OCR AG 3 : Hyper Street Fighter II

Hello and welcome to the Overclocked Remix Arcade Game tournament thread!

Even though the AG2 Tournament is not complete, both EasyP and I agreed to have Hyper Street Fighter II as our next game, so I decided to make the next competition active and ready to go!

As stated above, this month's game is Hyper Street Fighter II.

In this tournament, we shall be doing the "round robin" format. Rules are simple for this. Default settings are mandatory.
You will be playing best 3 out of 5.

We will be using an emulator called Kawaks (http://cps2shock.retrogames.com/download/winkawaks157.zip), a cps1/cps2 and neogeo emulator. It has its own netplay option that does not require lan, so we do not need to worry about using Hamatchi. You can use whichever server fits you best to play your matches on. East coast should use "anti3d", while the West coast should use "fragbox". These two are the best for both coasts, and should help to minimize desynching and ping issues.

Sign ups end on the 16th, but that doesn't mean you can't start today! Since it is round robin, you can still sign up even if the tournament is in progress, so don't be afraid to sign up and join in on the action.

I think that Arek and EasyP want to keep things default as much as possible to avoid a lot of confusion on the part of participants. I mean, up until last night, some people didn't even know they could access the test menu.

Slower speed encourages more strategy over twitch movements. The more practiced players on high-speed will just play and do everything fairly automatically, but when you crank the speed down you have to think a little bit more, and that levels the playing field some between the experts and the noobs. APEX and EVO really aren't trying to level the playing field at all - they want the best of the best, and the learning curve for high-speed is a lot higher than it is on low.

But we have other issues. We're not pros. We're not even in the same room. Lag will end up dictating a lot of things, and this is really what bugs me - YOU can't control how well you connect to your opponent. I mean, I have ping of 5 on fragbox. FIVE lousy milliseconds.

I wouldn't mind playing on slowest speed (you guys heard my shit about slow low-damage 3/5s in Alpha3), but the default settings really end up being the best. Besides, EasyP and Arek want to have their own Vacaville cock-fest playing the Alpha 3 final, and they can't really do that if they have to ask Scandia for the keys to the cabinet.

Also, in Hyper Fighting you choose the speed before every match, hitting right to move from the number 2 to 3 isn't something I think would trip up the noobs too much, but it really isn't that big of a deal, I am just more comfortable at the tourny standard higher speed.

Hahahaha, "It pissed off everyone except for the guy who beat me." You have to admit that it's pretty cheap, though I'd be interested to hear how Epic beat you. I know he plays Bison too though, but maybe not exclusively. T Hawk's shoryuken equivalent cuts right through the crusher. I'm not sure what else he could have used to beat you, though I did beat Kamoh just now with classic Zangief when he was using Bison.

Nah, he didn't use Bison in the match. It was afterward. Also I think it was either Super or Super Turbo Bison, which imo aren't as good.

Several people are playing Honda extremely well and I've only seen a couple Ryu/Kens. How very unusual.

I also beat him CE Bison vs CE Bison. I could probably beat him with some of the other characters I'm good with, but I went with the safest option for the tourny.

Just because CE Bison is good doesn't mean you automatically win, you just have to be better than the person you are playing.

Hell, Alex Wolfe won Evo last year in HSF2 with ST Dhalsim. It's just that CE Bison takes a great game and turns it ugly real quick. I prefer Super Turbo, as does most of the US Pro players, but the Japs are still playing HSF2, so maybe they know something we don't. I doubt it though, I think the US definitely has an edge in SF2.

I'm using a 30 day trial of Snagit (an excellent program, better than crappy Fraps which only lets record for THIRTY FREAKING SECONDS. Nice trial, jerks.)

Anyway, yeah. If you want me to record your mathces, you have 27 days to ask, haha. Or you could just download it/ buy it yourselves, but I must warn you; It's not as easy as just recording the actual footage (That's the easy part). The difficulty comes in compressing and re-encoding the massive 100+ Meg files that result from using the program.

I'll help anyone who wishes to record with encoding problems. Much thanks to Pyrion for providing me w/ some info on the Help/ and Newbies forum.

Since this playoff stage is going by pretty quickly (two matches left), I think we should axe my "staggered schedule" idea and simply go with a few set rules:

Day 0: New game declared, tournament begins with Round-Robin stage.
Day 10: Registration ends @ 11:59 pm Eastern Time.
Day 17: Round-Robin ends @ 11:59 pm Eastern Time.
Day 24: Playoffs must be completed by 11:59 pm Eastern Time.

The other option is to make the deadlines for round robin on Day 14, and Day 21 for the playoffs.
