View Full Version : MEETUP: Baltimore, MD + Pixietricks' recital – pics p.9, recordings p.11

You are cordially invited to pixietricks' junior recital!
When: Thursday, February 15th at 7:00 pm
Where: Griswold Hall
Peabody Conservatory of Music
(1 Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore)
How much? FREE!
The program:
Gustav Holst's Op. 35 "Four Songs for Voice and Violin," from A Medieval Anthology
"Cinq Mélodies Populaires Greques," by Maurice Ravel
Benjamin Britten's bizarro set "On this Island"
"Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" (a.k.a. "Shepherd on the Rock") by Franz Schubert!
I will be accompanied by Daniel Butman (violin and piano), and Catherine Wong (clarinet).
It's going to be a fun night, and I'd love to see some familiar faces there! The recital itself will be only an hour long, so we can all go out for a big dinner party afterwards, if that suits your fancy. And let's see... Important stuff to know:
- Peabody does have a parking garage, which can be located at 606 Saint Paul St. It's inexpensive, so you can always fall back on that if there's no street parking available.
- Griswold Hall is located on the second floor of the conservatory building.
- Doors will open at 6:45.
- There will be plenty of students in the audience, so it's not expected that you get all dressed up. Just don't come in ripped up jeans. ^_~
The meetup will start at 6:00, to allow for parking and finding your way around. Try to be on time, so we don't have any last-minute stragglers who don't know where to go once they're inside! Official meeting spot is Peabody's main entrance, and zircon (and probably DrumUltimA) will be inside there to meet you! If you don't have their cell phone numbers, I would definitely suggest PM'ing them now. Here's a map to orient yourselves with:

Damn, so early this year :( . Looks like someone is taking advantage of the day after Valentine's Day to have a certain someone in the area for sure ;) .
Heh, I remember my junior recital...it just happened to be at the same time as the UnMod meetup, so they came to see me perform. When I was done, everybody yelled, "NICE WORK."
Best of luck. ;)
P.S. MP3s plz

I don't think I'll be able to go. Any sort of impromptu travel is really not my sort of thing. Besides, I'm planning on going to North Carolina that weekend to visit a friend. Hopefully those plans will be successful... since last time they were not. I'm really lazy.
Good luck, pixie! (though, I'm sure you won't need any.)

You guys won't see me until I'm up on stage, unfortunately, because I'll be busy warming up with my accompanists. BUT, there is a cafeteria at Peabody (and vending machines), so I'm sure you could grab something before 6:45. The *real* food will happen afterwards when we go out. :>

Ya, as Andy said, Penn station is the closest. It's really easy- just a 20 minute walk to Peabody, straight south on a one-way north street. Dave said he'd like to try to make it as well, though, so if you plan in advance maybe you two could hitch a ride. I'd love to finally meet Paige! (And it'd be great to see you again, of course!)

I wish I could make it out for a bit of meet-up/culture goodness. I hope that all goes well with your recital. (I can't remember if you tell singers to break legs like with actors...) A quick question for you, Ms. pixietricks: my mom used to sing opera when she was in college. She was a coloratura mezzo-soprano. Sadly, she doesn't sing opera nowadays. I wish she still did because just talking about opera I can see how happy it made her. I guess it's like that for you. It must be if you're going to school for it and everything. Anyway, my question is this: what voice are you?
José the Bronx Rican
02-07-2007, 03:20 AM
Check her site, which I did because my co-worker asked me the same question: soprano, with a thin slice of mezzo. :)
My only option for a short-notice Thursday is to call into work sick, so if I don't turn up to greet you folks on the 15th, you'll know then whether I can make this one.
Jillian Aversa
02-07-2007, 05:10 AM
Anyway, my question is this: what voice are you?
I'm a soubrette with coloratura tendencies. Used to sing mezzo back in high school, so perhaps that's where José got the impression, but my range has moved up a lot since then. Nice that your mom used to sing opera!

Okay, everybody! I'm designating Peabody's main entrance as the official meeting spot for 6:00 this Thursday. There are a lot of doors to get into the building, but this is the only one that doesn't require swipe card access, so it seems like the best choice. (Plus, the steps leading up to the two big doors make it more recognizable!)
Here's a map to orient yourselves with:
http://www.jilliangoldin.com/lilmap.jpg
If you can't find street parking, Peabody has a garage on the other side of the building, located on Saint Paul St.
zircon (and probably DrumUltimA) will be inside at the main entrance to meet you! If you don't have their cell phone numbers, I would definitely suggest PM'ing them now. I say this because I won't be available to answer my phone or see you guys until after the performance. ^_~

It's times like this that I wish I had a steady enough income to be able to afford a trip down to Maryland from here in Michigan... it would be more than worth it to get to hear Jill sing live, and to meet everyone in person. I know i'm not known here on the forums, rarely do I post...(Jill may remember me, I sorta stumbled upon some of her WIP's on her website awhile back and told her of the security issue ;)... but I do wish to say, I wish you the very best of luck on your recital Jill. I had a dream last night that I was at the recital, except that pixietricks started singing more jazz and funk tunes. At first, I was playing drums for the recital, but then Zircon showed up and since he was the better drummer, I moved to a B3 organ.
I think I'm going crazy; I've had too many wierd dreams this week.
Katsurugi
02-13-2007, 07:29 PM
^Whoa. That's a pretty weird dream all right. B3 organs are crazy old school... (but apparently, according to wikipedia, there's a new one that was released in 2002.) I've only seen the older kind though... they smell kind of musty.

Seriously, my sleep patern has been really messed up and I've been having wierd dreams almost every night. In one, I was at a Pat Metheny Group concert and the pianist got sick partway through, so I sat in (as if I'd ever in my life be good enough to even think about playing with one of the best modern jazz groups). Pat started hitting on me after the concert. It was freaky. My wife looked at me funny when I told her about the dream.

02-15-2007, 05:18 AM
Well, it's been a crazy day. Baltimore was raped by the weather, so school was canceled... which normally would be an awesome thing, but it gave rise to a couple complications. There was supposed to be a Wind Ensemble concert at Peabody tonight, but it has now been postponed to tomorrow night. This means a) DrumUltimA probably won't be able to come to more than a couple songs in my recital, and b) my clarinetist for Shepherd on the Rock had a direct conflict.
Good news is that she found a sub for the concert, so I'll still have her all to myself until 8:00. I just wish Daggu didn't have to miss it, and the dinner party afterwards. :<

I was hoping you'd be wearing white gloves so I could follow up on the "giving a rectal" joke. But that's okay, the last two posts satisfied the part of my brain that's still 8 years old.
Congrats, the pics look great! It's great that everybody went out to dinner with your family, but I can't stop laughing imagining the "mom, dad, can I bring 4 guys I met on the internet to dinner?" conversation :)

Considering zircon is her boyfriend, somehow I don't think it so weird.

Not to mention the fact that she's met the other 3 in person as well.

The recital was indeed very well done. I was taken a bit by surprise, because I haven't been keeping up with OC Remix lately, and pixie's vocal skill has appearantly improved a great deal since its (already impressive) showcase in "The Place we Knew".
Very well done, Jill, thank you for inviting us all (even though the group pic you posted makes me look like a stoner).

Errr... To be fair, you can't really compare The Place We Knew with anything I do classically. I sound completely different singing in a pop style. And while people say I have been continually improving in the classical style as well, the difference isn't that drastic. You'd have to listen to the other classical stuff up on my website now to make an accurate comparison. ^_~

Yeah. And in the worst case scenario, if I were pixie, I would be like "As you all know, this is my boyfriend and these are his shady friends that I'm just meeting for the first time."
=D

Well that conversation's still a funny thought, even if it never actually happened :P

Well what about Amor Mio, Caro Bene then, hmmmm?
Rejected though it may have been.

Sure, although you'd have to try to ignore all the ridiculous amounts of reverb m1lesteg applied, since it makes my voice sounds bigger than it actually was. That was recorded my freshman year, and as it was in the opera style, I'm sure you would notice improvement since then. I cringe when I hear that mix, lol.
EDIT:
Okay, guys. Here are a few recordings! I decided not to post the whole recital, so as to give you something to look forward to when I update my website in March. For now, here is one movement from each of the first three song sets, plus the Schubert in its entirety:
Gustav Holst, Op. 35 "Four Songs for Voice and Violin": I sing of a maiden (http://www.jilliangoldin.com/music/classical/i_sing_of_a_maiden.mp3)
Maurice Ravel, "Cinq Mélodies Populaires Greques": La-bas, vers l'église (http://www.jilliangoldin.com/music/classical/la-bas_vers_l'eglise.mp3)
Benjamin Britten, "On This Island": Seascape (http://www.jilliangoldin.com/music/classical/seascape.mp3)
Franz Schubert, "Shepherd on the Rock (http://www.jilliangoldin.com/music/classical/der_hirt_auf_dem_felsen.mp3)"
No VGM in the program? Have you no dignity?????????
