DVD ripping help

So I have some DVDS that I want on my hard drive So I can watch them w/o having the disc in. What is the best program to use.
I have tried google but a lot of the software they give me looks kinda shady.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are there are any free programs that will automatically encode a DVD into DivX too? That would be really nice.
