~CAVE STORY~
http://agtp.romhack.net/images/doukutsu/1.png
Well the game has been out for a while, but I only just got into it. As the game is amazing, and there is no thread for it... TA, DA!!
Well for those who are going "Doukutsu what?":
Cave Story is a freeware game that was released in 2004, after 5 years of development, by a Japanese guy who goes by the handle Pixel. It's a 2D Side-Shooter in the vein of metroid and castlevania. It has been hailed by many fans as the best freeware game of 2004 at least to the best freeware game ever made. The screen shot above does not do the game justice. The game features flawless gameplay, a very memorable story, perfect visuals based on chosen style and resources available, and an excellent sound track as demonstrated by some of the remixes on OCR.
It took me a while, but I just managed to beat Hell. My problem was that I could never reach the final bonus boss with enough health to survive. I mastered the Hell level in the end, and just scraped through with 10 HP left after the final fight. I have no idea how some guys can do speed runs with 3 HP.
There is news (old) that a very new publisher called variant is working to port cave story to the PSP with updated visuals.
http://www.variantinteractive.com/en-us/games/variant/cs/index.php
(Artwork Cover is Fan Made)
However, many fans, inculding myself feel a bit iffy about this publisher. Firstly there is confusion as to whether pixel is being paid, whether pixel authorized it, and if this company is capable of porting the game. Nintendo even denied Variant a development kit for the DS.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124986
In other news, there is a home-brew effort, with blessings from pixel, to port the game to the Nintendo DS.

Might as well keep this thread though, as there are a lot of noobs that haven't yet discovered this.

I finally beat hell on my second playthrough a couple months ago. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but after a while, I could pretty easily get to Ballos. Finally beating him took a while as well.
Pixel is my hero and I hope he makes another game of the same calibur as Cave Story. Oh, and the remix project is great as others have said.

You don't use that life pot for anything other than Hell and Ballos! That was my first mistake. I used the pot in the "final cave", which wreaked my chances of completing Hell. I had to re-start the game in order to get it, but then again, that is no punishment.

Soooo this is a massive necropost, but with good reason.
Indie developer Nicalis has been working on a port for WiiWare, which includes a graphics and music upgrade (both optional), several new game modes (including Curly Story, where you play as Curly Brace), and various other additions. The development was assisted and monitored by Daisuke Amaya himself, so his official mark of approval is set on the game. It's going for 1200 Wii points ($12) right now, so check it out! I certainly plan on doing so.

Okay, who else besides me hates nearly all the new music? Should have gotten OCR to do it :v
Also, 'Huzzah' into 'Oh yeeaaaah'? Who thought of that one?
Other then that I can't complain, the new graphics are nice and smooth (even if they don't seem too radically different except for things like Balrogs... nose thing and the entirety of Quote), and most importantly it's still fun! This is my fourth time playing it, and I don't regret dropping 1200 points on it.
p.s I've never ever beaten Ballos so that is my goal for tomorrow

Agree and agree. The new music is not bad by any means, just bad in comparison to the original, and the new translation is actually worse (which is kind of fucking sad since the original was a fan project and this one was presumably some sort of professional job).

The only real failure of the original translation is when the password "ritanomo tsukuudo" (doukutsu monogatari backwards, in Japanese script) got translated as "Litagano Motscoud" instead of Yrots Evac

I think I am going to get this, because a Metroidvania game on the keyboard is pretty frustrating for me; I'd rather play with a controller on a comfy seat.
I DO have 600 Wii points that are just sitting on my account, so after a quick recharge, I'll go for this and then later Rondo of Blood.
I hear all the extra modes were originally supposed to be DLC, but they changed it to just regular unlockables. Which is cool.
Even with qualms with the 'new' translation and music (I mean, the music can't be bad, right?), would you still recommend me to the Wii version? I'm always up for a good long and fun game.

I wouldn't get your hopes up from Curly Story, from what I see and hear it's
Finally, there is a mode that allows you to play through the main story as Curly Brace, which would be super cool if they had made the dialogue slightly more interesting. Curly is not a silent protagonist, and will say things like "I sure did!" when Balrog asks you if you knew Misery kidnapped the wrong mimiga. Other characters will also refer to you as "young lady". When you get to the Sand Zone, the protagonist will take Curly's place in the story and challenge you to a battle, though he will remain silent, and Curly will do all the talking. This makes the following conversation extremely awkward, and when Curly asks the protagonist if he's on the side of the mimigas, you are given a Yes/No prompt, which makes no sense whatsoever. Most importantly, yes, you can still find Curly's underwear, which is referred to as "your panties".

I really wanted to like the port, but the little things keep making me dislike it. The sound effects drowning out the already messed up volume setting for the original music, the horrible looping of the whole song a track finishes instead of using the original loop points, the music pausing whenever you enter a door, and no hard mode with curly brace just makes me :(

I don't have any major problems with the new translation. The fan one is more familiar to me, but there are some things that I like in this one (like the oh yeeaah! Made me chuckle a bit). Not a fan of the new music in general, it lacks a lot of the energy that the old music had (which was really important to me), but I think the new graphics look great.
Poke'G
03-23-2010, 03:02 PM
The new graphics are the best improvement, as they are better detailed while completely keeping the retro feel of the old game.
It's unfortunate that the new music isn't as good as the original and that the original music option's volume is ridiculously low comparatively, but the new music isn't terrible and not worth crying over, let alone condemning the game.
As for the translation... who the Hell pays attention to this stuff? The only part that jumped out to me as blatantly different was Balrog's "OH YEAH!", which I think is more in line with his character than the fan translation anyways. I cracked up when he burst through the wall shouting that.
If you liked Cave Story enough to have spent money on it, pick this one up. Pixel's even on board, so it's not going to get much better than this.

Yeah, the music is pretty awful... I really don't understand... It is very disjointed and... just really odd choices. For example, Egg Corridor... I can't really tell where the song starts or ends, except that I already know it, and theres like a ten second dropoff of music then BLAIRINGLY OVERLOUD chords... Just ugh. All of the original feel is lost... And honestly, a lot of it just feels like a mess.
There also seems to be a lack of percussion, something that really made the original music great. The cool beats are gone.
What's worse, the guy that did the music? He's posted. (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01853/)
And what's even worse, and what I don't understand... Pixel likes the new music and hates the old. :( (http://www.destructoid.com/cave-story-creator-talks-inspirations-sequel-and-more-168541.phtml)

Pixel is incredibly humble, and he played through the game like 50000 times over the course of creating it, so all his original music sounds flawed and boring and horrible to him.
And there's these guys who for some reason love it and want to bring the game to more people, so I imagine that anything they wanted to do with it felt flattering and awesome to him. So it's no wonder that he likes the changed versions better. As the creator, all he can hear in his originals are the flaws that detracted from the perfect realization of what he wanted the songs to be, and all he can hear in the new versions is that people loved his creation anyway.
Which I think is also an explanation behind some of the wtf translation decisions the new team made, like changing Grasstown to Bushlands, etc.
This might be a worth-while read for those who dislike the new music. (http://tinycartridge.com/post/469336063/cave-story-wiiwares-jacked-up-music)
Yann van der Cruyssen (Knytt Stories), who composed the remixed soundtrack, acknowledged and explained the problems: “As you’ve all noticed, there’s a lot of weird things going on with the audio, for instance: drum tracks not playing (there is actually drums in the music files we provided), instrument changes delayed, unbalanced mixing. I discovered this yesterday by watching “Let’s Play” videos, and [I] am as disappointed as you."

Yeah, basically. Nintendo has pretty much no mechanism for any update ever happening for any Wii releases.
If they were to go ahead and start talking to MS people about getting it on XBLA or Xbox community games, it might be worth holding out for that release to be bugfixed.

I seriously hope La-Mulana gets better treatment than this game. Nicalis really dropped the ball on what could have been a great game. I can understand if these bugs were on the game when the game was meant to be released a few years ago, but with all these delays, it is just inexcusable.

What? No, Nintendo can and has patched games from the Wii Shop Channel. I know for a fact that both Star Fox 64 and Military Madness were patched; not sure of any others. All you need to do is re-download the newer version, which is free to do at any point after the original purchase.
It's also how they update the internet browser. A Wii Ware title is no different.

Well that's 12 dollars I'm not spending :\ had been looking forward to playing the game with a real control but I don't really want to pay for a botched game even though it's something small like that.
Normally I wouldn't care that much and still buy it, but for a game I've already beaten 100% with a keyboard I can't justify it. If it does get fixed I might get it then. Nicalis seemed to imply alot of the problems manifested on Nintendos end, but I don't know if that's just them hunting for excuses or not...

So I got this, and I'm lovin' it a whole lot.
Beat it and got the normal ending, so now I'm working for the Good Ending.
I usually like to switch between the original and new music, as I like them both (though the original main theme is a whole lot better).
So, I'm wondering, you Cave Story savvy people, do I need to give that old man the very Polar Star I got in the beginning of the game to get the Spur?
Or can I give him the Snake and still get it?
My first time through, I took the machine gun, because impropmtu jet-pack = game-saver, but I've heard that getting the good ending is much more doable with the Spur's power (though I have the Snake on one save right now, considering how awesome it is).
Your thoughts?

I don't think it's possible to get the "good" ending if you trade for the machine gun.
Of course I may be remembering wrong...
I actually am not sure of all the conditions for the good ending, since some of them are just from me purposely challenging myself and others are just me being a completionist and trying to collect everything.
But a few of them are hinted at towards the end.

I've only ever really looked at cheat guides for RPGs and Strategy RPGs, like Dragon Quest games, or the DS Knights in the Knightmare.
Platformers I can usually do things well on my own, considering I've been playing them regularly since about 4 years of age.
The Spur/Polar Star question was just something I needed clarification on. As far as the actual endings go, I kinda intuited the whole "If you talk to Booster early" thing when I found I could just jump across the chasm, AND how the teleporter led back to Arthur's house (plus the whole balcony thing); the rest comes from simple exploration.
In either event, I reloaded my save, giving up the Snake in order to go through a very painful trek through the labryinth, Core boss, waterway (no jetpack/machine gun around here.... Ugh) and THEN getting the Spur.
WELLLLL worth it. Holy moly the gun is pretty great. Easily better than the Machine Gun, but I REALLY miss the impromtu jet-pack a L3 Machine Gun was.
In any event, I'm on the right path towards getting the good ending, doing everything right, essentially.
Now all I need is the Nemesis and I am set to take on any sorry mofo that comes my way.

When you get there, you'll feel the same way), and it is an all-around great game that I have already sunk more than ten hours into (comparing the say, 13 hours I put on my first playthrough of Metroid Prime 3 Corruption... amazingly, I'll have to say right now that Cave Story is better made than Corruption; coming from the biggest die-hard Metroid fan, that is saying something.).
Get it, or if you wanna be cheap, get it on PC.
However, this type of game (for me anyway) was a lot more comfortable with a remote (and no, no joypad; those things are gay).

Oh cool you got around to visiting hell :D
I've never done a speedrun before, because I suck and it takes me forever to kill stuff...and things, takes a good 10-15 minutes? I wonder if getting it on the wii would make it easier, I have trouble coordinating my fingers between jump/boost and letting go of a charged shot on the keyboard.

I don't do speedruns just because they aren't fun and they are time consuming to perfect.

Yeaaah, I'm satisfied with saying I beat Hell once. After two years of trying on and off to beat it. That was a good day. :D

I like replaying hell occasionally, it's good fun.
EDIT: Wait, two years!?! It's not THAT hard...

I didn't have the reflexes back then. I don't have all that great reflexes now, really.

Unless the game is [a] Metroid; then above point is false
And fuck Hell.
Jeeziz, gotta love the whole "lol be totally dependent on random health drops" and how Heavy Press eats away all the health you saved up, and Ballos...
This is going to be a long weekend, I can feel it.

You shouldn't be taking any damage from Heavy Press -- dodge one laser, fire up with your dual Nemesis guns and win.

yea i got to it a while back on the pc, which is what my fastest time is from.
i am finding it actually harder to play this on the wiimote than on the pc. my sanctuary runs on the wii keeps being around 7 minutes.
randomly, my psp sanctuary run is around the same as my pc run.

You wanna save those for Ballos' final form. RAPE.

Yea, save the Missles for the final form.
I also used swords, fuck the Nemesis guns. Just use the Spur for everything else.

Hmm, it might be because the button layout, Diagonal buttons are a bit easier on the hand than horizontal ones don't you think?

Here's a tip, stop taking damage and you won't have to rely on health drops. :P
I actually played through the whole game without taking the rocket launcher so I have no advice for making it easier on the weapon front. Although yeah, I also relied on the Sword and Spur as well, with a bit of fireball.

Nemesis isn't all that great anywhere except Hell, where I find it easier to keep track of dual nemesis guns rather than Spur + nemesis and whatnot.
That being said, I do use the spur on section 2 of hell to throw beams straight up in the hopes that angels will crash and burn into them behind me. Nemesis all the way for Section 3 though, as it's easier to cover behind you if you have a good weapon that maintains a high rate of fire (nemesis). I suppose Nemesis and Snake would work and be kind of overkill, though I hear that's the weapon combo that gets through it the fastest.
Just finished a run through cave story, where I took the time to beat the game with the Mimiga mask on, and it's not until they take the booster away that you realize how dependent on it you've become :-(
Also, I've gotten my fastest time yet on Hell at something like 8:40, and I'm kind of surprised, because even though I thought I was going through pretty slow, I usually take about 10 or 15 minutes to make my way through. Additionally, I only used the spur, and the missile launcher, seeing as how I don't like taking the time to level up any of my other weapons, and I don't like trying to avoid weapon energy with the nemesis.
Also, as a neat tip for getting through Hell, on the screen right after the screen with all the blocks falling from the ceiling, you can grab the two hearts in the bottom right hand corner, go back up one screen, re-get those hearts, and rinse-repeat until your full. I find that particularly helpful, seeing as how the falling block screen is the place where I take the most damage, and certainly makes things a lot easier.

What is this? A WiiWare game actually getting support after the game is released????
How absurd!!!!
I really, really, REALLY hope they fix all the damn bugs and glitches in the game, and for the love of God, FIX THE MUSIC.
oh yeah and really old bump. That pic in the article looks really cool, though that's just fanart.

Yay! Glad to hear about the bug fixes. I was pretty disappointed in that update.
Also--on my droidx, i just found the live wallpaper of the ending where you fly away on the dragon--I'm so happy!
also:
Oh yeaaah!! The other thing we learned is that audio is almost more important to Cave Story fans than artwork. For those ready to bitch about the audio, it’s perfect this time around, the first time around.:)

So the remixed n' fixed audio sounds pretty much completely different.
Like they just said "You know what, these remixes suck. Let's do them over."
It's so nice to actually here drum tracks on these pieces- the boss songs sound great for a change! Oh an actual loops that work, too.
Everything sounds pretty tight in their re-remixed forms, except for Plantation/Cave Story. It just doesn't feel like it should be a slow-paced song.
Even the menus are no longer shitty and more to the point.
That being said....
Nicalis fucked up again. Because the remixed tracks are incredibly fucking quiet. You have to put your tv up to very loud volumes to actually enjoy the tracks.
And yeah good luck seeing ANOTHER update to fix that.
