Bumping real quick. This will be a fairly quick little tournament, since the support and interest is really very low.

Two great but incredibly tough wins vs. Rainman DX.
1) 6-5, 80 moves.
2) 5k-4 win, 76 moves.
My finishing move in game 2:

As Kamoh mentioned, he did beat me in two hairline close games. I'd like to think that Kamoh and I are pretty evenly balanced, because I think his experience won out this time. And of course a number of good moves helped too.
In an astounding exhibition of luck, good luck, and more luck, I nabbed two wins off of DarkeSword, to bring me back up to even W/L. I think I pulled the right draw, like, three times in a row at one point. It was just obnoxious. I entirely anticipate the uberpwnage coming my way in the playoffs, after this.
Also got my games in with Hemophiliac. I was pleased with an initial win, where basically everything was going my way. Once my luck ran out though, Hemo had ample opportunity to display his prowess, and did so with a solid win.
So,
Rainman DX vs. Kamoh, 0-2.
Rainman DX vs. DarkeSword, 2-0.
Rainman DX vs. Hemophiliac, 1-1.
Whew! Came out even on my first go around - decent, I'd like to think. That said, I'm finding that with this game, I could've played just as well and lost 6 in a row. Not like chess, in that way...
EDIT: Dude, Kamoh, where'd the table go? I guess I only have JD and Arek left to play, right?

Woooow...fantastic job with the two victories vs. DS - although I still consider him to be the best player until he loses a playoff.
Hopefully JD has been studying a little bit - I'd really like to add high-caliber players to the list and Rainman is certainly a low-mistake player like the most of us.

Oh...in the interests of speedy play, don't worry about the alternating rule - we've had so much trouble with this in the past and currently that it doesn't really matter, plus there's no significant advantage to going first.

I was wondering if my initial assessment of that was correct - what with the random numbers on pawns from the outset, it would appear that neither Light nor Dark would hold a significant advantage by moving first. Not like chess, where I think White hold, like, a 50.5% winning percentage or something like that.

Well my issue is that, say you have a 2 king, and all 1 pawns. A 4 or a 3 strikes, threatens the king on the first move, and neither can you block him or he moves out of the way, game over.
This scenario is one reason why I'd actually like to see the game played on a 9x9 board, 8 pawns, 1 king, and both kings are centered. While this doesn't develop play quickly, it certainly kills many "go first" advantages. Darkesword will say "nah, doesn't need to be changed" (also said this to a checkmate-style rule), but it's just a thought - someone with C++ skillz could work it :D

If a 3 or 4 threatens the king on the first move, all you have to do is move IN with your king. Now your king is safe. You can't kill on the first move.

Anyway, give me a heads up when you're available, would you?

Alright, I'm officially expanding the playoff field to 4, with the following schedule:
Match A: 1st vs. 2nd
Match B: 3rd vs. 4th
Match C: Loser A vs. Winner B
Match D: Winner A vs. Winner C
These will be 2/3 matches instead of the 3/5 as previously mentioned - faster tournament.

Another win and that changes to a top two finish - but I'm going for 14-0 anyways...

If you couldn't tell, I'm having troubles with them as well. I just really wanna go undefeated, is all.
Again the new deadline is Friday, but I would really like to ensure the top 2, middle 2, and bottom 2 - if all those places are locked (which would probably take 26 or 28 out of the 30 games), I'll cut to the bracket (of course the deadline still looms).

Yes, you need three wins out of three games, but all I need is two wins out of four games to significantly better my chances of earning a second-seed.

The most recent table is the final table.
Basically, this is the same as the system I had proposed (1 gets a bye, 2 and 3 play in the semifinal), but with a preliminary round, where 1 and 2 fight for the bye, and 3 and 4 fight to survive.

Hemo and I had a heated argument over this. Basically he's tired of me flip flopping on my rules and systems - he's right about that.
Anyways, Darkesword vs. Rainman, 2/3.
Winner plays me, 2/3.

I've tried to contact you on two separate occasions now, Mr. Ansari. I've IM'd you twice - I'll send you a PM shortly just in case. I'd sure love to make some Moves with you  if you know what I mean. If you've been busy, I understand, but I'd appreciate a response...
EDIT: Okay, here's the breakdown. I'm pretty annoyed. I needed one game to work out the cobwebs, and I lost 3 pieces to 6 as I recall... The next match I owned up with some lucky breaks and finished 6 pieces to 1. The ensuing tiebreaker ....
... was only 5 moves long!! Good gosh. I made an arguably simple oversight in my first and only real move. In one fell swoop, DarkeSword had pinned my King(2) in with a 1, and no escape route. One nondescript move later, and it was over. Rather disappointing, considering my win at hand.
So there you go. Rainman DX vs. DarkeSword, 1-2.
kamoh
02-21-2007, 09:11 PM
I beat Darkesword in the final, 2-0.
Game 1 saw me ahead just about every step of the way, 6-3, but I had to dogfight my way back from a two-piece deficit early in game 2 - he also had my king pinned two ways - somehow I won it 6-3 on a final-move fork-sac.
Moves is a great game, but we just don't have enough players to keep a recurring tournament like this. If you want to recruit and share it with friends (my girlfriend has been playing the remains I left on her computer), we might be able to start this up again in the future.
