Now taking signups. Specific rules will be posted soon.

1) To join, post in this thread. If you decide to drop out before then, you may, just PM me and I can remove your name from the list.

2) Winner of this tournament will be allowed to choose a game for next month's tournament, as we are hoping this can be a continuous event. More details when it comes to that. As for other prizes, I really have nothing except bragging rights.

The game format will go as such (copied from kamoh's post on page two):
Use 2P Match Race.
Best 3/5 wins.
Agree to a track to start off the series. Loser picks every subsequent track, but do not repeat any tracks.
Do not change racers.

NOTE: 3/5 may change to 5/9.

I'm waiting to talk to kamoh about match setups.

Netplay instructions:
First, you need a netplay-enabled emulator (I suggest the latest version of ZSNES, link provided in Links below) and Hamachi (ditto on the link). ZSNES comes in its own package, so just download and extract from the ZIP. As for Hamachi, you'll need to install it. Once installed and configured, click on the Join Network button and join network "OCR Tournaments" and password "ocremix", both without the quotes. (I would appreciate that you do not join the network unless you are ACTUALLY in the tournament.) Once connected to Hamachi, you will have a special network IP. Open ZSNES, and click on NETPLAY, then on INTERNET. It will ask you to either start a server or connect to server. You can work this out amongst yourselves, because it really doesn't matter who does who, just be sure to give the other person your Hamachi IP. Once connected to each other, you'll have to both load the same ROM file (or compatible, they have to be the same type). One person can send a copy of the file to the other person, if necessary. After this, the game should start, and you can both play!

Links:

ZSNES:
There is apparently a new version of ZSNES out, v1.50. v1.50 has no netplay, so you will need to use v1.42.
1.42 (Windows):
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zsnes/zsnesw142.zip
1.42 (Mac):
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zsnes/zsnes142.zip

Hamachi:
http://hamachi.cc/

As for the ROM, we're not allowed to link to it, so you'll have to obtain it on your own.

That he is.

Anyway, the reason that rules haven't been posted yet is because I've yet to work out the kinks in the plan. I'll have general rules up posthaste.

All people who have indicated a wish to be added have been added to the list. I'm discussing potential plans with kamoh right now, and hopefully a plan should be worked out soon. Also, I kicked the majority of people out of the Hamachi group. I only left those who are on this month's participant list.

There are no DK levels in Super Mario Kart - you're probably thinking of Mario Kart 64

For reference, the Special Cup tracks in Super Mario Kart are:
Donut Plains 3
Koopa Beach 2
Ghost Valley 3
Vanilla Lake 2
Rainbow Road

Two Questions:

1) Do you WANT to do Special tracks? I'd rather not because they require you to unlock them.
2) Best 3-out-of-5, 4-out-of-7, or 5-out-of-9?

2) Best 3-out-of-5, 4-out-of-7, or 5-out-of-9?
They're not hard to unlock, but if you don't want to use them, that's fine. I'm just pretty sure of my skills in Rainbow Road =P

2) 3 of 5 is plenty imo.

Yeah 3 out of 5 is good - we'd probably just get a lot of piling on if it was any more.
Tiebreaks will probably be a simple system, it's just choosing where to place everything.

I figured out a system that replicates the tiebreak from the first tournament, but in a much simpler package - we'll call them points ("race points" this time around), and they'll be either the third or fourth tiebreaker. You earn points with the following match scores:

3-0 win = 5 points
3-1 win = 4 points
3-2 win = 3 points
2-3 loss = 2 points
1-3 loss = 1 point
0-3 loss = 0 points

Again, WINS and LOSSES are more important than these points.

1) Most Wins.
2) Most Games Played. (losses)
3) Head to head results.
4) Race Points.

Well, (this is ZSNES 1.42 btw.) whenever I open the ZSNES now, it never goes into the blue screen as it's supposed to. it just stays black, i can't do anything to it or about it, so eventually, all the time, i have to ctrl+alt+Del and end it that way :-x.

Everyone, it's easiest if you make sure that you post results in this thread. Even when I'm online I'm not always online, and mew isn't the one that updates the results.

I beat mike231 in a very very deceiving 3-0 result - I was always down going into lap 5, and most notably on Mario Circuit 1 where I needed a mushroom to make up the difference after the LAST TURN - I stole that race from him any way you look at it, as well as the other two.

goldenkrnboi

ok, this is ridiculous. snes9x needs to put a way better netplay in 1.5 for win when they release it.

I beat sologamer 3-0. but once again, lag. i got to experience firsthand exactly how bad the lag was. and it was HORRIBLE. so i decided to do no more matches until either the tourney's over or my zsnes starts working. also, for solo and link, if my zsnes works, i'm willing to do a rematch to make it a lot more fair.

EDIT: WHAT THE FRUITCAKES! AFTER ALL THIS TROUBLE WITH LAG AND JUNK, ZSNES FINALLY WORKS? that's messed up. i swear, that's freakin messed up. kamoh, please don't include the results that i posted already. Link and Solo, i'm willing to do rematches like i said. sorry about it. i swear, it didn't work before now. although i can't do it at the moment, cause my sister needs to use the computer now.

While there's never a "bad" match to play (whether or not you win or lose, just by playing you're screwing everyone else), there are "missed opportunities" that can really drag you down.

I lost Mario Circuit 1 vs. Linkspast - that's a blown chance if there ever was one - and only was able to beat him in 5 races. I was down until the very last race in Bowser Castle 2. Great games, and great usage of tools and advantage.

will there be a finals system of sorts?
I'm not sure. I'd really like to get revenge on dPaladin and goldenkrnboi, so at this stage of the game I'm all for it. (although, with my luck, we'd have a finals system and I'd get the first seed, then get summarily destroyed in the playoffs).

The benefit I wasn't aware of until the AG tournament was adamant about HAVING a finals system was that we could almost completely eradicate the reporting system with finals. Since the ultimate goal is to find a single winner, the top 4 or 6 players in the round-robin will certainly have the best player (who actually shows up), regardless of reports.

I'm going to be looking to codify rules with Mew, Arek, and EasyP so that we can have a fairly uniform set of rules in place for finals. Since the four of us are the heads of tournaments, it'd be nice to use the same guidelines for all of them (or at least most - chess doesn't have quite the grand appeal that AG and EMU have gained so rapidly). PRC and ORC used to have the same voting guidelines and staggered their schedules pretty well until someone fucked it all up back in 2005.

Of course, that someone was me, but you live and you learn. Then you get Luvs.

My dad has Norton Internet Security on my comp and it's password protected. Any ideas on how to bypass this or if it's maybe something else that wouldn't allow me to connect?

1.42 (Mac):
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zsnes/zsnes142.zip

Hamachi:

As for the ROM, we're not allowed to link to it, so you'll have to obtain it on your own.

ZoneAlarm occasionally does that to me. I disable it when it does that, then re-enable it when I'm done.

Also, I'm going to have to drop out of the tournament. I'll attempt to keep track of standings, but I probably won't have constant access to an internet connection for a while. I'll try to keep updating the thread for future months.

Current standings are below, including vega's position if he was not ineligible for playoffs.

The playoffs are used to even the field for players that are doing very well but not playing a lot of matches. They are meant as an alternative to "Reports" so that we have a uniform and acceptable system of deciding the winner, without any subjective reasoning on my part. Again, PLAYOFFS are meant to REPLACE reporting.

Here are the standings currently.

We will end the round-robin on Sunday and start playoffs - and hopefully end them - in quick succession next week. Vega12's games will not count because he cannot recieve a playoff berth.

PLAYOFFS:

The Top-6 formats available (with semi-final match-ups in parenthesis):
Traditional (1 vs. 4/5, 2 vs. 3/6), the traditional bracket format.
Reversed (1 vs. 3/6, 2 vs. 4/5), traditional, where 1 and 2 switch positions.
Odds-Evens (1 vs. 3/5, 2 vs. 4/6), best for second place finisher.
Champions (1 vs. 4/6, 2 vs. 3/5), best for first place finisher.

Seeds 1 and 2 will receive automatic byes to the semi-finals.

FORMAT: First to 5 races (by 2) or First to 7 races (by 1).
Start with Mario Circuit 1, loser picks next track, no special circuit (same as round-robin).

Race 1 Mario Circuit 1:

Race 2 Bower Castle 1:

Race 3 Mario Circuit 2:

Race 4 Koopa Beach 1:
dammit. like i said, red shells really hated me this match. i got hit by one and it cost me badly because i fell in the water. i never caught up. winner: solo

Race 5 Mario Circuit 3:
Damn. mistakes after mistakes after mistakes. Lap 1: solo takes lead, but i get mushroom. i use shortcut to lead. leader: me
Lap 2: solo gets mushroom, but i still maintain lead somehow. leader: me
Lap 3: solo gets another mushroom. i try to block shortcut. semi-works. solo gets through shortcut, but gets blasted into the wall thanks to arrow boost thing. leader: me
Lap 4: this is where my luck went down the toilet. I get green shell. and solo (no surprise) gets the stupid stupid red shell. i focus on the red shell, my timing on laying down the green shell, and the huge turn in Mario Circuit 3. I end up making the turn waaaay too early. and i end up getting stuck. solo easily passes me. takes me a while to get out. i try to catch him. But I get hit twice by the moving spike things to seal the deal. No need to post Lap 5.

The record feature built into zsnes just records button presses and saves them to a .zmv file into whatever directory it normally saves .srm files.

Not really sure if it works in online play though. We can use something like Camtasia Studio (http://www.techsmith.com/download/trials.asp) to record the playoffs, I guess. Then we can start a youtube group and post playoff matches there for all future SNES (and AG) tourneys.

Sologamer and I played a final-match simulation. That means that if we both win through to the final, this match counts.

It was odd. It was strange. And on my side terrible.

Mario Circuit 1: Win for me, handily.
Mario Circuit 3: Win for me by a longshot.
Koopa Beach 1: Got him by avoiding two red shells and a late star.
Bowser Castle 1: Thorough outclassing, 1/2 lap victoly.

This is where things get hairy.

Ghost Valley 2: I go in thinking "hey, it's in the bag, I'm good at ghost valley."

WRONG.

I got summarily destroyed by both myself and Solo. And again. And again. And again. Every track I chose, I failed. Some close, some miserably. I always led early and dropped back late, or a quick skirt gets me here or there.

Major props to Solo for picking up the win.

Just played a situation match with dPaladin
He was beating me pretty good the first four races, despite an early lightning bold in the first race. But in typical fashion, I started pulling victories out of my ass and won the next two races, thanks to a well timed lightning bolt in Mario Circuit, which made him miss the big jump.

The final race, vanilla lake, was pretty close. I was barely behind him in the final lap, with a mushroom in stock, but I ended up crashing against the wall when I used it and failed to catch up, ending it at 5-2 in his favor.

So, is this thing dead?

I dunno. dPaladin and I talked earlier and I wanted to figure out what game he would pick.
The most aggravating thing is that we've had playoffs for a while now and just about nothing has actually gotten done - to the point that I'm considering canning the playoffs and telling Mew to make the next thread with whatever we decide to have.

Drack wants Gundam Wing: Endless Duel
I want either Mario All-Stars Battle, or a sports title (NHL 94, Super Rugby, or Tecmo Super Bowl).
dPaladin hadn't really thought about it.
I think that Atmuh's gone MIA.

Do we need to make the "playoffs" smaller? Or maybe a pool instead of a bracket?

All I know is...we were supposed to be doing the next tournament by now, and we're not. This weekend it WILL be posted, and if nobody decides on a game or that they'd like to win the tournament, it's gonna be something I pick.

If we do TSB, there's a question that has to be asked - which version?

1) The 1991, NES version, with major incompleteness (but is the competition friendly version).

2) The 1993, SNES version, which solves the issues from the above game.

3) The 1995, SNES TSB3, which has the two-point conversion but the gameplay is changed significantly.

TSB is actually very arcade-y. The strategy/skill/luck ratio is pretty even, and you have just about as good of a chance of winning as anyone else.
I keep telling everyone this - the best sports game is a sports GAME, not a SIMULATION. Tecmo Super Bowl is undoubtedly a game first, and a very fun one at that, with a significant football element.

Unless we played TSB1, where I would run up the gut on you every time and score 100-0.

Since dP has already defeated me, this gives Atmuh the inane opportunity to win the tournament from 5th position by playing only one match, if he wishes. However, I will be fighting on dP's behalf if it should come to that, since I'd like a highly un-warranted second place honor.

I want some feedback from everyone else on this, though. Right now I'm leaning toward Super Bomberman 2 for SNES.

But would anyone object/not be able to play if we used a N64 or GBA game instead? Super Smash Bros. on netplay might chop a bit, but that's an awesome game to play. Advance Wars for GBA could be great fun, but I admit that it's pretty time-consuming. The only problems I see with N64 is that mapping the controls to a keyboard is even crazier and that it will be harder to play online with a decent framerate. GBA basically functions like an SNES so we should be okay unless we can't find a good emulator. Thoughts?
