Lets say that the first WIP deadline isn't near yet... Hopefully that'll be enough info :P Don't be impatient yet, we still have a year to go probably.
P.S. Check the first post for track stats and WIP deadlines

Well that is totally different style from aj's one, it wouldn't be a problem unless they were in the same style. Also aluminum has totally minor'd stuff up, so they won't sound anything like each other.

Next version of mine will be slightly different to the previous one but it'll still be nothing like aluminum's. I'm personally not fond on his take on it although it interesting. Hopefully it's not my bias towards English spelling shining through.

Note: The forums were down for quite a while, almost all day, because the servers themselves were being moved to a new data center. Nothing will be any different that you can notice, but the back end performance just got boosted, and maintenance will be much easier.

Okay, for whatever it's worth, I got a WIP, I posted it in the audition forum. You won't recognize the boss theme right away, but it's a hard piece to arrange (with all the fast chromaticism), especially in the cinematic orchestral style I wanted to do. It's just the intro, so the boss theme will probably be more prominent in the rest of the piece :P

So we're losing at least one mixer, several WIPs haven't been updated since the fist WIP date, and we've been without solid leadership since the first few months of the year.
Howsabout we get this shit on the ball. Fishy, step up to the plate and help us get this thing moving along. Pocket, are you in or out? If you don't take your deadlines and quality standards seriously, then how can we? Seriously. It might be time for you to cut your losses. We need someone dedicated to this project to be it's coordinator, and you haven't been very dedicated. I would be tempted to blame our lack of activity on your total lack of leadership.
- Two songs (Prophet's too, honestly) are done.
- A handful are getting close.
- We've got two (maybe three or more) songs open.
- We need more mixers.
- We need a new WIP date in, say, late January as a final "get something recent up or get off the project" deadline for those who haven't updated since March-May.
- Several songs are not even close to par. Mine is one. And Pocket's is a prime example of another.
Get to work, everyone.

fratto's right. trust me when i say that projects that lose a strong sense of leadership almost never pan out. look at laproject, seiken denetsu (sp?),or even the pokemon project that i love so much - leadership was lost, and the projects went downhill (pokemon's down, but it's not out yet!).
find someone who's going to put in the time, and you'll find a project that's really chugging along again.

Well said. I really don't want to just say THIS IS MINE NOW, as its not my place to do so, but I would like to echo Fratto's concerns that pocket's not particularly taking charge and stuff is suffering as a result.
I don't like drama, but its something that needs adressing. I understand Pocket is probably very busy with other stuff in his life, but that shouldn't be an excuse for not taking charge, as someone without enough time to do so shouldn't have done so to begin with, especially if its wasting other peoples time.

I don't like drama either, but I especially don't like the number of times Pocket has flaked out on this project. We've had almost a year now and he has yet to do many things that could have been easily done in the first 4-6 months.
I also understand that you don't want to jump in and take over, but you are the co-coordinator and you've been the only sense of leadership since the very beginning. The fact that Pocket has all but abandoned the project makes you the only coordinator of any sort. You're the leader now, whether you feel like declaring it or not.

Coop, Tensei has some suggestions for you on the project boards about possible cheap/free options. If none of those work and you're open to the idea, I'm confident that someone else can take your arrangement and apply their skills and software to your work. The arrangement would be all you and someone else can jump in with their sounds on a midi of yours or something. I'd hate to lose you from the project due to Pocket's miscommunication on where your sounds would be last year.
What songs are open now? The tracklist here and on the forums don't match up
That would depend on how many of these extremely outdated WIPs get dropped from the project. RK, for example, has a great start on the boards that hasn't been updated since the first WIP date. After we get our leadership sorted out, then decisions can be made as to what songs will be available again.

Actually, it would be Fishy who was behind that miscommunication when I joined. avaris sent me a PM first seeing if I wanted to join, then he/she forwarded my response to Fishy. I was then told by the Fish-man, that anyone with remixes on OCR was accepted without question, and not to worry about it ("it" being what I told avaris/Fishy about my setup in that response PM).
As for project, I'm not fond of the idea of handing over my mixes to someone so they can apply their samples and whatnot. That quickly turns into a game of PM tag every time I adjust something, and can easily lead to having to wait weeks to see how it sounds. So I just avoid that area altogether these days, as it's proven to be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.
I tried out Reaper, and have kind of started to understand how it works. However, I've not found a single good free VST or VSTi that I liked the sound of just for the piano alone. I also can't get the soundfont samples (Squidfont, TGSF21x, and a few others) to sound like they're not heavily muffled (as in, "turn off the treble, and throw a thick blanket over the speaker"-type muffled). Selecting different sounds in a soundfont set doesn't seem to work either, and nothing I've read explains what I did wrong (if anything), or what's not working right (if anything). In short, it's pissing me off

You're a damned genius.
I'm going to start PMing (or emailing, if possible) people that haven't updated in a while. People like RK seem to do great deals with little time, making it possible for him to still be with the game even though he's way behind. After seeing people's plans on whether they are still interested in working on this project (and trying to catch up quickly), we'll be able to assess which songs are going to need to mixers.
It might also be a nice idea to try and get some more posted remixers in addition to Sixto on board now that VotL and ToF have wrapped up. I, for one, tend to be a sucker for anything Mr. Hsu does.
Also, artwork?

Also, Coop, your mix was great. There's gotta be a way to get it rendered with some better samples...maybe even downloading the trial of FL and producing the track that way. I don't really understand. Spambots registered on the forum? When I signed up, I needed to be granted access manually by the forum admin. Did the spambots bypass that somehow?

They still signed up. I get about 5/10 emails a day asking me to authorize random accounts. That what the guy was getting pissed off at.
Dafydd
04-30-2008, 10:41 AM
5/10? Escariot said hundreds. How do you stop the spambots anyway? Put up a password for accessing the signup page? I guess you could, in addition to authorization, could force whoever signs up to click an activation link in a confirmation e-mail, but then the server would be sending e-mails all over the place anyway. One way would be to stop the server from sending e-mails to people until they're authorized, and to have control panel for activating accounts. Rather than an e-mail sent to the administrator every time someone signs up, the admin could log in once every so often and check if any non-random people signed up and need authorization. Or, the admin could create the accounts. Each of these options require a little bit of programming though...
I wonder how OCR does it. This place must be a very popular target for bots of all kinds.
Rozovian
04-30-2008, 11:22 AM
You're also having spambot problems? I found 15 accounts awaiting authorization this morning. Sucks to run a project when that's where the time goes. How are they getting past the CAPTCHA?

Escariot
04-30-2008, 01:52 PM
Well, there are spambots out there that are made to bypass phpbb2's default captcha, since it's just a grid kind of thing. And these forums are the ones that get the most publicity because the link is posted everywhere. And yes, Fishy is low-balling, but remember, it sends 4 emails for every account. One to me, one to Fishy, one to Audix, one to Pockets. In addition to the emails that I get that say "Undelivered Mail", the mail count easily reach 100 on a slow day.

From what I've seen in past projects, stuff that's accepted is kept private until the project is done and released. Considering there's a forum for all this that's meant solely for mixers which no one else can access, I can't imagine Fishy and them wanting the project's mixes being passed around for other things. If it's a song for the "extras" section, that might be different. But if it's the one you made for the main project song line up, then I'd wager the project leaders want it to be kept under wraps.
Fishy

My thoughts? Things might have moved forward a lot since I was last on the site, but from what I remember, there was still a sizable way to go a few months back. Perhaps you should hold off until the end of the project is in site (a couple months or so from being published), and then discuss releasing a track as a preview. I think you make my point for me by just noticing that post from over nine months ago.
Popping up every six months or so and adding a smiley to the end of your post doesn't make up for the fact that you are the weakest link on this project.

while i'm not really doing much on this particular project, my work on dreamers showed me that unless you constantly hound people to get stuff done, they won't do it (unless they're a really mature and well-known mixer, and got that way through hard work). so, pocket, unless you really put your nose to the grindstone, this project ain't going anywhere...and you can point your finger directly back home to yourself.

K well, if you guys want me off the project then I won't agrue. But I have made comments on nearly every mix. There have only been 3 WIP due dates, the 4th one doesn't count, and condsidering I haven't updates my track in months i'm not sure how I missed the first several, or several at all. If you are trying to be a hero get over yourself.
I've admitted several times to being gone for so long.
And for not wanting drama you are very dramatic.

This isn't the place for this. And I didn't want drama last year. Now I'm going to be all about the drama. I'm going to send you a very dramatic PM. Very dramatic.

haha nice.
Ok Fratto and myself have talked.
This project is going to become more strict. I mean that. Unless Fishy has a date set i'm setting one right now.
Not a release date, a *final track* date.
This is serious. It's not a bluff when I say you and your track will be cut.
Get going.
I'm on the project forum for help, reviews, questions, feedback, whatever you need.

I would suggest that's a bold but unfeasible move. Basically what you've done there is disappear for months, come back and finish your track when it suits you then set a cutoff date for a few weeks after.
Not to mention we have 4 unclaimed tracks and 4 without wips.
I'm really not bothered who's ultimately running the project, but I've been on enough of them to know that what you've set just isn't going to happen AND is totally pointless. We're not gonna be the next project out so what is the point of cutting off all tracks that soon? All Fratto was basically annoyed at was that the project leader was slacking and acting as though it wasn't damaging the project. Getting all "strict" all of a sudden doesn't change the current state of the project.
Also to both of you: Public forums aren't the place for drama, and neither is proposing a date. Its not my decision, but I'd rethink your date and edit that out of your post pocket.

If for whatever reason you guys don't get a remix together for the Merry-Go-Round song, my remix is basically done. Uploading it's a problem right now thanks to iffy connections, but it's there, using the same samples as it did back in January. I'm going to be uploading it to VGMix over the weekend (hopefully Sunday... assuming my ISP gets on the ball and fixes things), so if you're interested in having it fill that spot again, let me know before then.

If you really are serious, what you had better do is sit down and PM/email EVERY PERSON on the project who hasn't finished to let them know your decision. Just posting it here isn't enough, because I know from experience that a lot of folks involved with projects won't necessarily be watching the thread or forums, particularly if those places have been inactive for awhile. You need to harp on people and crack down if you're really serious and want things to get done.
I'd also agree that the date is probably too soon.

And Fishy, I don't care who is running this either. Me, you, Audix, all of us. Whoever.
I'll delete the date, even though it doesn't mean a thing. Just when I want the mixes done. Except Kyle quoted me.
And I believe I worded pretty much everything wrong. Lets try this:
*A due date is a due date. Anyone misses it, tough. This includes me more then anyone. But goes for all of us!
*Fratto wants leadership, and I can offer up more then I had when this project started. If that's alright with you Fishy.
*When I said strict I meant organized. No slacking, no inactive forums, no pulling a Pocketman and disappearing... but seriously.
And Fishy I apologize for just leaving.

I removed the date from the quote.
Also, nice talking down on my advice. Mine is the largest, most extensive OCR project yet, so it's taken some time to get out there. But devaluing my thoughts based on that is rather silly, yes? It's been slow, but I've never abandoned or forgotten about SoS.

edit: just for reference, my personal dreamers track was done about a month after we started the project...about a year and four months before we were done.

Just to speak for my absence, I'm two months from graduating and in the process of sending resumes and cover letters out, along with my toughest course load yet. Suffice it to say that this project isn't very high on the priority list of life. :p
For those interested, Fishy's and my Bowser mix is done, and I'm about 50% done with the staff roll.

Can I take a crack at doing something with the Merry-Go-Round song, if there' some time to kill?
Edit: Actually, what is needed? I notice the ending fanfare is open, and I'm curious if Slider or the File Select song are coming along (I'm going purely by the status colors on the first post). Anyway, I'm up for doing something.
