View Full Version : Firefox randomly crashing a lot lately

Over the past week or two, I've noticed Firefox is randomly crashing a bunch. It mostly happens on forums when I'm entering a message. I've noticed it happening when I click the text box, and then I hit enter to go down a few spaces. Then the error message pops up and it crashes. I guess at least it saves your session so you can immediately go back though.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Yes. This happens to me quite a bit actually. I'd type a couple of words (in any forum) and sometimes it'll crash.

Quite annoying =(

I haven't gotten this problem, but what does the error message say?

There is no error message. When you hit "Enter" while typing in your forum message, you get a box that pops up telling you that FireFox has to close (you know, the whole "Send/Don't Send" deal). Then you have to restart FireFox. This has been happening to me ever since the 2.0.0.2 upgrade, and it's getting really old.

Weird, this hasn't happened to me at all yet, and I post a lot on various forums...

What extensions are you guys running?

I personally only use No Script and Adblock Plus (both up to date).

I'm using both of those too, and another dozen or so minor addons...so hmm.

Is it only on certain sites, or any?

If it has a forum you can post on, it can crash there. It doesn't matter which site it is. I've had it happen here, on Gerbilfat, .org, Remod, the Super Mario 64 project site, and several other sites I visit.

Nope. Hasn't happened to me on either of my machines yet.

That's odd...I haven't encountered this at all.

This happens to my mum.

This happens to me all the time, but not when typing a message. If I follow a link to a thread and click the back button before it has loaded completely, Firefox will sometimes freeze and shut down completely.

Needless to say, I don't like vBulletin anymore.

this was happening to me for a while, so I went back to firefox 1.5.0.7, and I haven't had any issues since. it seems to be a problem with 2.0.0.2, so maybe there'll be a fix in the not too distant future.

Hasn't happened to me in Windows or Ubuntu

It's weird. When it happens, it will happen multiple times. Then it won't do it for days.

Happened again a while ago when I clicked the reply button but regreted it the next second since I wanted to check one thing and pressed the back button. Then the thought "aww crap" crossed my mind and shortly afterwards Firefox broke down.

Alright, here's what I did for the moment.

As I mentioned before, all the crashing started with the 2.0.0.2 update. So, I went back and grabbed the 2.0.0.1 version of FireFox, and thus far, I've had not a single crash. Seems something happened, and currently there's nothing on Mozilla's help forum that does anything besides telling people it's not FireFox, but a plug-in. They suggest going through their standard "FireFox crashes" diagnostic (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes), but people still say the browser crashes even after doing all the things the diagnostic says to do. I even read a post or two flat out refusing to believe that it was FireFox at all... like somehow FireFox couldn't possibly have a bug in it. I can also no longer find the threads that talked about the browser crashing to the desktop, which puzzles me.

So, try going back to 2.0.0.1 and see if it helps.

Anybody tried 2.0.0.3 yet? I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it works.

That's the version I was using when I switched back to 2.0.0.1. It crashed regularly on me.

I used to have those kinds of crashes on 1.5.whatever, but I haven't had any since 2.0.0.0

I'm on 2.0.0.3 now.

2.0.0.3 here, not any problems yet. I have read of this happening on other forums as well.
