Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time 'Pachelbel's Ganon'
I love it. It sounds very similar to DJP's Sonic ReMix entitled "Love Hurts". But that's a good thing. This mix has a goodness all of its own, though. It warrants downloading and repeated listening. Excellent arrangement. I do enjoy the second half a bit better for some odd reason (probably due to the addition of the very realistic sounding acoustic guitar---complete with fret noise in the proper locations), but that's not to say that the first half isn't excellent. Lots of subtleties that the MP3 format can't do justice to.
It's a DJP mix, so it is required downloading!

Dang that name! I clicked on this just for the heck of it, and I couldn't even remember any Gannon music, and then he goes and says its a song of time/Zelda's lullaby mix. I also agree it does sound like love hurts at the beginning. Just wanna say I like this one a lot, go DJP!

It does sound like love hurts towards the beginning. I didn't really recognize anything familiar until about 1:40 or so. Though it is kind of a misnomer, it's a very smooth flowing, quiet, peaceful song. I like it.

This remix is off the hinges. I love it when that panflute jumps in there at 1:32. This piece sounds a little latin and jazzie. The drum beat is hip hop influenced, yet in a soft comfortating way. Throughout, you can hear the cello paving the way for the whole journey through this masterpiece. At 3:12 it winds down with the guitar and cello complimenting eachother. The only thing i would have liked to see was a few more scaled notes played on that last measure with the guitar. 'Pachelbel's Ganon', is one of djpretzel's best.
mmm.. me thinks djpretzel is jazzie.
I'm not even sure where to begin. All I can say is this, this entire remix totally kicks ass!

This IS DJP's best remix!
So freakin' great!
Wow...DJP strikes again. This is friggin' excellent. Where do I start? Very smooth, and easy to listen to. I loved the acoustic guitar in the last half of the song. Hell, I loved everything. Instead of reading my dumb review, go download the song. Right now. NOW!

.. wow. When I read the description, about how different it is from the original ... I wasn't sure I was going to like it. I decided to download it anyway.
I have to say, the song was great. It exceeded all my expectations, and I think this is one of the best Zelda 64 mixes out there. Excellent song. :D
EDIT: Wow ... I can't stop listening to this. :D It's so good, it's addictive!

Hey, it's not like anything he says can keep me from downloading his songs... I'm glad I got this one, because it rules.
The intro got me thinking of 60's pop, or rather 90's pop trying to sound like 60's pop (you know, as in Fastball and stuff). That's probobly due to the cello. This one's very cool sounding. I love how the theme, whatever it's called, played on the el. piano is integrated with jazzy soloing.
The accoustic guitar sounds convincing, but I could have lived without it...
BTW, am I the only one who hears a irritating glitch at 02:42? It could be something with my file. I can try and downloading again.

Whoah .. why is this a remix ? this deserves more to be one of those single-noted songs ! I mean .. you completely remade something out of two songs .. its inspiration .. this song isnt for purists, but for anyone who has ANY sort of musical taste.
Everything about this song is good .. the sound, the melody, chorus, instrument, quality, ambience, mood, sound, i just cant stop playing this anymore ..

Yes, very good to listen to on loop :) Nice and upbeat. Great job.
Just curious, what does it mean when the KBPS in winamp changes to all sorts of different numbers? I've seen it lots of times but never understood.

Just curious, what does it mean when the KBPS in winamp changes to all sorts of different numbers? I've seen it lots of times but never understood.
It's called variable bitrate. Different parts of the file are encoded at different bitrates, depending on the relative complexity of that section.

Whoa... I may be male, but I had MULTIPLE orgasms when hearing this song. It rocks all. Was gonna write a long review, but right now I'm speechless. I think I'm gonna listen to 'Love hurts' now, cause if it's anything like this mix I'll be a really happy man. Awesome shit, DJP.
I'll try and write up a better review in a bit, but right now I am too much in awe atm.

DJP, YOU DA MAN!! (this is for those who are mentally retarded and could not see that before hand)
I have to play Pachelbel's Cannon for my highschool band, and since then I can't get it outta my head. This song rocks. Now i'm hooked on Cannon more than ever. S'cuse me while I cure myself with some more of DJP's mixes.

DJP was waaaay too modest in the review response thingy. Plain and Simple: This song ROCKS! I happen to be a fan of Canon, having played 1st violin in an orchestra, and I like this piece better. You hear that Pachelbel?!? I LIKE THIS BETTER!!! So there...

Wow.
It's kind of odd as a Zelda remix since the keys are different, but in changing it, pretzel has created an entirely different sound to the song and it's AWESOME. It does sound a little like 'Love Hurts', but only because it has that electric organ(or piano ??) sound that the beginning (which I like a LOT). It's definitely not the funky beats of "Love" but an excellent song indeed.

What a great song to chill to. And the key change is also very cool; it works well for the genre. I also like the guitar playing the classic warp flute motif.
Another damn solid mix by the man himself. Thanks for writing such a great mix, DJP.

I know this is my second post on this thread, but just wanted to say the more I listen to it the more I like it. I've got to say, this is one of my favorites, and definitely the best DJP best mix, and one of the best overall, I've heard.
Edit: And Kawasaki, Media Player reports the song to be 1'36 for me as well, but it keeps playing on my computer until the end. I wonder why that is.

Because WMP sucks :P. Actually, it doesn't read VBR mp3s correctly, so it will play the whole song, but it doesn't report the time correctly.

Very nice...
I love the way this thing sounds...
At the beginning, you can almost picture Link charging in slo-mo towards Ganon for the final blow or something.
You know, where they usually freeze the camera, show the look on everyone's face, shows the look of victory, then lets him finish him?
I love that feeling this mix gives me...
It's almost as if you made an entirely different song...
Once again, very nice... :D

Wow. I don't post much here, but I had to put my 2 cents in. Being the heathen I am, I've never played Zelda 64....
*hides in the corner*
.... However, as other people have stated, this song isn't just for video game purists, but for anyone with an appreciation for music. Pachabel's Canon has alway been one of my favorite classical pieces, and the way it is used in this piece is great.
2 thumbs way up!! Great work djpretzel!!!

I know I already wrote a review, but upon listening to this mix again, I noticed something neat that I felt I had to comment on.
I really like how you didn't change the notes to Zelda's theme at all, but popped it over a minor chord progression by merely changing the scale degrees. Genius.

I really like this remix. The warmth of the cellos (MP3 sucks though, i want wav!), the entire mood of the piece, the combination of the electronic sounds, like the "love hurts" piano, to the acoustic gutiar, the entire piece just flows so well. IMO, DJP's best work yet, and an amazing OCR.

I have one word to say: WOW. This remix blew most of my Zelda mixes away. It was INCREDIBLE! DJP, you are extremely skilled and I hope that you will make other fantastic remixes like this one. Was that also a pan flute I heard in that song? Anyways, my two cents in on this one, because this mix, compared to all of my Zelda mixes, stands out and I almost always listen to this one. DJP you ROCK!

I enjoy the mix as a whole, which is impressive given it's a compilation. Many compilations (and normal songs for that matter) are only interesting in parts, but this one stands well from start to finish, with a soothing and somewhat haunting mood (due to the pipe-like sounds). Great work on the guitar btw!
This is my 2nd favorite mix by DJP, With his Crono Revival Day being his best, IMO:)

I like this style of remix better then some of the more fx oriented ones: The music is the focus, with the zelda theme not a crutch but what seems to be more an inspiration for the rest of the piece. The opening is downbeat, and the rest of of the peice is mysterious and relaxed, making the tie into zelda's whistle theme excellent. Extremely Recomended

After listening to this mix again for the first time in a few months, this mix is probably one of my favorite on the site. actually i think you could easily bill this as original material. the only similarities are the heavily altered lullabye melody and the beginning of the guitar solo. very original and very nice.

I can't believe I downloaded this and then forgot about it until it showed up on my list again.
I love this to death. This is so well put-together, played, everything. I love the interpretation of the lullaby and everything. It's moving and beautiful in this way I can't even really describe. I can't stop listening to this! This is fantastic work and I love how original it is too. It makes recognizing the original melody all that more satisfying and amazing when it's interpreted in such a creative and wonderful way.
Amazing. Word on the professional/original sound - the people I've showed this to so far can't believe it's a remix from video game music.

THIS IS MOST LIKELY THE BEST VIDEO GAME REMIX IN EXISTANCE. This is one song that djp puts it all together to bring us what video game music should be. Yes, there's the techno junk that I have a natural aversion towards, but the song is neither relient on it nor does it stand out from any of the other instruments djp uses. You just got to love this, folks. The songs remixed themselves are so tightly wrapped up with original pieces that djp could probably publish this without nintendo knocking on his door... 8/8 :D

Hey...feels nice to just have the music hit your ears...
AHEM!*
This mix, OH HOW I ADORE IT! So wonderful...so true...I'd even go so far as to say the chorus-line sounds..."airy". Yeah....air-dried...
Anyway, this one sits just below my current favorite, "Love Hurts". Maybe over time, my tastes will grow onto this one better. But until then, "Love Hurts" is my main tune. They are both from my favorite DJ--and that is currently DJ Pretzel. Keep this stuff up, man...just...keep it flowing, I NEED more remixes like this!
Final verdict... MY SCORE-- 9.4/10

djp should've gone the extra mile and added "in D" to the end.
i like the mellowness of the piece - it's peaceful, yet melancholy solemnity embodies the somber aspect of the zelda legacy.
or looking at it from another perspective, it captures the tragedy of ganon (assuming there is any) - - ganondorf, who we assume was once good, has been marred by the desire for power...or something like that...
okay..maybe the piece doesn't lend itself to that at all - i was just trying to come up with something unique..
anyway - the blend of the melodies, instruments, harmonies - very well done. i hope to be able to do half as well as this someday.

This piece is absolutely fantastic. The melodies are beautiful, especially the edited Zelda's Lullaby one, and everything else seems to fall right into place, perfectly. I don't know what other adjectives to use than beautiful, fantastic and touching. And Beautiful.

When I got to this site, I figured this would all be rocking, dancing mixes. That's a cool idea and all, but what about those times when I just want to chill out and relax? That's where songs like this come into play. This is a nice smooth, relaxing remix that would almost be depressing if I had something to be depressed about.
Note: If you have recently been dumped, don't listen, as it will most likely make you sad. This song just has a very calm, sad sort of mellowness to it. It almost sounds like something out of "Gladiator" with the wing instruments used in the song. I don't know what happens in the game when you hear this song, but I kept picturing a death scene or something sad.
That said, don't think this is just a mega sad song. It isn't. I am just saying it can be. The melody is easy to interpret anyway you like. Overall, this is a beautiful remix that leaves me in awe of the talent that this OCR has brough to the internet.
This is an awesome remix; But I have one little issue with it...
Why is it called "Pachelbel's Ganon?" Not anywhere in this remix did I hear anything resembling Pachelbel's Canon. Not in the chord progression, or the notes.
To me, this is just an emotional jazzy remix of Zelda's Lullaby, which is great; I just don't hear Pachelbel's Canon.

To me, this is just an emotional jazzy remix of Zelda's Lullaby, which is great; I just don't hear Pachelbel's Canon.
During the chorus, there is indeed a cello playing the melody from Pachelbel's Canon. It's not the same chord progression, obviously, but it "works" as a faint counter-melody regardless. You have to listen pretty close to pick it out, but it's there.
During the chorus I hear the cello playing C, Bb, C, Bb, C, Ab, Eb, Bb... :?:
I'm not sure why I love this mix. It could be the fact that Pachebel's Canon is one of my favorite songs, it could be the fact that I love Zelda's Lullaby, or maybe the electrical classical feel that I've only ever heard in this song. Most likely, it's a combination of the above three, a fast-paced hip-hop classical jazz thing that can only be described if you hear it. Regardless, this mix has a great feeling to the music, all the instuments sound good, and it's very emotional. What can I say, but: Good job, DJ, you've created one of my favorite mixes on the entire site! Some people may not like it, but I love it (which, now that I've checked most of the reviews, doesn't seem true). I like the chorus part of Pachebel's Canon in the beginning that is very evident, but it's there later, just harder to find.

When I first heard about this site through the Dirty Mario Remix flash, I went pretty much directly to the Zelda section and downloaded everything there. For some reason Pachelbel's Ganon didn't catch my sight until later, because I was mostly looking for familiar tunes, and I only gave it one listen until I gave a friend them all, and he told me Pachelbel's Ganon was his favorite. Yeah.
I've been quite addicted to it ever since, about four months later I'm still listening to it almost on a daily basis. It's just the epitome of everything great. A few weeks ago me and the above friend were at a Best Buy, I think it was and we heard the song playing in the stereo section. I don't think the song can get enough credit.
Unfortunately, most people I give it to, they put it down quite easily saying that it sounds nothing like Pachelbel's Canon and just disregard it like that. 'Tis a shame.

I’m also guilty of not paying my respects to what is one of my all time, if not favourite OC ReMixes. This track has been out for almost a year and I got it pretty much on release.
It’s an absolutely beautiful example of what you can do with allot of creative know-how. The two themes work so well together, and talk about your killer chorus.
All the instrumentation is this is first rate, I still can’t believe how good it sounds. It’s just one of those tracks that will always have a special place to me.
Oh, and I was going to review this, I’m simply taking advantage of a wonderful coincidence. :)

Heh heh, this IS pretty sweet stuff. I never checked it out before, cuz I'm a bastard like that, but I must say this is good stuff. I think it's the concept of combining all these songs and changing them and such and the way they were pulled off that makes this song so awesome. The main problem I have is 1:53-2:13 where the piano and guitar are sort of dilly-dallying around. They both pull off these very soloistic runs and things at the same time and it sounds very dissonant. Other than that, this is a great mix that really is a part of OCR's history.

Beautiful. One word. That's all I can say. This actually means alot considering I rarely use this word. When I hear something good I usually say "nice", "sweet", "tight", "catchy", but this this is just in a league of its own. I mean, I never wanted to play an instrument, but hearing the first cello, made me want to play one and play this part of the song(I haven't learned how to it just made me want to learn). Oh man, it's so emotional I love it. To me, it's a relaxing, kind of depressing, piece of tune. It adapts to so many different stories and scenes. Like you can picture somebody that just broke up with their mate, and their sitting on a bench in the middle of a park, with a light shower falling from the sky. Truly a masterpiece. Of course, it has that awesome chorus that makes it a mysterious tune, and makes me want to be a tenor instead of a bass so I can hum along...I can go on and on and on about this song. Excellent job djpretzel, I recommend making more remixes with this atmosphere.
I think it's a nice song. Nice for... like... sleeping... or... whatever. Homework... I'm ranting. Good-bye!

Hey there! I've been collecting Zelda mixes for a while and this one is beautiful. It reminds me of a hotel I stayed at once. It just sounds, to me, to be that big balcony overlooking this huge stone fountain at night. Beautiful..just beautiful.
I rarely make posts on this site. You can tell next to my name. However, when I am compelled to post, it is usually for a good reason. And I can think of no better reason than to compliment what I can only consider to be a masterpiece.
I noticed another poster mentioned the tragic story of Ganondorf. There is a rather tragic story behind him, told most poignantly in the newest installment of the Zelda franchise, "Wind Waker." An excerpt from a speech he gives near the end of the game...
"My kingdom lay in a vast desert. When the sun was high, a scorching wind blew across our lands. And when the moon rose high into the night sky, a chilling gale ravaged our homes. No matter when it came, the wind always brought the same thing... death. But the wind that blew across the fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin...
I... coveted that wind, I suppose."
This piece is a perfect companion to his story, in a beautiful, melancholy way. Nothing in excess, nothing in absence. Every piece fits together into a beautiful puzzle that is matchless among its kind. Good job, Dj Pretzel. :)

After having listened to all of the Overclocked Remixes, I have safely concluded that this is my favourite. If perfection could be achieved musically, this would be very close to it. I love the seamless fusion of the electric piano, the violoncello, the hip-hop beat, and the beautiful melodies. This is an arrangement that can easily send a man into insouciance before the half-point of the song. David has done some splendid work here, and I applaud it fervently!

Cool, I really like this unusual combination.... the electric piano and percussion combination really reminds me of David Usher... I haven't heard Canon, so I don't know what that bit's all about, but this is a great ReMix. :D
Edit: Okay, maybe I really should finish listening to a song before I review it :p Anyways, I love that guitar solo starting at about 1:54. especially the part at 2:10...it's very very good... the ending is also really good... quite haunting actually. :)

At some point I felt like I had downloaded all the interesting remixes of the games I know. Then I decided to download this just because the title caught my eye. You see, Pachelbel's Canon is one of my favorite songs. :P
I don't regret downloading this, it's one of my very favorite mixes on this site. It's so beautiful, especially the parts at 1:30 and 2:30 - and the latter gets even more lovely when some other instrument joins at 2:52. The ending is pulled of nicely, it doesn't just fade out or end as if someone just cut the last part off.
This song is dripping with emotion. It's somehow sad, and at the same time, not sad at all. It makes me think of a pink-purpleish sunset. Look at me, I'm getting all poetic while listening to this.
Gorgeous.

I like the phone ring, it adds a nice texture to the song. Oh wait, that was someone's real phone ringing, not the song! Hmm... a good phone ring would fit well in this song...

If you're down, listen to this song, It will give your life meaning again. There's no other way to describe it. It's that good.
The different chord progression was eay to recognize, while at the same time it's relatively easy to hear the original in there. Given the mood of the song (which is a mood of its own, there is nothing that could produce something quite like it), I think it perfection. Trying to imgine the original in there doesn't seem to fit as well. A good call by DJP.
Easily one of my favorite songs by who is quickly becoming my favorite artist, a definate accomplishment of truly marvelous proportions.

Of the 100+ remixes I've heard on this site, I'd rate this right at the top - stunningly beautiful and clever use of the Pachelbel theme with the lovely Zelda's lullaby melody. I still get goosebumps even after hearing it a hundred times. Congratulations on this site too DJP, a remarkable achievement.

When I was sifting through all the OoT Remixes I came across the Pachelbel Ganon song. At first I thought it would be a mix of Ganondorf's theme so I thought "Oh nice! Someone remixed it finally!" And I went to download it without reading the review.
Well... When I heard the song I fell in love with it. I've been listening to this remix on repeat for the last day, and I don't know why but it just brings tears to my eyes. It's just one of those songs that inspires me. Because of it I've been able to produce a lot of new artwork and my writing has improved. It's so beautiful I can't even describe.
I woke up this morning and put on my headphones, and immediately started it up. Now my boyfriend can sometimes barely hear what I listen to, and as soon as I turned it on he could hear (faintly) the pachelbel ganon theme playing. He turned to me with a groan, "Dell... Not that song AGAIN.. you listened to it on repeat all day yesterday!" I was immediately embarrassed and turned it down, but by no means did I take it off repeat!! I Love this song.. I've sent it to all my friends AND posted it in my journal giving thanks to DJpretzel for making it. I'm a fan now.. I truly am.

Wow... This is what I call a GREAT remix. From this point on, all remixes should be just as great as this one. I downloaded this song a while back and it was favorite from the beginning and it still is. This song is, by far, my FAVORITE song I have ever heard and I'm not kidding. It surpasses all that crap on the radio and that's pretty hard to do since this song has no words. That's just how great this song is. Keep up the great work, DjPretzel!

Very good! Like everyone else had said before, sounds like love hurts at the begining, but then takes on a whole new sound on its own.
I like how it eases down at about 3:12 with the guiter as well. I love how it all flows together. Bravo!

Nice. I really got into this remix. At first I was having a hard time picking out the parts that were the OoT songs, but once I did it was like a whole new way of looking at them. I didn't feel bored of any particular part, which is what I look for in remixes or songs in general.. I can't stand when a song is repetitive. So, in conclusion, I enjoyed 'Pachelbel's Ganon' very much. :)

The first time I heard this one, I just thought "WTF?! Where's the Ganon theme? Actually, where are any of the themes?!" Then I read what djp actually wrote, and suddenly I could pick them out distinctly.
This track has a somber, dark mood to it, but the woodwind-ish Zelda's Lullaby somehow adds a feeling of hope to it. All in all, it combines to make one friggin KICKARSE remix. And I'm a big fan of the original Zelda themes, moreso than of the remixes. So that's saying something.

I love that EP in the intro
How come you fools can't recognize this song? FOOLS!
This song's got a great name! Clever, I would have never though of something like that
When the chorus comes in singing Zelda's Lullaby thats where I really fall in love then moves onto a guitar solo, I wish I was this skilled!!
I just think you should have the rest of Zelda's lullaby in here as well as like another verse or something, not in the chorus though.
Anyways, Great Job djp! Keep it up!!

This is too catchy. WAY too catchy! :D I think I've listened to it like 5 times in row. Really nice work all around, especially with the melody adaptations. I'm really digging the cello DJP used in this...it sounds very familiar to me, but I can't place who it's from. Some Roland/Edirol product perhaps? And it's strange, I recognize half the instruments in this song too, like the classical guitar and the hi-hat samples.
Well, it makes no difference either way. Excellent job all around, and very listenable. Great job on the mixing, too. Everything sounds clear and professional. Despite the lack of Ganon's theme, I'll give this a 10 outta 10. D

I have pretty much the entire content of this website on my MP3 player. Whenever I make a 70-minute CD-R to introduce people to OCR, this tune is the last song on it. The last song is always the one you wouldn't want to put anywhere else because it would make any other piece look bad. Pachelbel's Ganon is the reason I fell in love with this site and I don't think it has been surpassed yet. This one is the best in show and bow in reverence of it.

this mix is the reason i found OCRemix 3 years ago. i was searching for Ganon on google, and i kept seeing "pachelbel's Ganon" popping up. I thought i'd see what it was all about, and wow! What can I say that hasn't already been said? How can I express what I think of this song.
"Too beautiful for words" comes to mind. I'm absolutely in love with this. From beginning to end.
I'm 21, 6'3" tall 240lb ex-football player, and this song made me cry. Yeah. Out loud. Couldn't stop. Played it everywhere I went for a week straight, and still remains on every mix CD I burn.
Really, I'm trying to think of something educated and "judge-like" to say, like "the beat transitions nicely from strong to soft at around 1:50," but even that won't do this justice.
Beat, instruments, tone, flow, POWER, all are perfect.
Maybe not my favorite "rocking out" song, but I would say that this is hands down the best song I've ever heard in my life.
And yeah, post 1, made an account just to share my feelings.

Even the second time I did not enjoy it.
And I think I realized why. There is nothing wrong with your song, except for the fact that you really didn't do much.
You didn't decimate the chord progression at all. You may have given them a bit of your own style and flair, but they still remain. Though you changed the melody, for me anyways, the song still remains the same. I have a very powerful ear
Sorry, had to respond here because this was amusing; from a certain perspective, if I respond to comments like these, I look petty and overly defensive. This post in particular implodes upon itself via its own devices, needing no real assistance on my part. But sometimes people are just so inarguably wrong that not correcting them could give OTHER people the wrong idea and spread FUD.
I'm not going to defend the piece on subjective grounds, but rather on objective grounds: if you specifically think this chord progression in any way resembles the chord progression from the original, your "powerful ear" still needs yet more power. The melody is the same, the progression entirely different. If anyone else doubts this, I can post objective evidence, namely MIDI files, indicating the discrepancy, but frankly, I think it's so awfully self-evident that even those with a "weak and ignominious ear" could hear the difference.
In other words, I'm not calling anyone out on not liking this piece - that's a matter of opinion. But if someone's gonna say the chord progression is largely unaltered, that's an egregiously incorrect and easily disproven claim.
KyleJCrb
06-09-2005, 05:26 PM
Next, don't try to be all superior by telling me my ear is not powerful. Don't ever look down on people you don't know becuase you honestly don't know anything. I am graduating Piano with my diploma soon. I play the saxophone. Edwin E. Gordon's ear music tests rank me in the 99.9% of all human beings. Not to mention I have actually written my OWN songs.
Why do people try to flaunt their education to prove a point? I know I'm never impressed by what people claim to know. And what's to say that DJP hasn't written his own stuff?
It's been awhile since I've listened to this song, but for one of the older pieces on the site, it definitely stands out as one of the better songs of the time period. I see no reason to bash it.

Honestly I couldn't care less.
You are right, I am wrong.
Oh and to that person?
I means 99.9 percentile. So no it's a good thing.
And to the other person. I just wanted to show that I'm not a dumbass. I can't respect someone who thinks that they can take down other people. I was just backing up my claim.
Then back it up with evidence, not claims of being some super-slick and extensively educated guru. That's not backing anything up, that's flaunting credentials we can't even verify. Do you see the difference, perhaps?
Speaking of backing things up, I decided I'd help you out. You're clearly operating under the impression you've offended me by not liking my mix. You haven't. After 65 mixes, some of which even I don't like, I'm well-prepared for things not to sit well with people.
However, what does offend me is how awfully, terribly wrong you are, and how you're insisting on invoking some hoohaa education and having amazing ears, when this is a very clear matter which can be investigated quite easily without resorting to name-dropping or bragging. This is where I think I can help you.
 here is a helpful diagram: http://www.ocremix.org/etc/zelda64_pachelbel_notes/zelda64_pachelbel_comparison.png
It illustrates the respective melodies and chord progressions for the portion of the piece in question, and even has a helpful color-coded legend.
Also, here is the electric piano part, covering chords and melody, from my mix:
 http://www.ocremix.org/etc/zelda64_pachelbel_notes/zelda64_pachelbel.mid
as compared to the original:
 http://www.ocremix.org/etc/zelda64_pachelbel_notes/zelda64_original.mid
You didn't decimate the chord progression at all. You may have given them a bit of your own style and flair, but they still remain.
Hopefully you now realize the above statement is wrong, not only in terms of noun-pronoun agreement, but on a musical level.
I am graduating Piano with my diploma soon. I play the saxophone. Edwin E. Gordon's ear music tests rank me in the 99.9% of all human beings. Not to mention I have actually written my OWN songs.
I'd ask for my money back. Also, rather than TELLING us you've written your OWN songs, SHOW us - link us to them. This connects back to the whole concept of "backing things up" - see, we've come full circle!
In summation, hopefully this diagram and these MIDI files assist you in some way. I don't mind people criticizing my music one bit, and I do so myself so it'd be hypocritical to be hypersensitive, but I *do* mind FUD, and I do mind fallacy being defended by those with nothing to offer as evidence except their egos.

I've been wondering why this track's been getting so many reviews these past few days. Not that it doesn't deserve them, of course, but it caught my attention. Now I know.
metal conker: You really should think before you post, or your name will soon become metal conk-head.
Enough said. ^_^
Guhhh...I feel like I'm theory class again. Why must you do this to me, djp?? KHAAAAAAAN!
Uh, anyway...while I sided with djp based on initial listens, I decided to go ahead and break it down anyway. I might've ended up completely wrong, but this is what I came up with. (Warning: long and complicated post ahead. Skip to the  to get to the important part.)
 Here's a diagram I made with Anvil Studio (and a little help from Ms. Paint) to make it easier to read the actual notes. (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~david-hsu/misc/compare2.PNG)
First of all, I decided to switch the focus of the comparison to the segment where the melodies (circled in bold red) come in. The accompanying chords are encased in a delightful blue.
Now, those familiar with music theory should immediately recognize both pieces are obviously in completely different keys (exactly which ones they are we'll discuss later). So, let's play some match-up, shall we? In the original piece, the melody starts at a D, jumps to its apex at a high D, then after some intervening passing tones, falls down to a B. In djp's version, the equivalent segment starts at a C, goes up to the B-flat, then lands comfortably on a G. So immediately, we can acknowledge that conker is right in claiming the melody has been changed...the original goes up a full octave to reach the high note, while djp modifies the interval to a minor 6th.
Now let's turn our attention towards the sections within the blue perimeters. In Pachelbel's Ganon, the chord in the left hand is a very obvious C minor tonic (C-Eb-G), matching the high C note in the melody. In the original piece, we see the notes in the accompaniment trace out a F-C-F-A-D-E. If you're a good little music student, you'll know that you arrange those notes a bit so that they're in consecutive thirds, resulting in D-F-A-C-E. And BAM...a D-minor (with extra 7th and 9th extensions), which corresponds with the high D.
But wait! Does this mean djp is WRONG? Has he lost the battle of ears, falling into the rest of the inferior 99.9% of the population while conker emerges the victor?? Don't worry, dear ReMixers, there's still hope for our beloved choker-of-presidents.
( Here's where the fun comes in)
Let's go back to those key signature thingamabobbers I was talking about earlier. We've already established the original goes to a B after the high D. But does it stop there? Oh no...it decides to take it to the XTREEEEM and drop even lower, to the G (as indicated by the dotted lines). So we have a G, an B, and a D...put them together and what have you got? Bippity-boppity-G major! In djp's arrangement, we can tell from the main notes (C-Eb-G-Bb) that it's obviously in C-minor. To be put it simply, this means he completely decimated the original major key, as promised, and replaced it with a minor substitute. In this key signature, the C-minor chord acts as a simple tonic, while in the original key, G-Major, the D-minor would function as...well, I don't even know. Is there a theory major in the house?
Anyway, in conclusion, while for a moment the two do indeed coincide, one quickly realizes their differences in the context of their respective pieces as a whole. Something that you might not realize, conker, is that just because you can play the original melody of a song over a chord progression doesn't mean it's the same as the original...the fact that every chord consists of three tones means that there are an almost limitless number of possibilities for any given sequence of notes.
Of course, like I mentioned, everything I just said might be completely wrong. If there happen to be any PhD's reading this, feel free to thoroughly slap me for any, errr..."Fouled Up" Disinformation I've spread. But regardless of who ends up having the last laugh...

Thanks; sounds good to me. The melody isn't EXACTLY the same - I should have added in an "almost" due to the noticeable interval change. I was also only referring to the first half of the phrase, the second half having nothing to do with the original at all. To me, "almost exactly" means "easily recognizable", which in this instance I think it is. This is why the helpful diagram qualified the statement.
When you said that there is a G major chord in the middle of the progression, honestly, how is this "decimating" the chord progression. Though the chord is not exactly transposed, sometimes a nice subsitute spicens up the remix, and that it does.
It's not just ONE substitution for one chord, it's the whole progression, friend. It's different. Whole darn thing. It's not rhythmically the same, either, I might add. Basically, take away the melody, and you'd have no real clue it was a Zelda mix. You really need to come to grips with this and stop arguing back with weak statements that only address a SINGLE chord. The ENTIRE progression is changed. Any music theory class should have taught you enough to know this, or even just looking at the MIDI files.
Now, if you wanna make a criticism like "you dumbed down the chord progression" or "I like the original chord progression better", those are both FINE opinions. But if you try to insist it's very similar and that very little was changed, you come off as laughable from a factual perspective, and still don't seem to get that more than one chord has been changed, even when the files are right in front of you. Let me repeat: the files are right in front of you. Listen to them. Look at them. Compare them. PLEASE.
So what if I dont have strong english skills? Doesn't mean I am not right here. And all you ass lickers out there trying to hold your faith to DJP, I dont care what you say. I really dont. DJP can hold his own grounds, and he's doing a fine job of it.
I'm not worried that we don't understand what you're trying to say, but I *am* worried that you're not understanding us, although I'm not sure how much clearer I can make things. I posted the two MIDI files, I posted the chart, you can see for yourself, the progression is clearly NOT the same. It's not that one chord has been "substituted", it's that ALL chords have been substituted, and the rhythm altered as well. If you want to spend any more time convincing anyone that you're right, explain how a chord progression that shares not a SINGLE chord in common with the original is somehow only a small change.
Anyways, here you go.

Well, thanks for at least showing us you're not some entirely crazy person who's never even touched a musical instrument. A couple recommendations:
 Better recording equipment. A $10 tape recorder from Radio Shack would be an improvement.

ok then, you were right on one thing, and I was right on the other
Your original statement that hardly anything was changed and that I "really didn't do much" was the only real point of contention for me, and I'm glad you admit now that this is incorrect. In the future, since you now know that you can be wrong about something, I recommend not boasting about being in the 99.9th percentile of anything or touting degrees, but instead arguing your case based on its merits.
As for being "on your ass" - $10 from radio shack LITERALLY could do better. The comment was sarcastic but also very true. I recommend asking around our ReMixing forum for assistance, because even with very limited resources, better results can be produced, and have been.

Regardless of my not-even-close-to-perfect in most forms of artistic creation, I tend to be overly critical and analytical about all forms of art, merely because I personally prefer constructive criticism to compliment. If anything below sounds like an insult, apologies in advance.
By far one of my favorite works by you. Having puns in remixes is always fun, but having a pun that actually DOES describe the song, rather some mere alliteration or rhyme that doesn't match the style at all, is especially interesting. The mood of the song and chord progressions are so very different from the original, but that's what makes a good remix so much better, in my opinion--originality. The mixture of electronica and natural sound samples (which are all of very good quality in this) was cleverly done. One of the best I saw was combining the natural flute-like instrument with the electronica, airy-feeling instrument, playing the same melody in unison (Holy Voice, or something?). Kind of like two brothers that are nothing alike coming together. Okay, that was cheesy. But really, everything blended and meshed together quite nicely, and the rhythmic figures didn't get tired.
The early introduction of the fuzzy electronica along with the entrance of the "Canon" theme on the cello was a well done necessity. Kind of more of an easy-in than a break-in, and bringing in the light percussion pattern that early was nice, too. More on the originality, the change in time signature of "Zelda's Lullaby" was quite well done. Nifty, even. It matched a Canon pattern through, yet didn't get repetative, as sad arrangements on Pachelbel's sometimes do. The nylon guitar interlude was unexpected, but pleasant. Triplets inserted into a style with figures like these are almost unheard of, and yet it was so...fitting, here.
Man, I need to expand my vocabulary.
I definetly liked the chord structures. It completely deviated from the original in terms of theory, yet with mood, remained a rhythmic solemn, which is difficult to do when taking a lullaby and synthesizing it. Dandy fine.

I love how calming this song is. i woke up in the morning once craving to hear this song....and I didn't even know the name of it. I went through all of my zelda remixes until I found it, and then put it on repeat and went back to sleep. I absolutely love this song.

How have I ignored this mix in my playlist for so long!? DjP...You really outdid yourself on this one. I put it on a mix and have been playing it at work. That is until the boss man told me no more of my music... Yeah. That's right. People at subway enjoy listening to your mixes, along with the rest of the OCR crew. I'm pleased there are mixes as beautiful as this one. A Pleasant alternative to listening to country...*Sigh* There needs to be a OCR Radio Station! And this song needs to be played hourly!

This is a beautiful representation of musical talent. I cannot describe the mood that music such as this instills in me. I find myself unable to describe the appreciation I have for this mix.
The alterations made from the original melody were nothing less than brilliant. The source material is good, but this ReMix, to me, stands out as something else. Something better than great. Astronomical, perhaps? I find that this ReMix contains the best of both inspirations; the source material AND Pachelbel's Canon. Quite elegant and refined, indeed.
Again, I cannot express the appreciation I have for this fine piece of art. In the sugar-coated version, "Nothing short of excellent".
I personally feel this is one of your best works, DJP.

It's a really relaxing song, not really busy; at the same time, it has a bit of a substance to it, not really simplistic. I appreciate the title theme being incorportated into a remix. It's usually one of the more ignored things... not many people I know really listen to the title, or watch it, from all of the people I've met.
I love the sounds and tones incorportated, so many to express notes that someone would be familiar with, but still, with a nice balance of all of the additional parts too, while not cancelling the base song out, don't fade into the background. It manages to deviate from the original, but take on it's own sort of feeling as well.
I'm quite guilty of relistening to this song many times over, It's not something that really gets annoying quickly. It's definetly one of the best songs -- remixes -- that I've heard for a while. It's obvious that thought was put into the composition. It's definetly one of my favorites.
Of all the wonderful remixes on this site, this one still holds a place in my heart as my favorite. This piece was what made me decide to join the forums here.
I really can't describe how I first felt when I listened to the song. As a fan of Classical and game music alike, this creativly named, relaxing piece still to this day remains my very favorite.

Breathless... that's the one word that I must say that this remix has left me... It's nowhere near what I was expecting with a Ganon song, but... dear God, the music is as free-flowing as the rivers of time themselves... It's just a smooth, beautiful transition that moves through the very essence of my soul... by all means, keep up the excellent work...

OK, I am very, very new to the forums and the website but I must say that this is already one of my favorite pieces. Like others have already said the emotions that this piece conjurs up inside me are undescribable. I enjoy listening to this piece over, and over again. This truly is a masterpiece.
Of all the music I have ever listened too, I cannot recall any other work that has moved me as much as this piece has. Keep up the great work!

Pachelbel's Ganon? Hahah! That's rather witty. As said before, Clearly some of your best work, DJP. Very relaxed. Makes me think of the title screen again. It's much different then the songs alone, yet similar enough to be within the game and not sound out of place. Brilliant.

This is my #1 favorite OC Remix of all time.
I've been going to OC Remix for the music for many years now (though only recently did I join the forums), but this is the one that's had the greatest impact on me. Not only is it a great remix (that's a given!), but it really brings me back to when my friends and I at the UW dorms the first year would much more constantly listen to OCRemix. Brings back lots of great memories listening to it, not even related to OoT. In fact, this remix was one of the main reasons I decided to play the game in the first place.
Definately a staple of my OCR playlist; such a different style with this one. Zelda's Lullaby around 1:29 has such a different feel to it than it did in game. Love it 8)

This was the first song I heard from OverClocked Remix, thanks to a link from Zelda Dungeon several years back. I fell in love with it and thats what introduced me to video game remixes. It's beautiful and truly one of the best I've heard on the site.

12 pages of replies of your loyal legions showering you with praise? Lord Pretzel, you don't have to worry about offending the purists or anyone. Your mixes are all amazing, and have a world-altering quality to it. I think that Thou Canst Unite All The World With Thine Holy Melodies, O Father Divine.

I joined this site with the sole intent of praising DJPretzel for this amazingly masterful, haunting and beautifully arranged piece of music. I love the way you use Zelda’s Lullaby as a refrain in the chorus. It works so well and I’ve not stopped listening to this track since I downloaded it earlier on today. Magnificent. Thanks for the experience! I’ll definitely check out more of your stuff now :)!!.

I'm listening to this one as we speak. I love this song. The percussion itself was enough to make me fall in love with it. The organ samples and the melodies used here were excecuted with such percision and skill, this stands as one of my top ten songs on this site.

So, I'm new to the community here and I'm just now getting a taste of what a remix actually IS...
I think this is definitely one of the songs I can look up to and honestly try and dissect the meaning of the word "REMIX".
Wonderful job. This is something I would pay money to sit in a cafe and order expensive coffee while I listened in a euphoric state! :sleepdepriv:

I listen to this remix a lot. It's melancholy, euphoric, and nostalgic simultaneously. Brilliant work. I'd love to hear more like these. I think you made the Title Theme and Zelda's Lullaby meld together perfectly. I love it. So relaxing...
:banghead:
The intro reminds me of something and
I
Can't
Think
Of
What...
Anyway, I love this mix.
It so mellow, dreamy, hazy, foggy.
It's sort of like that edge of consciousness when you start to wake up from dreaming, and you can't tell what's reality and what's dream. Especially the echoing Zelda's Lullaby as the chorus, that was slick.

This is my favorite song on the site right now. I kind of wish that more mixes did this kind of thing - taking the melody and changing it so much that it's wholly separate from the original. The mix is no longer the theme with accoutrements and things put there to evoke nostalgia, but a truly original composition, a new song on its own terms. And this song is just wonderful - the other day I put it on repeat for quite awhile. The use of the theme is just... mindblowing. And the choices of instruments/tones/effects work perfectly. It all comes together to create something very melancholic, and very beautiful. The chorus, if you will, evokes a rather vivid kind of imagery for me, and the atmosphere of the track as a whole is unique and nearly tangible. It's quite an accomplishment. Very good work.

Though I'm not the first to do so, I've joined the site solely because I was so compelled to praise you for this amazing piece of music. It's been on repeat for the past several days, and I still find myself enjoying it ever bit as much as the first time. There's something really evocative about this piece that gets the artist in me thinking in new directions. It's soothing, a little melancholy, and wonderfully pensive. It's become my working music, keeping me going during crunch time in my project development (video game design) class.
I have to say that the chord progression you're using here is something I find myself actually favoring OVER the original. Exquisite work, a beautifully reflective piece that is wildly different from its roots without losing sight of them. Gorgeous, reflective, and soothing.
....and I was wondering if you would give me permission to play this song as a background piece for a drawing it inspired (emotionally, since it has nothing to do with zelda)? The picture is on deviantART, and it really needs this song to accompany it to evoke the proper mood. I've compromised by linking to the song itself (on the OC ReMix Youtube vid) and encouraging people to play it while viewing, but it would make me the happiest person on earth if you would grant me permission to embed the song. dA is a stickler for formalities when it comes to copyrighted material.
Anyway, even if you decline, I cannot thank you enough for sharing this amazing arrangement, and for the inspiration it's given me.
One of the best-named remixes on the site, for sure. It's really liberal, but the source melodies are pretty apparent, and the soundscape is good. I think i'd notice it more if I was more familiar with the original music, I think.
The idea to mix these tracks all together is pretty cool, and the execution is strong as well, I really like the guitar sample too. From the looks of things, this resonates with a lot of people too, so nice work. :-)
Recommended.
To be brief, this mix has become my favorite song. Not just from this site, but since the first time I heard it, it has been the one song that has been my absolute favorite. As in, no other song I own has captured my attention and my imagination as much as this one.
The two themes blend seamlessly and swirl together to create an intoxicating audio experience. Each time I listen to it, I hear things about it I hadn't caught before. Even after hundreds of listens, I still find an immense amount of gratification and wonder from this one song. After only about 9 or 10 months, it has become my top played song in itunes and I've listened to it even more in my car on cd. The total has come now to 364. The next most played song comes in at 276, and coincidentally it's one of yours; The Koan of Drums.
The only gripe I have at all is that on the sections where the bass drum restarts its beat, it's a bit overpowering through headphones. But really, it's so minor I only notice it when I'm paying attention.
I am a huge fan of your work, if it hasn't already been obvious and I always look forward to any works you may post.

I think it's funny how djp was pretty weary about the response he would get from this track. I don't think it is a stretch to say that this is one of the most popular mixes on OCR. Honestly, this is incredible stuff. Even after the excellent 'Love Hurts' this mix raises the bar yet another level. The mixing is superb, and the musical interpretation of the two sources is both fresh and nostalgic. A very compelling buildup and a rewarding ending make this most definitely worth a listen.
