View Full Version : Freeware VI: Wrath of Revenge

Much like the last Nice Work thread, the previous Freeware thread got the axe only a short week after being made. But, since Off Topic is here, it's time to avenge the premature death of "Freeware V", and continue. So let's get back to sharing those great freeware games and programs...
The Ur-Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/)
This little game, is basically Star Control II. Toys for Bob, who made SC II, released the source code for the 3DO version of the game, and a group of fans began working on porting it to the PC, since the PC versions' code had been lost. Right now, the game is basically complete. All the graphics, voice, music, sound effects and gameplay are intact. It's also huge at 300MB. But trust me, it's worth it. These guys did a great job of bringing an old classic back to life again.
Doom Absolution (http://www.doom2.net/~doomdepot/abs-download.html)
This is a total conversion for Doom II. Basically, it's Doom 64 for the PC. These guys did one hell of a job bringing it over, right down to the last secret. The graphics, the sounds, the music, it's all right on the money. You do need to own the full version of Doom II to play it though (you need the WAD file).
Castlevania Quest (http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f2993.html) and Dracula's Shadow (http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f2994.html)
These are two homebrewed Castlevania games by Archimedes & Soleiyu. I kid you not when I say these games look and play like they were taken from some forgotten vault of Konami games. The graphics are straight out of the NES, and the gameplay is too. The music is actually a bit better than what the NES could do (some samples that were used are beyond the NES' capabilities), and each game is put together very professionally. If you loved the NES games, you need to get these.
Typhoon 2001 (http://typhoon.kuto.de/download.html)
Remember Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar? Here's a "remake" of it, though the intent is to simply recapture what made that Jaguar game so fun. The trippy graphics and such all seem to be intact thus far, and thankfully, the author upped the difficulty over previous releases. So go grab it, and see what the handful of Jaguar owners got to enjoy.

first time going through knytt is definitely a challenge, but once you figure out where everything is (or if you find the few hidden areas), its actually fairly quick. what i love about the game, though, is nifflas' music and atmosphere engine, he definitely poured alot of himself into it. (also he's a really cool guy to talk to!) i'm looking forward to his next game :)

Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/)
Microsoft Word costs a nice chunk of change to use, doesn't it? That's a lot of cash to fork out to be able to type up your paper for college, or whatever else you'd do. But there's hope. Open Office is a freeware program that gives you many features... too many to try and list. But if you need a free, "fully-featured office suite", here ya go. It's quite good.
It's available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Solaris, and a few others OSes. Be warned though, it's pretty big at 93MB to 121MB (depending on the one you need).
The Elder Scrolls: Arena (http://www.theelderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm)
Here's a nifty bit of old gaming. Bethesda made their old DOS game freely available on their website. Since it's a DOS game, running it on modern systems it pretty tough. So unless you have an old version of DOS on your PC, you'll need this next bit of freeware...
DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1)
So, how many remember those classic PC games of old? Wing Commander, Doom, the many Dungeons & Dragons games... stuff that not all got to play, but a good number may remember. Well, here's a chance to play them again.
DOSBox is a DOS emulator. By that I mean, it creates a DOS environment for running older programs that require a DOS environment. It's a quite good, and depending on your PC, can run some of the more demanding DOS games well.
For a little help on how to get DOSBox set up, head over here (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4911) for a guide I put together.

Umm...HOTU (www.the-underdogs.info) has TONS of abandonware/freeware archived on their site.
I guess so far my favorite is a more recent title.
Sanitarium. It's there, so are tons of other gems, you guys should check it if you didn't already know about it.

140 MB for me, but it beats having to buy another copy of MS Office for me (I'm on a Macbook now).

Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx)
Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded. If you want more info on a process it will open up a Google inquiry on it. It also works a lot better than CTRL+ALT+DELETE at closing programs.
For moar gool utilities check out the Windows Sysinternals main page. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx)

Hrm...well, here is what comes to mind.
First off, there is the Battle for Wesnoth, which just recently got updated to version v1.2.1. Judging from the screenshots, it is an turn-based strategy game in a fantasy anime setting. Might be worth checking out some time.
http://www.wesnoth.org/
Now for a game I have played and enjoyed: The New Satan Sam, which is a 2D platformer game. Developed by the guy who made Titan Omega Revelations, which is an fairly good side-scrolling Shoot'em up. All in all, both games play quite nicely and feel fairly professional when everything is considered. With time, the developer of those games might make the next Cave Story someday, I hope.
http://satansam.co.uk/games.htm
Next up is an roguelike game that is in development, Gearhead 2. Based upon the premise of being basically a mecha oriented anime roguelike, the Gearhead series of games are fairly decent. However, the second iteration is still far from being completed, but it seems to hold much potential for making the gameplay better when compared to the original Gearhead.
http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.html
Moving on, it is the Doomsday engine, which is apparantly an engine that expands upon the features and engines of Doom, Heretic, and Hexen. I am not sure how good this remade engine is, though it seems promising.

clickbeat.... or is it beatclick?! tracker musicians aymes and surasshu have been working on this for a while (i just found out about it a week ago). someone on the forums already mentioned ocremixes!
http://www.thephorse.net/beatclick
basically its a beaty clicky game you only need a mouse with a left click for, circles will pop up with a target spinning, once it levels out you click on the circle! the scripting is fairly simple, but tedious enough. i think its fun, but we should get more scripts from the communities around!

T2002 (http://www.pekaro.de/)
How many remember the Turrican series? Better still, how many remember playing them on an actual Amiga? Well, here's your chance to relive a little bit of that. T2002 is, in essence, a remake of Turrican II. Using graphics and music straight from the Amiga and PC versions (with permission too), this game basically makes Turrican II playable on today's computers. What little I remember of the second Turrican game, this game seems like a very faithful recreation. It also features a few tweaks here and there.
Very good stuff.

Engage in Jabberwock (http://www20.cds.ne.jp/~murasame/games/jabberwock.htm)
Here's a funky little game that just went freeware by its author. Imagine "Zelda", a shmup, a little RPGing, and a large breasted character to use these traits in a series of battles, and you're getting an understanding of this little game. You work your way through various dungeons, battling various types of pumpkin-like enemies, and other assorted mechanical beasts, and you try and work your way to the boss. Along the way, you get health, some items to use, and different attacks as well. There are also very simple puzzles to be solved to get further into each area (basically, big spheres to shoot and flip over).
There's not a lot of reading, so that's not an issue. The game's mostly action with its blasting and dodging, so there's little Japanese to worry about. It's gotten some good feedback over the years, so you just may have some fun with it.

Stargem already mentioned it, but I have to reiterate:
Battle for Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org/)
Available for Mac, Windows and Linux, Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game somewhat like Fire Emblem meets Ogre Battle meets Warsong. It's easy to learn, but is challenging and doesn't baby you like most commercial games do these days.
Additionally, it's open-source under the GPL and has an easy to learn but powerful scripting language for building your own scenarios. Due to those two points, the amount of quality mod content is staggering.
I've been playing it since 2004 and it just keeps getting better. I can't recommend it enough!

There is another game I found that I think everyone who likes Zelda and Symphony of the Night should play. La-Mulana is basically set in the ruins of an ancient civilization, which is of course filled with death traps and puzzles. It does this very well and has distinct graphical style. The music is good in my opinion, and fortunately for American audiences there is an English patch for the game. However, I recommend playing with an gamepad, and an keyboard is required. Be sure to read the manual.
Below are screenshots of the game, plus links.

Giving this a bump after nearly a month.
Battle Chess (http://www.download-game.com/Battle_Chess.htm)
Now now, I know what some of you are thinking... "HEY! THAT'S STILL COPYRIGHTED!"
Well, yes and no. The Windows version which everyone is more familiar with is still illegal to download. But this here DOS version isn't. Why? Because Interplay released it as freeware. Yes, it's the original version. It's not as colorful as the Windows version, and it doesn't have as many sound effects. But it is still the chess game where the pieces fight, the animations are still intact, and while the walking noises are gone, the battle effects are all still there.
So if you wanna play a game of chess that's a little different, and you haven't taken on a "Fewer colors?! BLEH!" mentality, give it whirl.
Note- You'll either need DOSBox to run it, or the program VDMSound. Just hit "Enter" three times after you start the game, and then hold down the right mouse button to be able to change the difficulty settings and whatnot.

Betrayal At Krondor (http://www.alt-tab.net/games/betrayal-at-krondor/download/)
Back in 1993, when D&D games appeared frequently on the old IBM computers, this game was released. A number of years later, Sierra On-Line, Inc. released the game was freeware to promote its sequel. Despite the praise for it, it kind of got buried and forgotten by the consumers back in the day. But, I figured I'd dig it up for this thread. So if you still like those old school D&D games, and feel like playing one that's got a lot to offer, here ya go.

Handheld Remakes (http://handheld.remakes.org/)
Now now, before you get all excited thinking about GameBoy remakes or anything of the sort, this is stuff that predates the old gray brick. These are handheld remakes that go further back... like, Nintendo Game and Watch back.
All the remakes in here are ones of the old LCD screen type, where all the images were pre-drawn and "lit up" when they needed to be shown. The game play was simple, the graphics were funky, and the sound basic bleeps and bloops. But boy were these things fun. My personal favorite, is the Dungeons and Dragons handheld, which I still own to this day (and yes, it still works ).
So if you'd like to see what school kids (and some adults) were playing in the late 70s and early 80s, hop on over and give them a whirl. If you're old enough, it may just bring back some memories.

It is pretty fun! I'm addicted to it. I can see where -eventually- it would get dull, seeing as how the storyline is minimal if humorous. I haven't reached that point yet, though, and it's great for casual players. And the full member's version being like $4.99/mo makes it affordable enough to just play sometimes (I find myself wanting to cram in gametime with other MMOs, just to get my moneys' worth!)
You don't need to shell out the cash to play it though, it's playable for free. The best items are accessible to full members only, but you'll probably be bored of it before you ever really need the best items :)
Alien Shooter was fuckin' PISSING me off. It's fun, mind you. It's just that the lack of accuracy and the no-clip on the grenades and rockets made every shot too much of a hit-or-miss scenario for the amounts of enemies I had to kill!

Hurrican (http://www.hurrican-game.de/)
Remember the "Turrican" series for the C64, Amiga, Genesis and SNES (among others)? Well, here's a new remake/inspired game that uses that series as a base. It's taken a good few years for this game to be made, and looking at the graphics, you'll see way. A lot of time was put into this game, to update the tunes and graphics, while keeping that familiar gameplay style... and it shows. The graphics are "Euro style", the music is good, the controls are on the money, and there are all sorts of familiar faces to be seen and blowed up real good.
It's quite well done, and worth the 40MB download to play it.

Blazing Wings (http://thefantasycorner.perso.cegetel.net/blazing_wings/telechargement.htm)
Here's a quicky bump. This is a remake of an Amiga shmup called Wings of Death. The graphics and remakes of the music still have an Amiga feel to them, and with four different beasts to change into, it's got some gameplay to it. It's not going to change your life with it's presence, but it's worth a play or two... if for no other reason, to hear the Engrish version of "Energy"... which sounds remarkably like "Kenny G.".
Note: To have music, you'll need to download the remixes on that page. After you've extracted the game, create a folder called "Musics" inside the game's folder, and put the tunes in there.

Very cool free MMORPG. Well made. Certain skills aren't implemented (About two or three out of 51). Good community, so you get pretty much instant help with the /h help channel.
They have a general server (phoenix), a roleplaying server (fireopals) and a completely PvP server (halberd).
There's a cool language feature. You can set the language to speak in, and your words come out translated to that language, except to people who have a sufficient level in it. You start off fluent in two languages depending on your race. One is always Praxic (English).
Anyway, it's just generally cool. You have day, night, weather, seasons and all that stuff, and there are big monsters to kill of course. And the three staple classes are there too; ranger, mage and warrior. Four if you count non-combat.

Mogura 2 (http://www.vector.co.jp/download/file/win95/game/fh403117.html)
Feel like something a little different for your shmuping needs? well, give this game a try. Filled with bizarre creatures, this game may be odd, but it's simple and fun. The graphics are 2D sprites, with gameplay that involves a fire button (z), a shield button (x) and a mega shot (c). You collect strawberries to build up your mega shot reserves, watermelons to odd options ala Gradius, and grapes to up your shot power. Your "ship" looks like a freakish cross between a fish and a mole, and the enemies range from birds, to huge headed... things.
The music's a bit repetitive, but it's not bad, and the graphics, though pixelated, are stylish. The controls and hitbox size are good, and the while the first stage is a breeze, the challenge grows as you get further in. I'm not sure how many levels there are total, but I know there's at least four. You also get a choice of "ship" types that offer different firing options.
So give it a whirl. It's odd, but fun.
Note: The game doesn't make running it easy. To do so, follow these instructions...
- Once you unzip the game, go into the folder, and rename the largest executable file "mogura2.exe", and the largest cca file to "mogura2.cca".
- Rename the smaller executable file to "config.exe", and the smaller cca file to "config.cca".
- Right click on the two executables, select "Properties", and put them under "Windows 95" compatibility mode.
It should run just fine on Windows XP then.

Time for a bump...
Steel Panthers: World At War! (http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/sp_waw.htm)
Up for a little WWII turn-based strategy gaming? Well, this should keep you busy. It seems to be a remake of the first game in the series, using the Steel Panthers III graphics engine. It was made by Matrix Games, who owned the code to the series for a while. It's a big download at 425MB, but it's worth it if you enjoyed the original DOS games. Be sure to grab the patches that were released for it.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Steel Panthers: Main Battle Tank (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/SPCamo/wSPMBT/6.htm)
There's another game for the series, which has battles that take place between 1945 and 2000. With 90 nations in it, there's plenty to play with.
Note: Be sure that once you've downloaded the 100MB main game, install all four patches in their proper order. It's been said that it's important to do this, so don't skip any patches.
Steel Panthers: World War II (http://shrapnelgames.com/SPCamo/wSPWW2/6.htm)
Basically, this is pretty much all of WWII. A huge amount of scenarios, 500+ new and revised vehicles... it's gonna take you a while to get through this one.
Note: As before, make sure you download and install all the patches in their proper order.
From some of the things I've read, it sounded like "WWII" might have been a major upgrade to "MBT". I'm not sure though, so in case they are two completely different games, I listed them both.

After a long hiatus, Freeware's back!
Anyway, up for a little stunt driving? How about a touch of racing in the stunt driving? How about having some really nice graphics added on top of that, and having a rather option-filled track editor that allows you to build your own freakish tracks? Well, here ya go. This game was given out a freeware last year, and it really is like a strange cross between San Fransisco Rush 2049, and Race Drivin'. Lots of jumps, loops, zig-zaggy turns, and a ghost racer after each lap. You can even upload your scores, and race against others on-line.
This is a really well done game, that only suffers from having no single player race outside of the 100 solo stunt tracks (and whatever you make yourself). Don't forget to grab the update for it.

A bump from the grave with a ported classic...
Another World (http://www.foxysofts.com/index.php?l=content/gba/anworld.inc)
More commonly known as Out of this World in the US, this is a GBA port of that classic DOS/Amiga game. It's very faithful, plays well, and despite being in a lower resolution due to the GBA's screen, it still looks a lot like the original. Even the sounds are still there with the cinemas. And, if you have one of those GBA flash carts, you can even load the game into your GBA for play on the go.
And before anyone panics, this version of the game is indeed freeware. Not only that, but the person who made this port worked with Erich Chahi (the original game's creator) to make this port happen.
So grab Visual Boy Advance (or load up your flash carts), and play a PC classic from 1991.

XOP (http://rydia.net/udder/prog/xop/)
So what is XOP? It's a shmup that used to be sold, but the author decided that it was a failure as shareware. So, he made it freeware. The graphics are bright and colorful, there's little flicker or slowdown, and it has a strange mixture of old DOS and Amiga Euroshmup influences in background and ship designs/colorings. Plenty of stages, several modes, and lots of options to tinker with. It's not a bad game at all, and despite how it looks, it was indeed made for new PCs, so it runs in XP without any problems. Oh, and it's got plenty of bullets and enemies to dodge, as it has a few roots in the Manic shmup world too.

Alcohol 52% Free Edition (http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition)
That's just how it sounds. I'm sure a lot of people here are familiar with Alcohol 120%, and all the things you can do with that. Well, Alcohol 52% is a virtual drive application made by the same company. However, this is the free version. It allows you to make 6 virtual drives, has no trial period, and it also lets you make copies of your CDs and DVDs to be used in the virtual CD/DVD drives it creates. Needless to say, this is quite handy, as Alcohol has a reputation for being a good CD copier.
Sure, some folks use Alcohol 120% to pirate their stuff, but for those of us who like to back up our hard to find/replace discs so the originals don't get scuffed and scratched, this program is good to have around. And with this free version, it's finally able to be gotten for those of us who are regularly broke.

Battleships Forever (http://www.wyrdysm.com/games.php)
Top-down view real-time strategy game where the player controls ships of various sizes and armaments to battle through single player and custom game maps. The style kind of reminds me of the battle system from the Master of Orion games, but in real time. You can also create custom ships and missions and share with others. There are quite a few fan created missions and ships available for download in the site's forums.
The complete game isn't available yet as it's currently being remade with a new engine to allow for multiplayer and other features. The single player missions are pretty fun, though, unfortunately, the storyline isn't yet complete.

Area 51 (http://www.gamershell.com/news_61608.html)
Full Spectrum Warrior (http://www.gamershell.com/news_61602.html)
All of these games are ad supported (by the Air Force, which fits for the last two), but they're free. Ubisoft isn't involved with this, so hopefully they won't abruptly yank them.
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (http://www.fileplanet.com/187537/180000/fileinfo/Psi-Ops:-The-Mindgate-Conspiracy-(Free-Game))
Another ad supported game that was released a few months back.
Keep in mind, the above four games range from a bit over 1GB, to 2.5GB in size.
Overkill (http://www.gamershell.com/download_33254.shtml)
Iron Seed (http://www.gamershell.com/download_33256.shtml)
Some older DOS games that got released as freeware recently.

This is where I go for freeware games. The software to make the games found here are done with the program "Game Maker" simply enough. I enjoy using it anyways.
Area 51 (http://www.gamershell.com/news_61608.html)
Not the old-school light-gun Atari game?
I don't care...

Alright, don't know if this has been posted already, but I found this awesome game that feels like a good old platformer. It's called:
Bonesaw (http://www.kylepulver.com/view.php?id=12)
It's a pretty sweet game about a hockey team. It's worth a try, I just can't get past this extra level he has where you go though it to get a power up.
I'm enjoying this, but I do have one gripe. I hate how you have to be standing in front of your enemies to hit them. It's too easy to run up and kick them and then land inside them and you can't hit them from there, and it's a pain in the ass to reposition yourself.

That's what she said.
Sorry. I tried to stop myself.

Caiman (http://www.caiman.us/)
Right there, is a website full of free homebrew games, both original and remake. It also has a few older PC games that became freeware. It covers pretty much every genre, and it has screenshots of the games. It'll take you a while to dig through everything, but surely you'll find something to tickle your fancy (like Vampire Blaze, which is a rather nice Castlevania clone with a very good soundtrack).

For Coop,
Fraxy (http://mokeron.hp.infoseek.co.jp/zg/fraxy_main.html)
It's like Warning Forever except for there's a ton of different bosses that come with it, and you can create your own and share them. Really nice gameplay. You'll want to grab
fraxy_20081118e.zip (1.66MB) (English only)
Pretty small file size too.

I'm liking most of Coops picks, good taste have ye.
Just picked up nethack a little while ago, haven't tried it out a whole lot yet, but it looks fun and seems to have a lot of depth (randomly generated levels)
plus, it's ancient so it must be good, ASCII for the win!

Something similar to NetHack but with (very) slightly more elegant graphics, a smoother spell system, and a (very) slightly more forgiving difficulty was Castle of the Winds, one of the shareware Windows 3.1 greats.
It's available here (http://www.exmsft.com/~ricks/) and if you're interested in old RPG's, it's definitely worth your time. Take either Magic Arrow or Heal as your first spell if you want it easy.

Yes, Nethack is good, although I prefer Dungeon Crawl for my randomly generated Rogue-likes. And I'm a heretic who uses to tileset rather than the ASCII version. Surprised this game isn't on this list yet, as it's one of the best. Gotten many MANY hours of gameplay out of DC.

I WANNA BE THE GUY (http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/)
Takes you back through the previous generation's era-styled graphics and references (I.E. you have to fight a green Zangief that shoots Hadoukens out of its mouth and blankas out of its crotch). It's also hellishly hard. So hard, in fact, that there is no easy mode (medium is the hardest mode). Arrow keys move, left shift jumps (and double-jumps), and Z shoots. Do you have what it takes to be The Guy?
Unlocker (http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/)
Ever have those stupid error messages when trying to remove an external USB hard drive or moving/deleting a file that says it's being accessed (even when you know its not)? Use this and you can remove the leftover handles and you can easily move/delete the media.

Unofficial Salamander 3 (http://www.gamestone.co.uk/gradius/forumvb/showthread.php?t=1983)
For those not familiar with the first two Salamander games, you might know the first one by its US name, LifeForce. As the name suggests, this is an unofficial sequel. Like the games before it, US3 alternates between side view, and top view stages. It's currently at version 1.05, with 1.1 being readied for release. It's pretty good game, but it's not quite as well put together as the official Konami games. Still, it's worth a download, and with 15 stages, it'll keep you busy.
Note: It takes the game a while to start up when you double click the executable (about three minutes, fifteen seconds). I have no idea why, but it does.

Monster World RPG (http://maxteam01.blogspot.com/)
Based off of the Wonder Boy/Monster World games, this RPG sets out to capture the feel of those classic games, while giving it a bit more of a... well, RPG flavor. I've not played all the way through it, but it's not bad. And with a fresh patch recently released, it's still being supported.
Oh, and bump.

Betrayal At Krondor (http://www.alt-tab.net/games/betrayal-at-krondor/download/)
Wowzers, that one brings back memories. As an aside for anyone interested in this one, its actually based off of the fantasy Sagas of Raymond E. Feist (particularly the Riftwar Saga). If that name still doesn't ring a bell, then take note that this is the author that Christopher Paolinni took most of his inspiration from when writing the Inheritance Saga (although I think Feist does better.)
Ahem, on topic, I've gotta recommand Transcendence (http://neurohack.com/downloads/Trans099c.zip). Its a rogue-like/space exploration/combat/trade game, kinda in the style of games like Elite (let's call it Elite Lite). I mostly got into it after playing titles like Escape Velocity and the like and its actually a lot of fun and the GUI is a little more user friendly than other rogue-like titles.
Worth a shot, I'd say

http://www.revouninstaller.com/ - revo uninstaller is basically an advanced uninstaller that cleans up the mess left behind by poorly written uninstaller programs. it'll check your registry and file system for bits left over, and it has a bunch of other features for tracking down and eliminating spyware as well.
http://aren.hulubulu.net/ - advanced renamer is the best free batch renaming program available. period. i used this extensively with a project a little while ago that involved over 1400 mp3 files, and it make my life SO much easier. the best part is the undo functionality, which will allow you to undo anything you've done since the program was opened last.
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ mp3tag is the best free batch retagging program available. sensing a theme? i used it with the above project, and it is very powerful. supports tagging on everything, too, from common files like mp3 and wma to weird stuff like ape, optimfrog, and wavpack.
http://www.cutepdf.com/ cutepdf saved my butt in college more than once. it allows you to print to a pdf file, which is great for when you go to submit papers or need to print somewhere where they might not have office 2007 or whatever program you use. i'm sure most people have discovered something like this, but it works really well for proofing your papers before printing them.
what about you all? got any cool and useful programs that someone might want to try out?

Bulk Rename Utility (http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php) , this program does exactly what its name says, and is very handy when you need to rename a number of files, such as images, or (more likely to this site's users) songs in a specific format. Add prefixes, suffixes, remove certain characters, do numbering, it does it all!
It takes a little getting used to, and the UI is pretty much "advanced mode" from the get-go, but it's an awesome time saver and I've really saved a lot of time with it, highly recommended.
I was going to mention Mp3tag as well, excellent program, but prophet beat me to it.
Edit: Just noticed prophet mentioned Advanced Renamer too, I don't know how it compares to BRU but I noticed it seems to have ID3 support which means its probably better for music, may have to check this out for myself.

Amazing thread. HOWEVER, you guys are missing one of the biggest freeware games out there.
UFO2000 (http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/)
It's X-com. It's multiplayer (LAN/internet support). it's fucking X-com. It's legally free.
Did I mention it's X-com? It's preferable to get this with the original game & TotD on your computer (since it rips the graphics for them if you have it), but it can run on it's own, as well. No mind control, though.
Here's another freeware game that's based off of X-com, and it looks pretty good. I've never been able to play it, since my stupid comp won't take it out of windowed mode and you need fullscreen so you can scroll the maps with the mouse. Meh.

Bumping this thread because this seems to belong here.
I just dicovered a new free game named Hero Core (http://www.remar.se/daniel/herocore.php) (trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu_xdCHdSqg)) and played a bit of it. It's kind of a mix of Metroidvania and oldschool bullet hell shmups. So far I like it! It has this weird retro feel to it, even though it doesn't really look like a game from any specific old console. Apparently it was released yesterday.

Genetos (http://www.tatsuya-koyama.com/software/wg002_genetos_eng.html)
A little freeware shmup. In essence, you battle your way through the various eras of the shmup world, starting at Space Invaders and going up to... well, you'll see if you get to the end. It's pretty quick (about 15-20 minutes), but it's very creative and fun.

Night Slashers X (http://megaupload.com/?d=K83E62RX)
Back in 1993, Data East released Night Slashers in the arcades. It was basically a Final Fight/Streets of Rage beat'em up, but with a twist. You chose one of three characters, and beat the shit out of zombies, some werewolves and such. Well, BonusJZ (http://lavalit.com:8080/index.php?topic=2841.0) decided to do a port of sorts with OpenBoR.
More gore, tweaked gameplay, extra animations... all sorts of extra touches to beef the game up. It's a well done conversion, and one not to miss out on if you're a zombie fan.
Note: As it loads, it'll stop about halfway along. Let it sit, and it'll finish loading in another minute or so.

About time this thread got bumped? Here's a brilliant, compact 2-4 deathmatch game, in a 90s retro/arcade style: Toxic Takedown. (http://gamejolt.com/games/action/toxic-takedown/13776/)
It's a simple run-and-shoot kind of an affair, but the controls are tight, the (only) level is well designed and the point-collecting system has a nice twist. You don't get a point just by killing your opponent, you need to catch a bouncing star the death spawns. I often fall into acid while trying (and the other guy collects their own star). You do need a friend at hand to play on the same computer, but then again that's about the best kind of gaming.
