Okay, I'm going to lead this thing. Here are the rules:
1) To join, post in this thread. You have until midnight EST on Tuesday, January 16th, 2007. If you decide to drop out before then, you may, just PM me and I can remove your name from the list.
2) I'll put all entrants into a single-elimination bracket. Positions will be decided randomly. In the occurrence of an odd number of participants, the last person to be (randomly) decided will be given a bye for the first round. You will be notified by PM who your opponent is, and when I get a bracket drawn out, it will be posted in this thread. Once a match has been decided, I will notify both participants of the next round.
3) You will have three weeks to organize your game with your opponent. We will be using the SNES version of Tetris Attack, so how you organize your game is up to you, as long as it gets done. Wins will be based on a Vs. best of five points match. (In other words, there's no need to play anymore once one person has reached three points.) I would appreciate no last minute results, as the sooner people get their match on, the sooner I can figure up winners. Times for each round will be decided depending on number of entrants. If the match is not decided by the alotted time, then both people forfeit. If one person in the group is being deadbeat about it, notify me, and I'll see what I can do.
4) When an outcome to a match is decided, both people must PM me with the results. That way, I can verify that both people gave me the same result. (I'll have the bracket, so I'll know who plays who.) I'll update the bracket accordingly. Oh, also, a person may forfeit. In this case, only the person forfeiting has to PM me.
5) Winner of this tournament will be allowed to choose a game for next month's tournament, as we are hoping this can be a continuous event. More details when it comes to that. As for other prizes, I really have nothing except bragging rights. Maybe if a successful sig maker could whip up something cool *hinthint, sigmakers!*, but don't plan on that.
If you have any questions, or feel I left something out, feel free to PM me, and I'll clarify things! And hopefully this will work out, and be a fun event. Best of luck!
Instructions:
First, you need a netplay-enabled emulator (I suggest the latest version of ZSNES, link provided in Links below) and Hamachi (ditto on the link). ZSNES comes in its own package, so just download and extract from the ZIP. As for Hamachi, you'll need to install it. Once installed and configured, click on the Join Network button and join network "OCR Tournaments" and password "ocremix", both without the quotes. (I would appreciate that you do not join the network unless you are ACTUALLY in the tournament.) Once connected to Hamachi, you will have a special network IP. Open ZSNES, and click on NETPLAY, then on INTERNET. It will ask you to either start a server or connect to server. You can work this out amongst yourselves, because it really doesn't matter who does who, just be sure to give the other person your Hamachi IP. Once connected to each other, you'll have to both load the same ROM file (or compatible, they have to be the same type). One person can send a copy of the file to the other person, if necessary. After this, the game should start, and you can both play!
Links:
ZSNES:
There is apparently a new version of ZSNES out, v1.50. v1.50 has no netplay, so you will need to use v1.42.
1.42 (Windows):

1.42 (Mac):
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zsnes/zsnes142.zip
Hamachi:

As for the ROM, we're not allowed to link to it, so you'll have to obtain it on your own.

I do have a USB gamepad, I just play a lot faster and better with the original SNES pad, so I'll be practicing a little this week.

I get errors when trying to build it under both "methods" I came across.
xerol@xerol-laptop:~/apps/zsnes_1_42/src$ ./configure --enable-release
checking build system type... configure: error: cannot guess build type; you must specify one
xerol@xerol-laptop:~/apps/zsnes_1_42/src$ sh ./autogen.sh && gmake && gmake install
Generating build information using aclocal and autoconf...
./autogen.sh: line 6: aclocal: command not found
checking build system type... configure: error: cannot guess build type; you must specify one
The first came from a FAQ and the second from the actual documentation. I can't seem to find this "aclocal" anywhere.

If you can give me instructions on how to hook a SNES control up to my comp, I'll do it. I imagine some manner of USB device must exist that would do it, but I don't know what that would be or where to get it.

Are we doing Vs or Time Trial? I think it would be cool to do tournaments for both.
Mewtation

Wins will be based on a Vs. best out of five points match.
Though, if demand was up, we COULD do both...
Xerol Oplan
01-10-2007, 04:59 AM
Maybe the timetrial could be an ongoing highscore thing, and we could just keep a top 10 table. Although isn't the time trial single player? I guess you could have the second player be a "witness" to report the score back.
Geoffrey Taucer
01-10-2007, 05:05 AM
No, there's such a thing as two-player timetrial -- and the mechanics are different enough from 1p time trial that the differences in scores are HUGE.

All that matters is the filename. If the filenames are different then one person changes theirs. It isn't too challenging. And no, the link cannot be posted.
kamoh
01-10-2007, 06:45 AM
It's against OCR rules to post a link to the rom - at least I believe it is.
The mods can say some TOS bullshit and ban you if you do, although I don't think they would, I would just safely say DON'T POST IT, and we'll trade same copies and make sure that everyone has the same copy when they actually play against eachother.
This means we have like ten players, right? Mewtation, expect an IM from me very very soon about tournament format :)
I'll try and get Bahamut to join.

Just some advice - you probably want to keep it one person heading the comp, and the winner choosing what game and possibly the settings to be done with it, with the head posting the winner's choice.

Sorry, Pi. You need to seize the opportunity when you get the chance.
Mew: Not cool, though. A red flag came up in my head when this thread was made because of the above reason (among others whenever a contest is created on OCR because I've been in charge of more of this kind of stuff than anyone else). It's your call now, but there's always a certain level of PR involved with running a competition.

No, but I didn't see anyone else starting one until I suggested it, and I stepped forward to lead it. In fact, it took two posts for anyone to even provide any recognition I mentioned it at all. Shows how willing everyone was to join. Is it my fault for holding back a day or two? yes, but that's rhetorical. Don't answer it.. I was making sure I had everything set. While there were people around more suited to running the it, I didn't see them starting anything back up before this came around.

Not the best, but all you have so far, right? I left room for a name, which we don't have yet. I figure something simple and obvious like "OCR Gaming League" should cover it, but thats not up to me (grr...). I knew I said I wanted to see Mario Kart in the future, and Street Fighter should be on everyone's lists, too. Of course, you could just replace Ryu with someone/something else easy. Up to everyone what to do. Nice, yes?

I played a little on ZSNES last night on my PC Gamepad. If worse comes to worse and I end up having to play with that pad, I won't be much of a threat to the better players. I mean, I can still pull off 5 and 6 chains but it's with much difficulty as I just can't control the cursor and flip as quickly as I normally can. This is opposed to when I use the SNES pad, I can usually do 10 chains with the same amount of effort.
All in all, I might just pick up a PS2 to USB converter as I probably don't have the time to wait for the shipping on an SNES converter. I'll probably be on IRC later tonight to try some pick up games if anyone wants to join. I still need to figure out Hamichi though.... Does anyone have a quick tutorial handy?

I've been talking on the IRC channel about tournament format and some rules and other things which I'm not going to apologize for because I'm knowledgable on these sorts of things. I'd just like to see a show of support or disdain for the following:
1) NON-POOL SCHEDULE (recommended)
First 2 weeks: All players are assigned four opponents to play. Some scoring system is assigned.
Last 2 weeks: The top 35% (rounded-up) of first-round finishers are assigned to a championship bracket (seeded with byes). Everyone else goes to a consolation bracket (seeded with byes).
Estimated maximum number of matches: 6-7
2) POOL-BRACKET FORMAT
First 2 weeks: Each player is drawn into some number of pools (probably 4).
Second 2 weeks: Each pool's top two finishers play in an eight-team bracket.
*NOTE* I don't like this one - it's not particularly complete or even.
Estimated maximum number of matches: 6-8
3) POOL-POOL-SEMIS-FINALS FORMAT
First 10 days: Each player is drawn into some number of pools (4, 5, or 6)
Second 10 days: Each pools top two finishers play in one of two pools.
Final 8 days: Each second-round pool's top two finishers play semi-finals and finals.
Estimated maximum number of matches: 8-10
So these would be significantly more matches than a simple single elimination bracket. I particularly like the non-pool option (1) because everyone plays the same number of first round games and the bracket is skewed in favor of higher finishers. And there are fewer matches.
I don't think most people can fit in 8 to 10 games in a month without just brooding at their computers. Even 2 a week might be a little tough for some people (shouldn't be though). But I'd really like to throw my weight behind idea (1).

I just wanna emphasize that it isn't pool play - it's hard to explain it without pen, paper, and a presentation.
What I do is make a big circle, and put "x" points on the circle (where x is the number of players).
Each player is assigned to a point on the circle (at random)
Each player is assigned matches against the two next players both clockwise and counter-clockwise away from them in the circle.
If a player wishes to leave, their opponents are given replacement matches easily just by removing the leaving player from the circle.
There's other stuff :P

RULES (also not official):
Find your schedule above (should be easy to tell which one is yours), and play the four opponents that you have been assigned.
You are responsible for contacting your opponent through PM, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, etc...nobody will hold your hand, you must initiate battle.
If you are unable to contact your opponent or are having troubles actually playing them, you should alert Mew to the situation - he will issue restitution penalties if necessary.
Play best 3-out-of-5 matches, posting results with the score out of five as well.
The First Round will end on February 2nd, at 11:59 PM EST.
Players are ranked in order using the following tiebreakers:

Playoffs - February 3rd to ???
The best 6 players advance to the championship bracket. The top 2 of those recieve byes into the semi-finals, the other 4 play in the quarterfinals.
The champion of the tournament picks the next month's game.
The remaining players who actually played games advance to a consolation bracket, with as many byes necessary to create a single-elimination tournament.

Wow, McAfee Firewall and ZSNES don't work well together.
I opened ZSNES to practice with DarkCecil13 and McAfee gave me the standard pop-up "omg ur program is conecting 2 intarnet," but instead of allowing me to close the window and grant access to zsnes, it hangs and seizes control of my mouse.
So I reboot and we're going to play again later. I've allowed zsnes internet access through McAfee. I type in DC13's IP and hit connect, but I'm using an old version of ZSNES. That's easily solved -- I close the program, download 1.42, extract it and run it. I hit connect again and McAfee pops up again with the "LOL this program h4s changed since ulast ran it!!1" window and I get the same problem as before. I alt-tab to the chat and tell DC13 that I'll reboot and disable the firewall to play.
I just rebooted. Before making it into Windows, I got a STOP error: IRC1_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (iirc). So I'm posting on my brother's computer atm.
Anyway, my apologies to DC13 for the wasted time. Now, can anyone recommend a new firewall/AV combo? I've heard good things about that Kaspersky one.

I may have to drop out here. Apparently in linux ZSNES doesn't play well with dual monitor support, which means I'd have to reboot every time I wanted to play. I'm going to try to get a crappy windows machine up tomorrow.

everyone,
once one player has won 3 games, you need not play anymore.
DarkCecil, your games have been logged as a 1-3 loss and a 3-0 win, accordingly.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/7628/ocrsnes3bn.png
I made a total-standings table, as you can see above. It's not as simple as the other one, but I haven't decided which one I should update.
The darkest shaded players are the ones with semi-final berths currently, the mid shaded the ones with quarter-final berths, and the light shaded ones are the people that aren't getting into the playoffs.

So what happens if (when) some one drops out or wont play?
If Mew agrees to it, I'd like to introduce the bypass system into this tournament like I've done with the OCRCL. It's a little bit difficult for people to figure out, but it works out right.
When an opponent isn't around or doesn't want to play, you can "bypass" them.
For each one of YOUR opponents, you are linked to one of THEIR opponents (that you don't already play), and that is your bypass opponent.
If you play them before the deadline and both your matches with the original opponent go unplayed, the bypass will count just like a regular match.
If your original opponent plays your bypass opponent but not you, then the original opponent will be penalized and you will be rewarded (assuming they are avoiding you and you are not avoiding them).
If a player drops out, all their bypasses are realized, and the standings table will be affected ASAP to reflect this.

EVERYONE
Last Day for First Round Matches is THIS FRIDAY
11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time, which means that you only have a few days left.
If you are having troubles playing your opponents, then contact myself (kamoh) or Mewtation - Mew has final say but i'm sure that we'll discuss several things. This is known as 'reporting' in the chess league, but will likely be done a different way here (maybe not, who knows).
I think ultimately you're going to see some people credited with unplayed losses to bolster their tiebreakers, and some people will simply be eliminated from the competition.
Your best bet is to play a bypass (see above, contact me for assignments if you're confused), and keep searching for your opponents.

It's up to mew, but these are the brackets based on the guidelines set forth originally. Of course I think that we should have done a pool/bracket or pool/pool/bracket setup, and there's a good (but not great) chance that DarkCecil would have excelled. Anyways, there would have to be some sort of change, and I'm sorry about it in your case, Cecil. Random draw ends up bringing in some excitement though, and allows lesser players to reach a lot farther than they commonly would in a seeded tournament (even though we really couldn't seed this).

There were a handful of matches that we had to throw out due to desyncing issues, and you won half matches, and we had some tied 1-1 matches that were desynced too. So I would say your on the same level as I about. Given right conditions, I could've totally lost that round. Thanks for the good competition!

Can we get this thing finished and get on to the next tournament?
I think that mew and I will consult on the format and things when I get a chance to talk to him later, but I'd be willing to say that this was not a disaster per se, but should have been done differently.

I'm gonna drop out if I can't find time to play in the next few days or so, but with working 60-some hours a week, I doubt I'll ever have time.

So with Xerol dropping out, it looks like I'm paired up with linkspast, right?

Play whatever games you can that might be possible to play. Linkspast would be next for you I believe, but if vega12 is on, play him to simulate the possible final.

And in a strange twist of fate Linkspast makes it in the semifinals...
Bring him and Calpis to a fight to the death!
Who will be the victor, only time will tell.

Let me know who the winner is when you are done battling it out so I know who my opponent in the finals will be. I look forward to it!

I played both linkspast, and Calpis.
I beat linkspast 3-0.
I beat Calpis 3-1.
So I guess this means the tournament is over? Then I shall select Mario Kart as the next title. Thanks to everyone for a fun tournament!

I look forward to it :)
I think that we're going to go with a strict monthly tournament format, and I have some ideas for how to do it.
For now, let's open it up to discussion: what did you guys like/not like about the tournament this last time, specifically in terms of format?
I thought that each match probably should have been best 2/3 instead of 3/5, since the tightest it ever got was 3-1.
The availability of a lot of players wasn't just questionable, it was brutal. This isn't effectively prevented, but I require AIM screen names in the OCRCL for this reason.
I want to ensure that players will get a lot of games that count in, regardless of skill. This is why the format was the way it was last time.

I think one of the biggest issues was people not playing their scheduled games. So I say if you are going to enlist you better play, Especially if we use the same format.

I don't think that we'll use the same format - people were given many different opponents and, therefore, many different parameters for advancement. While single- and double-elimination does this, it's on a much smaller scale so that we can accept it, and it's to a degree that we are most interested in finding a single winner, instead of trying to advance the six most prolific/active players.

I don't think that best 3 out of 5 is a bad idea. Matches are quick anyway, and even though the closest matches were was 3-1, doesn't mean that the two players in question were that different in skill.
Also, in something like Mario Kart, there's a lot of luck involved, so making it 3 out of 5 would help make it a little more fair to those whose luck just happens to be a little dry that time

With mario kart will how will the tracks be decided? will it be random... or a circut and the winner is the winner.
