I was sitting in my Analysis II class the other day. Now, my professor runs the course in more of a open discussion fashion than a lecture. This is odd for a math course, but it arguably is better for the students in the class to learn how to answer questions on their own, rather than being told how to do everything.

In any case, our classes often run like this: someone tries to prove an open theorem in the class and the professor will try and find fault with it, even if it is correct. It's up to the presenter, or someone else in the class to defend the proof.

So yeah. I've been playing a bit of Phoenix Wright recently... Two days ago, I was in class, watching someone give their proof on the board. It wasn't a very polished thing, but it was essentially correct. But of course our professor was playing devil's advocate, and tried to convince us that the proof was unsound by an example. This example, of course, contained a contradiction.

!!!

I slammed my hands on the table, and nearly yelled this (http://objection.mrdictionary.net/frame_objection.php?n=1674590).

...

Of course, after a short moment of awkward silence, I apologized for "accidentally" hitting my desk so hard, and pointed out the flaw in his reasoning.

So yeah. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else had a similar situation, where you were playing a video game for a while, and you accidentally reacted to real life as you would have in the game. Partly because I'd feel better about myself, as a person, but also because I'd bet there are some funny stories out there.

I think videogames (and the internet, perhaps to a greater extent) have had more of an effect on us than most of us realise, or would like to think.
I've been hearing alot of non-gamers use the word 'own/pwn' recently, and it really annoys me. An obvious hyperbole, but Pure Pwnage is another example of how language has developed and is used as a result of games. (Yes, my friends and I often use alot of gaming language in everyday conversation; sometimes seriously, other times to take the piss out of it)
Also, we go to LazerZone (Dunno if you've got that elsewhere in the world; lazertag/light gun kinda version of paintball) and treat it alot like an FPS.
Chances are there are other examples I'm not aware of..

Years ago when I was playing a lot of AoE/AoK (like 98 or 99), I kept accidently *almost* saying "elohel" instead of chuckling when something was humorous but not really enough to laugh. Now I do it just to annoy people.

Not to a great extent, but I almost said "LOL" in response to a joke. Thankfully, nobody noticed, but I would have had quite the time explaining that one (back in '99, before Chatspeak was popular).

Someone else I know uses FTW and Pwned. As far as actual video games, though, I have yet to see or hear anything that's a direct reference.

I tried to press triangle to steal vehicles in non-GTA games. Even on systems without triangle. Not the same thing, but still.

I think I once tried to hit R to drift (like Mario Kart) while actually driving.

The Vampire Killer whip may be able to defeat Dracula, but a leather belt used as a whip only defeats my own sense of dignity.

Wii Sports made me realize that I cannot actually bowl. Two totally different things. Which I should have known, seeing as how my Dad owns a bowling alley.

I second this with a vengeance. I went bowling with some friends last week, thinking that I do alright in Wii Bowling and I should have no problem at least keeping a respectable score, breaking 100 easily. Oh god, I was wrong. So very wrong.

Personally, it really annoys me when people use web jargon in real life. There is this one guy that is just soooo obnoxious. He thinks he is real funny saying thingls like "lawl, or raw-ful" all the time. Today the little wang says "Wow!" when he overheard some of my friends talking about a crazy thing that happened. Then he quickly said "World of Warcraft!" in the same tone. It made me wanna just smack him. But yeah, maybe it's his fault i have such low tolerance for the use of game lango in reality.

I'm not gonna lie; when Phoenix Wright first came out, I was so into it that I found a rip of the Overtaken! theme and put it on my phone. Whenever anyone would say something contradictory, I would pull out my phone, play the song, and start the courtroom drama.

Needless to say, I got some weird looks, but it was totally worth it.

I like this thread :D

I study taekwondo, and before a sparring match starts I often joke around and do some poses from Street Fighter characters and/or yell stuff like "hadoken!" and "shoryuken!" (while doing those moves) to uhm...intimidate my opponents.

Unsurprisingly, I get my ass kicked most of the time.

I remember a couple of iterations of this thread back, someone was talking about how they used to play Tribes (can't remember which one, maybe the first) religiously. The story went something like this:

In Tribes, when people died, they dropped medpacks. Obviously, these were sought after prizes, so if the other team was smart, if they came across a body with full health (they didn't need the medpack themselves), they'd lay a mine under it. So, the response by the other team was usually to shoot any corpses with the spinfuser before looting them. Okay, enough backstory.

Basically, the guy was driving down the highway, when he notices a dead cat in the road... before he knew what was happening, he had turned on his windshield wipers trying to find the "switch weapon" key.

Yeah, yeah, I've done silly things like thinking I could do dangerous things in real life if I saved beforehand, yada yada.

I almost got in an accident once trying to find the button to pause so I could look at a map. Yeah...

I also regularly use "pwn" and "n00b" with my friends (as a joke).

What's even worse, though, is something that has nothing to do with video games. I go to an engineering school, so 9 out of 10 people that I know are engineers-to-be. When put in situations with 'normal' people from other schools, it is easy to use terms like "net work", "mean value", and other technical terms to describe everyday things.

One of the worst cases of my inner-computer engineer coming out was when my three housemates and I had a half-hour discussion of what would happen if God 'open-sourced' the universe. That was awesome.

After playing Elite Beat Agents way more than can be considered healthy, I can't hear any of the songs that are in the game without the "Cha-ching!" noise it makes when you complete a section of the song. Also, I tend to motion out the beats to the song in mid air.

What else... My friends and I make general internet jokes all the time, like that the school's internet tubes are clogged. We also tend to mimic Counter Strike animations in random situations, like throwing a flashbang into a room before entering, and crouching and aiming from behind doors. Like others in this thread, we get weird looks, but it's fun doing it.

I was obsessed with Chrono Cross when it first came out. One day during math class, I was thinking about it instead of what was going on around me, and the teacher was calling names to take grades.

When she finally got to my name, instead of saying my grade, I shouted "CHRONO CROSS," earning WTF stares from most of the class... and hyena-like laughter from all my friends.

Every once in a while I hold something i just bought over my head. I do it on purpose, and every once in a while it gets some laughs.

There was also one time, after playing far too much Kingdom Hearts 2, when I was playing with my cat and I kept waiting for the triangle action symbol to appear.

And yeah, I've accidentally done the ctrl-Z ting while drawing too. Then I always wish i had done it in photoshop.

Several years back I was playing a lot of Final Fantasy XI. I always turned the names that float above people's heads off, because I find it obtrusive. So as I walked around cities and other crowded areas, I would be flipping my target around looking at different people's names. One time when driving to work I wanted to target a car in the other lane to see what the driver's name was. Though there was no one around, I was still embarrassed with myself.

My brother and I are the best of friends and both spend a good deal of time online. Our conversations contain many memes, internet lingo, videogame references, and other various inside jokes. It's all in fun and joking around since that's what we do most of the time anyway. I don't believe I've ever used internet lingo in any serious conversations though.

Yeah, more than a few times I have wished for an undo button in real life. I don't play games much anymore. I think that sort of thing happens when you spend all your free time playing games haha

Although many times when I see a guy and girl chatting in the distance, it reminds me of The Sims and building up those positive points between characters. I can almost see the green plus symbols above their heads :) Interesting since I only played Sims for a short time years ago.

To go a little more serious..

One of the real problems about blurring video games and real life, involves the ever increasing level of realism in video games(physics, damage models, weapons, characters..), and what can happen when you suffer a momentary lapse in sane judgment, as seen in this thread.

Ever suffer from deja vu? What if you ended up with a real event that closely resembled something from a video game, triggering a moment of deja vu and resulting in one of those lapses in judgment. What do you think would happen, then?

I had been playing Halo for about five hours or so. It was on legendary and I was having to restart and reload a lot. I went downstairs to get a drink. I accidentally dropped the glass and sat there for about ten seconds. My mom came by and looked at me. She asked me what I was doing and I realized that I was trying to hit the start button with my hands. I then realized that I looked pretty retarded trying to do that with thin air. It had just sort of become instinct at that point.

when me and my friend are playin video games for some reason our wordchoice and syntax all go to crap. this is partially because we think its funny reading the engrish on games like Way of the Samurai I & II, and also partially because we want to focus exclusively on the action on the screen and expend the least possible cognitive effort on our communication. As an example one time when I was playing Way of the Samurai II I went into this one area at night and my friend said "You're bout to get understood by the drunk" And as soon as I walked on the screen I got slashed and killed by a Ronin (who drop the item "sake" when they die, thus making him "the drunk"). I don't know where he got "understood" from but I knew exactly what he meant when he said it. So that's funny, but I usually figured that was just a funny thing me and him did when we played games. Until last week when I was at the store with some other friends and they were comparin two items, which was when I said, "Its the same as much." (referring to the cost).

So sometimes I make basically understandable wierd utterances, and I believe that this has to do with my experience of playing games, based on both content of the games, and also my state of mind when playing the games.

One time I caught myself reaching for my knife when I wanted to run faster.

I don't know if anyone here plays Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy, but sometimes, I'll try to jump to reach something, and if I can't jump high enough, my first reaction is to see if I'm out of force points. I also remember trying to run up a wall one time by running at it and hitting jump twice... that didn't work out so well.

Yikes, I just remembered this thing:

A few years ago I got sick with a pretty bad stomache flu combined with some other nasty illness.
It is my personal tradition to stay at my grandparents' place when I'm sick, because grandparents are uber cute and spoil you loads while you recover.
However, there wasn't much to do, so I just played card games on the PC. (You know, like Solitaire, that sort of thing)

BIG MISTAKE!

I played them for a few hours and when I went to bed that night, I saw cards flying in front of my eyes constantly. Like they do when you win and they just sort of..bounce and multiply untill they fill up the entire screen.
Now here's the kick: these cards would keep flashing before my eyes and they'd form random pairs or sets. And with certain sets, certain muscles in my body would start to hurt extremely much!
When red cards would appear, I'd get like pain in my arms or legs. And other combinations would feel like my stomache was being ripped out.
Guess what happened when all the cards started bouncing like when you win?

...

PAIN ALL OVER! x_x

Pretty nasty that was, as I'm sure you can't imagine...>_<
Falling asleep was hell after that, it would just continue in my dreams.

So listen kids, don't go playing card games on your PC when you're sick...or you could end up even worse...or dead like me >_>

I'm ahamed to admit this, but when I was little (about 7 or 8) I tried to stomp on a turtle and make him come shooting out of his shell. I also kicked another turtle at a wall to see how far he would bounce back, but he didn't bounce very far.

My friends from the military like to do halo-ish and counter strike animations and "raid" buildings. Weird, but fun.

We say pwn and headshot and noob ALL the time, I got an old asian lady saying it, very good.

I also came down with CTRL+Z syndrome, thinking I could just go back and redo something... hah.

I do many street fighter animations with my friends, but that ends up with us pummeling each other on the ground and yelling "BURNING!"

Usually I can get the public to do video game stuff with me, it brings much joy to everyones faces to hear a middle aged African-American waiter to yell "GET SERIOUS!"

You know those plastic Pokeball toys from ten years ago? I threw one at a dog once...

Those were the coolest Kid's Meal toy ever.

I remember the big fuss over getting Pikachus. Not like it was hard to tell if you had one, since the ball they came in was slightly larger than the typical ones.

I'm... I'm assuming you're referring to the Burger King toys, of course.

Who knows. There are still pokeball toys you can buy from Japan. They even have the spring-loaded trap system so you can throw them at stuff and capture it. They even come in the different types of balls, like Super and Master balls. Some versions even had sound chips in them to make the sounds from the anime.

A girl I was interested in decided to cosplay as a pokemon trainer for a convention one year, and I spent a few days trying to find some some good ones for her to use. But then she changed her mind and went with something else.

Never did get anywhere with her... Too bad, she had the body and liked to dress up in outfits. It could have been sooooo good.

A couple emulators that I use have a shift+function number savestate hotkey, which can be used to instantly save or load any of ten positions at any time. Many, many times, after I've spent a while playing a hard emulated game (where I'm frequently reaching for F1 to load my last non-dead position), I've gone on to do something stupid in reality (drop a plate, for instance) and found myself subconciously attempting to load my last savestate. :P

Just a couple days back, I was talking about Rare's licensing with a friend. The point came up that Banjo was removed from Diddy Kong Racing DSand yet Rare after the Microsoft buyout could still release Banjo Pilot for GBA.

When this occurred to me I slammed the table, stood up, pointed my finger, and shouted "OBJECTION!"

Too bad my friend didn't get the reference.

HAHAHAHa that is freakin' sigged. Nice.

As for blurring the line, this has happened to me on more than one occasion. After playing either Need for Speed or Burnout for a while (I can't remember which,) I was driving by our local mall and saw a line of tractor trailers. I considered, in all seriousness, that if I swerved over and plowed into them, I wouldn't do that much damage to my car, and could keep going, back to my house. Then I thought about it for a second, and slapped my forehead strongly.

By far the worst instance of this, though, was while I was playing through Chrono Trigger to get all the endings. Taking a break from the game for a bit, I thought to myself that I should go outside since it was such a nice day. Thinking about what I could do that would be out in the sun, I figured playing in traffic might be fun, but that I would have to save my game beforehand in case I got killed. After a full minute, it occurred to me that you CAN'T SAVE YOUR GAME IN REAL LIFE. That was sketchy.

Other than that, though, I do small things like say "Flawless Victory" and roflcopter on occasion. Meh. English is a mutt of a language anyway.

Who has experienced waking up really early in the morning, going to the bathroom door and standing there for a while because you're trying to press A button to make it open?

Something very similar happened to me.

I was playing Half Life (I'm a compulsive saver, so I quicksaved before going around any corner) for about 12 hours straight and finally stopped to pee at 5:30AM. I get to the bathroom door and stand there for about 5 minutes waiting for the menu to pop up so I could save and it would be safe to open the door. I then realized what I was doing and promptly went to sleep.

Whenever I play Tetris DS Wifi I have to take a 10 minute break after playing. If I close my eyes I immediately start dropping pieces and stacking them up.

Yup. Me too.

Whenever I happen upon a large cushion, pile, or cylindrical thing, I try to see how far I can punch or kick it a la the sandbag of SSBM.

Whenever I have a number of large, solid things (like a book) in a container (like a backpack) my mind goes straight to Tetris as I rearrange everything until it's perfect.

I've tried a HUGE number of times to do a qartercircle-forward and punch to shoot a fireball. I haven't gotten anything yet.

I can't tell you the number of times I've shouted "WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" before crushing a spider with my shoe.

I've often gone charging into rooms and such while my friends are hanging back, proclaiming mightily, "LEEEROOYYYY JENKINS!!!"

I play a LOT of rock paper scissors (RPS, as it shall henceforth be known). I challenge people all the time. And it's ALWAYS best 2 of 3. So when the game starts I declare "Battle.... FOIGHT!" After any round I win, I say "Victoly!" a la SamSho. If someone wins the game without losing one round, I say "Flawless Victory." And if I beat someone's scissors with rock, I make a point to shout, once more, "WRYYYY" before crushing their puny scissors with my mighty rock. Who says 2D fighters are dead ;)

Not to mention all the 1337 I use. pwned, lol, o rly, wtf, ftw, noob (and many variations thereof- it's my choice insult). Hell, I use more 'net slang in real life than I do on the internet.

Reading over this list, and realizing I actually DO all that stuff makes me think: I am one screwed up kid. :)

I know it sounds weird, but after playing Zelda 64 for a while back when it first came out, I was sooo used to turning around with A QUICK, ALMOST NON-EXISTANT turn around animation in the game. So a couple of times in real life I would turn around for whatever reason, and my brain kind of though that I could turn real quick like in the game, and when it went slow I was kind of confused and thought to myself, "Wait... something is different..."

Then I realized.

Around people I like, I sing :)

And on a more serious note: Thief and Thief 2 made me intensely aware of a) how loudly I used to walk and b) how loudly most other people walk. Not only this, but most people are oblivious to the small sounds around them, and so are always freaked out when I seem to know when someone's approaching me.

It's also given me a tendency to walk silently and just wait for people to realise I'm there - given my housemate a near-heart-attack several times in this past week alone.

I suppose if you must draw a parallel, you could say that Father : Power :: Son : Wisdom :: Holy Spirit : Courage. God is omnipotent, Jesus bestowed wisdom on his disciples, and the Holy Spirit gave them courage to go out and spread his Word.

But I wouldn't take this to Bible Study class, considering how Ganon, the force of evil, wields the Triforce of Power. Also, you'll look like a complete dork.

few things that come to mind.

I talk in my sleep I guess. there have been a few times when I've been quoted saying something from/about a game. some what embaressing the next day.

I used to be really into Everquest. There were more then a few times when I thought of money in terms of PP (Platinum Pieces), or going to a friends house and gating back home afterwards.... yeah....

I also used to be die hard into Stepmania. for those of you who dont know, its DDR but with arrow keys on your keyboard. anyway, almost any song I'm really into I'll start tapping to the beat with my fingers like I'm playing SM. I get a lot of funny looks doing that.

my friends and I use the lingo IRL, but mostly to poke fun at eachother. though I have slipped a few times we talking to non gamers. they just tend to stare blankly at me as I try to explain it to them.

The Zelda series has evolved since the first game, but I think the game was initially supposed to be based on Indian culture. For instance, the currency is the Rupee, which is used in India. I think the Goddesses of the Triforce were based off of the Hindu "trinity."

Shiva is like Din, the Goddess of Power (creating the landscape [possibly destroying Hyrule systematically to renew the Hylian race every once and a while]); Brahman is like Farore, the Goddess of Courage (producing people to inhabit Hyrule); Vishnu is similar to Nayru, Goddesses of Wisdom (creating law and order in the universe).

I've never really understood what the Holy Ghost was supposed to be either. It's not talked about too much, aside from prayer.

You can only play so much Resident Evil 4 before you can hear a loud motor and screams coming from someone's backyard without certain irrational conclusions jumping into your mind. True story.

But things I've actually done as a result of video games? Can't say there are any situations that I can think of right now, although playing too much Warcraft 3 (or was it 2?) has, on at least one occasion, made me try to "click" and "order" around "things", I can't even remember what.... yeah. And that "stacking tetris block" thing, that happened to me bigtime with some game, but I can't put my finger on which one it was... might've been killing orcs in LOTR: Return of the King for Gamecube (that game had an addictively strategic score system), or playing Kirby's Ghost Trap. Games always penetrate into my dreams, often in the form of sequels that are combinations of several games - but that's another topic altogether.

Here's a little story that's kind of interesting: back in the day I used to play "Custom Maps" online in Warcraft 3, games and such created by WC3 players. Anyway, one day, after playing a particular map, I felt extra hyper-ish for no particular reason, like some kind of huge addrenaline rush that I never get from a video game - I was literally shaking. The map I was playing was no more intense than any others, so I had no idea why. Then I remembered - sometimes your character's legs would get slashed, and endless gallons of blood (mind you, bad-graphics WC3 animated blood) would gush from the character's lower body, slowing their walking speed until they were killed. Never knew the sight of so much animated blood could have that affect, but apparently it did. Funny how no amount of Starcarft's or RE4's blood explosions (or any other game for that matter) ever did that to me... (Sooo off topic, sorry!)

It started when I was talking to my friend, and I just randomly said "plus one social point", matter-of-factly. Then I just kept going with it, kind of like I was the announcer to my own life. I ate lunch and I kept saying "plus one hunger point", and "Mom, I'm in the red! You gotta feed me!". I raced my friend that afternoon, and I just kept saying "agility points increased, agility points increased". haha that was the same day that I dressed up as Duke Nukem to play "Duke Nukem 3D".

I'm kind of surprised I can function normally in life these days lol

Okay, okay, I got one... Maybe Steben can relate to this on some level, too.

You know you've played online chess too much when you are playing chess at a real board with a friend, and, violating any "touch-move" precedent you may have set, pick up a piece to move it, only to decide against it. Now, you're not dumb, and you're pretty sure you know where you picked up the piece from originally, but you don't want to make a stupid mistake, so you casually lift the piece away from the board and drop it off of the table...

I've totally done this/caught myself about to do this in real life a couple of times. Laugh-out-loud funny when it happens, but it certainly puts things in perspective, too.

when GTA 3 came out I was obsessed with it and played it for days uninterrupted. When I finally got out home I felt the urge to open all the cars that i saw parked in the streets.

Luckily the feeling didn't last long, otherwise I would be writing this message from a less comfortable place.

A friend of mine had a similar experience, in which (around the same time I was in the gta3 spree) I showed him the greatness of Quake 2 multiplayer. We played it every day religiously for hours, and he became totally addicted to it, playing it solo for hours and days even if we weren't playing multiplayer.

One morning, he came to work (we worked together), and he told me he wouldn't play quake 2 ever again. He looked really tired, and I asked him why he wouldn't play anymore. He told me that last night he was trying to sleep but everytime he closed his eyes he saw some of the quake monsters running towards him, yelling the stuff they yelled in the game, which scared the shit out of him and he couldn't sleep at all because it happened everytime he closed his eyes as he was laying down in bed.

Not surprisingly, we were back into quake 2 multiplayer a few days later in the same week.

One day I was walking across a bridge and looked down at the water. I turned to my friend and said, "That looks like XBox water." She gave me the strangest look and then I realized that it was real water. From then on, we always joke about what console it looks like the water was generated from.

When ever I go into an uncomfortable place (like my old basement..creepy fuggin place), I put my hands up so I can see them like I'm in an FPS.

Many of my friends and I use pwn, n00b, 1337, and other such terms on a regular basis. But only with each other.

As per the bash.org quote, I constantly find myself Ctrl+F'ing when looking for a certain shirt, or a pair of socks in the morning.

My gaming went in hardcore phases. First, I was heavily involved in RTCW:ET. I mean, wake up, play, eat, play, piss, play, play, eat, play, sleep, wake up, play... Probably 15-16 hours per day. When school started that year, my sister tried to wake me up, and I responded "Bitch, fix the goddamn command post". I also tried trickjumping down some ramps and stuff in the same "legs are stuck in the jump position" glitchy bounces.

Second, my brother and I were hardcore into D2X. To the point of, again, playing 7-8 hours per day after school. (I sold a 6:6:3 CTA to Charsi on accident, for 5000 gold). I never said anything from the game, but I remember randomly hearing the sound of gold falling to the ground.

Lastly, MapleStory. This was probably the most dangerous one, because I started to think of the world as flat, and having no depth at all. I also learned that a 17 hour MS spree followed by a 4:00AM trip to Wal-Mart because you have the munchies is a bad idea. There was a car in the other lane, and I was thinking of everything from the side view, with everything being flat, so I envisioned two cars heading straight toward each other... I swerved off the road, and slapped myself around a bit, not only to wake myself up, but to remind myself that I don't live in a video game.

I actually went through the real game on the real screens, and monsters were generated as they should be. I also have once given a friend instructions on how to get to dungeon 2 from the start screen... over the phone and without having the game in front of me! I guess it's kinda bad if you can memorize an entire game screen for screen but don't know the street layout of your own town...

When my sister was playing LoZ:OoT, she knew from me telling her that the Water Temple was a bitch... When she got there (She was upstairs, I was downstairs) she yelled for me to come up there... Then I asked where she was, and I walked her through the Water Temple from memory.

Guess I'll be the fourth for the "draws circles around trees" club. Thanks, Okami!

During my second semester at college, I played SSBM almost constantly with my newfound friends. This had dire consequences on my ability to concentrate in class, as my mind was filled with visions of SSBM characters doing sweet moves. And yes, I mean visions, and quite literally.
