In other words: it's a freaking awesome game well worth the low low price it's going for nowadays!

The general consensus is that the game is pretty terrible to trudge through. Hell, I downloaded and played the demo 3 times each time thinking that I'd actually enjoy it more. This was certainly not the case.
Big buyer beware on that one.

dunno if i've mentioned this before, but with all the talk of soundtracks by ocr people i figured i'd mention this.
novo interactive (http://www.novo-interactive.com[/url) is producing a game called Ye Olde PANIC which i'm the composer for. it's all high-energy electronica with a strong fantasy element...and there's a demo that i did available here (http://prophet.escariot.net/demo.mp3). it's a sorta top-down action game with a similar battle mechanic to fable 2. there's a bunch of stuff available on their site to get you pumped.
it's going to be an XBLA game, so it'll be cheap...and it already looks AMAZING. the amount of work that's already gone into it is immense.

So I was able to get my media center working on the 360 with the help of transcode 360. Now I can watch ALL my videos without having to torture myself with trying to convert them to a playable form of wmv. If my computer were more powerful, I'd be able to stream HD, but for now just being able to watch all my vids and cable from my PC on my 360 with my 32" set in the living room as opposed to a 17" monitor makes my day.
It's like Christmas all over again. :-P

Malaki-LEGEND.sys
02-19-2009, 01:59 PM
You can just google it up and you should find a d/l link for it.
Basically, it's a freeware program that you install on the actual system from which you'll be streaming, and when you select media center on the 360, it'll be enabled automatically. All you have to do is scroll through your vid files, hit the X button on the videos that would be otherwise unplayable and select "transcode." According to the user manual, certain files might still be unplayable, although I haven't run into that problem thus far and I'm sure it's probably just a matter of installing the right codecs. In the case of HD streaming, I had some bad skipping, slowdown, and no audio but as I said before my system just isn't up to spec for that kind of thing. I'm sure most of you PC connoisseurs won't have that issue. You can also change several of the settings such as how to set up audio conversion and sync, temp folder to which files will be transcoded, etc. Since you're installing it on your PC, there's no modding going on so your 360 is risk free.
Just give it a shot and I'm sure it'll help. It'd be nice if MS would have enabled the playback of all types of vid files, but meh.

I've been reading around about Battle Fantasia, and I'm pretty interested. A bit more of an accessible fighter from the guys behind Guilty Gear(which if I see a 360 incarnation I WILL buy), that has a cool visual style and looks pretty fun? Yes please.
What can you tell me about your time with it?

It's a very straightforward fighter. I wouldn't call it particularly deep; not on the level of something like Street Fighter; it's more of a Street Fighter-lite. Still very fun.
Graphics and art are very pretty and the music is wonderful. Controls are tight, and characters are varied enough. They all fit the old anime-fighter clichés; movelists are standard; lots of QCF/QCB/etc.
Overall it's a really nice package. I like it a lot.

While I was playing SF4 today (off the disc) I accidentally tilted the console slightly and heard a very bad grinding kind of sound. I continued playing for a few more mins then restarted. Now, the game pops up with an "unreadable" error at various points (ie. trying to enter Training mode, menu music won't play, various challenges). I tried restarting the system and the disc itself LOOKS fine. Am I screwed? WTF Microsoft?

I had a similar, yet really stupid scare myself one day. I forgot I put Gears of War disc below the CoD4 inside the CoD4 case. I didn't notice that I grabbed 2 discs, and to my surprise both of them fit inside the tray with the 360 standing vertical. I still don't know how I didn't notice that I somehow placed 2 discs in the tray. It made the most disturbing noise, but I'm lucky none of them became scratched and still work.

See if you can trade with the store you bought it at. Other remedies include waiting a day or two, polishing the disc, trying to install to harddrive and crying.
Honestly, this is the reason I install all my most-played games to harddrive! Not only does it remove any disc noises, it keeps it from being scratched AND makes the games load faster (generally speaking).

quoted you because I just did that today. I'm still waiting for Outrun Arcade to be on Live Arcade, then I won't be needing anymore games on the 360 for the rest of the year, as far as I'm seeing for the rest of the year right now.
Oh, and Banjo Tooie since I never finished the original. And since they're smoothing out the frame rate issues (no more slowdown hopefully), I'm game. To be frank, I hated Banjo Nuts and Bolts, I gave it a shot, but the stuff I'd build wouldn't balance right. I'd steer only so far, and I'd do a 180. The enemies would knock off the parts, messing up the challenges, to the point of me wanting to throw the controller across the room. Then the tutorial was so, I don't know, not that helpful for me.
And the challenges, what good is it for me to build something when the game already has a pre built vehicle to handle the situation? Banjo Land's Captain Blubber challenge protecting Clanker made me stop playing the game.
But, the music was excellent. Banjo Land making reference to the first game was just golden for me, and the humor was great too.
I just wish that game was centered on platforming only, I don't think it would have hurt the game to strictly bide by that (from what I've heard, Nuts and Bolts didn't fare so well in sales).

My problem with Halo Wars, from what I played of the demo, is that it consists entirely of "build lots of units, tell all units to attack". That's... really dull. There was no way to assign groups, so you couldn't do any sort of strategy easily. There was no way to select more-than-one but less-than-all of your units easily, which meant that it was near-impossible to do even simple tactics like leaving some of your units behind for base defense or attack different targets simultaneously.
I'm not one of the "lulz mouse + keyboard better at everything!" types, but RTS games are really the exception. Halo Wars demostrates exactly what the problems with a console-based RTS game are. Hell, even turn based strategy games are fine, but RTS, where the time it takes to input commands actually matters? That's a different story...

You're lucky. At GameStop, I have to tell people that they can trade in their copy as defective, and buy a different copy of the game. They usually get ~$10 off the cost of a different one that way.
One of my managers always asks them, "did you bump your system?" as if they didn't. They always say, "no way!" but that's obviously where the laser burns came from.
Then I have to explain how common it is for 360s to eat discs like candy. Please put your system horizontally. Also, take the game out before you move your system. In fact, you probably should just take the game out every time you're done playing. Thanks for shopping at GameStop, have a great day.
Native Jovian
03-02-2009, 04:48 PM
I've never had a problem with my 360 eating discs -- is it just when the system is vertical? Or is it just that it's easier to bump it when it's vertical? My 360 is horizonal, and the way I've got it set up it's in an out-of-the-way place so I'm never even near it unless I'm switching out a game disc (yay for wireless controllers!).
zircon
03-02-2009, 04:49 PM
It apparently can happen any time the 360 is moved with a disc in it, regardless of whether the 360 is on or the disc is spinning. There have been tens of thousands of reported cases, so it's just bad design. If you don't touch the system though it becomes much more rare.

I agree with your points, and I think that if you're a big RTS fan, then Halo Wars just won't do it for you. It really does have a "my first RTS" feel to it, but that withstanding I still can't wait to pick up my copy tomorrow.
I've played Starcraft and loved it(although admittedly I never became a pro at it), but outside of Blizzard stuff I don't have much RTS cred. I actually like the fact that basebuilding isn't so crazy and they put the focus on combat rather than resource management, although that's a drawback for some people. Your enjoyment of the game will come from what you expect from it. If you're an RTS fan expecting a deep RTS game, then steer clear from this one.
Also, there are some commands that don't appear in the tutorial, such as holding left trigger to scroll faster, and using the right trigger to scroll through different unit types.

This. If you plan on moving your system at all, do yourself a favor and take out the disc. I moved mine once with a disc in it (system was unplugged), and the next time I fired it up I kept getting Disc Read errors. Took the disc out and it had a laser ring. Needless to say I take my discs out before I move my 360 at all anymore.
And just as a heads up, if you have a Hollywood Video near you, they can buff your disc to look brand new. It's only a few dollars, which is much cheaper than buying a new copy.

no one, apparently.
you're fine to post here, ninja. no sweat =)
Due to my place of living, I can't download demos. Life sucks for me in Japan. >_<
Also I enjoyed Afro Samurai, it was stylish, a bit repetitive, and had one of the most badass OSTs ever.

didn't they stop sending boxes a few months back?
I guess their website was a bit slow in adapting. And I wasn't notified officially.

Ugh. My RROD'd 360 is coming back since almost 1 month ago. Whenever you get an RROD, never trust Microsoft saying they're sending you a box. Just go to the UPS ASAP and get it over with. Dammit.
lol yeah that what i did. Ask for the USP sticker via email, print it, put it on a box and go yourself to usps. My 360 was back after 1 week.

1 week is pretty fast -_-;
Mine took about 2 weeks since the UPS mailing.
I'm sort of glad that my 360 broke down so spectacularly because Microsoft sent me an awesome new Jasper 360 that runs SILENTLY. It's really incredible. None of the loud console noise, the fan noise, none of it. I hear that you have to pull your teeth to get a new console if something like that ever happens to my Wii. I'm glad Microsoft is so eager to please and replace. Even if the whole process took me almost a month because of the box fiasco.

i recently bought a jasper, and it's pretty awesome. i wanted hi-def, and my old system was so bloody loud, even with a benq drive. the new jaspers all have the lite-on drive (which is bloody impossible to hack without special tools, hence why my drive's in brooklyn right now), which is increibly quiet, and the fans run like 50% less because of the significant power reduction. really, really nice. too bad MS hasn't publicized this yet.

I WANT A JASPER :(
I still have the first gen Core, no HDMI and full of crap... I'm hoping for a spectacular breakdown before this warranty runs out.

yeah a silent console is something i like a lot too. No one like noise poping out of your console when you play an immersive game.

That's why I love the installation option, but some games don't like it. Apparently Halo 3 loads a lot slower. I tried it with PGR4, and I noticed during some races the sound effects sounded like they were crackling, and the music started messing up at some point(slowing down).
prophetik
04-05-2009, 02:42 PM
halo 3 caches the next level during the course of the level that you're in, so it loads faster with a disc than if you're on the hd. the disc was 'written' with loading early in mind, and the hard drive has to go back and pace through all the stuff from the previous level to find where the heck the next level's files are.
you know you can buy a jasper online (like i did), just the console, for around 120-140$ through ebay, right? then use the license transfer tool to transfer licenses to your new console.

Then break it on purpose. lol.
Put a towel over it, covering the fan-outputs tightly and run it for a day. They won't know if you did it intentionally or not since the cause of overheating is the same. Then send it ASAP to UPS.
And write a polite little letter asking for "Jasper please!"
As for installing, it's a nice option, though the drives having 20GB or even 60GB doesn't cut it. You really need that expensive 160GB option to really get into installing games.

eh, how many games can you REALLY be playing at once? i play one and move on, with some madden 09 in between. one or two game installs is all i need.

I'm starting to get annoyed with all these Japanese developers(Namco, Tecmo, and probably SE) and their habit of releasing games such as Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Ninja Gaiden 2, and probably Star Ocean 4 on the Xbox 360 only to release them on the Playstation 3 not a year later that adds in not just extra content like new characters and outfits, but entirely new storyline and scenarios. Is it budget or time constraints? Did they actively make the decision to hold on to the content and wait to release it on everybody's(Japan) favorite next-gen console?
Reason tells me that it's the former, but that doesn't lessen the sting anymore that we've essentially received incomplete games. What I don't understand is how we can't get this content what with the fact that we're in the DLC era of gaming.
Maybe I'm just bitter, but I can't help but think that I'd still be pissed off about this mentality even if I owned just a PS3 or both systems

Buy all the 360 games you can find, proclaim yourself "a collector" and be proud. That's what I do when I want to cry :/

Such tears are incredibly delicious at times...
But in all seriousness, I thought it had to do with Microsoft not wanting to play nice with the developers on distributing online content for the extra stuff that comes on the PS3 version...
Nonetheless this thread's been making me more and more happier with my purchase long ago; aside from what I've already got on it doing so.

Yeah I hear you. When I heard about the new character for the PS3 version of Vesperia, was a little miffed.
I don't mind dropping some points to get her as DLC, but it still sucks. What the poop, Namco? :whatevaa:

Is there a grand list somewhere that tells which games runs better on the hard drive and what runs better off the disc? I can never figure out if it's a good idea to download onto my HD.
Let's say, for example, Mass Effect?

Hopefully we WILL get the DLC, Namco's generally been crazy with DLC (see SCIV and Katamari for example). I'm more pissed about Eternal Sonata since Tri-Crescendo probably can't afford/justify the DLC.
Also, Namco hates US/EU really. Half of their releases stay in Japan and we never get the same support when it comes to additional content :(

I think it's just more a case of a lot of their titles catering more to Japanese gamers as opposed to western gamers.

first link on a google search of "360 hard drive list" is the main one (http://www.bingegamer.net/2008/so-how-much-time-are-you-saving-xbox-360-nxe-hard-drive-install-chart/) available. basically, the elevator scenes are just as long (they're coded to be that long no matter what) but there aren't loading screens when you move around too fast.

i'm looking for someone to hang onto my character's weapons and gold in fable long enough to transfer them to a new character. anyone got five minutes to spare for me sometime in the next few days? it really won't take very long at all, and i'm home almost all of the next two days.

I'm looking at picking the game up again soon (Stupid Lionhead is actually making MORE expansions that actually sound interesting...) and I'd be glad to help if I can get it before your two days are up. I'll PM you if I get it in the next few days (someone may hook you up beforehand though).

Oh hey while old news (http://www.ps3center.net/news/2232/dead-rising-2-confirmed-multiplatform/) (reported on January 27 of 09) Dead Rising 2 will be on both the PS3 and 360; however the 360 "will be getting exclusives in showing good will to the console"
Then again this also follows my recent search of Capcom's plans (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/05/capcom-looking-to-bring-psone-classic-to-psn.ars)

So anyone read about Microsoft dropping their requirement that all 360 games have to be 720p native?
I think this could be a very good thing for small developers of niche games like Muramasa and such. Maybe a port of Madworld and No More Heroes is in order.
I dunno about 480p, but my one problem is that at least on my HDTV, 480i is blurry as all hell. I don't like the blurry.
prophetik
09-03-2009, 01:06 PM
i doubt they'd go to 480p. this requirement drop allows devs to work in, say, 560p or so...but they'll never go that far, i don't think. the whole thing with the 360 is that it's a high-def console, and that high-def content is critical for the system.
it's also supposed to help xbla more, since they can spend less time working on super-def visuals and more on gameplay, so that fewer games suck.
