Super Mario Bros. 'frivolous funk'
It's always cool to hear live versions of game music! This is pretty funky, except it lacks a good bass instrument. It's there but it really doesn't stand out much. Other than that it is a great listen! The Mario theme is probably more recognizable than our national anthem!

Um... what's so funky about this? All there is to it is a very high tempo. All I can hear is guitar and drums. Guitar misses alot, and drums are a bit too crazed for me. And almost no bass!
Not my thing at all.
It's still cool though ;)

It's rock, but I don't see anything else recommending this. There are PILES of better smb remixes out there, so really don't touch this one with a ten foot pole. The songs are so poorly done that I'm 90% sure that the posting went like this:
guy #1: Hey remember that time that guy told you to play super mario brother's music and you did?
guy #2: yeah, so?
1: I recorded it.
2: And?
1: Well I found this site online that archives different video game arrangement. We should post it.
#2: Video game Music? Ha losers. Well why not? It'll be good publicity for the band.

Ow. 8O
THis song SUCKS.
I have no idea what Pretzel is talking about. Talent? Where? THis is some random band (that has apparently never heard of tempo) ramdomly playing notes that sound somewhat like the SMB theme. Ugh, stay FAR awat from this one.

Have to agree with all the negative reviews.
Sloppy sloppy sloppy, and not too enjoyable.
This was the 19th mix to ever be posted. Give the guys some slack here.

Why are we reviving this thread?
Well, whatever, it sucks ass. Sloppy rhythm, empty "arrangement," and all-around badness. The best part was "Hey, can you play Legend of Zelda?" "Uh...we're working on it."

i would have to agree with djpretzel that this song is good. i mean how many live remixes are there on this site? not to many. It could have been better. but the fact that it is live and that most of you probally couldnt do any better at palying it on guitar anyway. B+

I liked it, I thought that it was cool, how it was syncopated and funky.

IT SUCKS! IT'S REALLY HORRIBLE! I know that you can play a guitar, so play it as well as you can, not like this!
How disfigured!! :?
It does not know to move with the melodies certainly, although to touch guitar. The sewer´s part? It was not very pleasant...

That's not how it works.
We'll give our honest opinions, even if Moses himself remixed it.
If we hate it, we'll say so.

This track just popped out of my DAP's playlist, and I felt compelled to write my thoughts on it. I feel it's too bad that so far the comments have been so negative... Ok, so they're not playing to absolute perfection. Ok, there's plenty of better SMB remixes out there, but bottomline is: this is fun to listen to. Whenever this track comes up, I can't help but smile a little.
And IMHO, it's a bazillion times better than that out-of-tune, random-arsed P.O.S. Music Of My Groin "remix" of the Zelda theme. That one makes me *cringe*!
To each his own, I guess.

hmmm...not bad. Not bad at all. Great shit of music work looks really bad, the percussion is poor! Frivolous have some cheap imitation talent. Huh, keep up the BAD work.

well, the drummer clearly knows what he's doing, but that guitarist sucks! Sounds like he's drunk.

Ok I registered JUST to reply to this thread.
The Frivolous Funk was my band, I'm the drummer that "deserves to be shot". :?
Anyhow a few notes on this tune:
1.) This song was performed live 'by request' at California University of Pennsylvania (http://www.cup.edu/index3.jsp). As you can hear at the beginning of the tune, this was a request - we didn't rehearse this to play that night so please excuse the 'sloppy, sloppy, sloppy' sound.
2.) We were not a 'videogame cover band' - that's not what we did. This is something we played for fun once in a great while (maybe 4-5 times live out of 200 shows total).
3.) As far as the complaints about the high tempo: fans of SMB will remember that when there were only 99 ticks left on the clock the music would double in speed letting you know to hurry up - hence the music speeding up half way through the tune.
4.) Complaints about the bass: It is worthwhile to note that we were a 2 piece band - there was no bassist. The guitarist (Cary Child) played an electric guitar with a guitar synth like this one (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/150097/) attached to it to reproduce bass notes when he played the lower strings on the guitar. A very novel approach on his part to fatten up a 2 piece group if I do say so myself.
AND FINALLY....
5.) I didn't post this here. I'm not angry about it showing up but I have NO IDEA how this got here on this site. I was listening to some old recordings of my band yesterday and decided to do a Google search on our old band name and found this site. This tune was recorded live in April of 1999 and the band broke up about a year after that - it's strange that the tune has gotten new life here!
...Well I hope I've helped put this recording in perspective. Enjoy!... or not. :?

I really enjoyed listening to this, and i hope to the people that made insults ever thought "I can play better" because this is good stuff here ^^

@MaggotBrain: Heh. Did you ever do the "Legend of Zelda" request? Not asking for the file or anything, just wondering.
Also, despite your thoughts, this is a pretty cool song. I don't think I've heard a live Mario song before. Kudos.

It's great! Its funk, therefore, does not have to be exact, or perfect. It's enjoyable. If you don't like the band, get out of the pub. Chances are, they probable were drunk but who cares? I think I'll listen to it again...

The band may be called "funk," but there is little to no funk in this requestrocity.
If you appreciate Mario Bros., music, or the music of Mario Bros., I don't see how this is enjoyable. This is just a stumbling through the general rhythm of the Mario Bros. theme. I'm surprised they played this five times on tour without taking the 20 minutes to sit down and transcribe it. I could understand this performance if they hadn't heard the music since playing the game in 1986, but every other remixer here spends time on their work. If there is a worse piece on this website, I'd like to hear it.

Strange how this wasn't pulled in any of the lockdowns. Sure it's not an easy piece to play and the recording quality is good enough, but it's really annoying how it doesn't really play the actual melody, only almost, and sometimes not really at all.

It's an arrangement Dafydd. An arrangement. You can clearly hear the source and a few passages are verbatim, like the undreground BGM.. Honestly. I do not think it should have been bulled off during lockdown.
Most of all it's skillfully performed and very good.

I know it's an arrangement. So are many of the songs that have been no:ed or removed over the years...

I know it's an arrangement. So are many of the songs that have been no:ed or removed over the years...
I know you know, I actually mentioned some points that you might have missed though. Like the Underworld BGM and good playing (sure some misses but it's live and the drummer is skilled). I still wonder why you think it should've been removed.. As long as you recognize the source (it IS cleverly arranged, and again for emphasis the Underworld part) it's all good, right? It still holds true to the important parts of the standards, even though the standards are higher now there's no point in removing the older songs because they are sub-par to the newer ones, it's still in line with the site rules.
EDIT: I guess you meant this part is holding it back?
3. The source material must be identifiable and dominant.
* While interpretation and original additions are encouraged, arrangement must not modify the source material beyond recognition.
* The amount of arranged source material must be substantial enough to be recognized.
It's very identifiable. Anyone could tell this is mario. And it's very dominant, in fact it's the whole song. It's not modified beyond recognition because, as I said, anyone can hear the mario theme from this. Same goes for point two.
I guess the judges (and many others obviously) might not agree with me and say that the original melody is not intact in terms of what exact notes are playing but I stand by my statement that it's very much recognizable AND a somehow interesting arrangement of a well-known tune.

True. I guess I just misunderstood the reasons why some of the other songs were removed. I still don't like this one.

THAT I can very much understand and accept ;)
..though honestly I love it :) it's so playful
kickin it old school, this is a fun sned up of the themes in a basic live setting. No frills, just fun.

It really isn't that bad. At all. For a song that was done at request and live, it has that feel and it works here. Not the best take on the theme, but honestly, there are worse ReMixes of the same theme on the site and for what it is, it's fine. I like it myself.
