions.

Looks like they're getting even smarter than just copy-pasting other replies. Seriously, either I overlooked where someone said what they posted or they actually took the time to make an account, respond with something generically-worded by someone who doesn't speak much English, and has a french credit link in the sig...

Well, I think the issue with that is that it might end up making it difficult for actual people, who aren't spammers, to join.
Plus, for every step we could take to count down on spambots, the people who make the spambots come up with two more ways to get around it.
KyleJCrb
12-16-2009, 04:36 PM
If one or two custom fields were added to the registration form, that would throw off most of the spambots and cut down on registrations significantly. Just make them really simple (like "what color is the sky?" or "are you a spammer/spambot?") and that will help.

I appreciate the effort, but this account has no posts, no sig, and no visitor messages yet, and the search doesn't yield lots of forum accounts on vB forums like you'd normally see for a spam account.
Please wait until an account actually posts spam in some way before reporting it in this thread, because if it doesn't have posts, a sig, or VMs, then a mod actually has to investigate a little deeper so that we don't mistakenly ban a legit account. If we DO end up banning a legit account, it's kind of a pain to unban because not all of the mods can remove an IP ban.
In other words, while it can be fun to do so, don't bother sitting there watching the members list trying to preemptively catch the bots.

The email address supplied in some of the memberpages on those sites lists it as donavon56 at allaboutebooks.info, which is tied to a few sites that deal in ebooks.

Search Engine Optimization is a web marketing company. That uses spambots.

Spam sig, and lots of new accounts ona lot of sites, with no posts and the same sig.
http://www.google.ca/search?q=benjaltejar149&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
There seems to be a sudden surge in spambots getting past the registration system.

If its email address is "marquestony81@macrosoft-system.info", then it's a bot. Macrosoft System is another "search engine optimizer" aka, a company that uses spambots as part of their "exposure" service.

If he/she changes his/her sig to buying flash memory cards from www.zoombits.co.uk, then he/she's spamming. I found a few account on other forums, all recently created within 24 hours or so, with the same link in their profiles and sigs.
See for yourself: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=owaispoul&start=0&sa=N
All created within a day or so, covering dozens of different sites from games to religion to fishing. Kind of odd, don't you think?
