- The Original Remixing Competition 101 -

http://doulifee.com/image/orcstorage.jpg (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/orcwinner.php)

Welcome to ORC101.

Source Material
Last week's winner was Xela, just narrowly beating out analoq. This week he's decided to go in a different direction to Rexy's source last week, with somewhat of a faded dream in the mix. GEDDIT??

This piece has been influenced by the work of Nobuo Uematsu. I have composed this piece especially for ORC 101 - it's not recycled material either. I wanted to go for something suitably depressing after Rexy's bright and happy pop tune for ORC 100 :D
There are hints at happiness in the music. Who knows, maybe you'll pick up on it and completely change the mood of the piece. Anyway, hope it's remixable and have fun. I'll be looking forawrd to hearing your interpretations.

Xela - Faded Dreams: MP3 (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC101/ORC101_Xela_-_Faded_Dreams_MP3.mp3) - MIDI (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC101/ORC101_Xela_-_Faded_Dreams_MIDI.mid)

Deadline

Your deadline is Monday, March 26th at midnight. So have your pieces in to me before Monday to play it safe.

The Quick Rules Rundown

1. Anyone can enter regardless of your remixing ability.
2. Filesize is limited to 8 meg.
3. You may only enter one piece.
4. When you've finished your entry, please PM the link to me (The Orichalcon) before the deadline (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/orctimes.txt). Please do not post the mix in the thread.
5. Along with your submission, you're encouraged to do a short write-up or description of your entry.
6. You may submit your piece as a MIDI, MP3 or OGG file.
7. During the voting period, voters are encouraged to give a short review the pieces they vote in the top 3.
For information on voting and the competition rules, please visit this link (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/orcrules.php)
For information on when mixing and voting times start and end please visit this link (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/orctimes.txt)

The New Rules Better Explained

As you can see, the layout of the post is a little different. Much like TOMC, ORC will now use the first post of the thread as the main means of transaction. All the pieces will be linked here, along with the results. New rules are as follows:

1. You must now PM your piece to me, no exceptions. Please do not post the link in this thread at all. If you can't find a host, either email the piece to me as an attachment, or send it over IRC/MSN.
2. Along with your submission, you're encouraged to do a writeup. This is to help the listener better understand your piece, which can help you with votes in the end.
3. Much like TOMC, I'll be linking offsite to the results, along with which I'll paste all the votes that I've received. Voters are strongly encouraged to write a short review of why they voted the pieces in first, second and third place. I'll omit the names of the voters for privacy sake before posting them up.

Hey, I really like what you came up with there Xela... If I find the time before deadline (this Saturday if I understood it correctly?) and manage to record without too much static and stuff I'll give it a try! What's the worst that can happen, right.

Sir_NutS

nice. I would have liked something simpler though. We'll see.

I will vote for this one.

Yeah I reread the whole thing and that would seem right. First I just clicked on that last link and confused myself, hehe.
Anyway, like NutS said, while it's still really cool it is not the simplest to revamp, atleast not for a rookie like myself. Will pass on this one and focus on getting my stuff working, see what you others do with it and get some ideas.

sourcetune was blah, but i forced something out of it.

also, wasn't ORC supposed to run opposite of PRC? whats with this parallelism.

yeah I thought about that too. Not to pop any debate TO but the organization so far has been kinda sketchy.

But, as long as the competition is running on a (fairly) constant basis I don't really care much.

i'm in. got something going already. not a whole lot of depth, but its kinda fun. Good source tune by the way.

It used to. I didn't really think it was important given that there are many other remix competitions running at various times. I know my organisation has been poor so far, but times are busier than they were when ORC was running fluently from week to week.

Sir Nuts - Faded Thoughts of a Morning Dreams (www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC101/ORC101_Sir_Nuts_-_Faded_Thoughts_of_a_Morning_Dream.mp3)
Description: The song is complete, not a WIP (2:49).

analoq - Xela's Crusty Sheets (www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC101/ORC101_analoq_-_Xelas_Crusty_Sheets.mp3)
Description: this started out as a decent baroque/contrapunctal interpretation of Xela's main theme but it became a chore so i just wanted to finish it as soon as possible. worthwhile for me in it's own way, nonetheless.. this is a style i haven't visited in a loooong time.

"The production on this one is kinda blah since i didnt have too much free time to work on it. i basically played with the chords and made a groove with the progression in double time. then i put lots of different stuff goin on underneath that. i think the arrangment is fun and i hope everyone enjoys."

yikes! I forgot to add a proper comment for my mix XD

Well, I only had a couple of hours to do it but it didn't come out that bad. The transition between sections was very abrupt but If I had spent more time on it I would have softened it a bit. Anyways what was fun about this one is the way I had to work with the pizziccatos (love to work with those) and the change of time signature mid-song(which was helluva fun).

anyways, I had fun, that's why I like orc.

sure you are allowed to vote Xela.

The voting stage is extended to tomorrow 19.00pm GMT+2 [Paris hour]

so reach as much people as you can and ask them to vote. :) thanks.

I was thinking that since you are in charge of the competition now, you should change the times for starting/ending/voting stages to fit your time, that way we won't have delays.

1st place: Chrono26
Excellent work on keeping things interesting. That chiptunish synth could use a little bit more juggling around before it fits the rest of the piece's mood.

2nd place: Sir_Nuts
I can see you're enjoying the new string samples. Or at least that would be my guess. The echoing synths clashed with your piano for a little time. Not bad, but there are still quite a few kinks that should have been looked into.

3rd place: Analoq
I understand how hard it is to make a decent mix without any sort of interface, and I think this was a great attempt. Unfortunately, this month's source didn't really lend itself to the stripped down feeling that this type of performance lends itself to.

Little bit of feedback. Analoq, I really loved Soggy Britain, in case you were wondering.

The Orichalcon

I hate to butt in after leaving the comp, but may I suggest that ORC continues the text-results? The reviews are/were the best part of the competition.

Doulifée
04-06-2007, 01:58 PM
yup. i like the review idea too. after all PRC and ORC is the best way to improve skills for remixers.

Alex Smith
04-06-2007, 06:03 PM
Although I forgot to vote, as usual, I would like to take the time to write a few comments if I may.

In no particular order:

Nuts, although not the most adventurous use of orchestral samples, I really enjoyed your interpretation once the beats kicked in. The quality beat-work and electronic elements somewhat made the mix, but ultimately it was a solid entry.

analoq, fantastic remix! I would have never have imagined that my original tune could have been interpreted in this way. Loved every second of it. It was brave of you to adopt this style of music and I applaud you for it.

Chrono, great groove you had going there. What I liked most about your mix was the percussion. Good bassline too. Nice work!

I apologise for not voting and would like to thank nuts, analoq and chrono for 3 quality remixes of my tune. ;)

yup. i like the review idea too. after all PRC and ORC is the best way to improve skills for remixers.

what are u gonna do, make them mandatory?

fuck that, if people wanna write reviews, let them, if people dont wanna, then they shouldnt have to

same as when submitting, if i write the song, why the hell should i have to talk about it and explain everything etc

all these stupid ass rules that were added to ORC is part of what was killing it...that and TO being retarded with it all (lazy)

so make all that shit optional, cause it aint happening

bye

analoq
04-06-2007, 07:35 PM
i'd say:
- let people post their entries in the thread if they want
- let people discuss the posted mixes before the voting stage if they want

the fewer rules, the better. compos are a community thing, let us interact as much as we are willing.

Chickenwarlord
04-06-2007, 08:06 PM
I will continue to give my paltry criticisms, but by no means should they be required. I think what TO was asking was that anyone who PMs their criticisms with their vote have them displayed anonymously when the winner is announced.
Ergh. Awkward wording, but I think the gist of what I meant is still there.

chrono26
04-06-2007, 09:44 PM
i'm pretty sure that no one is going to make reviews mandatory so some of you need to chill the hell out. it's just really helpfull to get some feedback. everyone's not in this just to get 1st place.

I've been out of the loop since last thursday, kinda taking a vacation, but it's good to come back and see I've won :D

I agree with analoq, this is a community thing, and everybody does it to have some fun rather than to compete. Anyways, I'm late with my song XD. I will be submitting it to douli later today, and I really hope I can see some of you participating.

And analoq, after all those times you kicked my ass on IMC and #Mae compos I think it was about time I had the upper hand  . Hope to see you too next time, I enjoyed your song and actually voted it first.

analoq
04-10-2007, 03:24 AM
your win is well deserved, Nuts. i love doing compos but i don't have the time for them like i did back in those days;
i gotta keep things lo-fi if i want to participate. still lots of fun, regardless.

i'll give your tune a shot, definitely. Douli, is there still time to start ORC for this week or will we be waiting until next?
cheers.
