Since cell phones are now pretty much a norm, most people have ringtones for everything as well. I spent about 2 hours today making ringtones out of mp3s for mine. Most of mine are over 1 minute long though. Here's what I got.

Max Payne theme
The Haunted - Dark Intentions (full song)
Killswitch Engage - When Darkness Falls (through the first chorus)
Megadeth - Kill The King (Intro)
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (Intro)
Dry Kill Logic - Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck (through the first chorus)
Failure - Daylight (second extended chorus only)
In Flames - Bullet Ride (Through first chorus)
Fear Factory - Body Hammer (Intro)
Lamb of God - 11th Hour (Intro)
WWF - Triple H theme (version right before motorhead, only released on wwf.com)

What does everyone else here use?

I use vibrate because I find ringtones are fucking annoying. Also, if my cell phone allowed for actual custom ringtones, I would have the metal gear codec beep

I've got the older version of the LG enV from Verizon. I picked it up last September when the contract was up. Nice nifty phone, couldn't pass it up for the price they were going to give me for it. I still don't know how to use the camera in it or how to get ringtones but vibrate works best for me, since I am typically in a noisy environment most of the time and would miss calls if I just used a ringtone.

My phone's pretty cheap (like 10 or 15 dollars) and it doesn't handle the new-fangled ringtones very well. It does have a composer built into it, though, and I've been meaning to write in the Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare.

But, I don't get any calls anyway. So maybe it's not worth the trouble.

I just use one of the built-in, cell phone sounding ring tones that came with my phone. I am completely unwilling to pay $2 - $3 for a stinkin' ring tone. Nor am I willing to pay $20 ir up to $50 for a Nokia link cable and software to upload my own. It's just not worth it. Same goes for wallpapers, I won't pay $2 for a picture...that's what the camera feature is for.

Though I would love to have Bananaphone, Silent Mike!

I've definately got the FF victory fanfare on there.

Surprisingly, while browsing ringtones on the verison paid ones I found the opening to Samurai Pizza Cats, which I had to get. I'm going to have to switch back to that one soon.

Some people here have definately given me some good ideas though, so I'm going to have to fool around with my phone some more.

I have about twenty or so, which are mostly game ringtones (legacy of the wizard, megaman, zelda, final fantasy, ninja gaiden, fantasy zone). What I do is go to www.vgmusic.com, and download the midis. Then I go to www.mbuzzy.com and upload those midis to the account, then they send me a message, and my phone uses its browser to download ringtones. It takes a while because of the process, I bet you can get like 15 or so in an hour.

I know I sound like a commercial, but it's pretty damn awesome. I've never paid for a ringtone. Of course, there may be charges for accessing the internet but that's included with mine so whatever.

old-fashioned ring - for random calls

Clock Tower 3 OST:
Clock Tower - (for my parents & my woman's parents calling me)
Afterimage - (for my woman calling me)

Silent Hill 4: The Room OST
The Last Mariachi - (For calls from work)

side note*
I did have at one point the opening track for Rozen Maiden 2nd season as a ring tone from my girl as a surprise from her. When you're stuck using the bus one day, you're dressed rather formally and that song rings out very clearly, not obnoxiously loud mind ya but still loud enough for me as well as others around you to hear; you're gonna get looks of all varieties...

Learned to lock my phone from her for now on and changed it to a less attention grabbing tune.

edit: to those interested in hearing what those tracks sound like, pm me for them, yes even the "surprise" SHE surprised me with if you want...

The cheap cellphone I got in Japan was perfect, since you could program in your own ringtones--polyphonic with multiple instruments (so near MIDI quality) as well.

After a few months, I had programmed in:
Tetris: A & B themes
Super Mario Bros. 1-1 (overworld), 1-2 (underground), & 1-3 (underwater)
Super Mario Bros. Starman
Legend of Zelda 2 Temple theme

and several others I don't remember anymore... Not to mention a few sound effects, like a Mario 1UP, Mario dying, Legend of Zelda whistle, etc.

The Legend of Zelda whistle was also the sound effect for whenever I got an email. It attracted a bit of attention when it went off once in class (forgot to put it on silent), mostly because everyone around me recognized the sound.

I also found one other person who, coincidentally, had programmed in nearly all the same songs I did into her phone. KF

I'd say the likelihood of that being a spam post is somewhere close to 99.9%. But indeed, the topic is still relevant.

Recently, thanks to q-pa, I found out that cellphones which supposedly "can't" use custom ringtones are really just hiding their true capabilities. All my phone needed was some custom software (BitPim) and a USB data connector.

In the meantime, I have discovered speakers do actually exist that sound even worse than that of laptops. Hello, cellphone ringtone speakers! I've learned that metal sounds absolutely horrible through them, while old-school video game chiptunes seem to come through the clearest. How convenient for our quaint little musical niche! :-)

Noticing that most ringtones seem to be rather frantic in pace, I tried to make mine a little more chill. No scrambling for the phone here... just a slick smooth unsheathing from the pocket... or at least that's the idea... barring the inevitable awkward execution. :-p Here's a partial listing:

Chrono Trigger - The Day the World Revived (main tone)
Final Fantasy 3j - Chocobo (truly, nothing can best the Chocobo theme played by NES synths)
Final Fantasy 1 - Prelude
Final Fantasy 4 - The Big Whale
Final Fantasy 6 - Edgar & Sabin (those who've met me ought to realize who this tone rings for)
Star Fox - Controls
TMNT4: Turtles in Time - Alleycat Blues
Mega Man 9 - Thunder Tornado
NiGHTS - Paternal Horn
Xenogears - Gathering Stars in the Night Sky
LotR: The Two Towers - Theme of Rohan
Battlestar Galactica - Reuniting the Fleet
Star Trek Insurrection - Ba'ku Village

I had a Codec ring FOREVER

and just recently I decided to change it to a clip of the battle music from Shadow of the Colossus.

I also used the "spotted" sound effect from Metal Gear whenever I would get voicemails, and if I was ever around anyone and the sound went off I would immediately say "Whose footprints are these?" or "Who's that?!"

I'm using a midi version of the SMB3 Iced Land (world 6) theme for some time now.

In the meantime, I have discovered speakers do actually exist that sound even worse than that of laptops. Hello, cellphone ringtone speakers!
This is precisely why I don't generally have songs as my ringtone. (That, and because I don't want to have inappropriate music start randomly playing while I'm in the middle of something; generic rings are by far the least offensive as far as that goes.) HOWEVER! I'm totally stealing the MGS Codec sound and the "!" noise as ringtone idea. Now I just need a third one along that vein and I can cover phone calls, voicemail, and text messages... Did the "?" have a unique sound effect to go with it....?

After I figure out how to put custom tones on my phone for at least the third or fourth time, anyway.

Edit -- Since I noticed it wasn't linked anywhere in this thread, I present to you: "!" (http://www.sub.wz.cz/downloads/sounds/alert.mp3) It's not my host, so try not to break it or anything, because then I'd feel bad.

You'd think that I'd be using this as a ringtone. Surprisingly, I'm not D:

I've got kind of a girly ringtone right now...Jason Mraz, I'm Yours.
My text message alert however is awesome. It's Yoshi going "Brrrring HA! Yoshi!" It's pretty great.

yeah, I got an uninspired ring tone at the moment but I really like the idea of SM3 Iced World thanks to someone else on this thread. (good idea!)

BUT I do have Navi yell out "Hey! LISTEN!" whenever I get a text.

I hope you don't get texts around other people very often or else someone is going to murder you in your sleep for that. Though, now that I think about it, Tatl's little ringing sound effect from Majora's Mask would make a decent ringtone... Zelda's actually got a lot of random sound effects (they've got different ones for opening a chest, opening an IMPORTANT chest, getting a rupee, getting a piece of heart, getting a heart container, etc etc etc, and most of them end up on the soundtrack for the game, too!) that would make good ringtones for things like text messages or voice mail. Not so much for phone calls, though...

NEW TOPIC! What's the worst gaming-related ringtone you've ever heard?

A friend of mine has Kefka's laugh as his ringtone. At first it's startling, but that quickly fades to irritating. He's had it for years. I don't know how he stands it...

You guys suck, I've had so many ideas for custom text message sounds but my phone doesn't allow for them, I can only select between a few preset sounds.

Are you sure? I also thought my phone was incapable of using custom-made sounds & tones until I found (unofficial) software like BitPim that could load said files right onto my phone, without restrictions.

I believe ringtones shouldn't be music you enjoy. See, you learn to hate the songs you once loved after a while. It is my policy to use a song/sound that you don't like.

So this is my ringtone. (http://nny.icynipple.net/dialup.mp3)

This is my text ring tone. (http://nny.icynipple.net/oot-navihey.mp3)

if I had a phone capable customizable ringtones more sophiticated than a series of beeps, my ringtone would be a recording of someone coughing

I once heard someone's cell phone go off with the Power Rangers jingle, the same kind the rangers had in their comm. devices Zordon game them. A few chuckles emerged (it was in a computer lab) and I was one of the few that tried to keep from chuckling.

Recently got a new phone. Staying with the text message Yoshi, but Cerrax was awesome enough to make me a ringtone from Dr. Horrible, using the ringtone that Dr. Horrible has on his phone with the Bad Horse song. It's kind of awesome.

Ohh cool, thanks for the heads up. I just ordered a data cable off Amazon for my phone so hopefully I can use this software to my advantage.
