A WINNER IS YOU!
After a painstaking process involving much blood, sweat, and tears, the votes have been counted!
And teh winner is...
RAMBO!
Congratulations to Rambo for winning this month's FAC! Although we're fresh out of obscure tropical islands to give out as prizes this (or any) month, you can hold your head high in the knowledge that people thought your drawing was more kick-ass than the other kick-ass drawings submitted this month! Nice work! And to the rest of you, thanks for entering, and hope to see you next month!

This month's info
Welcome to the March edition of OCR's "official" Fan Art Competition (FAC)!
Due to that thing we all love called life, Atmuh is unable to perform the usual busywork associated with great contests such as this, so I shall be the interim administrator for this month. Other than that, I expect the usual awesomeness from all the talented people on this site, so go forth with your bad self and make something grand!
For final results of last months compo click here (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6609=5018).
All previous contest entries can be found right here (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/OCRFanArt). Thanks to MiamiGuy for setting that up and maintaining it.
If your unfamiliar with FAC then please refer to the following post that contains all rules and regulations.
As you know the winner of last months FAC gets the privilege of choosing this month's theme. Electronic Samurai has selected Metroid.
For the three or so people who don’t know much about Metroid, or would like a effortless and easy to reach link to get “inspired”, here’s a link to Wikipedia: Metroid Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroid_%28series%29)
Remember, this is a big series with 10 games in the franchise, don’t be afraid to do a little research for your idea!
THE FINAL ENTRIES
It's that time again, to participate in this crazy thing we call democracy and VOTE! That's right, put those pencils down, close that photoshop program, and give those crayons back to your cousin!
Now, gaze in wonder and excitement at, I dare say, one of the better turnouts the FAC has had! Now, enough of my rambling, let's see those ENTRIES!

I want to thank each and every participant for entering, you all have put allot of work into these masterpieces, and for that, you should be proud.
But now, it's up to you, the viewers at home/work/cafe/friend's house to decide which of these artists shall be dubbed, for this month, WINNER!
Remember, to vote, send me a PM with your top three choices, in order, and maybe a few comments about the contest.
Remember, cast your vote before the 29th of March or else dreams will die!
And while you're reading this post, support this thread by wearing one of these:

Possible Questions (now with answers)
What is the Fan Art Competition?
The Fan Art Competition is a monthly event where artists create some form of art based on a certain theme.
What is the theme?
The theme is decided by the winner of the previous months competition and must be video game related.
What if I don't know much about the theme?
Information resources are provided in the first post of the thread.
Who can submit art?
Anyone
What are my restrictions?
You are allowed to submit one entry, but other than that there are no restrictions. There are no size, quality, image size restrictions.
Who decides the winner?
OCR of course, the whole community votes on it.
How does voting work?
On the day after the deadline I will make a post that displays all of the art submitted. Then users will be allowed to see every entry and decide which three they like the best, in order. Afterwhich they will send me a PM with their vote and maybe a few comments about the contest. They must do so in the announced voting period. If not then they fail at voting.
When and how do we see the results?
After the voting period is over I will count the results and figure out which peice has the most points. When voting the voter sends in their top three favorite peices. The one they like the most is worth 3 points, the second 2 points and the third 1 point.
If I enter the contest can I vote?
Yes, and voting for yourself is allowed if you REALLY wanna.
Once the points have been counted I will send a happy PM to the winner that tells them that they one and explains how they are to choose the next months theme. *deep breath* Once I get a PM back I will post the results and artists choice for the next months theme.
Rules and Regulations!
1) Any art submitted must be based off of the months theme.
2) No P0rn.
3) Your entry must be created within the month. It cannot have been something you've created in the past or partially finished prior to the announcement of the theme.
4) All entries must be 100% your work. Simply altering something created by someone else may be cool, but is not allowed as an entry.

I knew Metriod would come up eventually - that's one reason I didn't choose it myself. The other is that I've got no idea how we're gonna top some of the absolutely amazing Samus art that been done. I'm hoping we'll get lots of amazing stuff that's not just Samus
As always, I already have an idea - but I'll probably end up starting half way through the month anyway =/

I thought the rule was so it's more fair to people with limitied time. But also so people who'd want to do two will instead put more effort into one, therefore resulting in higher quality stuff.
I've got a question though. I was thinking of making a comic, and I'm wondering if I can use Flash to navigate through the pages/panels. To take that a step further, can I add animating stuff, kind of like the stuff in this [link - may contain long loading time] (http://kodansha.cplaza.ne.jp/e-manga/club/manga/metroid/vol01/) ?
The only interactivity would be changing the pages (click a button), and there'd be no sounds either. Whadda'ya say?

I not understand....? Most of the games are in 2D, and we're making 2D art. Blizzard once held an art contest, and some of the categories involved making 3D stuff based on a 3D game..... aww, I just wanna see you make something 3D!! =D

Well, I am no noob, and I know this exists. I know you hate the contests subforum, but it's really helpful for regulars like me to find what we want to see.
I think the best way would be some sort of 'advertising' thread in GenDisc for contests like this.
friendlyHunter
03-07-2007, 05:00 AM
Yeah... perhaps some kind of sticky thread for contest discussion, or something. Or a thread with a list of all the current contests with their status (current theme, deadline for sumbission/voting etc.). ...Scratch that last idea; too much unnessesary work.
Alas, the battle for attention continues...
OCR's front page has some Announcements and Community Discussion threads displayed there - perhaps the contests forum should have the same thing?

Anyway, here's what I originally wanted to post:
My Metroid Prime 2 saved games mysteriously dissapeared from my memory card, so currently I'm unable to make my entry (which was gonna be a short comic strip based on MP2). I need either:
1) Close-up screenshots of certain things in the game, which I highly doubt exist. Perhaps there's screenshots database of all the scan data somewhere?
2) Some kind of gamecube emulator and MP2 ROM with a save file (I haven't looked into this yet). This should be 100% legal since I own the game.
3) Another good idea for an entry that's within my limits of time, ability, and patience.
4) Ummm.... guess I'm taking requests now, I suppose? I don't do good photorealism unless I have a great source photo/picture/thing in front of me, so don't make me.
I'm screwed, aren't I? =[ Guess I'll go looking for those screenshots now.....
[Edit]
5) I could make the style so insane that it doesn't matter WHAT the original stuff looked like. Same goes for the story. Could be interesting, but I'd rather base it off the original....

Alright, I need help. NO, not phychologically - I need a reference pic of an Inglet, those little eye-on-a-stick guys from Metroid Prime 2. The internet seems to have ONE picture of one (and it was very hard to find), but it's incredibly blurry. I found no drawings of it either. Don't search the internet for it yourself, I already checked!! If anyone can take a screenshot or make a quick sketch of one (so I know what they actually look like), I'll be VERY happy.
The alternative is playing through a huge chunk of MP2 for the fourth or fifth time - and I don't think I have the time or patience for that while there's Twilight Princess to be played ^_^
The Phalanx
03-09-2007, 06:45 AM
I could always pop open MP2 over the next day or two, depending on when I have the free time, and make a quick sketch of the little bugger for ya. Beat the everloving snot out of the game, so I've no shortage of enemy info on my memory card.

I can't wait to see what comes out of this competition. Metroid is the game that really pulled me into videogaming in the first place. If I find the time to work on something, and the nerve to submit it, I may just enter something. If not then I look forward to seeing everyone's creation.

I'll try and hook you up with some stuff once I get some time. And that image above wasn't scanned in. I use a tablet that lets me draw onto the computer as if I'm drawing on a piece of paper. ;-)
First of all... what you say about that tablet thing is freaking amazing.
Secondly, D. Radium PMed me up with enough info to get me started in the right direction. So don't worry about it, thanks very much anyway. Hope to see your final product by submission time.

I was making some practice drawings, and I'm glad to say one of them was too kick-ass to not put in my comic. It also means I'm completely changing the style of how I was originally gonna do it - it's now gonna be in my "chaotic lines all over the place" style that seems to repel votes like... vote repellant. Well I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this anyway, and the result will not dissapoint =D
I'm also happy to see that others are interested coughBEANcough, looking forward to some great stuff!
Any "progress" on the Inglet screenshot, or the sketch? The deadline approacheth...

Yeah. They're crazy expensive. So, obviously, mine's not a Cintiq, but a regular ol' Wacom Intuos... 6x8 I think. It was a little under $400 or so. Decent price and I totally recommend them. you can even scan in a regular drawing, then "ink" the image on a separate layer using the tablet. This makes things a breeze as you can actually erase the "ink" if you don't like it or make a mistake.

Hey! I was interested in the last competition... I just didn't get around to finishing my entry, 'cause I read the deadline wrong. And just to prove it... some fake Pokémon I doodled up:

Those are so cool!! Far better and more original than alot pokemon that are actually in the game now'a days. Even the names are great! 8-)
I'm deffinately gonna have to look into getting a reasonable tablet. lol, I really wasn't sure whether or not you had that rediculous one, considering the great works you've put forth. But obviously thats just alot of gift and skill. :)!!

Here's to hoping I actually finish in time. D: Haven't had much time to do just about anything these past couple days. I have an arcade game compo to attend to also.

I'm having the same problem as Rambo; the more I look at mine, the more I despise it. Mind, its just a sketch at this point. But not drawing for weeks at a time, and not really having the drive to go through the effort of doing so, makes it frustrating.
I got a friend hounding me about it, though, saying it'd be blasphemy to NOT draw something Metroid. Thats incentive enough, I suppose.

I like your friend.
She laughed when I told her.
I'm scrapping my original because it was way, waaaay too ambitios for an out-of-practice Slim, so I'm switching to something else. As my friend said, I'm stressing too much over this, so I'm gonna just flip through my Metroid folder until something jumps out at me.
Its either going to be Metroid II, or Fusion. The former because it was my first Metroid game and I love it to death; the latter, because it was hella-fun and the SA-X was REALLY FUCKING SCARY. OMG BRICKS WERE SHAT.
friendlyHunter
03-20-2007, 04:41 AM
In my blind fanatisism, I'm hoping (though very sceptically) that they'll have SA-X as a character in Smash Bros Brawl (either that or Dark Samus). Or even in a sequel to Metroid Fusion. WHEN WILL THEY MAKE A SEQUEL TO METROID FUSION????? I'm guessing it's gonna be so awsome, they haven't yet been able to put together a team that's awsome enough to start it.
I could always pop open MP2 over the next day or two, depending on when I have the free time, and make a quick sketch of the little bugger for ya. Beat the everloving snot out of the game, so I've no shortage of enemy info on my memory card.
Still gonna do that? ;] If you don't have time for it, I totally understand. Actually, I've managed to extract some hidden quality from that fuzzy inglet picture I found. But a clearer sketch or screenshot would definately be nice =D
And here's a progress update why not: I've drawn a sadly low number of panels, but I'll try and pump out a whole ton in the next couple days. I've also got all the Flash stuff going smoothly. Ooooo excitedness!!

Wowww, lots of submissions :nicework: :nicework: :nicework: !!
As for mine, I'll have to submit it unfinished. Half of the panels will look like ugly uncoloured sketches (mostly because they ARE ugly uncoloured sketches), and a whole section (at the ending) will be missing. With any luck, you'll be left saying "IS THAT ALL????". But I should have no problem finishing the whole thing before the voting is over =)

Something to keep in mind in choosing a theme: the people who HAVEN'T played the games. Since System Shock 2 is such an amazing game, I once considered choosing it as the theme. But many who have not played it would research into the game, revealing major spoilers and such. Then the art would spoil plot details for anyone who votes (or the poor souls who see the art without voting). SS2 is one of those games that EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY. The fact that not everyone knows what it's all about, and that none but those who've played it know anything about the plot, is part of what makes it so awesome and mysterious. SS2 has the kind of story that you actually need to experience - you can't feel the full depth and magnitude of the story unless you play it. Preferably alone, at night, in the dark, with headphones.
From what I've read, Shadow of the Collosus was kind of the same deal - you need to PLAY it to know its power. Having not played the game myself, the contest gave me little motivation to delve into the plot details and really appreciate the game and the experience of playing it, thus I was not very appreciative of the art =( Same with Ico, I suppose. I wish I had a PS2....
By the way, SS2 is a PC game that is now free (completely legal to download), get it now!! It's also old (bad graphics ahoy!), so it can run on ye olde junk computer. If everyone on OCR beats SS2, then we can have it as a contest theme ^_^ Maybe if Bioshock is a big hit, we could have that as a future theme =D
Earthbound? I'd say enough people have played it for it's awsomeness to be appreciated. Castlevania? Contra? Kriby? MGS? Chrono seris? Katamari damacy? Half-Life? Same story, I think; wide enough audience for a good compitition. Warcarft? ehh-- TOO wide an audience. Blizzard's FIRST annual art contest alone had enough Warcraft art to choke an orc - the world doesn't need any more

You really do need to have played the game to appreciate the art associated with it. Unless it's absolutely fantastic art, but even then... art from something that hits home like a game you've played and loved - even if it's lower caliber - would be more interesting than something foreign to you.
ANYWAY, I REALLY hope that Castlevania comes up eventually. I was thinking of either Castlevania or Mystical Ninja if I ever win but I didn't think either would draw much attention. (Besides Super Metroid.. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Castlevania 3 are among my all time favorites) But now I'm under the impression that Castlevania is more popular than I anticipated?
