View Full Version : Metal Gear Solid Movie Announcement!
I just happen to catch this article while looking at AnimeNation.com. Apparently, according to this Varity article (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117959052.html?categoryId=20&cs=1), an agreement between producer Michael DeLuca and Sony Pictures has finally been solidified to give the go ahead for an MGS movie. The good news is, Hideo Kojima, according to the article, will be executive producer. The better news, as of right now, Uwe Boll has NOT been mentioned as part of the project. So we are free of the Uwe for now.
So, what're your opinions on an MGS movie? Good, bad, indifferent?

Well the producer has been on a variety of projects (Dark City, Blow, Thirteen Days, Boogie Nights, Ghost Rider, Zathura, Blade II and many more) so this could definitely go either way. I think this has the best chance of being good because MGS itself is very cinematic and could easily translate onto film. As long as they don't restrict CODEC moments to just the talking head portraits.
So, who should play Snake? I say Hugh Jackman. This guy is a great actor, action star, bad ass, and with some costume design and makeup, he can look like Snake.

Apparently Kojima's choice for Snake is Viggo Mortensen. Not bad.
I originally wanted David Hayter to play the role, but then realised that he isn't really a good actor. Reads every line exactly the same.

It better not suck. I've been thinking about this for a while and if it does come out, it better win some shit. This is like Sony's best franchise out there.
But then again there already has been a MGS like movie. If anybody could remember "Escape from New York". Huh huh? Snake Plissken played by Kurl Russell. There was our early Snake. But then again it was one of Hideo Kojima's favorite films so uh..it's all good! That's what inspired him to do Metal Gear. So uh once again...it's all good!

It would be best not get your hopes up.You see, I originally thought that, too, but Kojima's games are so movie-like to begin with, I would think the translation would be (to some degree) much easier. At least in artistic vision. It's not like Picasso's trying to become a conductor, more like he's switching the paints he's using.
The issue I see would be if Kojima had to work with the equipment or treated himself as the "audience" rather than the camera. I would hope that he would have a very comfortable seat in front of the playback monitor.
As exec producer, he should.

I'm not going to get my hopes too high, as I know they'll be crushed when this comes out. If not, I'll just be that more entertained by the fact that it actually was a good movie. Does anyone else think David Hayter looks enough like Snake to pull it off? I mean, he's got the voice. :-P
If not Snake, then he looks a good deal like Otacon when he has glasses on.

I hope Raiden isn't in it, and if he is, I hope he's just a minor mention.
I would really like it if they make a lot of minor references throughout the entire film that pay homage to tiny minor situations and events in the game. That would rock.
And if they mentioned Zanzibar Hamsters.... hell... the movie would deserve an award.

Also, they totally need to refer to the audience at one point.

I honestly wonder if they could get an actor (Mortenson, Jackman, or other) to play Snake and dub over his voice with Hayter's without looking horribly B-Movie. Probably not, but it'd be cool if they could pull it off.
At any rate, /agree on the referring to the audience thing and, at the very least, Hayter needs to have a cameo in the movie somewhere. Maybe just some random tech-operator or something that gets to shout out "COLONEL!"

Lol, well if Segal were young again and still did aikido he wouldn't have been terrible. You know how much ass he used to kick if you've seen his older stuff (also evidenced by being, what, 8th dan?). Now that he got fat and switched to guns instead of martial arts, though, he sucks :(. Oh, and I never understood the whole idolizing Chuck Norris thing, so...
Anyway, my thoughts on the movie are like the ones before Doom came out: it *could* be good but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Even after I knew Doom was gonna be bad, I'm glad me and a bunch of friends decided to go see it -- I haven't laughed that hard in a theater since Alien vs Predator. If it looks ok, I'll probably see it...if it looks bad, I'll probably drink with some friends and then go see it with them :p.

Yeah...lol. I remember watching a "Cow & Chicken" episode and hearing his voice, I knew right away that it was the same voice actor for Colonel Campbell...after that I had to watch the rest of the episode :).
In an interview Campbell's voice actor said that he was in the movie "Biodome", it's some really small role...I think he's one of the Project Manager's employees and has only one line. During the interview he said he wasn't familiar with the Metal Gear Solid storyline, I don't think that he ever played the game, but he said that he was really intrigued by the weird lines that Campbell had in MGS2...those of you that have played it know what I'm talking about ;).

That's what I want to know. I like Hugh Jackman just as much as the next gal/guy, but as I've asked last time this came up, does he have to play EVERY macho main character?

Why does Snake need to be played by a known, big name actor?
The same reason they cast a big name actor for any movie: star power. In film theory, the actor (especially so with big stars) carries along with him/her everything else they have been involved in because the audience probably saw that last blockbuster they were in and adds an extra dimension to it. It's how Beat Takeshi's role in Brother could be so much harder-hitting, or to know what you can come to expect in a Jet Li movie beyond what's inherent from the genre. Sometimes the filmmaker will feel it better to go with a fresh face and not have to deal with all the extra "baggage" the actor is carrying with him/her, like in Superman Returns (though he was partially cast because of his resemblance to Christopher Reeve).
Anyway, for the MGS movie I agree with orual and think that the movie would be better with a no-name actor cuz it'll be easier to identify him just as Snake. Meh, anyway, we'll see how it goes :p.
