Edge's player is the mp3 player of the devil.
Every one of you dolts would have said it as well so I decided to get out before continuing this thread.
I have about 4000 or so on mine at the moment.

I don't have an mp3 player. I don't have a discman, nor a walkman. I simply do without music when I'm not chilling or dancing and stuff.

My old mp3 player has only 256 megs, so I constantly rotate. Right now, it's a bunch of Dethklok songs.
Currently on iTunes: 312 songs, 20.2 hours, 1.28 GB. I need to expand my hard drive before I can really get serious about music collecting.

I have two 4 gig players (a mini and a nano) and one 1 gig player (a new shuffle) so my playlists are relatively small. But being limited to 1000-1200 songs keeps my iPods fresh. I have about 50 gigs of tunes or so on my computer, but I only put my favorites or current albums on my iPods. It always seems like a good song is coming on and I rarely skip tracks. Each iPod has a slightly different feel since I use my mini as a car stereo, the nano as a general purpose iPod, and the shuffle for snowboarding/exercising. On the two 4 gig players I have generally the same playlist set up: one list with everything, one with hard/loud music, one with generally listenable music with most of the hard/fast stuff cut out, a playlist of current favorites and recently added songs, one list of more relaxing music, and one of just hip hop. The shuffle is mostly high energy songs that go well with snowboarding like punk and hardcore.

They have to be physically present on your player for them to count.

Damn that's a lot of music. I have about 3500 so far on a 30 gig ipod. The thing is, I've tried to keep it narrowed down considerably - I once spent about 4 hours going through my music, deleting what I didn't like, sampling and deciding, and fixing the multitude of shitty ID3 tags. What a horrible day that was. Anyway, I keep current with it now and just do all that as I add stuff.
But honestly.
Even if I DIDN'T do that I can't possibly imagine having 12000 songs, and I love music.

Usually around 100-115.
I only have minimal needs for a portable mp3 player - and it's basically for plugging into my car stereo when I have songs I haven't burned to an mp3 disc yet.
Incidentally, I find the whole "plug your ipod into your car" to be very tacky. My brother does that and it's... it's just not cool. It reminds me of people who used to use one of those tape converters to plug their CD player in their cars' stock AM/FM/Cassette deck because they were too poor or cheap to put in a decent deck.
It's just trashy.

I find it convenient. I hate fucking around with my FM transmitter (I use that at work because I don't like lugging my speakers around) while driving. It's also because I don't care enough to switch out the whole thing.

In WinAmp? 782 tracks, 47 hours worth of music. My media folder comprises almost 8000 tracks.
I haven't bothered trying to transfer any of this over to my mp3 player (a Toshiba GigaBeat 20GB I got for free) for two reasons.
1. Some of it is still in FLAC.
2. This damn thing only has a USB1.1 connection.
When I get finished reripping/transcoding everything back to MP3 I'll dedicate a couple of nights to copying it all over to the Gigabeat (I encoded 8.5GB over the weekend and I'm not yet finished).

I've finished listening to all the mixes of the games I've played. Mainly Final Fantasy and MGS and Chrono Trigger. Heck, I haven't listened to more than 10 Chrono Trigger mixes. Now I am looking for good songs to put on my mp3 that I haven't noticed yet. I tried looking at the reviews page (http://ocremix.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14&daysprune=60&order=desc&sort=replycount) and thought that if something has many reviews, then it must be good. When I listened to Zelda, the Music of my Groin (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00209/) I saw that I was mistaken. So, what good songs do you listen to here on OCR?

Solution:
1. Download all via torrent.
2. Browse through collection, finding both well known quality songs and underappreciated gems.

On my Toshiba Gigabeat (which runs Rockbox [Rockbox is AWESEOME!]), I have about 52,000 songs (rounded down. There's stuff in there that's not all music [album art, playlists, NFO, SVN, stuff like that]). I've got the really big C64 SID collection thing on there, tons of SPCs, the 2a03 (NSFs) collection, as well as commercial game NSFs, and plenty of MP3s (there's some FLAC and ADX (a fairly-large-in-file-size format, compared to MP3) in there as well). As I recall, the SID collection thing by itself is over 40,000 files. Excluding that, I'd be surprised if I had less than 10,000 on there. My Gigabeat has a 40 GB drive, and I've got about 1.5 GB left free on it.
On my PC though, I had 55,000+ (in Winamp), last time I checked. And I know for a fact that I've gotten *at least* 10,000 more since then. And that's not including the C64 SID collection... Including that, I've probably got 100,000+ songs on my PC... Wow... That's a surprise to even me...
As for total play time, I have no idea. Probably 1 or 2 months. Possibly more, with that SID collection. At the rate I'm going, I'll probably never actually listen to all those songs... Mouser X out.

I rarely even listen to music except for classical music and the occasionally funny country or rap music now.
Almost all of them comedy skits, voice actor bloopers, shock jock radio shows and podcasts.
Maybe 1000 files on my MP3 player tops.

...what's that smell?
Like others have said, go download a Bit Torrent client. I like Azureus, myself. Just Google the terms and their web pages'll come up. After you have a client, go to the front page and click a torrent to download a small torrent file. Open the small torrent file and the client should begin your transfer process. Not too hard, right? I did this (finally) some 2 months ago and found a lot of great ReMixes this way. Granted, I didn't download everything. I stuck to ReMixers I like or games that I could identify with, so only about 50% of the mixes, really.
As for my collection? I've read some of the posts in this thread, and man... months worth of music? Get real, man. I love music more than the average Joe, but I'm also friends with a hardcore music junkie so I know what a lot of "you" guys must be like.
Personally, I'd like to think that I aquire new music at a rate that allows me to listen to everything I own and still out-listen most people. I'm not out to listen to everything; I'm not going to go broke over music.
Anyway, 3,050 songs, 8.5 days, mostly mp3 or ACC files with a small peppering of high-definition music files. Granted, you're not going to see much in the way of 70s rock on my computer because of the SATURATION anyone can find on their radio dial. I do go for the older bands that I like a lot, though, like ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Beach Boys, Dick Dale, Bill Withers, Astrud Gilberto, Lynyrd Skynyrd, CAN, Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, T. Rex, Van Morrison, Vince Guaraldi Trio, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, etc.

1400-- but 900 that I might listen to (3+star), and 300 that I usually listen to (4+star).
That's really a more interesting question imo-- how many do you regularly listen to? Or do you just put it on all 3000 and press play?
(The 500 I won't listen to are mostly "bad" songs like OLR/BEER/EAR/FEAR, or WIPs, or source tunes, etc. They're on my ipod because I still have room (20g free out of 30g), so I don't bother with deleting them.)

I only have about twenty or thirty songs on my nano, actually. The rest of the space is taken up by Pimsleur language audio and audio-books.

I've got 163, but at full capacity it held around 230 or so. Some of it's OCR, most of it is just random stuff.

Question was mp3 player, not collection :-? . When I had ~400 GB of music, I was never so arrogant to assume I covered practically every genre either.

Lets just say, if I walked around with my mp3 player on all day and night, I still wouldn't be close to hearing all of the songs that are on it.

Just under 2000 at last check. Predominantly VG now, as prior to that, my tastes were, shall we say, lacking.

On my 1gb memory card player, I have around 120.

I don't have an iPod or similar. I don't want moving parts (hard drive) in an mp3 player, so I go with flash. I have 2 flash-based devices with mp3 playing capabilities (cell phone - LG VX8600, and homebrew-capable Nintendo DS) both of which use microSD.
So I have about 1 gig worth for those.

Yeah I made the same mistake I while back by showing the collection total, but my 2gb iPod ( I want a new one :( ) has 272 songs and its full. Most of the songs are 7+ mins long
and 75% of the music is trance, electronic and dance, then 20% is OCREmix and the other 5% is Rock :P, I just cant remove it the songs are too good :D

I think I have somewhere around 200+ songs on mine. It's a 1 gig Creative Zen Nano Plus, so it can't hold an uber-godly amount, but it gets the job done since I can just convert 'em to .wma.
I think I have close to 6 gigs of music, and that's about it. I listen to each and every track though, and I can listen to the same song over and over without ever getting tired of it.

With every mp3 converted to 128 kbp (for listening purposes only as changing mp3 encoding's a bad idea), I'm able to fit 130 songs if each are 5 minutes or less.
Yup, 256 MB with an extra data card. I need to upgrade... :(
