Round 2: Knuckes Chaotix 'Over Oceans Blue'
Here we go, my first time hosting this competition, so bear with me! Background track is a remix of the 'seascape' track from Knuckles Chaotix soundtrack.
Here are the rules for this round, slightly altered from last time, but mostly copied from Pixie's rules:
You must use my instrumental track for the background. The track may not be changed— only added upon with your vocals and effects, or spliced if you're going for an a cappella section.
You may choose to sing the source melody as it already stands, if your range is that wide. Original melodies and harmonies are applauded, however. Don't be afraid to take some chances!
You can write original lyrics or sing without words; it's up to you! Additionally, if you'd like to sing with lyrics but can't think of any, you may collaborate with someone else so long as you give them credit. No borrowing from other sources unless you run it by me first.
Texts for songs with lyrics must be included in the email to me. And if your song is in a foreign language, an English translation is required.
Effects are more than welcome, but the main vocals may not be vocoded.
Auto-pitch correction will not be allowed. Not when I'm hosting this compo. If pitch correction has been used (and you are caught), you will be disqualified.
Entries: All entries are due by 3rd March 2007, which is about a month from now.
MP3 submissions should be tagged and sent to themalcos@gmail.com, and may be hosted online or included as an attachment. If you send me your track well before the deadline and then decide you wanna make some changes, that's totally cool. It's never too late to send again before the round closes. Do not post your track in this thread, however! We don't want anyone to "draw inspiration" from your original ideas, and plus... more suspense. :D At the end of the month, I will host all of the tracks on my website and edit the first post for everyone to see. I'm really copying Pixie's post here!
Collabs: Pixie and I have discussed this issue, and have decided that, in order to keep this competition fair and somewhat balanced, collaborations will be limited to only 2 vocalists.
Voting: Entries are now in, and so it's voting time! All entrants must participate as well, in the spirit of comradery, and cannot vote on their own mix. Everyone will choose their top three entries, listing them in order from most favorite to least favorite, and PM their votes to me. #1 choices will receive three points, #2 choices two, and #3 choices one. Make sense? We won't actually be rating the mixes on each of the following criteria, but I ask that you keep these things in mind while you vote:
Creativity (personal flair, interesting harmonies, original lyrics, etc)
Vocal execution (pitch, rhythm, confidence, etc)
Production (bad/hissy recordings, dry mixing, etc)We want to reward people for getting out there, even if they think their singing could use some improvement. So don't just vote for your favorite vocalist. Everybody deserves a chance! Don't forget that with each vote, you must also write a least a sentence saying why you voted that way, what you liked about the vocal performance etc. These will be used as feedback for the vocalists when the competition is over. Voting ends Sunday March 11th, winners will be announced on the 12th.

Whohoo. About time round 2 began.
It's been a long while since I played this game, but I have to say it's one of my top 5 best Sonic games ever. I also remember some very enjoyable music.
Very nice remix, Malcos. It has a lot of ambient and hip-hop sounds.

DarkChocobo and I will once again be working together on a submission piece. So mark us down on the list of participants.
I'm really digging this piece, Malcos. It lends itself to vocals even better than the piece they used in VOCR 1.
Good luck, everybody! Can't wait to hear what you people can come up with.

Yeah that's the name of the original, I'm sure you can do a bit of searching to find the original track, I'm not sure if it would be legal for me to host it.

Nice track! Due date is the day before my 21st birthday and it's gonna be a busy few weeks, but I think I'll be able to put something together. Count me in! :D

By the way, your first post still says "Round 1"... hehehehehehe.

Before your 21st birthday? So I guess you'll be busy after your birthday, eh? (Possibly drinking alcohol?? =0)
But I agree, the first round was pretty intense. There were a lot of submissions, but I think that might also scare away some other people too. More competition, the harder it is to win. But it should just be about trying your best and having fun.. though winning a cash prize doesn't hurt either. ^_^;;

I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get something in for this one. Student teaching's been very time consuming, and I haven't even gotten a chance to start on anything with this yet, even though I'm on February vacation! None-the-less, I will try to get something done, even if it's lyric-less.

Oooh...more exposure...I'm not sure whether to be excited or scared. Nonetheless, a week + general thread = great balls of fire. I hope the mods agree since this round is clearly overlooked compared to the first one. Just compare the number of views and enterants.
BTW...I think you're on to an interesting idea/rule, Malcos. If the mods accept, I think it would be cool to move any compo to the general thread as soon as the voting process begins. Of course, that is if the organizer of the compo asks for more exposure. Then, they can move the compo thread back to this sub-forum after the voting process is over. I know it requires more work....
I'm itching to comment on the performances of the rest of my fellow vocalists, since it's obvious in my eyes on who sang what. It's hard to hold my tongue, but I will. :)

It actually might be a good idea to have a sticky in General for all the compos to post when voting times are up or something, that way all someone has to do is add a new post like "VOCR voting stage begins now."
Then again, maybe not....I dunno.

^ Yah, this was an excellent experience for myself. It definitely revealed my weaknesses and I know what to work on next time around.
Congrats to Hale-Bopp and Dragon Avenger. You both had excellent entries. (Didn't realize we only had 8 people voting though. This compo is in dire neeed of attention.)

Thanks, everyone! I had a lot of fun with this track. This is my first time winning an online competition, so I'm abundantly overjoyed to say the least.
I took the liberty of uploading a newer version of my entry. I thought everyone should know which entry was mine, so you can grab it right here:
Knuckles Chaotix - Over Ocean's Blue - By Malcos & Hale-Bopp (http://hale.voidaudio.net/music/HB_Knuckles_Chaotix_Over_Oceans_Blue.mp3) (NEWER VERSION)
and Lyrics (http://hale.voidaudio.net/music/lyrics_overoceansblue.txt)
I basically just tightened a few things up production-wise and retagged the MP3. I hope you dig it!
Thanks to Malcos for generously providing prizes and an excellent backing track which was perfectly suited for vocals, and to the rest of the contestants who maintained a positive and easy going atmosphere throughout the competition. It's been a pleasure sharing this moment in time with you guys. :)

Good jorb everyone, and an extra congratulations to the winners! If I may make a suggestion for next round, however- post in gendisc when the compy starts maybe? I missed this one because of it, and I'm sure others did too. Well, either way, I'll keep an eye out for Round 3, wherever it shows up!

I think we've all taken this for granted, but I/we need to thank Malcos for all the work he did for the contest. It's gotta be tough to run it, mix it, tally it, etc, so...
THANKS!

Yo, Malcos, are you gonna re-link to the entries in your first post? As it stands, there's no way for anyone to grab the tracks. Any new people visiting this thread won't have anything to listen to, that is unless they happen to find my previous post.

I didn't think anyone would want to now the competition is closed, but I guess I was wrong, so it's been re-linked.

Yeah it's kool. I personally think the most valuable thing for the entrants is the feedback they receive. When my time comes to host the comp again I'll make sure that vocalists get as much feedback as possible. Do you guys have any ideas for the next round of the competition? I'm not sure that me and Pixie will always be able to offer prizes. Any other incentives? Is there anything that as entrants you think that would have helped you if it had been available?
I'm quite disappointed that more people haven't been involved in this, not only in terms of the number of entrants, but particularly the number of votes, as this provides an opportunity for vocal development and peer feedback. Hopefully we can all put our heads together and keep this comp going for many more rounds to come!

Just read my feeback on Magical Kingdom. Very useful, guys. I'm so glad most of you liked what was going on with the lyrics, as I thought they would sound mostly cheesy. A Cookie for anyone who can find out the "reference to a fantasy novel" in the chrous...coughgooglecough....
Now as for the singing and production issues, I think the latter suffered more than the former. I understood from you guys that there were swollowed words, strange effects, and strange sounds. See, it's my first time actually producing sound via Sony's "Sound Forge" so I'm happy that I was able to pull off a clean mix without ant clipping and whatnot. The stange sounds mostly result from experimentation on echo and reverb...there are some default choices I can pick from, which I did...but I wanted to be more in control via manual settings. The swollowed sounds result from not exactly mastering the art of compression. I did a 3:1 compression, but I'm not sure if it turned out well. There's also the matter of volume of the singing compared to the mix itself; I tried as much as possible to make them blend, didn't turn out as well as I thought.
Now as for the singing, I'll try to be more "confident" next time as you guys suggested. There's this thing with the "record" button which makes you think that you're actually singing in front of people. Talk about stage fright, eh?
Man...this is REALLY harder than I originally thought...
Hmm...ideas for next round....maybe first place can pick a game soundtrack or a particular track to be remixed? I'll try to come up with more stuff...

Actually, I was really expecting/hoping that you'd be following pixietricks' formatting and link to each song individually (another good example of this is the DoD[link] (http://dod.vgmix.com) competition). The way it's set up now, nobody's gonna know whose song is whose. Plus, it's nice if people who are visiting get to listen to the top 3 tracks or whatever and associate those tracks with whom they belong to. Personally, I'd really like for everybody to have a nicely tagged copy of my entry so they can associate it with me. In addition, we can all get more feedback from those people who are just showing up to see the results. That's half of the fun right there for those who entered the competition, plus it's a nice reward for our hard work. I'd take the extra exposure over prizes any day. This sort of thing will also attract more competitors to future rounds.
Everybody who cares already has the rar file. Anyone new to the topic won't know whose track is whose when they open it up. I suggest that you retag them and link each person's name to their respective mp3 file.
btw, if web space is a problem, I can lend some for this contest. Just let me know. I'd be more than happy to help out!

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Most people brought out stuff that I knew, but it never hurts to hear people's opinions on what they heard and how it affected their experiance, as it were. I need to thank Kholdstare again for processing the vocals, especially in the *ahem* white girl rap section. He actually made it sound good!
I agree with Hale-Bopp in terms of exposure vs. prizes. (of course, I definately enjoyed my money, which will be spent on the first box set of Tekkaman Blade, don't get me wrong) I like it when people write me a PM or something either with tips, praise, or questions. It always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside when someone does that. As for how to do it, I don't really know. It would be one thing if there were a news blog on the front page where someone could comment on it, but that's not really an option beyond linking to the thread, but that's not really eye-catching. If the winning entry was made into a remix and posted, that would probably up the views, but that would require more work from the entrant and original mixer, and then it would still have to pass the panel. It's really a tough spot we're in with this contest.
As for a song for next time, I thought earlier that the first stage theme from Actraiser (Fillmore) might work out for this, but it would depend on the mix that was made to it. *shrug*

Thanks for the feedback guys. My ego is easily damaged, so thanks for being relatively soft with me.
I definitely would welcome any help on the production side of things next time around, or in between, or whenever anyone's available.
But yeah, I'd have to agree with a lot of what you all said.

Er, wasn't it supposed to be revealed who did what at the end of the contest?
I know which one was Hale's, and it's pretty obvious which one was DragonAvenger's, being the only female vocalist, but I really haven't a clue which of the other two contestants did which entry.
Also, in support of Hale's request to have the entries linked directly from the first post... I checked out the songs from the last round after it was over. I think there's probably quite a few new people who check out this board from time to time, and like to see/hear the entries from past competitions. It's kind of a teaser you can't.
Anyway, I don't mean to criticize. It was a great contest, and I really enjoyed hearing the results.

yay, thanks Malcos!
btw, thanks everyone for your insightful reviews. In fact, I've received more helpful reviews through this competition than in any other I've been in so far. Good stuff. I'm keeping in mind everything that I've read for the next time I work on something. :)

So now the big question is: when is round three? lol...I know I'm nagging, but this was an exciting experience for me.
I got a few other ideas regarding what track we can use next. How about one of OCR's recently-released stuff? One which really can use singing/lyrics or something like that? It doesn't need one which already has lyrics...
Another idea is to "borrow" a finished track from one of the upcoming OCR projects. You never know, lyrics may even add more creativity...

Man, I wish I would've seen this BEFORE it ended. Seriously, I'd like to enter next time. I don't sing that much but I've been told I have a good voice, so why not? It won't hurt to try.
Congrats Hale and DA! :D

Yo, Malcos, could I suggest something? One thing that turned me off about this month was the genre of the source tune. I mean, I know that different people are going to be turned off by different genres, because they might have vocal styles that would better suit one type of music and not another. Anyway, the point of this post: if it would be possible, next month, could we try to find something like, say, rock? I think it could open up a whole new level, branching out into different vocal styles with a different genre.

Exactly. A rock-oriented remix would literally...rock!

Well, I guess it takes a while to start up VOCRs, finding the right source tune and all... Because it's been like... a month since the last one ended... Let's shoot for May!

I really hope round 3 starts sometime this month...I got medical finals in May and I won't be free until June 9, which means that I'll be unable to participate. :(

Hey sorry to bug everyone in this thread about this but does anyone here happen to have my entry for VOCR 1 called "Movin'". I forgot to include it on the CD's I burnt before I left the country for this study abroad program I'm on now so if someone could get it to me somehow I'd really appreciate it...
Thanks

A rock remix would definitely be bitchin'. I also agree that it would be nice to mix things up as often as possible for this contest in order to attract new competitors and keep things fresh.

Yeah, you're already good with the rock-ish genre... *listens to Summertime again*
