Chrono Trigger 'Temporal Distortion'

DJ Pretzel said "Judges loved it."
I am a judge.
Therefore, I loved it.

Very highly recommended, folks - no matter what you opinion on how over-remixed CT (and I swear to God, if I hear one complaint about ANOTHER CT mix... )

What?! Another Chrono Trigger mix!! Arrg!

Anyway, this seems like it could easily be in the soundtrack to a new Chrono Trigger game. It has all the ingredients of professionally done music, and the combination just sounds good and very deep. Distortion is good, but a little heavy for me, so I have to sort of put this in the same category as the Doom e1l8 remix as being a remix that is very well done but one I don't dig personally. Pretty much, you'll like it if you're not me...

Good mix. It took long enough to get on Overclocked, though! I got this from Star like a million months ago!

Good job, Star. But I told you that already... a million months ago.

This mix was ok.

Not that great, not that bad. Some parts were really outstanding, and it followed the song close enough, without being the song, so I appreciated it in that aspect.

The music flowed pretty well, but there are parts where there's too much. The drums often stand out more than they should.

All in all, it was a good download.

Pretty decently put together, my only gripe is that the Orchestral parts sound nothing like a real orchestra, both in sound quality and arrangement. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, the mix would have been far stronger had the emphasis been on the techno part, as the techno elements are dead-on.

Space Pirate w/ Laser Sword gives it an "ARRRR...RG?"

Approximately equivalent to a 6.5.

Hey, this isn´t half-bad! Altough I feel that there is a bit TOO much going
on in some parts.
I can imagine how dude Salzman really wanted it to be perfect
but in Sweden we would call it "brötigt"...
This is a recommended download though... if not just for
that distorted synth-lead (I luv it)!!!
Keep up the good work!

this one easilly makes it into my playlist. wow wowow

I love the orchestra mixed with the synth. Beautiful remix.

not much to say. Theres nothing i can gripe at, and this like someone else said, sounds like it could actually be part of the games soundtrack.

on a scale of 1-10... i give this a 9. ^.^

This song pretty much makes my day, i listen to this as i would to every other mix, and the piano + drum makes me want to play it again and again.

This mix has great quality, great sound, perfect lenght, a definite must for anyone who likes (or even DOESNT like) the chrono theme!

10/10 , two thumbs up !

I don't know, I just...can't get into it. It sounds too much like the original to me, which I've heard a lot.

*listens to it 500 times trying to like it*

ahhhh, oh well, to each man his own.

Temporal Distortion is an outstanding technical work. But more importantly, it is the most tasteful remix I've heard to date on OverClocked.

Attention to detail is important; good production and realistic engineering are also; but they are not themselves an end. The difference between a professional mix and a powerful one is where one aims these tools - for that is all they are. Star Salzman's tools are honed, and never fail to hit the mark in Temporal Distortion. There is no sign of a method or principle being followed here; this is no textbook mix. It is not orchestral, nor is it electronic, and while it contains elements of both it aims to be neither. What I hear is a shot at beauty, and only the most fitting parts have been selected for the job.

Often, the remixer hopes to recreate the mood of an original piece. At other times, a different, individual interpretation is the goal. This remix bothers with neither. It shines light on the beauty of the original theme. Mitsuda's work is expounded upon, not imitated or replicated.

For many remixers, mastering the skills of the trade is difficult enough. All we can do is admire the masterpiece and continue our efforts. But for the elite, Salzman is a real wakeup call. You have the tools, but to what end are they put to use?

I really liked this piece. While it may be true that there are many voices playing loudly throughout the body of the piece, the main melody still emerges strong. I especially like the powerful drumbeats and arpreggios which build up to the theme. Excellent!

Hey -

This is one of my favorite remixes :D Definately goin on my next audio cd (I put my absolute fav remixes on audio cds to take along with me, while the whole all-of-OCR+more playlist plays daily here at home hehe).

I got this piece a good while back on vgmix and loved it from that moment on :D Amazing work Star... you really are an inspiration to me. Thanks for the link to your site... I downloaded all your songs posted on vgmix, but am happy to know there are more
Would you mind telling me what hardware/synths and software you use? I'm trying to put together a good setup, and all the advice possible helps hehe

Again, thanks for the awesome mix... keep it up man.

Ahh. one of my favorites. What star did here, is put some elctronic elements almost where youd least expect to find them... yet he makes them fit so perfectly. everything seems to belong here thats here nothing seems out of place. I really think the percussion gives the peice alot of charm. very prefesional sounding and, well, excellent. I really have no complaints with this song. A nice job indeed.

Hmmm...

Well, after the build up, and all the great words from everyone else, to say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.

This is a very average mix. Nothing spectacular, nothing that'll blow you away.

Sound quality is very high, and the arrangement skills are very nice, but it just feels like anything and everything else out there. I truly don't find anything that puts this song above and beyond any other mix out there.

Nothing original that makes it stand out from the pack.

CT fan? Well, I guess you'll like it from the response of all the others here. ReMix fan or trying this even though you've never played the game before? It's nice... but don't believe the hype.

I enjoyed this mix. The beginning of the mix sounds like music for going to war. Good stuff.

7.5/10

Imagine this. The game : Chrono Break. Time : Opening cutscene.

This song starts playing and the first thing you see on the screen is the pendulum swing once, fade out to the Sony logo, the pendulum again, fade to Squaresoft logo. Then various cutscene from CT and CC, up until you hear the synth begin, from there start with concept drawings for settings like Zeal and such, then the Chrono Break title screen, then, just like the original CT showing animations from the new game itself until the end of the song.

I agree, this song is very CT-ish. 12/10!

Seamless and flawless for the most part in my opinion after heavily listening to this track. A totally superb job on this mix by StarBlast and likely my #1 favorite Chrono Trigger rearrangement! Don't miss this track.

I think this is awesome... but I'm going to give more reason then that.

Some might think it doesn't stand out. That it's hard to get into. Well, for those who think it's hard to get into... I don't really know what to say to you, other than to listen down to the percussion. It really kind of all follows from there... it'll suck you in.

But as to it standing out: it isn't that it has some particularly asskicking solos or new arrangements or vocals... it's about the experience. You need to listen to the details... it has a completely different feel from the original. ...for some reason, I envision the original as scales or fur being rubbed the right way, and this is what you get when you rub it backwards. It's like an inversion, stylistically. The other one was heroic and epic; this is more cool and artistic, and stylistic. There's something technological about it... maybe it's the seamlessness, maybe it's the percussion, but it isn't just the synths, you can be sure of that.

It's so ambient... so smooooth. Awesome job, Star! Others may have their opinions, and this may be the type of song you have to listen carefully to to enjoy the subtleties, but it really is great.

To me, the best way to describe it may be in terms of color: constantly shifting, plasma green stars in the sky on a black background. Dark greys and Dark Blacks with hints of green and brown moving back and forth on the bottom. That main synth is DEFINITELY green... the percussion is what gives it the silvery grey. The strings provide the brown, and everything else melds together into the infinitely deep, cool, smooth black.

Just my thoughts.

I still can't believe I haven't review this one yet and it's still on my playlist after 7 months! While it may sound very close to the original I enjoyed the orchestral pieces. I love this piece so much, it just can't be said enough. Great Job!

I still am trying to figure out how I never ran across star's mixes until I listened to Pillar Of Salt for Xeno.

All I can say is I'm about halfway through Star's playlist and I'm constantly being wowed by the attention to detail, and the overal creamy smoothness of the music. Star, you definately have my vote for one of my top favorite remixers to listen to.

Good, but not up to Star Salzman's usual standards. However, I should point out that Star's "usual standards" are rediculously high.

Ok fast forward to 2:28 - Right there was the moment I knew I loved this song. The piano, hitting the chord twice each time at the end of the theme - BRILLIANT, ABSOLUTELY FANTABULOUS!!!!!!!

I'm not even kidding, the fact that the last part of the theme was reiterated that one time - that one swift stroke of genius by the hand of Star Salzman - absolutely made this song. For me anyway. Oyeah and the rest was pretty cool too, I like the humming violins starting at 1:39, but they cannot compare to the piano part at 2:28.

Seriously y'all, listen up, learn this, big up yourselves. BOOYAKAHSHA.

OMG This is good! Out of all the Chrono Trigger mixes out there it's hard to find a good one, this one's definatly good

I'm glad it didn't have vocals either, that would have ruined it for me somehow

Especially with that clicking noise.

As Ziwtra posted before... great skills here, amazing arranging, expounding on the originals beauty... but really Star..your skills are going to waste on remixes... you really should be making music for games or movies or something, doesn't matter if youre 13 or 30, go get a damn music job and have fun with that shit, and POST EVERYTHING HERE!!!! this is a great song, i see it as a very elaborate remastering almost... amazing job star.. and as they say, keep it up yous!

Hey, this isn´t half-bad! Altough I feel that there is a bit TOO much going
on in some parts.
I can imagine how dude Salzman really wanted it to be perfect
but in Sweden we would call it "brötigt"...

For the rest of you guys who don´t speak swedish, I rally thought that this was a great mix. I am an orchestral fan myself, but it was a cool thing that Salzman here combined it with electronica to make somrehing new and groovy if I can say. It didn´t get wild, but that´s okay, we all love relaxing remixes too, aren´t we? Eh? Eh? :D

Man, I never posted on this song, but this was one of my old favorites from my early days here that somehow got lost in the shuffle. I probably haven't heard this since I played it on VGF many years ago. Great arrangement that holds up very well today with the trademark Star sounds and flavor. Definitely one to grab for the conservative arrangement that has its own voice.

Amazing. I can't freaking believe how much life was breathed into this theme; one that is quite tired due to overuse. It's electric, it's up and dancing. IT'S ALIVE!
Star does his usual big, bursting-at-the-seams delivery which I love above all else and keeps things pretty loud and furious. I mean, it's not like the concept of this piece hasn't been attempted before, but it's the little things that push this up into the stratosphere. The drums, the restrained orchestral backing, the unrelenting momentum. There is so much freshness brought to the table, and I'm such a fan of it.
This may just be the definitive version of this theme. Very impressive.

This is a great way to handle a conservative arrangement, where it's clearly been personalized, and very well crafted. I definitely enjoy this remix. :-)
